Re: Satellite a660 - problem with HDD!

Hello!
When I turned on my computer this morning, first time I've heard that HDD was working very noisy. It was like buzzing and clicking, never was like that. Computer is 3 months old, bought in pc world.
Can somebody help what to do ?
thanks

Hello
Theoretically it could be a hardware malfunction of HDD. Everything is possible because HDD is mechanical part so you should always do a backup from time to time that you dont loose any important data.
In your case I would contact nearest authorized service provider. Explain the situation and the guys can repair your notebook under warranty, thats free for you. :)

    Hi Konyga,
If you already get a warning about internal HDD before Windows starts I would recommend exchanging it and backup all data as fast as possible.
Is your notebook still under warranty?
If yes you can get a new HDD from an authorized service provider. This would be for free because its covered by warranty. Everything what you have to do is contacting an ASP.

  • Satellite M30X: Problems with USB 2.0 external HDD

    Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satellite M30X. I recently bought myself a 200GB External Hard Disc. It has its own Power supply. If I connect it with USB 2.0 to my Laptop it happens to diconnect and reconnect permanantly. Sometimes it works, then I can put Data on the Disc. Then again it diconnects and reconnects many times. I've already tried another USB Port, but there is no difference. It's very strange, because I connected the External Hard Disc to many other Computers (Laptop and Tower) and it ALWAYS works!!! Its only with my Laptop it disconnects and reconnects the whole time. As I said, not always. Sometimes it works for like an half an hour or so then the action starts again ...
    Can somebody help???
    Greez Lutz

    Hi Andrea
I really dont know why this happen. A friend of mine has the same problem with his desktop. While copy process runs the HDD is suddenly disconnected and there is also acoustic sound when the hardware is removed.
I have connected his HDD on my Tecra and there is no problem. I really dont know what the problem can be. Maybe there is some problem with OS because I can not believe that there is some contact problem with USB ports.
If you use many different USB devices at the same time maybe there is some conflict between few different drivers. Sorry but it is not easy to give some precise explanation.

  • Satellite A660 - format 500GB HDD to make bootable clone

    I have a Toshiba Satellite A660 PSAW3C-047017 running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
I bought a 500 GB Momentus XT in December so that I can clone to it (bootable clone, not recoverable image). I just bought and installed Norton Ghost 15, but it can't see the drive, which is connected to the laptop via eSATA. Disk Management says I need to initialize the disk. I can't find an explanation of what exactly initialization means. What exactly does it do?
Various forum threads say conflicting things about the end effect of initialization (whether it destroys data):
    http://superuser.com/questions/283930/will-initializing-disk-make-data-unrecoverable
    http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/29199-hard-drive-initialization-question.html
    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080214215647AAYFNGS
Since it's a new HDD, I guess I don't have to worry about that?
Should I choose MBR (Master Boot Record) or GPT (GUID Partition Table)?
Finally, this may be a bit Seagate-specific for a non-Seagate thread, but I'll put it out there in case anyone can chime in. I've read that the Momentus XT has some intelligence built in to prevent performance-degrading alignment problems with partition boundaries when Advanced Format is used. It also advertises built-in intelligence to keep most frequently accessed content in the SDD part of the HDD. Will any of these be "messed up" by initialization, or the wrong partition style? What about formatting, is there anything to be careful about?

    > I just bought and installed Norton Ghost 15, but it can't see the drive, which is connected to the laptop via eSATA. Disk Management says I need to initialize the disk. I can't find an explanation of what exactly initialization means. What exactly does it do?
Possibly you have to add the SATA driver to see the HDD.
The notebook supports the SATA controller and the SATA driver files are part of the Intel Storage Manager.

  • Satellite A200 - Problems with AC adapter

    Hi,
The problem concerns an Satellite A200 (PSAF6A-02H01N).
Recently there has been problems with the Laptop taking several attempts to start up Vista, it would lock up while loading or just crash and freeze just after loading Vista.
But Once it was up and running the laptop would happily work for hours with the AC adapter plugged in.
The problem has now got worse and the laptop will not finish loading Vista without crashing.
We have now narrowed the it down to only having a problem when the AC power adapter is plugged in.
The Laptop battery will charge normally with the AC adapter plugged in and the Laptop in standby or switched off.
The problem still exists with the AC adapter plugged in and the battery removed.
The notebook will start up and run perfectly with the battery in and no AC adapter connected. Once the AC adapter is plugged in the Laptop will show that the battery is charging then after a few seconds it will crash or freeze and the only escape is a complete shutdown.
The laptop will only run under battery power for about 30mins max.
I have checked the Voltage output of the AC adapter and this appears to be a consistant 19.4 Volts.
Is it just an AC adapter problem or does the problem lie with the laptop?
    Thanks in advance..
    Gaz.

Crashing/BSOD's can be caused by many things. The first thing to do is check the RAM and HDD for problems.
Test the RAM for errors. You can use the free Memtest utility:
    1) Go to http://www.memtest.org/#downiso and download the "Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)"
    2) Open the ZIP file and extract the ISO file to a temporary folder.
    3) Burn the ISO to a blank CD using an "Image-to-Disc" or "Bootable CD" project in your CD/DVD burning software (dont use a normal Data Project).
    4) Insert the Memtest CD into your laptop and turn it on, press F12 to launch the boot menu, and select "CD".
Test the Hard Disk for errors by using DFT.
    DFT Download: http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT
Download the ISO File and burn it to a CD-R Disc (There is also a Floppy Disk version if that's easier).
If you dont know how to burn an ISO file, read this guide: http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm
Restart your laptop and boot from the DFT Disc.
Choose the "Advanced" Test and let it run (it may take an hour or so).
If you see a red message box, the HDD is faulty.
An error code 0x70 means there are bad sectors and the HDD needs replacing.

  • Problems with HDD

I have some problems with partitioning my HDD through Boot Camp. I finished the Boot Camp Assistant when it partitioned the Hard Drive. Now, these 120 GB are not accesible! I estimated how much memory take all my files: it's 278 GB, but in the HD properties I see over 400. How can I repair the disk?

    That's entirely up to you.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Most applications create preference files which are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can located them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper 1.6
    Yank 1.31
    SuperPop 1.0b2
    Uninstaller 1.99
    Spring Cleaning 8.0

  • Satellite L505D - Problem with sleep mode in Win 7

It's me again, in last thread :
    "Hello Friends,
I have a great problem after Windows 7 updated itself. I have a laptop Toshiba Satellite L505D. When I close the lid, it should automatically go to the sleep mode. Unfortunately, only the screen is black and the laptop is still running, I have to shut it down then switch on again. Is it a problem with the 'battery driver'?Please, help me :)"
The sleep mode worked perfeclty for couple of days and it is again gone.. What is more when I try to enter the sleep mode I can't do anything on the notebook , it is still running on blank screen and the processors' fan is working on high speed. During these last days, when the sleep mode worked, windows didn't update itself..
I don't know what is happening.. :) Weird problem, isn't it?

It is not easy to say why this happen. In your last posting you wrote about some windows updates. Who knows what is wrong there.
If nothing helps, not even system restore and you want to use stand-by mode I recommend you to back-up all your data and install OS again using recovery mode.
With factory settings everything will be OK again but then be careful with updates.

  • Problems with hdd, new one ?

I seem to be having some problems with my current hdd, and i was wondering if I was better off just buying a new hdd all together. It doesn't want to 'unmount' or format. I called certain Apple service centers and their diagnostics fee is $90 - About how much a new hard drive would be on it's own. Can anyone help or give feedback?

Are you talking about your internal HDD?
If so, how are you trying to unmount or reformat?
It's tough to do it to the startup disk, right?
ETA: You might just need to run Disk Utility on it - what OS are you using?

Im really sorry for making over a year to answer :bonk:but the problem is still there.I have now two hdds(the third one is not functioning with the other two ones on:worship:.I have checked my hdds one hunded times without finding a single error.I changed the PSU with a 750watt corsair but still no light .Ive learn to live with it.Whenever my pc refuses to boot(the bios  doesnt recognize the discs)i open the case and disconnect the  hd im using for storage, boot into windows, shut down the pc,reconnect the other one, boot again and voila!!!! Everything works fine for 3 to 5 days in a row until the nightmare returns.I sent the board back to the store for rma but they didnt find anythin wrong.
The only possitive is that i havent had any  "freezing" experience inside the windows for  a long time now.My pc works flawlessly with one hd so im willing to keep it till summer.

  • Satellite A660 works with 2GB RAM only

    Hi
please help me my laptop is Satellite A660 psaw3ew it was works good when it was supply with 6GB ram and i extend ram to 8 G.B and it works good until it stop boot and then i remove the whole Ram and now it is only works with 2 G.B Ram please help me
    Thnks
    Dr.Michael Saddekni

    Hi
There are two possibilities: either the RAM modules are faulty/damage/not compatible or one of the memory slots is damaged.
I think you should test every RAM module in each slot to discover the issue

  • Satellite A660 - upgrade with backlight keyboard

I have a Toshiba Satellite A660-141. Originally it was without backlid keyboard, but I recently bot a replacement with backlit function for my laptop, but when I connect everything backlit don't work... Can anybody help me to activate it? Did anybody did the same replacement?
    http://1drv.ms/1grM9M8

    Hi dude
I found very interesting thread about the keyboard backlight upgrade on Satellite A660
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=58628
The upgrade would be possible if an additional connector JBLG would be present.
Additionaly the new option in BIOS would appear where you could change the backlight function.
In case this option isnt available, the upgrade would not be possible.

  • Satellite A660 - troubles with Wi-Fi and keyboard

    Hi everyone,
I bought this Satellite A660 3yrs ago. I found the Wi-Fi no work suddenly half year ago. I tried to use fn+f8, it show that "Wireless communication is disabled. Please turn on communication switch".
Then I had to use LAN connectivity.
Other problem appeared 3 weeks ago, the keyboard cannot work correctly.
When I start Windows and use mouse click a item or document, many items or documents will be selected, look like press 'shift' at the same time.
And press keyboard, just appear capital letters and number, cannot use "@#%&*(" etc. if just use fn+num lock, it dont change anything.
If I use fn+f1 firstly ,then go back windows, then use fn+num lock, and mouse and keyboard are good.
I tried to reinstall VAP and WLAN, reset BIOS to default, it was not useful. I use recovery os today, but the problem is still there, no Wi-Fi, no good mouse and keyboard. I have no idea now.
    Please help
    Sorry for my English

    Hi
    Regarding the keyboard issue:
I think you should connect the external USB keyboard. In case the external keyboard would work properly, the problem is related to your internal keyboard and this need to be replaced.
    Regarding the WLan issue:
    >Wireless communication is disabled. Please turn on communication switch"
I found an solution on the Toshiba US page:
[Satellite A665- "Wireless Communication is Disabled. Please Turn On the Wireless Communication Switch|http://support.toshiba.com/support/viewContentDetail?contentId=2782704]
The Satellite A665 is very similar to the European A660 series and the solution is to enable wireless communication, press the Wireless Antenna ON/OFF button located on the System Indicator Panel above the keyboard. Once the Wireless Antenna is ON, you can use the FN+F8 keys to turn wireless on.

  • Help needed, possible problem with HDD

In the last few weeks, my iMac has become quite slow and tends to freeze fairly often. The other day I turned it on and was met with a kernel panic screen and could not access my desktop or any of my files. To find the source of the problem I ran an Apple Hardware Test which gave me the following error:
    4HDD/11/40000004:SATA (0,0)
After searching on the internet, I decided to boot from my OSX install disc and run Disk Utility. After verifying the disc, and repairing the disc, the scan revealed that there was no problem with the HDD. However, I was still being met with the kernel panic screen whenever I tried to turn on the computer.
After booting from the install disc again, I did an Archive and Install, which finally let me get to my desktop, however the computer was once again running slowly and after another Apple Hardware Test it resulted in the same error as above.
After more searching on the internet, I decided to remove the 3rd party RAM from my iMac and replace it with the original RAM. No success again.
More searching brought Disk Warrior to my attention. After purchasing the program, I ran the included scans and once again was given the result that there was nothing wrong with the HDD.
After this I decided to run Tech Tools Deluxe which came up with a Directory fail, even though the Disk Utility and Disk Warrior scans found no such problem.
So what procedure can I take now, I am hesitant to perform a System Restore as I do not want to lose my files, but this may be my only option.
    Please help.

Okay, I ended up installing OSX to my external HD and booted from that. Ran Disk Warrior from the external and used it to rebuild the internal HD. After the rebuild DW gave me the message that it could not replace the new directory with the old directory as there was a disk malfunction. I managed to copy all of my important data to the external.
I'm guessing that the internal needs to be replaced? I'd rather start fresh with a new one than risk this happening again anyways.
In any case thank you very much for your help, it was much appreciated .
