Re: Satellite U400-15G - Can I upgrade it to a Core2Duo CPU?

Hello,
Iam Benji from Germany and ive got a question about my new Sattelite U400-15G.
Installed is a DualCore T3200, now ive fugured out, that the Notebook runs on a G45 Express Chipset
that supports much better Core2Duo CPUs with lower energy.
But i dont know exactly, which Cpu Port ive Got, and which FSB the maximum of my Notebook is...
800 / 1066 is what i find about the chipset G45 in the interhnet...but its quite better to ask here
around, before buying an new cpu, which isnt working ;)

First of all one general information;
I read here in the forum that the CPU upgrade is not supported by Toshiba
This means that even you will be able to upgrade the CPU, nobody will be able to say if your notebook would run stable or not furthermore the BIOS has not been designed for other CPUs and there is a high risk that there could be a compatibility issue.
Regarding the chipset:
Luke is right. The notebook has been equipped with Mobile Intel GL40 Express Chipset and with the Pentium Dual Core T3200 (2.00GHZ) 667MHZ CPU
Here the Intel page about Core 2 Duo mobile CPUs
http://ark.intel.com/ProductCollection.aspx?familyID=26548
and here you CPU:
http://ark.intel.com/cpu.aspx?groupId=29760
Here the details about Mobile Intel GL40 Express Chipset
http://www.intel.com/Products/Notebook/Chipsets/GL40/GL40-overview.htm
PS: I dont understand why a CPU upgrade is so important for you; to be honest you will not notice any strong performance boosts after CPU upgrade and in my opinion the risks are too high that the notebook would not run stable

  • Satellite U400-15E - Can't boot from new USB HDD

    Hello.
Recently a bought an external WD My Book with 3TeraByte to use with my Satellite U400-15E. I can use it inside Windows 7 Ultimate with no problem. But if I try to boot from it (by pressing F12 key), the BIOS doesn't even see the drive.
Is this because Toshiba doesn't use Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI)? UEFI BIOS can overcome the 2.19TB limitation in todays computers easily, like the following Western Digital document explains:
This would allow me to use my new external drive to store a Ghost image of my Toshiba's internal HDD for instance. I mean 3TB and even greater capacities are a reality today. When will Toshiba update their BIOSes to support UEFI?
    Equipment used:
    Toshiba Satellite U400-15E (BIOS v5.00 26-10-2010)
Western Digital My Book Essential 3TeraByte - Firmware v1.014 (USB 3.0 interface)
    MS Windows 7 Ultimate - 32bit version
    Thank you

    Hello
Well... with this same computer, I already tried booting (successfully) from the following pendrive capacities:
    8GB
    16GB
    32GB
    All without problem.
And besides, before having the 3TeraByte WD, I had a 1TeraByte Iomega USB HDD from which I could store Ghost images, because the BIOS would show the 1TB Iomega drive after pressing F12 and Symantec Ghost could also detect the drive without problems.
But with this new 3TeraByte WD... the BIOS doesn't even show the drive after pressing F12.
So when you say +{color:#0000ff}So USB HDDs are not supported{color}+ are you refering booting from USB HDD?
Hum... I'm not sure about that.
I never tried booting an OS from the Iomega.
But that was never my purpose either.
My purpose is for the BIOS (and hopefully Symantec Ghost) to detect the WD USB drive, like it happened before with the 1TeraByte Iomega.
I was using a 1TeraByte Iomega "Select Series" drive.
With the Iomega I could create Ghost images of my Toshiba without a problem.
+{color:#0000ff}But you’re absolutely right: 3TB and greater capacities are reality today but Satellite U400 is older notebook model and not newest one.{color}+
A Laptop computer that has Two 64bit CPU cores and 8GB RAM capacity is not that old!
I think it could be a BIOS limitation, since it's not using UEFI.
    Any more ideas?
    Thank you.

  • Satellite L655-149 - Can I upgrade from Intel Core i5 to i7?

    Hi everybody,
I have Satellite L655-149 Satellite. Can I replace the processor from Core i5 to Core i7 and how?
    Thank you.

    Hey,
Theoretically you can upgrade the CPU but if you do this you will loose your warranty and everything happens on your own risk. Furthermore its not supported from Toshiba that means nobody can say if the new CPU would work properly or not.
    You should check this article:

  • Satellite C850-1G2 can't upgrade Win 8 to 8.1

When I try to upgrade Win 8 to 8.1 I get a message that says update Win 8 first.
When I try to update Win 8 I get 132 updates.
I have spent many hours trying to perform this task but the updates are not installed.
I tried using the troubleshooting tool which did some fixes and allowed me to install some updates but now nothing will install. There are still 85 updates which won't install.
The computer seems to hang a lot and run slowly. I have also performed a complete fresh install and recovery several times. I purchased the computer second hand.
I am tearing my hair out.
    Can anyone please help?

    Hi
I think first of all perform a complete shutdown in Windows 8

  • Satellite 1900-303: Can I upgrade the Hard Drive up to 120GB

I've a S1900-303 and I'm thinking of upping the Hard Drive to 120gb. What problems, if any, will I encounter and can I do it froom the Toshiba boot disk or should I just install XP from a XP disk?

    Hi
As far as I can remember the Satellite 1900-303 was delivered with the 30GB HDD.
So in my opinion the 120GB HDD size is a little bit too big and I presume the notebook BIOS will not recognize this HDD!!!
    I think you can use a 40GB, 60GB and maybe a 80GB HDD.
PS: you should search for the HDD with the enhanced IDE (ATA-5) interface!!!
Good luck and have a nice day

  • Satellite U400-112: can't format local disk (damaged MFT?)

    Hello!
I got rather serious problem with my HDD.
    HDD 250Gb
    C: 116Gb - NTFS - Windows XP (Vista initially)
    D: 1,5Gb - NTFS - (Vista Recover?..)
E: 117Gb - RAW (was NTFS before crash)
MFT of local drive E: was damage because of the virus attack (I hope not because of my foolishness!). It was NTFS, now it is RAW. I recovered all necessary data from lost partition with program ZAR, but all my attempts to recover or just format E: remained unsuccessful.
No bad sectors found on HDD. Windows standard tool for formatting disks fails: "It is impossible to finish formatting of E:".
Before this problem with drive E:, I got several difficulties with HDD. I have never re-divided disks, as from the very beginning Partition Magic identified it incorrectly. I tried Partition Magic 7 and 8.
    Link: [ Error screensaver|http://cs1498.vkontakte.ru/u169802/154397/x_3a82b4fb.jpg]
The problem is that special programs (I tried "Find and Mount") also could not identify partitions to correct defected MFT. I thought that low level format may help me, but i heard, what use of any applications from other producers can probably destroy my HDD. Are there any special applications from Toshiba developed for such cases? Or you may advice me something else?
    Thanks for your help!
P.S. These applications didn't helped me:
Find and Mount (doesn't find HDD)
Acronis Recovery Expert (doesn't find HDD)
OnTrack EasyRecovery Professional (didn't fix error, but helped with data recovering)
    HDD Regenerator

So have you recovered all your important data?
I would just run Recovery to restore the HDD back to its factory state. If Recovery fails, you can try removing the partitions using FDISK from an MSDOS boot disk. Free bootdisks can be found at www.bootdisk.com
FDISK can also repair a Master Boot Record by running this command: FDISK /MBR
But its not 100% reliable, it could cause more harm than good.

I think the DMI information needs updating. The service center should have done this when the mainboard was replaced, so take it back to them and ask them to update it.

  • Satellite U400-17R: Cannot find a Win7 upgrade offer on webpage

    I have a Satellite U400-17R model PC.
Long ago i accessed the support page of my PC.
At that time i could UPGRADE my Vista to a Windows 7 BUT at that time i didn`t have a valid "Credit Card/Visa".
Now, i do have a valid Visa so i would like to get an Upgrade from Vista to 7.
The problem is i can't find my support page nor the upgrade page.
I'm willing to buy the 7 upgrade from" Toshiba".
    Can anyone help?
Where can i buy a 7 upgrade from Toshiba?(ONLINE from their official MIDDLE EAST Website)
Where can i find my support page?
NOTES: I bought this U400 from a distributor of Toshiba in the MIDDLE EAST...

    Hi DarknessSx,
I think the upgrade is finished now as Akuma wrote. This option was only available for a certain period and this time is over now.
If you want to upgrade to Windows 7 you have to buy a copy from Microsoft. With this disk you can upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 too.

  • Can I install Vista Home Premium 64-Bit on my Satellite U400?

    Hi
In another thread I posted a problem regarding no rescue disk for the pre-installed OS Grrr....
Anyway, I am thinking of upgrading the OS to 64-bit - does anyone know if this is possible on the Satellite U400? I checked the processor specs on Intel website and it seems the processor can....but what about the rest of the machine?
    Thanks,
    Peter

Well, yes. You should take a hardware inventory from Sysinfo or device manager and then for each specific devie locate and download a driver.
When you uprade to Vista 64 bit, then any driver not found during the install can be acquired from your download. Vista is usually well equipped with drivers, except for Toshiba proprietary devices.

  • Can I upgrade the T2310 CPU in Satellite Pro L40-15D series laptop?

Hi, ( I apologise if this has been asked before but when I search ' Satellite pro l40 series' I found no relevant answers )
I've been searching around the net & so far found some conflicting answers to this question so hopefully this forum may be able to help.
    I have a Satellite pro L40 15D laptop and I wish to upgrade the Intel Pentium Dual-Core 1.46 Ghz T2310 CPU to a Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4300 2.1GHz 1MB 800 CPU or something similar.
I have found the following information from http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Toshiba-Satellite-L40-14N-Notebook.7294.0.html
" f you consider a CPU upgrade, there are not many options available. The Intel GL960 express notebook chip set supports only up to 533 Mhz FSB processors. So, most of the up-to-date Core 2 Duo CPUs (with 667MHz) cannot be used. "
But then I have also read that the GL960 can run processors of 800Mhz?.
I also asked the question on ebay from the seller of the T2310 CPU & received this answer
"SHOULD be okay, but your T2310 has 533Mhz FSB and the T4300 has 800Mhz.
Most modern intel motherboards should easily accept an 800mhz cpu, but I cannot guarantee. Might be an idea to see if you can find out if there are other models of Toshiba L40 that also have 800mhz chips, as that would be a good indicator.
And if I can not upgrade too a T2310 because of the 800mhz is their a 533mhz cpu that will be compatible & more powerful for audio production than my current 1.46 Ghz T2310 CPU.
I have only had this PC 4 years from new,it would seem to me to be not very resource friendly if this laptop has not be designed to handle upgrades.
    Thanks for any guidance.

    To quote
'Problem is that CPU upgrade is not supported and all you do is on your own risk.

    Helpful link thanks :-)
Of course any upgrade I did personally would be entirely at my own risk .
So it's not a good idea as mentioned .
I would still like to know if technically it is possible and if so it's most probably been done & maybe works fine, rather then half answers .

Alternatively do you guys have any suggestions, other than buying a new laptop, of ways to increase the performance for music production.
I already have 1.99 GB of ram installed .
Would using a external USB sound card and bypassing the internal sound card give me a little more processing power . I believe it's the real time processing of audio effects etc that make audio production demanding on a cpu.Could that processing somehow be shared with a pro audio card? .
Either way thanks for the help guys :-)

    hi,
I have a satellite u400-20v. There was no problem at first to read or burn a CD or DVD but after I setup windows 7 ultimate. my cd rom now can read both CDs and DVDs and can burn DVDs but can't burn CDs (data or audio). The burner gives me an error msg as soon as it begins writing the  cd. My optical drive is called Mat**bleep**a DVD-RAM UJ862AS ATA device (at the device manger).

    Thanx

iTunes can be a bit flaky on 64 bit Vista since it's not supported but it has been known to work.
Try updating your CD/DVD drivers here -> http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.cfm
Also, make sure the your other firmware & drivers are up to date.

    on satellite X200-245 : can i install a second hard drive ?
    is it possible ?
There is a place for it but no sata connection on the mother board where can i find this connector

No you cannot install the second HDD because there is no HDD connector which would allows to connect the HDD to the mobo.
And No, its not possible to upgrade the mobo with such connector.
The X200 has the two HDD bays because some X200 support 2 HDDs and some dont support it.
Your X200 doesnt support 2 HDD
