Re: Satellite won't start up due to virus

One of my computers got a virus and it was passed onto my Satellite Toshiba Notebook by a USB stick.
Now when i turn my laptop on, the Screen lights up, but remains blank (except for the mouse).
I tried System Restore- it didn't work; I had three restrore points- and each of them said that the system restore did not work successfully due to a system error.
I also checked the memory and everything- but I'm avoiding the System Recovery (the one where all files will be deleted) as i desperately need to keep my files.
What can i do to solve my problem??

Probably too lat now but here's hoping. If you were able to try a system restore then the computer is working but Windows is broken. Get along to WHSmith or your favourite newsagent and find a Linux magazine with a free distribution of Linux that can be run from the cd/dvd. Change the BIOS setting on your laptop to boot from CD/dvd (optical drive) and re-boot with the Linux disc in the cdrom drive. You should then be able to access your data on the hard drive and write it to a memory stick or 3 (or more), Remember it is only the data you want but do not forget your email address book.
VERY IMPORTANT. When you put the memory stick in another computer, get it scanned by you anti-virus software before doing anything else. Do not even "open folder to view files" until you have run the virus scan.
If you have only one memory stick and too much data, save the first batch to another computer AFTER the virus check then note what has been transferred, clear the memory stick and go back to the laptop for the next instalment. Repeat process as often as necessary until all data is retrieved, remembering to virus scan the stick each time before dumpinng its content to another computer.
When all your data is safe, run the Toshiba system restore.
Sorry this response is so long after the event but this is the first time I have looked at the forums.
As you might guess, I am a retired computer support professional. Do not be afraid of Linux. A free "distro" that runs from the cd/dvd will not need to install anything on your Hard Disk Drive and is not complicated to run.
My own solution would be to remove the hdd and install it in a usb portable drive enclosure but that would probably invalidate your warranty.

  • Arch won't start , probably due to Catalyst

    Hello,
I have a small (Big) problem on my computer , that probleme made me whype my HDD thrice for now , because like said in the title my ARCH setup won't start , so here is the problem : The loading is stuck after those few lines :
//Talking about the number of blocks in /dev/sda3
[ OK ]Reached dhcpcd on eno1
[ OK ]Reached target Multi-user system
[ OK ]Reached target Graphical Interface
    [ OK ]Reached target Network
The things I know about this problem :
    -First happened when installing Catalyst
-I did a very small install with the base / base-devel / skype / gnome / gnome-extra / xorg and the Unoficial catalyst repo (I think I forget nothing ...)
-It happened with or without xf86-video-ati
-It is stuck there. It won't let me do anything
-Due to the xorg116 bug with catalyst I used the unofficial xorg115 repo each time
Unfortunately each time I did a
    systemctl enable gdm
so I can't do any test.
Anyone has a clue of what is happening ? I tried using lxdm for example , but since it did not work very fast , I did not use it , and I had forgoten to add Catalyst that time.
So should I stick with the xf86-video-ati , use lxdm (or an other display manager) or do another thing ?

So know , with tying to use the startx command I think I can say that the problem is not GNOME but the drivers ....
Because startx crashed , and the log (http://pastebin.com/tTndn5ep) complains about a "dri3" module that is not found (look at about line 610)
This is a more problematic thing I think
And by the way I don't have the package xorg-twm

  • Toshiba Satellite Won't start up

I have a toshiba satellite L655D-S5095 laptop. I bought it from a rent to own store. It came with no discs or a manual. I was online this morning when my PC froze up and stopped responding. A blue box with a message about the bios. I turned it off and back on All I can see is a black screen with a spinning circle. I then took out the battery and plugged it up straight and tried safe mode to use recovery but it shows no dates anymore. I used f8 and ran the start up tool but it didn't work. The only thing that's left is the recovery wizard. Do I need the start up disc also with this? Will windows 7 home premium program still be on my laptop if I use wizard? I am afraid of messing it up to the point of no return. Please help

If you want to bet some money that the hardware is okay, try to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. You can obtain it them from Toshiba. Scroll down to Get Recovery Media here .
For instructions, see the section Restoring from recovery DVDs/media, which begins on p. 71 of the User's Guide.

  • Satellite won't start

My old laptop is a Satellite M65-S9092 running XP Media Center, almost 9 years old.  Never ever gave me a problem until now. Don't use it all that much, but it has some CAD and graphics programs on it I can't port over to my desktop Win 8 machine.
When I hit the power button I hear the fan for a few seconds and then nothing.  The power light goes out, the HD light goes out, and the screen never showed anything.
I've tried things I've read here; swapped memory modules, reset the power, pulled the HD, no battery, plug only, battery and no plug, and no change.  I'm guessing it's a hardware failure of some sort.  Could the motherboard battery cause this?
    Help!

could be the cmos battery but I would suspect something (hardware) else is wrong w/motherboard.  It may be a challenge to find replacement parts for the old girl any more.

  • Satellite A65 won't start and I get only blue screen!

When I start my satellite A65 a blue screen comes up saying "a problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer"
it says to check if I have adequate disk space or to either disable or update the driver if a driver was mentioned in the stop message... or to check bios updates...
I can type out everything it says if I need to, but that the jist
Does this sound familiar to anybody?
It might be because I didn't update enough when it told me to.
It won't start, not even on safe mode, and it won't let me restore, which I would be perfectly willing to do at this point.
    help, please

    Hi
Usually the Blue screen of death happens due to the serious software problem or due to the hardware malfunction.
In your case it sounds more like something wrong with the hardware. Why, because you are not able to restore the notebook from the delivered Toshiba recovery CD!
What to do buddy? I think the notebook must be checked.
Try to contact an ASP in your country and ask for the further handling!
    Good luck

  • Satellite L30 PSL33E won't start at all - LED flashes six times

    Hello,
My poor mother is quite distraught! Her Satellite L30 PSL33E has just died.
It completely shut down and now won't start at all.
Orange light flashes six times when the power button is pressed.
No hard drive, fan, screen or any other noise / activity.
She has tried it without the battery.
Some sort of hardware failure I imagine.
Any ideas what this blink code means?
    Thanks in advance,
    D.

I dont know what the code means but you can read it; short means 0 and long means 1
Anyway, the error code means that an hardware fault was detected on the motherboard and only the motherboard replacement could help you?
    Why?
because is really hard to repair a notebooks motherboard.
Its mostly not possible if you dont have enough knowledge, experience and special tools.
I think either you will contact the ASP in your country and will ask for a fix or you will have to buy a new notebook ;(

  • Satellite P300-13M won't start at all

    Hello everybody,
my Satellite P300 - 13M with product number PSPC4E won't start at all!
When I put down my screen, it automatically goes in hibernation mode. But the last time I did this was just too much apparently.. I've ejected my battery and put the adapter in to see if it would start. Negative. I've put the battery back and ejected the adapter. Negative. I've connected both the battery and adapter. Negative, no result at all.
Does this mean the end of my laptop?
Please help me as fast you guys can because this is my only working laptop.
    Many thanks
Ps if you want specifications, then i cannot give you them. I don't know the specs by heart.

On this virtual way it is not easy to say what is wrong there but if there is no reaction at all Im afraid mainboard is death.
In my opinion repair is probably not the solution. New motherboard costs a lot of money. Either you can find used one, maybe refurbished and exchange it or sell notebook on eBay and buy new one.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • My MacBook won't start up properly, and I suspect it may be the result of a power surge due to faulty wiring in my apartment.  Is this the kind of thing that can typically be repaired, and if so, at what price?

My MacBook won't start properly.  It seems to run, but the screen won't light.  I suspect the cause is a power surge due to faulty wiring in my apartment.  Is this the kind of thing that can typically be repaired, and if so, at what price?

you need to bring it somewhere so it can be determined exactly what is wrong with it and then an estimate can be provided.

  • Satellite Pro A200 - System won't start

    Hi,
was wondering if anyone could help?
My Satellite Pro A200 with windows XP won't start. It begins with the Toshiba screen.
Then goes to a black screen with text where it says "PXEE61 media test failure - check cable" (I have no cables) then says exiting PXErom; moves onto the next screen which lists options: safe mode; safe mode with networking; safe mode with communal prompt; Last known Good Configeration; start windows normally.
All of which have been tried and results in the windows loading page coming up for about 20 secs then it just gives up and tries the whole process all over again (before flashing a blue screen).
Nothing seems to work - have tried taking the battery out a number oftimes...and the power cable but to no avail.
This has happened before but after a few false starts gets going - however this time it just won't snap out of it. I could take it in to some where locally but i'd prefer not to as I'm living in Spain and need the laptop asap and not sure I want to leave it in some one else's hands at the risk of them wiping the hard drive.
I'd be so so grateful for any help asap and I'm afraid short hand tech may have to be explained.
    Many, many thanks.

    Hi
I think the problem is that the OS cannot be found on the HDD.
The PXEE61 media test failure - check cable appears mostly if the notebook tries to boot from the LAN.
Why the notebook tries to boot from the LAN?
    Well,
    - maybe the LAN option was chooses at first in the booting order in the BIOS
    - maybe the HDD is faulty and therefore the notebook tries to boot from LAN
    - maybe the MBR (master boot record) is faulty
I think you should take the Toshiba recovery CD and should format the HDD and should reinstall the OS.
    This should helps.
If not, then the HDD could malfunctions and should be replaced!

  • Satellite A100 - Won't start up Windows

Without changing anything, my Satellite A100 won't start up Windows.
A screen with with Windows foutherstel (failure recovery) gives two options; start windows normally and start up recovery. When I push the first option, there is a quick blue screen, what disapears too fast to read the tekst. Finally the screen failure recovery comes back. in the other option there is a screen Options for system recovery who's said; Can not start the installated program. Click on Ok to shut down the computer.
How do I fix this problem?

    Hi hans_3,
Maybe something has muddled up the Windows registry or some important system files and so you cant start Windows anymore or start the system repair option.
I think in this case its necessary to reinstall Windows. Therefore you can take the Toshiba recovery disk that brings your computer back o factor settings where all drivers and tools are already installed but it wipes the whole HDD.
It takes only few minutes and needs some clicks.
    Good luck! :)

  • Toshiba Satellite L750 won't start at all.

Hi, I own a Toshiba satellite l750 (part number PSK2YA-04K010) and rather unexpectedly, it's just refusing to start. The lights at the front are on for the power adaptor, so it's not the power supply, and the power light flashes for maybe three seconds when I press the on button, but the laptop does not even start (no fan noise or anything". The power light seems to flash periodically at random as well. I've had the laptop since May at last year, and in December I had to get the hard drive replaced. I did get a blue screen with the message "Kernel page error" maybe a week ago, but other than that, no warning signs. If any one could help, it would be great. Thanks.

Turn off your laptop, unplug all wires, remove the battery, and hold the power button for thirty seconds. Afterwards, reattach the battery and connections.
If it still won't start, remove the battery and start with just the AC power. Next try without the AC power and just the battery. Also, check that the RAM is inserted securely. Instructions can be found in your user's guide if you need.
If that doesn't help at all, contact support in your region to seek service.
