Re: Satellite P300 - POST screen blank on booting up and very slow start up

Hi,
I have a laptop Satellite P300. On booting up vista the microsoft logo comes up and then when the POST screen should be showing me what the bios is checking the screen is blank.
It remains blank for 5 to 10 mins then the pointer appears then it finally goes to the desktop.
I suspect the bios is hanging on something but I can't see cos the screen is blank. I suspect there is a setting somewhere. I can enter the bios but can't find anything in there.
Also regards to the extremely slow boot, I have disabled nearly all the start up programs but it has made no difference.
Has anyone any ideas?
Thanks

Hi
Everything runs slowly but finally the Windows OS boots up properly. Right?
Hmm. you can access the BIOS press F2 immediately after power button has been pressed.
This should allow you to access the BIOS. There you should press F9 to set the BIOS to default settings. Save the changes and reboot the unit again.
Additionally I would recommend checking the HDD. You could use a tool called Drive Fitness Test. This tool can be downloaded for free (google for that).
By the way; did you try to recover the notebook using recover disk?
Maybe you should try this but note; this would format the HDD so backup the date before starting recovery.

A warm welcome to Macdom & Apple's forums!
You may need to reinstall some things, or maybe even the whole OS.
How much free space is on the HD of what size?
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!

You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Satellite P300 1CN blue & blank screen

    Hi,
I was working away on an excel sheet on my toshiba satellite p300-1cn yesterday evening. After an hour or so I left the notebook on the table and went to prepare dinner. 30mins later when i returned to the notebook the screen was black which i though odd as my picture slide show kicks in after 15 mins. I tried pressing keys and mouse to 'wake' the screen back up but no luck.
Since then my laptop screen will not come on.I hooked up an external monitor and got a display. I then clicked start in 'normal mode' as I was asked. Unfortunately it then proceeded to blue screen and restart. I tried safe mode and got in. I ran a chkdsk but nothing showed up. I tried a recovery to previous date but alas no luck. I disabled the ATI graphics card and tried to restart and again nothing. Still works with external monitor but only in safe mode.
    Can anyone help me?
My bios was update by toshiba in January so it's up to date.

  • Satellite P300 with screen turning pink

    Hi
My Satellite P300 is model PSPCCA-OC6O1Y. The problem I have is a lot of pink on the screen. This has been reoccuring over the last week with this morning the worst. Presently I have two distinct pink pencil lines running down the screen just right of middle, and I also have many other random pink pixles jumping all over the place.
Earlier today what would normally be white on the screen is pink and moving which made it almost impossible to see the screen and use the machine. A shut down and restart has bought it back to a useable position, although the problem has not gone away. On restart no sign of pink on the screen during the normal bootup - no sign of pink on the log in page and pink started as soon as either the browser or email apps were activated. It does go across all programs - I cannot isolate it to any one program, so I suspect it is not a program specific issue.
I am not a techie, just a user, so if the reply can be in simple to understand language that would be appreciated. The machine is under warranty, however I am trying to avoid downtime for repair which is critical if possible.
    Thanks for your help

    Hi Fletch,
Did you connect an external monitor to your notebook? With this external device you can identify the reason of this issue. That means if the external monitor works properly, it seems to be related to the internal display that must be changed.
As Jeka-IL wrote, contact nearest authorized service provider in your country. The guys will try to help you and if your notebook is under warranty, the repair is for free.

PLUS if i plug the Usb HDD's to my PC, this duration gets longer... I already tried with Only SSD, nothing changed...
2-) in 5.0 bios version, i can o.c. to my CPU 45 X 101 = 4,5 ghz with Auto 1,338 voltage (1,28 v under LINX test). My Elder Brother forced me to update bios, now i cant hit 4,5 ghz... even 4,4 ghz, windows restarts, mostly pc dont boot up... i hit Hardly 4,3 ghz with 42 X 102,4 = 4,3 ghz... with bios 5,2 my pc starts problem like this:

my brother buys a mobo (exact same of me), for curiosity he flashed its bios 5.0 to 5.2 and from this moment mobo can't react ANYTHİNG.. tried so many things and didnt solved problem...
Than he bring all the system to me, i tried 3-4 times and unsuccesful tries... After that i get suspicious about his ram than changed with my ram... Vailoo!! it worked..
Than he flashed my mobo 5.0 to 5.2 .... Funny thing is, This 4 gb high Level ram working with 5.0 bios, and not working with 5.2 bios.... we realized that ram is

  • Need help with Leopard: screen saver glitch and very slow internet

I performed an erase and install leopard 10.5.1 on my upgraded G4 AGP Sawtooth Computer several times. Has anyone had the following 2 problems with leopard and any suggestions to solve them? Apple telephone support has not helped thus far. The Issues include:
1-Internet surfing (Safari and Firefox) is extremely slow worse than dial-up. I have verizon fios. Upgrading leopard to 10.5.3 and upgrading Safari did not help and took about 10 hours to download when it should have been quick.
2- A screen saver glitch: When I click on screen saver such as beach I get this message. " Screen saver "beach" did not load properly. Error Can't load bundle" When I click on the screen savers folder, there is nothing in it. Desktop pictures work fine.
    Computer upgrades include:
Processor-OWC Mercury Extreme [email protected] 2MB L3 Cache
    2GB memory
    Two 120GB hardrives.
    Firmware is updated.
Thus far, all this was done:
Apple exchanged install disk. Same results with new disk.
I ran disk utility and everything is ok including permissions.
I performed a safe boot with apple support.
I Threw away cache folder and com.apple.safari.plist
Tried firefox with same very slow surfing results.
I even checked file system structure problem fsck -yf. Everything was ok
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Althought the behavior is the same in all three accounts, if all are working accounts I would suspect there is something all of them have installed that could be the source of the problem. Try creating a new admin account, and leave it just the way Apple creates it--don't add anything nor modify it in any way. Log into that account and see if it works correctly.
If that account is also misbehaving, try restarting, and when you hear the chime hold down the Shift key so that you boot into Safe Mode (you'll see a notice in the splash screen about being in Safe Mode). The boot will take longer (perhaps even considerably longer) as the system runs disk repair, empties some caches, disables all third party startup items, as well as all Apple startup items not strictly necessary for the machine to run. See the menus and Dock now behave correctly.
Since the problem is evidently somewhat intermittent in nature it may take some patience to discover what is wrong. You might also disconnect everything that didn't come with the Mac, reboot, and use only the Apple keyboard and Apple mouse and run for a bit to see how that works. If you are using a third party mouse that required installing something that would be my guess as a "prime suspect" for the cause of the problems.

  • Grey screen and spinning wheel - and very slow iBook?

I have been looking around, and am afraid my sister's beloved (and heavily used ibook may have a common problem. Just now, she was trying to access our myspace page, but it was loading terribly slowly, so she tried to force quit - and it wouldn't quit. So she forced it to quit by holding down apple/option escape and then shut it down. On turning on the machine again, it began booting normally, but very slowly - the grey wheel was spinning a minute or more later, and she could not use force quit to stop the machine from booting.
I advised her to hold down the power button for five seconds to force the machine to shut down, and told her that tomorrow I would come over and run maintenance on it and also post her problem here. From the reading I've been doing, it sounds scarily like the logic board thing, but it's also true she has very little space left on her hard drive, so it could be that - or maybe something else entirely? I intend to start from her system disc, do the hardware test, repair and verify the permissions, and, if necessary, reinstall the system. Is there anything else we should do?
It's an ibook g4 1.2mhz, with at least 640 megs of ram but only a 30 gb hard drive. TIA for your help! Oh - she's running panther, and has had the machine for 3 years with no serious problems, except that hers had one of the defective batteries. Apple sent her a replacement battery two years ago.

    Hi Mary.
I ideally you need to keep at least 15% of the HD capacity for the system to run smoothly. On a 30GB drive it's easy to use more than you should. Having less free space would make a big difference to the performance. Sounds like a good time to get rid of/back up unneccesary files that don't need to be on the HD. Also, the HD may have become quite fragmented which would also play a part in slowing things down. Once you have things backed up, could be a good time to reinstall a fresh system. You should notice an improvement.

  • Home button no longer working, screen not responding half the time, very slow functioning and random crashing?? What is going on?

I got my IPhone 4 (GSM) a couple of years back, and had never had any trouble with it. As soon as the new updates came out (this past summer), the phone has been glitching out (randomly screen going black, or closing an app by itself, super slow functioning, screen not responding to touch and home button not working anymore).
Help anyone? Makes no sense why it would just stop working.. ??

it depends. i had an iPhone 3GS that was not good in the first place, but functionable. when i got iOS6 it just acted weird like yours. Have you ever dropped your phone or anything? Or maybe you should try closing your apps. For the home button. Go to Settings:General:Accsessibility:Scroll down;Assistive Touch: On. That part is hard to explain but self explanatory,
    i hope this helps!

  • Satellite X205 black screen failure to boot

    Satellite X205-S7483 Vista HP (Part# PSPB9U-03S026)
Laptop fails to boot, never shows even a glimmer on the screen (so I can't determine the BIOS type or version).  Sometimes -- but not always -- it makes three beeps at POST, one long and two short.  Otherwise it never makes a sound, no "loading Windoze" chime, no matter how long I wait.  I've tested the RAM in another laptop and it checks okay, and I've put "known good" RAM in it and it doesn't change anything.
Is a bad GPU the only other possibility?

  • Satellite A60 - White Screen Freeze on Boot up

    Hi
My laptop Satellite A60-106 has developed some problem on boot up. It just freezes onto a white screen on boot up before I see any graphics. It looks as though it can access the DVD/CD drive but any attempt to boot up with a recovery disc fails in the same white screen and it freezes. I have tried the manufacturers advice as powering up with the F12 key pressed and another suggestion on the
CD to hold the C key down whilst turning on the power brings the same result.
Nothing but the white screen. I have tried F8 to see if I can get into safe mode but it won't move on past the initial clunking of the drives and then silence. I can't think of any way to get this to allow me to move on. I am sure you can though? I would be happy to format and reload but if I can't access the drive then how can I do that?
I wanted to increase the RAM but all of the suggestions in the hand book do not relate to the layout of my laptop. The small access window on the bottom of the laptop will not allow enough access to the RAM? Poking about around the RAM might have induced this white screen lock out?
    Thanks
    Charlie

    Hello Charlie
To be honest you have serious problem and I really do not believe you can solve it alone. It is not easy to say for sure why white display occurs at the boot up. In my opinion there can be several reasons responsible for this.
    - Display (display cable, LCD electronic)
    - as far as I know white screen occurs if FL inverter makes background light but there is no display signal it can be some defect on mainboard and there is no video signal
The best thing you can do is to contact authorized service provider. Let them check your notebook. They have special tools and there is no problem to find out why this happen.
    Bye

  • Screen blank on boot up

    I have a SunFire V490
Recently when the server is rebooted the screen goes blank from when the CDE is shutdown to when it is started up again.
Has anyone got any ideas what might be causing this?
I've had a quick look in messages but can't find anything in there. I've had a look at eeprom:
    eeprom | grep device
    output-device=ttya
    input-device=ttya
From what I have read this is valid.
It does run through a KVM but I have also tried it with a monitor and keyboard plugged directly in but got the same problem.
    Many thanks
    Paul.

    Paul;
    POST: Power On Self Test
POST is a PROM-resident piece of software that resides in the on-board flash PROM of the I/O board. POST performs simple, component level, hardware fault detection and isolation tests on the server hardware.
When you say: "....Recently when the server is rebooted....". Rebooting means that Server will go into POST. So I guess this is the why you see that "screen goes blank". POST output is redirected to the serial port.
With the RSC configured you will be able to see POST in the console and check for any HW condition. Actually I will suggest that you install it. It will help you in a future to detect the root cause of unexplained reboots, system crash, etc.
    Regards.

  • Satellite P300-156 - Screen wont come on

    Hi
When I turn on the laptop, all the LEDs come on as normal, including the touchpad strip and media buttons, but the screen is totally blank. I hear the hard disk being accessed and see its LED flickering as per a normal bootup, but the screen is totally blank through the entire bootup, and never switches on.
There doesnt seem to be any consistency with the problem. This is twice its happened now in 2 days, and it took me about half an hour on both occasions to eventually get the screen to come to life by doing many power on/power offs (holding down the power button), removing/reinserting the battery.
Has anyone come across this problem before? Any ideas as to a solution?
I'm guessing its a ribbon cable issue perhaps.
    Many thanks

    Hi
It seems that you had some other problems with this unit in the past as described in the other thread: http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=237201
Both issues could be related to the motherboard malfunction fact is that removing battery and ac adaptor cannot be a real solution. This temporal workaround might help to wakup the notebook from time to time but usually this is not a common notebook behavior therefore I think its more hardware related issue and this means that only an notebook technician might be able to help you in most cases the hardware checks are needed

  • Satellite P300-P19: screen is too bright

    Hi all
I have a P300-P19, the screen is so bright, its set at LEVEL 17.
I have to use FN + F6 to drop it to LEVEL 1 constantly.
Does anyone know how to set it so it stays at the LEVEL you want ?
And is there any other options for contract etc etc
Its even to bright at LEVEL 1 but i do hate bright lights... :-)
    Thanks in advance..
    Rob

LOL :D if you hate true bright screens so why you buy devices which support such True Bright screen technology?
I love such screens I like it in the LCD TV, external PC LCD and in notebooks...
However, if you want to use constantly low screen brightness then I recommend changing the screen brightness option in the Vista Power settings.
    Check the forums HowTo area.
There you can find nice document called How to handle the power managment features of Windows Vista?

  • Satellite P300 PSPCCA - screen went pink

    Hi,
I am running the above model notebook.
Using it last night for a couple of hours and the screen went pink, I have tried a couple of system restores to no avail, it is not screen res settings I have checked them.
At a loss of what it might be, anyone got any advice on fixing it?
Whole screen is pink, I have a light shadow behind my mouse, some graphics come up in purple/pink shades.
    thanks

    Hi
There are two possible faulty parts; either its graphic card or its a display.
If the same pink display would be visible on external monitor then the issue is related to faulty graphic chip.
If the external monitor would be ok, then the issue is related only to the notebooks screen.
