Re: 'Service Battery'? on MBP

Same here. I've just noticed the "Service Battery" warning, however, I've noticed a decrease in battery life since last year and it seemed not to go up to 100% even though it's fully charged. I use it sometimes without the adapter and battery cycle is below 1000.
Are there any updates regarding this issue?

You don't say what variant of the MacBook Pro you have nor its Mac OSX version, but you can post some hard data numbers that might help us diagnose the problem:
Make sure "Finder" appears in at the left end of your menu bar. The hold the SHIFT and COMMAND keys while you type teh letter u. IThat opens your Utility folder. In it find and launch either System Profiler or System Information, whichever is present (varies with the OSX version).
When the Profiler/Information utility launches, find and click "Power" in the left-hand "Contents" pave to get this window:
Note I have highlighted some of teh line isn yellow. From you System report, copy and paste those same line into a response to my post. Sometimes the numbers displayed will reveal volumes about a power problem.

  • Service Battery Problem: MBP 13-inch Early 2011

Until last week my Macbook's Battery was giving around 5 and half hours on full charge.
Suddenly The Service Battery warning started to apper. and It started taking around 3 and half hours to fully charge without using it. And even 100% battery now gives less than 3 hours for use.
My battery has 553 Cycles; and Health goes up and down from 63% to 70%.
    Its been 21 months I have been using it!;
Please suggest me; Is there any way I can solve the problem.

The best solution is to replace the battery.  The degradation of battery life is a good indicator that the ultimate demise of the battery is near.  That is what service battery' means.  Yews, you have not had the 1000 cycles that is advertised, but some batteries exceed it and others do not.  Yours is in the latter category.
    Ciao.

  • Do I have to backup my MBP when I go check my computer about 'Service Battery'?

So recently I noticed that when I click my battery information it shows 'Service Battery'...I did my research and found that it's best to make an appointment at the Apple store. Now I was going to make an appointment right away but I am worried if I am going to lose everything on my computer since I have never done any backups on it. (I know, not a smart thing to do) So my question is if I should wait to buy a hard drive and then make an appointment or would everything still be on my computer after they are done seeing what the problem is?
A few more questions being how much does getting my computer checked by them cost? How much would a new battery cost if my computer is not covered anymore? Last being what is a great and not expensive hard drive for my 2012 MBP?
    Thank you.
(ALSO I dont really know if this is important but recently my original charger broke and I purchased a $20 one online, would that have anything to do with the whole 'service battery' problem??)

    >> How much would a new battery cost if my computer is not covered anymore?
US $129 or $199 depending if a Retina model.

If you purchased AppleCare, it's possible that both battery & original charger would be covered.

  • MBP has "Service Battery" then disappears. Also screen turns black once in awhile when watching videos.

My MBP recently has the "Service Battery" notice, but disappears after I charged my laptop and hasn't returned yet. Also, my screen turns black once in awhile when I am watching videos, but cannot get it back lit so I have to restart it.
Do I really need to "service my battery?" And what do I have to do in regards to my scrren turning black?

Service Battery means replace battery as soon as possible.
Occasional black screen problem may be related to the battery condition.
You may have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.
Power related issues can be  resolved often by resetting SMC.

    Dear Apple,
I've got a Mid 2009 Macbook pro 15". Been going great. Love it. Much better user experience than my PC laptop.
However, straight after Mavericks upgrade, I've been starting receiving "Service Battery" notification. I've had a look at my Cycle count, which is 516 as it currently stands. According to the spec, this expected battery count is 1000. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • My MBP 13" Mid 2010 indicate "Service Battery", What step should i take apart from visiting apple store?

the Service Battery Message has been appearing after i upgraded to  OS x Lion from Snow Leopard. Tried reinstalling the previous OS but could not fix the problem.
Am asking what to do to solve this situation. I can follow the instructions and do the process myself instead of taking it to apple store.

But My Battery Cycle is only clocking 415. When fully charged. i can use it for some hours with power code removed BUT the moment i close the lid for it to sleep, it turns off instead. When i don't close while using battery, it sleep without and wake normally when i resume using the laptop. I can plan on buying a new battery but this model's has maximum battery cycle of up to 1000.

  • "Service Battery" Warning Showing Up on a year old MBP

Today when I got on my Macbook Pro, I clicked the battery, and noticed it said "Service Battery". This computer is 15 months old, 3 months out of the coverage. But, this battery should last more than a year. Everything was running smoothly up until now. If I take it in at an Apple Store to be fixed, how much would it be? Or should I just fix it myself?

The battery is rated to have tha ability to recharge only a certain amount of times, then it wears out and needs to be replaced.  I believe the life expectancy of a battery is about 1.5 years.

  • Service Battery Goofiness

Last evening I was using my MacBook, watching videos on Youtube and what not. I had plans that night, so I just closed the lid and got up and left. The computer usually falls asleep and when i get home I just open the lid, and everything is right where I left it. Yesterday I was gone for about four hours, I don't remember how full the battery was when I left, but when I got home, I opened the lid, and screen flashed, and the computer when to sleep. I tried turning it on and nothing happened. I plugged it into the wall and it turned on. The battery read 0%, and it said "service battery," which was weird, it only has about 151 cycles and 88% health. As it was charging it said it only had 9 minutes, and I was thinking no way is it going to charge fully in nine minutes. I charged it till it said about 19% and I took it off the wall; the battery read 94% full, and about 3.5 hours which is normal. It no longer said to service the battery. I turned it off, let it fully charge, and called it a night. This morning I got up, turned it on, the battery was full and said three and some hours of life left. I started to check my email, Facebook, Youtube, and all that stuff. Then suddenly the computer just goes to sleep again. The lid was open, and the battery was still about 95%-ish. I plugged it into the wall and turned it on, the battery read 0% full and "service battery," as I am typing this, it jumped back up to 94% and no longer says I need to service the battery. I usually, let the battery get down to halfway before I charge it, and I always take it off the charger when the battery is full. Could this be an issue with Lion maybe, or the battery. It's a new battery as of February. Any ideas?

Hi, I have lost 2% on my maximum battery charge. It now *suddenly* charges up to 98% claiming that the battery has to be serviced - again. This is already my 3rd !! battery in 3 years.

  • After upgrading to OSX 10.7.4 it says "Service Battery"

Just upgraded to 10.7.4 and my MacBook Pro (mid 2010) now says "Service Battery". I have
reset the SMC, with no results
completely discharged then recharget the battery, no results
    Repaired disk permissions, no results
Verified the disk, appears to be OK so won't repair it.
The battery status was "Good" until I updated.
Anyone with the same issue? Any suggestion on how to solve this?

  • My MacBook Pro laptop says 'service battery' and doesn't charge very well but my Mac is 5 years old. Is it worth buying a new battery or do you think I should buy a new mac?

    Hi guys,
I can only leave my MacBook Pro unplugged for an hour maximum and it never seems to fully charge. It says on the Mac to service battery - which I guess means buy a new battery.
I have had my MacBook for over 5 years now and it does get used probably every day, if not every other. If I brought a new battery would it all work normally again or is it getting old and do I need a new one?
Also, my charger seems to be playing up a bit now as well. It's seems to be temperamental when I plug it in and takes to while to light up and charge.  I've attached an image of the battery bit on my laptop as the lead seems to be fine - is this normal?
    Thanks in advance guys.

Is there any application(s) that your current Mac cannot run that only a new can?  Calculate the cost per year of your current MBP and compare that to the cost of a new battery.  Spread the battery cost over a year or two of additional operation, how do the dollar amounts compare?  If the MBP is functioning properly, I generally find it is more cost effective to keep it.
If the retina display and the SSD storage are very desirable from your perspective, then that becomes a different matter.  You are the one to make the final decision.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook Pro does not turn on, service battery

Heres the backstory. One day, my mac simply wouldnt turn on. No video, no chime. Just one indicator light turns on, then turns off a few seconds later. then turns back on. After that happened, I brought my laptop to school the next day and plugged my friends charger into my computer and it worked. I got home and used it as a desktop for a while keeping it charged and plugged in. Then I needed it for school, so I unplugged it, and it couldnt come on again, exacty like before, just the indicator light coming on and off. i brought it home and charged it to full again, and it turned on, but it only worked if it was charged. if the charger led was green, it would work but if it was orange, it wouldnt. When it did work, under the battery status read "Service Battery." So I used it as a desktop, and then it froze, i force shutdown and now, even though charged, does the indicator light thing.
tl;dr, when i press the power button, nothing happens except the indicator light turning on then off then on again. Not sure if it is problem with charger, or my "Service battery," All i know is that when i use my friends charger it works, but mine gives the problem stated above. Worked for a while when charged to 100%, now doesnt.
MBP 7,1 33 months old tried smc resets, pram resets, didnt work.
    Any help is appreciated, thanks.

OS X is telling you that the battery isn't working, so it has to be replaced. When you see "Service Battery", it means that your battery has to be replaced.
In Early 2008 and older MacBooks Pro, you can buy the battery at the Apple Online Store and replace it yourself. If you have a newer MacBook Pro, take your MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller to have the battery replaced.
It's normal that batteries fail after years because their capacity goes down with charges

  • "Service Battery" after 106 cycles, 1 year

When I got my MBP, I got an second battery, because I expected to sometimes have long periods without access to AC power. In order to wear the batteries down evenly, I decided to (under normal circumstances) use each battery for a month at a time, calibrating each at the start of its month. Each battery was marked on its bottom (the side you can't see when it's installed) in magic marker, with the one coming with the computer being 1, and the other being 2.
When the computer was a little over a year old (and, unfortunately, I did not extend Apple Care), I began to have problems with the original battery. Specifically, when I swapped it back into the computer after using #2 for a month, and I began to go through the calibration steps, when I got to the step of disconnecting the AC power, the computer only ran for a few minutes then shut off without warning. After that, the computer indicated "Service Battery".
This was a few months ago. I have just been using the second battery alone meanwhile, but would like to try to resolve this situation--hopefully, without having to buy a new battery.
This is what System Profiler says right now about this battery:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 0
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 221
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 106
    Condition: Check Battery
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 1580
    Voltage (mV): 12515
The menu bar charging indicator says (0:17), and the menu itself says "Service Battery" and "45% full".
Is there anything that either I can do myself, or that a Genius at an Apple Store could do, to save me from the cost of buying a batter to replace this one? I believe Apple feels that their batteries should last at least 300 cycles over three years. Mine only got to one-third of that.

    Condition: Check Battery
You need a new battery. Take your computer to an Apple Store. The staff will be able to check to determine if your model MacBook Pro qualifies for a free battery.

  • Help macbook pro battery 'Service Battery' ?

I got an old mac book off newegg in September it was a macbook pro late 2006 model with the duo core processor. It originally had 2 gb of ram I wanted more so I ordered some now I have 4 gb of ram.Keep in mind I ordered the correct ram for the macbook pro. I installed it,now ever since then it says Service Battery. I even tried to take out the battery for 5 minutes then put it back in the 'Service Battery' is still there when you roll over the battery. This is my 2nd battery I have had with this mac book I purchased it in October.
Here is my current battery info:
      Model Information:
      Manufacturer:          SMP
      Device name:          ASMB012
      Pack Lot Code:          0002
      PCB Lot Code:          0000

      Hardware Revision:          0500
      Cell Revision:          0200
      Charge Information:

      Fully charged:          No
      Charging:          Yes
      Full charge capacity (mAh):          2863

      Battery Installed:          Yes
      Amperage (mA):          2333
      Voltage (mV):          12085
They told me to go to the genius bar to see if it is the battery or the mac book itself.
I just am freaking out because I can not afford another mac book nor battery and I just got this battery I have now in October.

I am sad to tell you that you did not order the correct RAM for your MBP.  The maximum RAM for a Core Duo MBP is 2GB.  You indicate that your problems commenced with the installation of the excessive RAM.  This strongly suggests that there is a correlation.  I would recommend that you put back the old RAM and see if the problem goes away.  If not take it to an Apple store.  There may be residual effects from the wrong RAM that may need to be addressed.
    Ciao.
PS:  I also have a 2006 Core Duo and my response has been done on same.  I still think it is a great MBP, slower than the new ones but does the same things, plus I like the silver key board.

  • Service Battery Issue

Today after resetting the SMC in the morning and using my computer until roughly about an hour left of charge to go (roughly 30% left), I turned off my computer and left it for about 30 minutes as I commuted home in the afternoon. Came home to find that my MBP 4,1 wouldn't boot - I plugged into power, it booted and the battery told me "Service Battery" as I charged it to about 50% and reset the SMC again. I just finished off the calibration process, and here are my stats:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 4122
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 4423
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 171
    Condition: Normal
I'm thinking for a battery that has a cycle count of 171 and it's less than a year old (this MBP travels with me everywhere) that this is unacceptable. I called Apple today and the representative agreed that it is below standards (but that was prior to the calibration, I had a full charge capacity of 4300 before calibration) and that when I take it to the Apple Store tomorrow that they should look into it.
Do you think there is a good chance that they will replace my battery for me with stats that I currently have?
    Thanks!

You're lucky this is happening within a year of owning the macbook.
My MBP started giving me the service battery notice just after with about 240 cycles. Well below the 1000 the website tells you to expect.
Maybe I'll pay for a new battery, but a whole lot of threads here seem to suggest that will only make the problem worse. I'm currently still getting 3-4 hours out of a charge

  • I just bought my mac, yesterday. why is it already saying "service battery"?

    Ralph Landry1 wrote:
Of course, new should mean new...I would be more than a little annoyed if mine failed right out of the box.
But the other side of it, if they thoroughly test it and only the battery is bad, you have a machine that has actually undergone more testing than they get off the production line...as the battery failure clearly shows
One side of me hates a failed item, other side likes a fully tested and passed item.
To me it wouldn't really matter what they did to test it. I would simply want either a new unit, in a sealed box just like all MBPs come, or my money back.
I wouldn't want it taken apart, repaired, tested, nothing. That is for them to do after I have left the store with what I original bought, A New Macbook Pro that works as it is supposed to without bad parts.
I really don't understand why that is not acceptable and that I or anyone else should accept anything else.
I also don't understand why anyone would even suggest that it be repaired as it is one day old and this problem was apparent right out of the box.
If they said to me "Well we checked it out and it's just the battery and we will replace that". I'd say "fine I would like to return it on the 14 day full money back policy". Thank you and walk out of that store.
