Re Safe to use macOS X replacement discs on macbook 4,1?bySBV?

1.  Is it safe to use Mac OS X replacement discs on Macbook 4,1 (make sure is 4 1)?  This macbook is like a child w/o parents.
2.  Is it true this macbook 4 1 was upgrade to 6MG and that can be downloaded from apple?  sbv.illi

1. If they are the gray install disks that came with the MacBook. The gray disks are specific to a machine. They only have the drivers and files for the machine that they came with. You have the operating system on disk one and iLife and additional software on disk 2.
Otherwise you'll need to use a retail disk.
Snow Leopard 10.6
or Leopard 10.5
2. The model 4.1 can use 6gb (not mb) of RAM. It's physical chips and not downloadable. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/DDR2/
Here's instructions on replacing RAM http://homeoffice.consumerelectronicsnet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=44404
. To make sure which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier.
Here's specs on the model 4,1 http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/stats/macbook-core-2-duo-2.1-white -13-early-2008-penryn-specs.html

  • Can I use my iMac Install Disc on Macbook Pro?

Hi, all.  I was given a friend's old Macbook Pro and I'd like to put Boot Camp on it, but the Boot Camp instructions say I need an OSX Leopard install disc to do it.  Naturally, I just recently purged my own software binder and threw away all of my OSX discs except the one that came with iMac I recently purchased.  "Why would I need them any more?" said I.  Doh.
I have no idea what cat Apple is up to now, but the Macbook is running 10.5.8 and the install disc from my iMac is 10.6.7.  My questions:
    1) Can I use my iMac install disc on my Macbook Pro, which is about 3-4 years old?
    2) Does OS 10.6.7 qualify as Leopard?  If not, will it work for what I'm trying to do?
    3) Do I need to update the Macbook OS to 10.6.7 to be able to use that disc for the Boot Camp install?
Any information or advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

The only thing I'd add to this is that at one point in time you could go to an Apple store and purchase Lion on a USB stick.
If your MBP was compatible and you could find one of those you could boot to it, install from it then setup bootcamp.
Also if you are thinking bootcamp, also consider VMWare Fusion or Parallels which allow you to run Windows while still in OS X.

  • Replacement disc for macbook

I recently got a macbook (late 2007 model) but it came with the wrong system discs.  I know they are very specific.  I found ones for an early 2008 on ebay but those probably won't work.  But they had part numbers or serial/version numbers on them.  How do I find the numbers for my macbook so I know I'm getting the right ones?  Should be 10.5

  • Macbook Air, cleaning screen.  Are Dust-Off Monitor Wipes safe to use?

Are Dust-Off Monitor Wipes safe to use on the screen of a MacBook Air?

    Hello Otto,
Here's the official response from Apple:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3226
When I worked at the Apple Store we used iKlear every night to wipe down displays on all the floor models as well as any machine in for service. The cleaning solution was never sprayed directly onto the display or any part of the machine, only into the microfiber cloth and then a gentle wipe down of the targeted area. The application of cleaning solution was minimal as well to the cloth to avoid the potential for causing any sort of harm or damage to the product.
Because the MacBook Air doesn't have the glass overlay like the 13" or 15" MacBook Pro I'd recommend being gentle when wiping the screen at all times as you're directly applying pressure to LCD panel. I'd also avoid things like Windex or "glass cleaner." I see no reason why the Dust-Off Monitor Wipes would not be acceptable, there's no chemical components on the materials list that jump out at me as being potentially hazardous to damaging the panel.

  • Is disc doctor safe to use

Is Disc Doctor safe to use?

    How to maintain a Mac
    1. Make redundant backups, keeping at least one off site at all times. One backup is not enough. Don’t back up your backups; make them independent of each other. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.
    2. Keep your software up to date. In the Software Update preference pane, you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis. This is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all such modifications that you use are compatible.
    3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this stuff is useless, or worse than useless.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
As a rule, the only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Use your computer; don't fuss with it.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
The free anti-malware application ClamXav is not crap, and although it’s not routinely needed, it may be useful in some environments, such as a mixed Mac-Windows enterprise network.
    4. Beware of trojans. A trojan is malicious software (“malware”) that the user is duped into installing voluntarily. Such attacks were rare on the Mac platform until sometime in 2011, but are now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
There is some built-in protection against downloading malware, but you can’t rely on it — the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness — not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be acquired directly from the developer. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from a web page without your having requested it should go straight into the Trash. A website that claims you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, is rogue.
In OS X 10.7.5 or later, downloaded applications and Installer packages that have not been digitally signed by a developer registered with Apple are blocked from loading by default. The block can be overridden, but think carefully before you do so.
Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most people don't.
    5. Don't fill up your boot volume. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a boot failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Macs that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem. While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage consumption and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.
If storage space is running low, use a tool such as the free application OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move rarely-used large files to secondary storage.
    6. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” "defragmenting the drive," “running periodic scripts,” “dumping logs,” "deleting temp files," “scanning for viruses,” "purging memory," "checking for bad blocks," "testing the hardware," or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are either completely pointless or are useful only for solving problems, not for prevention.
The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it.

  • Spilled water on MacBook Air - safe to use after a week?

Last Friday I spilled a glass of water all over my MacBook Air's keyboard. I jumped up, tipped the laptop over to get as much water off as possible, and dried off the outside. I took it in to Apple immediately and was told it needed so many repairs, that it would cost more than the laptop itself. The guy who looked at my Air was able to turn it on, but the monitor was flickering and had horizontal lines. He took it apart and said the motherboard was fine, but I would need a new logic board, speakers, screen, etc. and said I should be able to get my files off onto an external hard drive. Since it was such a costly repair that I couldn't go for, I didn't get a list of everything that had to be replaced.
When I got it home, I wasn't able to power it on like he could. I let it sit on my dresser all week, open and upside down, to let it dry and allow any extra water to drip out the front. Tired of looking at it, tonight I decided to try one more time and turn it on, and it did! I was able to email myself some important files that I thought I would never see again, so programs and internet worked. The monitor seemed completely fine, the brightness goes up and down normally, the speakers work, and I didn't notice any problems with the keyboard.
It seems to be completely fine, but I'm a bit worried about whether or not it's safe to use, and if there's anything I should be looking out for. At the Apple store I was told that it needed so much, but maybe it's fine for now? If I am able to use it, should I be thinking about replacing it anyway? I'll be wanting to use it next fall for school. Sorry for the huge wall of text, I thought it would be best to know as much as possible.
    Thanks.

That's great news. I'm not a computer guy but I am very experienced in automotive. The way I see it is even when you took it in and they cleaned it there is no way to get all the water out if it's really bad. The water will cause shorts and all kind of thing will malfunction. Now that the water is dried I would take it in and get it retested. You see, the first test they did on it was not accurate because of the water (causing it to short). Now you can get a good test. Who knows, it might be just fine. I remember drying  cars for weeks at a time. One thing to have them look for is any corrosion that might had formed. My guess (only a guess) is that if it's working good now you got really lucky and it will be fine.

  • Is it okay to use a battery replacement that's 0.3V higher than the original battery?

My PA5024U-1BRS (10.8 V) Toshiba battery for my Satellite M840 got broken so I bought a new one from Toshiba but they gave me PA5025U-1BRS (11.1 V) which has a 0.3 V difference. When I ask Toshiba's technical staff if it's compatible with my laptop they said that's what their supplier from Singapore gave them so it's okay. But they honestly don't sound sure themselves. I can't risk losing my programs and files.
Though the battery pack came with an information sheet that both PA5024U-1BRS and PA5025U-1BRS both can be used in Satellite series (though it wasn't specified what models).
I'm just being careful so please help me. Is it safe to use a replacement battery for a laptop that's higher in voltage by 0.3 compared to the original battery?

It's safe. There's a fairly wide tolerance on that voltage. For instance, this page...
       PA5110U-1BRS
    ..has this note.
This battery has the same compatibly as the Primary Li Ion Battery Pack (Part#: PA5024U-1BRS, 48Wh) that was shipped with select laptops. It is the direct replacement for Toshiba Primary 6-Cell Li Ion Battery Pack (Part#: PA5025U-1BRS)

  • Has there been trouble with the charger.  I am getting to re-order but the one i had the had the power surge and the end was blackened.  Not sure if it safe to use the laptop again?

Has there been any trouble with the charger?  I am getting ready to re-order but the one i had.... the had the power surge and the end was blackened.  Not sure if it safe to use the laptop again?  Thanks.

Can you also see blackening in the power jack on the PowerBook? If so, I would be worried that the surge also damaged the computer/
Does the computer run OK on just the battery? If it is working on battery power, that limits the number of things inside the computer that could have been fried.
If the computer is severely damaged by the surge, it's not worth repairing. However, a couple of posters in Apple forums said their homeowners'/renters' insurance paid them replacement value of their computer after power surge damage due to known problems on the grid, like the huge power outage that hit the SW Untied Stats and part of Mexico yesterday.

  • Is OnyX safe to use?

I've had some kernel panic problems and now have an Open With contextual menu problem as noted in my previous submission here. It was suggested that I use a utility called OnyX which cleans caches among other things.
Does anyone have any experience with OnyX and any warnings?
    Steven

Actually I wouldn't go as far as to say Onyx is safe to use. It is not a maintenance utility despite others calling it, Cocktail, Macaroni, Applejack, Jaguar-Tiger Cache Cleaners, and other multifunction utilities that do more than one task. The only safe utility to use is a backup utility. Everything else should be treated as an after backup utility used only, and I repeat only for troubleshooting, when you know what it is you are troubleshooting, and are ready to restore the backup if the troubleshooting doesn't save you time. If you don't have a backup, some troubleshooting utilities can actually dig you a deeper hole, whereby data recovery is the only way to restore your situation with expensive data recovery companies. Moral of the story, backup first, worry about alternate utilities later. My backup FAQ* goes into detail on that:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
The real danger with many of the other utilities which specifically empty system caches is that caches can get corrupt, sometimes requiring a complete erase and install to resolve a persistently corrupting cache file. The real danger of prebinding utilities is you can render your Mac unbootable:
    http://www.unsanity.org/archives/macos_x/shock_andawe.php
Permissions sometimes is not repaired properly by these utilities, unless you use Disk Utility of the boot drive. Though thankfully with Tiger and newer at least you can use the installer disc's disk utility on a newer version of the operating system than is on the installer DVD. Previous versions of the operating system were not as generous, and required you have an equal or greater version of Disk Utility to do repair permissions.
Whoever recommended Onyx did so only because they were lucky or knew what they were doing, and assumed you would too. These swiss army knife utilities need to be guarded with care, and only to be used when you have a backup on standby.

  • I Need MacOS 10.6 discs...

I recently bought a used Mac Mini with OS10.6.8 installed and everything is working fine.
However, I'd like to be prepared and ready to diagnose/fix and re-install the OS when the
day comes that I need to so.
Where can buy a new copy of OS10.6 to register and use...or should I
    look for a "used" copy?
Or should I upgrade to the latest OS? My one concern about that, however, is whether or not Apple
fixed the apparent WIFI reception problem (suspected to be a firmware issue according to
    the discussion boards).
Please comment/advise.. and thank you for your help.
    Scott

Once you get the replacement discs, check to see which OS was originally installed. If not Snow Leopard, then contact Apple's online store's telesales agents: 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775 and get the Snow Leopard install disc: $20 USD. The move to Lion or ML will take research, since those render any PPC apps useless. I know nothing about the wireless issue, since I have no such devices and detest polluting the airways with EMR/EMI.

  • When will iPhone 4 be safe to use again?

When will the security holes in iOS 7 be patched? When will iPhone 4 be safe to use again?

Let me try and give a couple of examples:
A PDF vulnerability discussed here: http://www.reddit.com/r/jailbreak/comments/2h4r6p/pdf_vulnerability_in_712_were_ in_danger_people/. You may think it's not wise to open PDFs (or anything else) on an untrusted website anyway. Well, you don't have to. PDFs can be embedded in websites so that they are loaded automatically and trusted websites can be attacked.
A fake app attack described here: http://www.computerworld.com/article/2845146/security-bug-leaves-iphones-open-to -fake-app-attack.html. A fake app replaces an official one. I admit this requires carelessness but it exists nevertheless.
Also, National Cyber Safety Center of Finland has instructed people to stop using Safari on devices with iOS 7 because of a vulnerability that, used together with another exploit, can be used to run arbitrary code on the device. I assume this is the PDF vulnerability but I don't know about the other exploit(s).
Or am I not up to date with these issues? Have I missed something?

  • Screen lifting, maybe swollen battery, safe to use?

It's not really visibly noticeable, but a screen corner on my iPod touch 2g is lifted ~1mm. I squeeze that corner and can feel it give; other corners don't. I suspect a swollen battery, but battery life is normal; gets a little warm when charging but I unplug and cool before charging again.
Do you think screen will fall off? Is it safe to use (danger of exploding) if it's a swollen battery? iPod is a little more than year old, so it's out of warranty

If you have an Apple store nearby, take it in, or call customer support.
I had a swelling MacBook battery and the Apple store replaced it, "No Questions Asked", even though my MacBook and battery were 3 years old (2 years out of warranty).
They take swelling battery issues seriously.

  • I've just completed a vunerability scan (Kaspersky 2010 suite) and it recommends Idownload a patch from the vendor (SA42517= fault report). there are no updates so is Firefox safe to use?

I've just completed a vunerability scan (Kaspersky 2010 suite) and it recommends Idownload a patch from the vendor (SA42517= fault report). there are no updates so is Firefox safe to use?

You are using a relatively old version of Firefox (version 3.6), you should update to the latest version (3.6.13), there have been quite a few security fixes since the one you are using. You can get it from http://www.mozilla.com - you can download the setup file then run it to install it, this will replace your version with the latest.

  • Tiger replacement disc question

I received 4 replacement system discs for my PowerPc G5 today.
I wanted to run Apple Hardware Test but the discs aren't marked except with numbers.
Using the option key at startup I am only able to select one of them to boot from and that is the one marked 1.
But am unable to boot from it, part of the problem I have been  experiencing.
Have been troubleshooting for close to 3 weeks now with a new optical drive arriving today. Installed new ram, new battery, new hd.
I thought the AHT disc would help in the process.
Was just wondering if AHT is in fact on disc number 1 of the replacement discs.
    Many Thanks for any help.

I called apple and they sent me the discs but had to pay $69 and some change. I gave them my serial number and double checked with them that I would be getting a disc with the hardware test. I told them the original operating system that shipped with my computer.
Apple Power Macintosh G5 2.0 GHz DP - PowerPC 970fx
the discs I received are 4 white discs with Mac OS Tiger Printed on the top. They are white with black print.
Printed on the discs it says "Replacement CD Not For Resale with the serial number and then 2005 Apple Inc. All Rights Reserved"
Mac OS Tiger Install Disc 1  SRF2Z691-5815-A
Mac OS Tiger Install Disc 2  SRF2Z691-5816-A
Mac OS Tiger Install Disc 3  SRF2Z691-5817-A
Mac OS Tiger Install Disc 4  SRF2Z691-5818-A
I looked through the contents of the discs and didnt see anything mentioning the test.
    Thanks again for the help.

  • Replacement Disc

I have a mid-2008 iMac that came with Leopard on it (now has S.L.), and my Mom has an iMac G5 that we got used from eBay.
However, the PowerPC G5 did not come with any discs...and we want to upgrade it to Leopard.
If I call Apple and ask for a replacement disc for my Intel iMac (the one that originally came with Leopard), can I then use that to install Leopard on my Mom's G5?  Or will the disc they send only be able to be installed on my machine?

The replacement disk for your Intel iMac will be a machine-specific installer and will not work with the G5 machine.  Apple no longer sells Mac OS X 10.5 so that has to be found from sources such as Amazon, eBay or others.
You can try Apple Customer Support to see if they will send a G5 iMac-specific disk, you have to give them the machine serial number.  Check: http://www.apple.com/contact for the number.
