Re: Scam Call from Microsoft Windows - or was it?

In reference to the comment made about the PC World calls.  There are real calls conducted by PC World to assist their Knowhow customers.  It is a sad world where we chalk all help from our solution providers up to being some sort of a scam.
There are legitimate support calls being done by the Knowhow team to assist customers in using the services they purchased.
If for whatever reason you question the validity of these calls you can always call the phone number provided in the email sent to you by [email protected] and then at least you know you speaking the genuine Knowhow support.

Well to be honest, I have found the Knowhow team to be a bunch of scammers as well. My friend took a laptop that wouldn't charge to them and they said it was a faulty solder point on the motherboard and quoted £200 to replace the motherboard. In fact it was a broken power supply, £8 from Amazon. Another time they said a motherboard had failed and that's why it wouldn't boot. It was actually a duff battery, once I removed it booted fine. Then bought a new battery.

  • Phone call saying they were from Microsoft Windows

I received a phone call today from a man that said he was from Microsoft Windows, & that Microsoft had been receiving notices for several weeks that " something" was wrong with my computer.  Offline he had me do a system check, then said my computer
was corrupted, then put on his floor supervisor who had me get online and do some more system checks and told me that I was corrupted and it would cost $150-$350 to fix. I hung up thinking this might be a scam.  My question is do you have someone who
makes these type phone calls, or was it a scam? If it is corrupted how do I fix it.
    Thanks for your help

Hi, I also had a phone call from someone who claimed they were from the microsoft team and were having warnings suggesting that my computer had serious issues.  When I asked which computer they said the one with windows 7.  After a long phone call
and they even went onto my computer remotely without asking for my permission showed me severial files which they classed as hackers trying to get into my information which can be corrected at a cost of £89.  When I told them I was not interested as the
computer was only a cheap note book for the kids to use, I was put onto someone else for them to convince me that now all computers used in the home are now effected.   It came to an end with me hanging up on them.  If anybody out there is interested
into investigating this, the company who is doing this is: BC Repair and Services, and claim to be microsoft authorised services.  Tel number:020390105670.
    Hope this can help,

  • Health rollup to computer object from Microsoft.Windows.ApplicationComponent

    Hi All.
Trying to author a Management Pack in Authoring Console 2007 R2. And can't get rollup to work as I want.
    Here's the long story.
    I've created:
    A discovery MP witch holds:
    - an abstract class inherited from Microsoft.Windows.Computer, named: "AppX.Cmp.Role"
    - a (seed?) class inherited from the above, named: "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server"
    - a class inherited from "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server" named "App.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator"
    - a class inherited from "Microsoft.Windows.ApplicationComponent" named: "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator.Loginstance"
    - a class of type "Microsoft.SystemCenter.InstanceGroup" named: "AppX.Group"
    - a relationship (system.hosting) where source class is "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator" and target class is "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator.Loginstance"
    - a registrydiscovery to discover "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server" targeted at "Windows.Operating.System"
    - a scriptdiscovery to discover "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator" targeted at "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server"
    - a scriptdiscovery to discover "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator.Loginstance" targeted at "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator"
    - a groupdiscovery ("Microsoft.SystemCenter.GroupPopulator") target: "AppX.Group" (Microsoft.Windows.Computer)
    - a dependencymonitor targeted at "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator" and monitor dependency set to "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator.Loginstance", HealthRollup set to "worst state".
A monitoring MP (depending on the discovery MP) witch holds:
    - a processmonitor targeted to "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator" and "replicator.exe"
    - a logfilemonitor targeted to "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator.Loginstance"
    - a stateview targeted to "AppX.Group"
When I kill the "replicator.exe" process the object goes to unhealthy all the way up to "Windows.Computer". But when the logfilemonitor triggers and turns into "unhealthy state" the object in the above view turns RED but not the
"Windows.Computer" object (looking at the default view "Windows Computers").
Is it possible to get the "Windows.Computer" object to reflect the "AppX.Cmp.Role.Server.Replicator.Loginstance" state?
    How?

Sorry about that - its been a long weekend.
    I was quoting from the following;
    "Use the Microsoft.Windows.LocalApplication as
a base class when your class type represents a local application that shares the resources of the hosting Windows computer with other applications. Unlike theMicrosoft.Windows.ComputerRole class,
    the Microsoft.Windows.LocalApplication class
type does not automatically roll its health up to the hosting computer."
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee533867.aspx
Would you be able to upload the results if you run the Visio MP diagram generator and possibly the health explorer views and this will help me see how it hangs togther?

  • The event logging service encountered an error while processing an incoming event published from Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing.

Last night, some of our systems installed updates released on 11/13/2014.
    KB3021674
    KB2901983
    KB3023266
    KB3014029
    KB3022777
    KB3020388
    KB890830
Today, all of the servers running Windows Server 2008 R2 started logging the following error in the Security log over and over:
    Log Name:      Security
    Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Eventlog
    Date:          1/15/2015 11:12:39 AM
    Event ID:      1108
    Task Category: Event processing
    Level:         Error
    Keywords:      Audit Success
    User:          N/A
    Description:
The event logging service encountered an error while processing an incoming event published from Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing.
Servers running Windows Server 2008 that also installed the updates are not experiencing the problem.  It looks like one of the updates may have introduced this problem with Server 2008 R2.

...Did you for sure confirm that:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/MS15-001
    is the cause?
I did.  I had a VM that was not experiencing the problem.  I took a snapshot and tested the patches one by one.  Installing only KB3023266 immediately caused the issue to occur (after reboot).  A similar process was used to confirm that
    installing KB2675611 resolved the problem.
Note that I found the installation of KB2675611 is usually quick, but it took several hours hours to install on some of our systems.  We had installed this patch a few months ago on a couple of servers and it was always quick to install.  But,
it seems like installing it on a symptomatic system can cause it to take a long time.

  • RFC call from a Windows Service

    Hi All,
I have created a simple windows service which is making an RFC call to R/3 system. This is not working. Whereas the same piece of code written in a windows application projects(exe) works properly. Does anyone had similer issues working with Windows services ? Is it a known issue of RFC calls from windows service ???
    Thanks & Regards
    Ganesh Datta

    Hi Juergen,
After I put the debug statements I figured out that connection to R/3 system is unsuccessful.
I am using the SAP .Net Connector 2.0. I wrote a windows service which is manually started. Withing my service I am using Single sign on to connect .This is what was causing the problem. If I disable Single sign on and supply userID and password then connection is successful and also subsequent RFC calls.
I guess within windows service Single sign on does not work.
    Thanks for your reply
    Best Regards

  • UNIX calls from a Windows platform thru JSP

We have a Tomcat Webserver that runs off a Win2000 server. The primary interface is a JSP and the it fetches data out of an Oracle DB (hosted on Unix) and displays the same. Is there any way that I could also make calls to the Unix server to show some stats ... can JSP do that and if so how ?
    TIA for the pointers
    -Ben

The java is running on the windows 2000 machine.
You can't make any direct system calls to the unix operating system from there.
What sort of stats would you want to see?
The only way I could see it working is
1 - Java process on Win2000 calls another process on the Unix server (via RMI) to send it back the information that it wants.
Its something I would put in a bean/servlet rather than a JSP.

  • Scam call from 070 number

Recieved a call today from this number 07054501367 to my BT landline. The person using a prerecorded message said "hello can you hear me, can you hear me" the line disconnected. Im guessing they expected me to return the call which I didn't thankfully. Googling the number using prefixes of 070 shows the number carries a premium rate call charge from both mobiles and landlines. Please be aware

Welcome to the forum. 070 numbers are bad news, from scammers to rip-off phones at hospital bedsides. It's a mystery why the code was allowed as a premium number when it can so easily mistaken for a regular mobile number.

Yes, it indeed boggles the mind.  I'm of course referring to the fact that your post concerns Verizon Wireless products and services.  This forum is dedicated exclusively to Verizon Communications services.   As you probably know, Verizon Wireless and Verizon Communications operate as separate companies.
If you need help for a Verizon wireless product or service, it's best to direct questions to the Verizon Wireless forums.  You can reach them by clicking on "Wireless" (either here or at the top of the page).
Good luck and I sincerely hope you get your issue resolved.

  • Received call from someone who said they were from Windows and that my pc is infected number 888-887-3134

I need to know if this is a legitimate call as he asked me to pull the event viewer and it did show warnings and errors, he asked me to delete but they would not delete and then we was asking me to type a url to ping, in the run box, the pc, that's
where I stopped and asked for a return call number so that I could verify the authenticity of the call.

    Its
a scam.  A well known and long running one.  Microsoft will never ask for personal details (they already have them) and will never cold call you or send out anti virus messages.
    Microsoft
does not do that nor do they have partners who do that

  • Scam call

    Hello
I just received a scam call from
hlp.urgent.alm.10, it came up as NOTIFICATION(tm) URGENT ...
It was an automated message telling me that my computer was infected (or something like that). It told me to log into [invalid URL]
I received the call at 9:43am, PST.
    This is just an FYI

Robocallers like that are breaking the law.  I used to constantly get calls from this phone number in Washington State that was being run by people who only speak Spanish.  It's all a scam and it's crazy.  There has also been a charity organization that I believe would stop at nothing to continue calling me and ignores my requests to be put on their "do not call" list.  It's harrassment. they don't care, and they get away with it.
Seriously, try nomorobo.com.  It's not failproof but ever since I added it to my phone service, it has made a huge difference and things have calmed down a lot.  Even if some phone numbers from these scammers fall through the cracks, it's very easy to report them to nomorobo and I have found that I will stop receiving calls like that quickly.  I even reported this caller from a blocked private line and that stopped as well.  We all deserve peace of mind.

  • Spoof Call from Verizon51

I got a call from Verizon51 saying I was entitled to a $51 credit on my Verizon Wireless Account - just login and fill in the details to get a $51 credit on my bill.
I received the call from an 801 area code number. When I checked my call history to confirm the number it wasn't there. Only (removed)
Sounds like a spoof scam, but what happened to the number??  Weird.@@
Phone number removed as required by the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service

I had the exact same problem - calls on my online number showing up as +00000. No matter how many times I clicked "answer" I just couldn't answer the call - couldn't clear it from the "recent" list either.
A chat with Skype support confirmed incoming calls on my online number and guided me to upgrade to the latest version of Skype - which currently is 5.8.0.154.
+00000 is now gone from my "recent" list (without any hardcore fixes - just a simple upgrade). However I haven't been able to test if the person who was trying to call me is now able to do so since I don't know who the caller was.
If any of you know who was calling you it would be great if you could test with Skype version 5.8.0.154 or newer.

  • Silent Sales calls and International scam calls

I am registered with TPS. I still get calls from call centres and numerous international calls from "microsoft" etc. The call centre calls seem to be almost all from PPI Claims Companys but most wont respond when asked for details. International calls are almost all scams attempting to obtain bank details and money from unsuspecting persons. I can handle all of these calls but it is the nuisance of receiving these calls almost daily. If I complain to TPS my full name, address and telephone number are supplied to whoever I am complaining about. This is the last thing I want these people to know.
How can I stop these calls ?. BT want a monthly subscription and state that International calls cannot be blocked. Can anyone advise on how to stop all these unwanted calls ?. I feel like disposing of my landline phone and going all mobile.

Firstly, you are not alone. Many of us have these problems.
If you subscribe to BT caller display, then " international" calls and "number unavailable" calls are displayed on the screen, (if you are quick enough to read it).
I have my cordless phone set so that it does not  connect on picking the phone up from it's base.
You can then decide whether to answer. They can leave a message if it's important. They soon decide that it's not worth the effort ringing your number, and the frequency of calls reduces.
(If you do answer the calls they know that you are there and will continue to call.)
Perhaps it's more to add to your phone bill, but it's worth it to reduce the aggravation.
