Re: Satellite C660 - Fan starts then stops

Hello
Sorry for my English I am French, I have a laptop Toshiba Satellite C660 few days ago and I noticed that the fan starts and stops every minute at all times, when temperatures exceed about 40 degrees (noted with SpeedFan).
Even if I'm just the office, the Internet. However it does not heat much. Is this normal?
Before I had a laptop and the fan did not stop but almost never had little noisy. I prefer that way, but this is can be a simple matter of habit for the Toshiba ...?

it is not normal at all. it goes on and off about every 30 seconds! it is downright disturbing! it drives me nuts!
by the way, people have already complained in may 2011 about it:
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=59733
i upgraded the bios to version 1.4 and nothing has changed. and NO, changing anything within the power options does not make it any better.
do we have to ask for help by this gentleman?
"fan speeds are set in BIOS and BIOS causes the fan of Satellite L670 to be too noisy for no reason. it is very important to cool the CPU-GPU down but Satellite L670 doesnt do it efficiently as Sat L670 uses a 0/1 approach. i have modified BIOS of Sat L670 and it is much less noisy now and temperature usually does not rise. when temperature rises then the fan works full speed of course. but thats not often. you can write me an email if you would like to know more [email protected]"
TOSHIBA we need SOLUTIONS, not words!
thanks for your help.

  • HP PRO 3400 Series desktop won't boot CPU fan starts and stops , no video, no beeps

I have the above computer with an i3-2125 CPU, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, and a 300GB Seagate Hard drive.  I've had it for about 2 years and been working fine. It started acting up about 2 months ago.  It would lose the date and time.  I checked the battery, and it was OK, so I kept using the computer.  Then on 9/15/2014 it hung on "Starting Windows", I did the following:
    1.  Ran the built in HP diagnostic on hard drive and memory and they both passed.
    2.  Tried to go to last known good configuration and nothing happened.
    3.  Noticed the date and time were off, replaced the battery, nothing changed.
    4.  Tried another hard drive from another HP PRO 3400 Series and it would boot up but could not set date in bios.
    5.  Tried all kinds of things but could not set date in bios.
          a.  Bios date read 48/00/0048 after removing and replacing battery.
b,  Tried to reset date to 9/16/2914 and it gets 56/00/0051
    6.  Then it wouldn't boot at all.   So now when you turn on the power, the CPU fan starts and runs for about 1 second, then shuts off for 4 seconds, then starts and runs for another 1 sec and it does this continuously.  There is  no video and no beeps and no difference when all memory is removed.
    7.  I removed the power supply, and checked voltages.  It appears to be OK.
    8.  I removed the motherboard, and inspected it- saw nothing obvious.
    9.  I connected the power supply to the motherboard with nothing else connected to the motherboard, and I get the same thing.  CPU fan starts then stops continuously, no video no beeps.
    10.  I am thinking it is the Motherboard, but I sure could use some suggestions as to what to do next.
    Thanks

  • Emac tried to start then stopped, finally after 3 attempts it started

After a hard drive failure i run my emac on an external hard drive through a fire wire.
That worked OK till yesterday when it tried to start but after a few seconds of the normal fan noise and before the screen lit up, it stopped. I hit the switch again and it did the same thing 3 times but on the 4th attempt it started but a white screen came on and told me to type "mac-boot" and hit return.
    It finally started.
The external hard drive was still running OK at the time it had stopped, it was internally that it had stopped.
I took the back off the emac and vacuumed the dust from inside and after that it has since started normally every time though it seems slower to start, but I could be mistaken about that as I can't now remember noticing how long it took to start before.
Someone said the problem could be the power supply failing.
Is there any way for me to diagnose what exactly is wrong, since an emac power supply is not same as a PC power supply?
Could a PC power supply be modified to replace the emac power supply as I have a failed PC with a good power supply I could use if it would work?
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello and thanks for your reply.
I neglected to mention that at the time of the hard disk failure I put a new hard disk inside too with the intention of using it as a back up to the External Hard Drive but I found it was easier in the end to get another external hard drive and now I use Time Machine to back up on to that 2nd external hard drive every few days.
I disconnect the 2nd external hard drive when I'm not backing up data on to it.
Most of the time when I boot up the emac it somehow knows to go straight to the 1st External Hard Drive instead of the Internal Hard Drive but occasionally it will go to the Internal Hard Drive and when it does that I have to go to System Preferences and then to Startup Disk and actually select the External Hard Drive icon and that's what I had to do every time when it was having that weird starting then stopping phase, ie, every time during the starting then stopping phase, when it did start it went to the Internal Hard Drive even after I would go into Startup Disk and select External Hard Drive it would start on the Internal Hard Drive, so in the end I didn't bother trying any more and I just connected to the internet through the Internal Hard Drive until I took the back off and vacuumed the dust out and ever since I did that it's been running normally, ie, it's always selecting the External Hard Drive again and running at what seems to be normal speed for everything too.
I just don't know why it went into that starting then stopping phase.
When it was in the starting then stopping phase the internal fan noise would stop but the little white light next to the DVD door would stay lit up so it was definitely getting some power from somewhere but it was failing to go on and boot up because the power to the internal fan had failed ie, I could clearly hear the fan stop only 3 or 4 seconds after hitting the start button.
I've just had a look at the capacitors that you suggested and they look perfect, like new in fact, they have a shiny metallic top with a + indented in the top and they are flat and they show no sign of a dried up liquid or any bubbling up anywhere.
Anyway, your reply was helpful since you ruled out the Power Supply and the capacitors, so thank you for those.
The friend who advised me how to get going again after the initial hard disk failure, ie, via the External Hard Drive connected by fire wire, did warn me not to touch anything in the back that wasn't directly related to changing the hard drive but thanks for the heads up anyway.

  • Video's and songs start then stop then start again

Try to uinstall and reinstall your audio device.
    1. On Window vista,Click on Start and type Devive Manager on the search box.Look for sound, video and game controllers.Click on the plus sign, you should see the audio adapter, most toshiba laptops use realtek high definition audio.Just right click and click on uninstall.
2.After you uninstall,Click action at the top of your device manager and click scan for hardware changes. It should reinstall the audio adapter.
    3. Try to play music.
Notes: Sometimes the problem is like this because of some driver updates from windows vista.

Try a reset. Press & hold the Power and Home buttons together for 10+ seconds, ignoring the red power-off slider, until you see the Apple logo. It is safe to do, there should be no content loss. It is the same as rebooting your computer.

  • Satellite A110-180 - Fan starts but stops after few seconds

    Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satellite A110-180 and when I turn on the computer the fan starts running but it stops in a few seconds and starts again in a while and stops again and starts..... Then the laptop gets heat quickly.
I bought the laptop around 5 years ago so I think that the problem is either the fan or the circuit that controls the fan. Can someone that has had the same problem make me sure that the fan is the problem?
The part number of the fan is ATZHG000500. Does anybody know if a fan with P/N ATZHG000100 is compatible with my laptop or if I can use other fan?
    Thanks for your help,

    Hi Boarder,
    Thanks for your quick reply.
I already cleaned the fan 3 days ago because I thought that perhaps that was the reason of the fan running. I installed a program to control the hard drive and CPUs temperature and at the beginning when I turn on the laptop in the morning the temperature is ok, but when I look an email and surf by internet a little bit for 10 min the temperature increase in 10º or more in CPU and hard drive, and the fan is still running in the same way that I commented (in a discontinuous way). So I don't think that it's normal at least theoretically. I also have another laptop and the fan is running all the time.
I'll check about the thermal grease to see if the condition are fine.

  • Satellite A300 - fan starts running every 2 mins for about 30 secs

    Hi
I wanted to know if its normal that the fan starts running on my Satellite A300-1hv every 2 mins for about 30 secs?
This is happening continuously. I am on vista maximum performance power.
    Help will be really appreciated.
    Thanks.

Yes, this is nothing unusual because the fan starts rotating if a certain temperature level was reached.
There is an temperature sensor and if the temperature goes to a higher level the cooling modules begins to cool the internal devices like CPU, GPU.
If the temperature decreases then the fan slows down.
It seems there is nothing wrong and you shouldnt be worried

  • I can't update my ipod. When I check for updates it says "can't connect to server"(despite internet connection being fine). Also, when I try and update software it starts then stops after 2 seconds

I can't update my Ipod. When I check for updates it says "can't connect to server" despite internet connection being fine. When I receive a software update message;I say install and it starts updating then stops after 2 seconds. Help! (It is a 3rd gen IPod touch(I think)). Presumably as a result of this, I have tried to put my library onto my gf's new iPod touch and it just charges it..doesn't download my library onto the touch).

    Update Server
    Try:
    - Powering off and then back on your router.
    - iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
    - Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
    Public DNS — Google Developers
    OpenDNS IP Addresses
    - For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
    - Try on another computer/network
    - Wait if it is an Apple problem

  • ATV Airplay (audio only) starts then stops

Pretty much what the subject says. I'll start audio playback from iTunes 11.0.4 to 3rd-gen ATV that is running latest OS 5.2.1. Music plays for 1-2 seconds then stops. Sometimes I can start it again, but it will stop. Usually I can't start it again. The only fix has been to reset ATV by turning off the power, waiting a minute or so, then turning it back on. Then music will play for hours until I stop it when I leave or go to sleep. A short stop doesn't have a problem but a long stop say overnight will usually cause the problem to happen again.
This ATV is a replacement for one that had bad wifi; the old one was much worse than the replacement but the problem still happens.

airparrot is an alt to airplay mirror
airplay mirror is cloning what you see and hear on the mac to the tv over the appletv
airplay audio is using airport express and appletv as remote speakers one can use multiple at the same time
I have an appletv 1g the old alu one and an airport express so under my airplay icon right of the volume bar in the top of itunes 11.1.1 I have the options
    computer
    appletv
    airport express
if you don't have the icon looks like this
    http://cdn.cultofmac.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/itunes11airplaymultiplecontr ol1.jpg
then maybe your itunes is too old
or the appletv is not present on the same subnetwork as the computer some routers keep 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz and ethernet on seperate networks and one have to bridge them
sometimes if my appletv don't want to show up on the list I can get it to by on the appletv starting a song and then stopping it again
    my imac is 21.5" mid2011
and it also works fine with wifes macbook pro 13" from 2009 or something along those lines

  • Cartoons play a few seconds then stops, then starts, then stops, just started doing this

My grandson likes to watch a cartoon with me in the evening, suddenly when I bring them up now they start to play, then stops, then starts, this just started happening, my grandson would appreciate any help resolving this.  Thanks

Check to make sure your video is loading.
The red indicates what has already played and the white indicated the portion of the video that is loaded but unplayed.  If you have no white bar and the movie plays and then stops it is because your video is having trouble loading in which case you wil want to select a lower quality video by clicking on the gear icon.
YouTube uses a program called Adobe Flash player to play the cartoons. If your seeing the white bar in front of your video, the first thing I would try would be to remove the Adobe Flash software and reinstall the latsest version. Allow me to explain how to do this:
Step 1: Download the Adobe Flash uninstaller from here, for help running the uninstaller Adobe has good directions on their website which you can view here.
Step 2: Once you receive the notice that Adobe Flash player has been successfully removed, download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player here.  If you need help running this installer Adobe again has good insturctions here.
Once finished, go back to the YouTube cartoon you are having trouble with and let us know if your still having any issues.

  • Wifi sync starts then stops

iTunes doesn't see my iPhone 5s as being on the same network except for about 10s when iTunes first starts up. It sees it, tries to sync, then it stops (sometimes iTunes gets locked up) and then the iPhone disappears from next to the library and then it's gone. I've worked with with Norton and both Bonjour and all the Apple devices seem ok in the firewall... I am not sure what to try.

Never mind about the message display, it looks fine now.  Perhaps just a temporary thing.  (Aside: Is anyone else bothered that after signing in Apple doesn't redirect back to the page from which you signed in?)
After quite some troubleshooting I found if I uninstalled the antivirus (Symantec.cloud, which is basically Norton Internet Security on non-Servers) and turned off Windows Firewall, it still won't connect/sync.  I get the same 10 seconds or so of starting, then it disconnects/disappears from iTunes.  At that point I am not able to ping the phone.
Further if I ping my phone, my wife's 5s, or our iPad 2 (iOS 7) I usually get "Destination host unreachable" or "Request timed out" until I do something on my phone.  Pinging to an old 3GS works every time.  So it seems like iOS 7 is either turning off networking when it thinks it is not being used, or perhaps throwing up a firewall of its own until the networking is in use.  That may or may not be relevant but in the end if the Symantec software is not installed that's not the problem...the problem would seem to be with iTunes/iOS 7/iPhone 5s.
