Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window.
Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. You should see your hard drive in the left hand column along with your other drives. Click on the drive and select the Erase tab. Set the format value to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Erase button. After that has finished select the Partition tab. Type in a Name for your hard drive and select how many partitions you want from the Volume Scheme. The usual setting is one partition. Click on the Options button after you've selected a partition to make sure it's set for GUID. Then click the Apply button and after the Partitioning is done quit Disk Utility.
You can now follow the instructions on the install screen

i tried to encrypt using file vault but it froze slowing my macbook pro, how can i get things moving or stop the encryption

Back up all data before proceeding. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Disk Utility.
In the Disk Utility window, select the icon of the startup volume from the list on the left. It will be nested below another disk icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar. When prompted, enter the login password of a user authorized to unlock the volume, or the alternate decryption key that was generated when you activated FileVault.
Then, from the menu bar, select
              File ▹ Turn Off Encryption
    Enter the password again.
You can then restart as usual, if the system is working. Decryption will be completed in the background. It may take several hours, and during that time performance will be reduced.
If you can't turn off encryption in Disk Utility because the menu item is grayed out, you'll have to erase the volume and then restore the data from a backup. Select the Erase tab, and then select
              Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    from the Format menu.
You can then quit to be returned to the main Recovery screen. Follow these instructions if you back up with Time Machine. If you use other backup software, follow its developer's instructions.
Don't erase the volume unless you have at least two complete, independent backups. One is not enough to be safe.

Shoul there be an access tab on my iTunes

You don't view your calendar, on your Mac, that way. You sync your calendar to your Mac using iCloud, or iTunes. Read here:

The licence terms for OS X Lion are exactly the same as for any other App Store application. An individual may download and install on as many Macs as they own.

  • Do I need startup discs to upgrade hardware on MacBook Pro or can I restore the hard drive from from a Time Machine backup?

do I need startup discs to upgrade hardware on MacBook Pro or can I restore the hard drive from from a Time Machine backup?

Ok, well go and grab a small 2.5" hard drive enclosure so you can put the new drive in & temporarily use it like an external hard drive.
Download Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper and make a bootable clone of your current HDD on the new HDD.
Once that's done you can test the clone by booting from it. To do this hold Optioni while booting to select the external (new) drive. If everything looks ok, you can go ahead and swap over the HDD's.
    So much easier.

  • Thought I bought a new macbook pro - How can I be sure it is new?

I purchased a macbook pro (MA611LL-A) from a person who tells me he is an authorized reseller. I purchased my imac 20" from him and it came via Amazon about a year ago. So, I thought I would get a new macbook pro 17" 2.33ghz from him as well.
I was surprised when I opened the box to find that it was repackaged and all of the seals were broken and retaped. There was a small dent in the lid, the software was opened and not wrapped in plastic. The corners of the lid do not close flush as if someone attempted to open it without releasing the latch properly. There are some other minor details as well. But the bottom line is that it is not new.
When I booted it up the welcome stuff appears, but that can be reset. What I need to know is, if there is a way to tell by hardware, software or other information or process if this is a macbook pro that was previously owned and or used and maybe the extent of the use, such as amount of hours, dates, etc...
Any help is appreciated. I hate being ripped off!
    Thanks

An authorized reseller would not be selling computers from Amazon AFAIK.

All those things you mentioned are how you can know a computer is new. If it doesn't have all the little stickers intact and stuff is opened then it's not new, but you know that already.

I don't think there is any way to know for sure how much use it's gotten, but you could maybe check the battery cycle count for some idea. In any case, it's not new so you should go ahead and consider what options you have available, like returning the machine for a refund, or contacting your credit card company, etc.

  • I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro, How can I install Windows 7 without an Optical Drive?

For clarity:  I have a mid 2010, Macbook Pro.  I recently decided to upgrade to a Crucial SSD drive, double the ram (8 gigs), and remove the optical drive in favor of using my old drive as a back up.  I am also currently running Yosemite.
I want to install Windows 7 onto my SSD, using bootcamp.  Unfortunately I no longer have an optical drive installed, which makes things difficult as Bootcamp does not even give me the option to create a bootable USB.
Now, this is where things get kinda fuzzy:
MId 2010 macbooks use EFI, and are quite capable of booting from USB.  How do I know?  Because I booted from a USB drive in order to do a fresh install of Yosemite on my SSD.
I have read mutliple forums and threads with claims that folks have had no problems doing this on 2008 Macbook Pros running Snow Leopard.  However, what seemed to be required was some clever .plist modding.  I have used both text wrangler, and x-code to do this, unfortunately upon booting of bootcamp, bootcamp instantly crashes.  Naturally, I can restore bootcamp because I made backups of the .plist file.
It would seem that modffying the .plist file assumes that the option to create a bootable USB device is grayed out.  In my case, it is non existent.
I have also read that folks have had success using rEFIt, however rEFIt has been forked to rEFIned, and the developer of rEFIned made mention on his site that Yosemite handles booting differently than previous versions of OSX.
WIth that, I was hoping that some kind person could explain to me whats going on, what I am missing, and what I can do to make this happen just shy of tearing down my MBP and reisntalling the Optical Drive and dusting off my Win 7 disc.
Also, my Model Number/Bootrom is MBP 6,2.
    Thanks in advance!

Thank you for your reply, and the information.  This is what I came up with:
I added the strings as instructed, however when I went to sign the script in terminal, I was told:
/Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app: replacing existing signature
/Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app: code object is not signed at all
    In subcomponent: /Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app/Contents/info.plist
Also, here are screen captures of the lines that I added.  Mine are the top string entries:
Thank you for your help, thus far!

  • I am new to Apple (Retina MacBook Pro), how can I maximize my experience?

Hello, I recently joined the Apple world by purchasing a 13" Retina MacBook Pro. So far, I couldn't be happier. I changed platforms from Google because the devices I have don't allow for local content playback and apps are buggy and slow to respond. (I also hate Windows 8 with a passion). I want to get the most out of my Mac and the Apple ecosystem so I would like to get some feedback from other users about how best to accomplish the following:
Seamless media syncing and playback on TV, phone, and computer
Planning to get an iPhone 6 and upgrade to Yosemite so personal data, photos, music, and video is accounted for
I have used Google Chromecast and have Google Play's music client, but uploading content to that environment is another step
I already have a modem w/ wireless and router built in courtesy of my internet provider, what would be the benefit, if any, to getting an AirPort Express, Extreme, etc?Would like the ability to back up my data - external hard drive is adequate, but wireless backup is tempting
I do writing and programming and I am already getting familiar with iBooks, iUniversity, and XCode - any other suggestions?
I am happy to be a part of the Apple world! Now I want to see what it can do! The bottom line is I want seamless access to all of my content across the devices I have.

I have a MacBook.  I purchased things apps like Pages, Numbers. etc in the App store.  Im' just wondering how to put them on the new MacBook Pro without having to purchase them again.  Will the Migration Assistant do this?

  • I have a new Macbook Pro, how can I access my old backups from previous Macbook??

Hey, I reccently got a new Macbook Pro, because my Macbook died. How can I get access to my previous backups to get uni work and stuff from it? There is almost 2 years work of stuff on there that I need access to.
Is it also because I am now on Lion?
    cheers

Try the advice on this thread.
The problem is that you're using a different Mac.  The best approach would have been to use Setup Assistant to suck your data from the old backup into your new Mac.  Since you didn't do that, your manual approach may be the best option.

Am in need of a copy of DVDdrive for a macbook pro OS. how can i get a copy, please any one to help

If you are referring to the original system reinstall discs that shipped with every Mac before Lion came out you'll need to contact Apple with the serial # of your Mac and order a replacement set of them.
Or look on one of the Auction websites or places like iFixit.com for a replacement set.
If your Mac came new with any of the Download Only versions of OS X, Lion, Mt Lion or Mavericks you don't need any discs to reinstall OS X. You use the Online Internet Recovery system or the built in Recovery HD partition inb the internal hard drive.
For the built in Recovery HD hold down the Command + r keys at startup. For the Online system hold down the Command + Option/Alt + r keys and keep them held down until you see a globe on the screen.

  • Lost macbook pro, how can i find it ?? help !!!

my macbook pro is lost , how can i find it. i didnt turn on my findmyiphone on icloud !

Do you have a Pro Support actived and a Location Service?
Do you have a "Find My Mac" in iCloud?
If you don't have any of this, will be hard to find your Mac!
Check in your iCloud if your Mac was localized. If show like "offline", click in "Lost Mode". A Access Code is necessary to unlock your device posteriorly. If you not have one, a new 4 number code is necessary. See instructions in iCloud help. If anybody turn-on your Mac, it enter in "locked mode" and nobody can use it and you can find it!
Alternatively, you can back to airport or call and check in "Lost & Found" department if anybody find your computer!
    Good luck!!!

  • Airport Extreme runs slow on iMac desktop but twice as fast on MacBook Pro - how can I improve upload speed on iMac?

I have already done a complete clean of the iMac, to no avail. Have read the recommendations for adjusting chaneels, etc and I've done that too. The iMac has clear line of sight and is 20 feet away distance from Airport Extreme. My MacBook Pro runs very fast at 68 download speed off this same airport unit even when on a different floor, near phones and typical interference, etc. the iMac runs only at about 20 at best. Any ideas for how to improve this? I would need specific step-by-steps since I am clearly not an expert.

The Airport Extreme model number is A1301. I am unsure how to locate the Radio Mode setting.... can you advise?
Ok you have a 3rd generation 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) that is capable of providing a simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi networks. By default, the Radio Mode is set to "Automatic." Which means that it will support 802.11b/g/n wireless clients on the 2.4 GHz band and 802.11a/n clients on the 5 GHz band.
Your wife's iMac, on the other hand, only supports wireless as a 802.11b/g client. That means it is only capable of connecting with a maximum bandwidth (speed) of 54 Mbps.
Any time a non-802.11n client connects to a 802.11n network, it basically "slows down" that network for other 802.11n clients like your MacBook Pro. The only option I see at this time to improve bandwidth for both your wife's and your Macs is to consider getting a wireless 802.11n USB adapter for the iMac. A number of vendors sell these. One of them is Other World Computing (OWC). They are inexpensive and should dramatically improve the bandwidth performance for her iMac.

  • Macbook pro how can i increase speed

I have a 2011 macbook pro and it is running really slow. What can I do to speed increase the speed?

You may have to check into the causes of slow computers and narrow
the focus down to how to determine what they are, and initiate a cure.
    •Tech Guides - {malware, adware, & performance} - The Safe Mac:
    http://www.thesafemac.com/tech-guides/
There are certain symptoms that may indicate a presence of adware or
some other condition, to include too full a hard disk drive; when there is
inadequate free working space for temporary swap files or virtual memory
in the hard disk drive, that can slow the computer. In absence of adequate
RAM (memory, in-chip) the computer also can work slower than ideal.
So a too-full hard disk drive (or SSD, if so equipped) along with insufficient
chip RAM installed, can equal a slower computer than expected. Also, if
you have incompatible software installed, antivirus application or other that
runs in the background and uses processor cycles (makes busy-work) it may
be the cause of overall slower performance. Or no performance at all. A dog.
You could look into system logs, crash files, reports and other items as the
computer records most of these in the Console Utility, and some of them
are quite helpful when they actually spell-out a specific cause. Most of the
time, for many users, the Console and command-line are rather foreign.
Usually if there is an upgrade avenue open to you as the user and primary
account on the computer, you should learn about the device and what is
available (if anything) to change situation and improve the performance.
Troubleshooting issues to find if the problem is based in hardware, or in
software, can be time-consuming. Then, there are diagnostic tests and
professional authorized trained methods that could help resolve big kinds
of trouble. Or if you choose to have an expert upgrade the hard drive, etc.
General housekeeping, to remove old user-created content, make backups
of items you may not need or use but do not want to Trash just yet, off of
the computer and into an externally enclosed hard disk drive. Also set up
a system whereby you have automatic backups in addition to Time Machine
backups, so you could restore your computer from these backups if it should
fail. If the computer is getting on in years or in hours of use, it may be time to
consider a new replacement hard disk drive, of larger capacity & perhaps one
of faster rotational speed. If it currently has a 5400-RPM HDD, get a 7200
with a larger cache or buffer. Hardware upgrades can help if you mistakenly
did a system upgrade, as the effects can be slower than expected afterward.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • My scan disk isnt formatted for my macbook pro, how can i open it?

Does anyone know how to open a windows formatted flash drive on macbook pro? Nothing I tried worked! It contains an important conference I
attended. I am new to Mac & in need of skills Thank you in advance...

Take the drive to a PC, it likely will work just fine.
Copy the data to the PC, then right click and format the flash drive exFAT in Windows
(if XP exFAT is a free install from Microsoft)
Then place the data back on and try again on the Mac.
