Re: security flaw/patch: I have an iPhone 5 w/ iOS 6.1.4, iTunes 10.7.0.21...
...because yes, I still don't want to upgrade to iOS7 because yes, it and iTunes 11 really are that bad. Is there a way for me to get the 6.1.6 patch for my iPhone 5 without fully crossing over to the dark side? iTunes 11 is sooooo bad...
Hi Lawrence
well 1st of all, i'm VERY glad iTunes11 works for you, that's great ! but it doesn't for me so....i'll pass
now, how large a library ? at present roughly 2.7TB/thousands of albums, all in lossless ( + a few thousands of LP's i still have to digitise as i have the time... )
i'm still running iTunes 10.7 which is PERFECT for the way i want to use my library :
1 - i select Artist & it gives 1250 artists, each w/ a stack of albums, iTunes11 DOESN'T : it displays each album one after the other, ENDLESS & boringly.........
in the pic below, look under Zappa & Buckethead for example to see how many albums each have, then consider i have 190 Mozart albums, 75 Beethoven & the list goes on & on & on across all genres.....
2 - it has a choice of background colour ! i select dark & it saves my eyes the discomfort of garishly coloured album covers against a searing white background...
3 - selectable album thumbnail/covers size - one of the reasons why i bought a 2013 27'' iMac to replace my old 2009 27'' iMac : plenty of screen real estate - no need/reason for tiny anything, my album thumbnails being set at roughly 1.5'' X 1.5''....
& sorry to contradict you but Apple made this thread relevant to me ! simply because to get the security patch you NEED iTunes11
could it be a way of ''gently'' forcing people to drop 10.7 ? getting Mavericks ?
just to show you how important it is to me to be able to use my music library the way i like, i'm still running M.Lion because although Mavericks CAN run iTunes 10.7, doing so breaks the automatic AppStore software update process
for the time being, that's still a no no but i'm waiting for an iTunes replacement w/ all the features i love ( it's in the works.. ) then i can upgrade GLADLY to Mavericks ( i like it, a LOT.. ) & let iTunes11 sit quietly in the applications folder, using it only to sync my 3GS or not use it at all if my phone dies on me
you see, since i use my 3GS in a very basic way ( phone, sms, camera, iMessage, GPS, certainly not for mobile banking.. ) what are the chances i ''update'' to 11 because of a security patch & ruin the imense pleasure i derive from using my music several hours a day, most everyday ?
anyway, thanks for pitching in & sorry if this was longer than you'd like ;-)
cheers

I have an iPhone 5 running IOS 6.1.4 and I don't want to update to IOS 7 because I don't like it. Can I download the security fix 6.1.6 or am I now going to have to go with 7.0.6 for this phone?
This was my question exactly. Thanks for getting to the answer even though it's not what I wanted to hear. When I tried calling Apple earlier today to get an answer, I was unceremoniously disconnected twice while on hold for several minutes.

I have an iPhone 4 with iOS 5.1. What is the best way to update my phone to the latest iOS platform?
you can update over the air with strong wireless signal, or by connecting to a computer running iTunes. Either works well. If you do the update over the air, be sure and attach your iPhone to a wall outlet so you have a solid power supply and don't risk the battery dying during the update.
The iTunes approach installs a much larger file because of the connection, but if you have not updated since 5.1 that might be a better approach...replace the entire operating system instead of patching.
Either way, backup the iPhone yourself just for your own protection in the off-chance something should go wrong...a little paranoia while updating is a good thing -

I have an iphone 5 with ios 6.1.4. I just tried to sync my phone to my itunes acct to load new music onto my phone and it gave me a message saying that it was unable to sync b/c "the sync session failed to start". It let me download all pictures, but would not let me do anything else and just kept repeating the same message. Why is this happening and how do I fix it?
You need to subscribe to iTunes Match to store your music on iCloud:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/
To transfer iTunes Store purchases made on your phone to your computer, connect your phone then choose "Transfer purchases..." from the File menu in iTunes.
Photostream transfers photos taken on your iOS devices to other devices and your computer. For troubleshooting Photostream see: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3989 -
I have an iphone 4s with ios 6. I am trying to setup a new exchange email account. I need the back slash but it does not show up on the keyboard. I know it is supposed to be on the +key (and is for other apps) but for some reason it is not available when setting up an email account. Is this on purpose or am I doing something wrong?
I can tell you that with Sprint their coverage area isn't as good as Verizon or AT&T.
Are you sending these imessage while on wifi or cellular data? Also your husband would need to be in a good coverage area.
Usually when imessage is unavailable it will send it as a text. Does your husband receive your imessage as a text? -
I have a iphone 4s with ios 8.3 and I used to be able to sync only a week or two of emails from outlook email. Now it won't let me do that and it syncs all my inbox. How can I change it back to sync less. I can't find the right place.
I understand, as that was the place I would change it before 8.3 but now that option of Mail Days to Sync is not available? Any idea why that would be?

I have an iPhone 6 with IOS 8.1.3. When I go to the landscape view in Safari, the bookmark page appears and takes up one half of the screen. How can I get rid of the bookmark page so I can use the whole screen to what I am browsing?
OOPS! Too quick on the trigger to ask that question without trying anything. Sorry. Solved it by touching the bookmark icon.

We have 4 Iphones and one Apple id (used for ITunes). Since upgrading to IOS 6 on my phone, I now receive ALL the text messages destined to the others! What should I do to get back to "normal", without opting out of Imessages or FaceTime?
I'm afraid I may abuse of your generosity here, but I do have another question (that's the reason for the mistaken category of the post you answered). My daughter just arrived in her International Student residence in Europe yesterday, where internet's only available by Ethernet. She wishes to reverse-tether, from her PowerBook to her Iphone (because of the cost of using Internet on her phone over there). I found some instructions about Internet Sharing, in System Prefs, etc. "From: Ethernet, To: Airport" Enable Internet Sharing, and all...She did everything, by the book (or so, she thinks) but nothing shows on her Iphone Wi-Fi Settings when she tries to connect... I also read that it could be done with a Bluetooth PAN, but I got lost, as I tried to follow the instructions here at home, after pairing computer and Phone, with a "rude" message appearing on my phone telling me to "forget that device". Can you help?

I have an iPhone 4 with IOS 4.2.6. I recently received an iPad with IOS5.1.1. I want to update my IOS on my phone but the computer I use is no longer hooked up to the Internet. What do I need to do? Also, does my iTunes need to be updated? It is whatever was available last July. Thank you for your time and courtesy!
To update your phone requires using the latest version of iTunes, on your computer, as well as Internet access. The update to iOS 5.0 or higher is an erase/restore deal, so you not only have to make sure all of the content, currently on your phone, is on your computer and accessible, you need to update iTunes first, have Internet access, then update your phone. There is no way around this fact. You could go to an Apple store or use another computer, but you run the risk of losing all of your data it you do that.

I have an iPhone 5s on a windows 8 platform. iTunes is 11.1.4.62, iTunes doesn't recognize my iPhone and I am unable to sync. After the last iTunes update my phone wasn't recongnized and the phone asks if I want to trust the computer everytime I connect it. Other programs can access the photos and recognize the iPhone 5 but not iTunes.
Try holding down CTRL as you launch iTunes to see if it will repair the drivers.
Or try Cerbu's post here.
Or see TS1538: iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows, in particular section 5, forcing a driver update.

I have an iPhone 4 using iOS 7.1.2. On my home screen at the email icon in red it shows I have 11,193 emails to be read. I have no mail in Inbox, Drafts, Sent, or Trash. Where did this come from and how do I get rid of it. The number is printed in read on top of the blue and white emaiI icon. I contacted my cable company and through their website I can check my email. In doing this it showed I had 25 unread emails. Also, my iPad 2 is receiving emails fine. So the problem is with the iPhone 4. What can I do to get rid of the number and make my mail operational?
Hello Kizzyk,
I would start with taking a look at the settings to make sure that you are able to send and receive messages. If everything looks good then the next step would be to remove the accounts and add them back in. Take a look at the article below for more information and details on how to troubleshoot your issue further.
