Re: Split Text/Graphics in Illustrator

Okay. Back again after a while. So, I've used this split method using the blend tool once since I originally asked this question to do a logo. Now I'm wondering how you can make it work with more complex letterforms. Eg: R, B, A, etc
If you see below, I have an example of what I'm talking about. It's super easy to do the "I" and "S" but not so much for the "R" or similar letter forms. See also the example of the logo for a Forum I read often (FPO: http://www.underconsideration.com/fpo/) - Now in their logo, the letterforms of "F" and "P" are easy enough to create, but you'd have to draw it by hand for the "F" and do the "P" in parts as opposed to using the blend tool method ... from what I understand.
Any tricks, suggestions on getting an exact split line for the more complex letter forms? thanks in advance.

A strange coincidence.

Even stranger: When I thought I had posted an answer to the continuation of

  • How do I split a large wall graphic on Illustrator into sections for printing?

    I work in marketing and occasionally have to put together graphics on Illustrator.
    I am currently putting together a large wall graphic for an exhibition and want to find out how to split it into sections for printing. It has a total length of 5757mm but will need to be split into 6 panels (4x 980mm, 1x 841mm & 1x 996mm)
    It would be best for me to design this as one large graphic and then split it, however I'm not sure of the best way to do this.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Louise,
    There is just room enough for the whole artwork in 1:1 within the Workspace.
    You may create it as one entity, then create Artboards for each panel, but the exact way depends on a few things such as whether you are working with overlaps and whether the printer prints to the edge or has a non printing area.
    You may need two sets of the artwork with every second artboard on each so that you end up with overlapping artboards for printing/assembly.

  • HP PhotoSmart C309g Printer no longer prints Black Text, Graphics, etc

    Hi:
    We have an HP laptop.
    We have an HP PhotoSmart All-In-One C309g Wireless printer/scanner/copier.
    It has been working fine for a couple of years, until 2 days ago.
    It will no longer print anything in black (colors and Photo Black work fine).
    We have taken it apart...removed all ink cartridges, removed the cartridge caddy,
    cleaned all electrodes,  replaced the caddy, installed 5 (all) new cartridges,, etc.
    We went through the process of removing the cartridges, caddy, shutting down,
    removing the AC cord, waiting for several minutes, then doing the reverse process.
    When we turn the printer on, it does its auto-check/install, and after about 4-5 minutes
    tells us that the installation failed, the to press the OK  button.
    We went thorugh this process several times, and the installation failed every time.
    In the past, installing printer cartridges, cleaning, calibrating...executed quickly.
    The printer will not print anything that is Black, whether it me a print from Word, Notepad,
    doing a direct copy from the glass, etc....both, with the laptop On or Off, but it will not
    print anything in standard Black.
    The colors and Photo Black print fine, but the regular Black does not.
    The output from the other 4 cartridges are sharp, crisp, etc.
    Anything... text, graphics, etc.,  in standard Black does not print.
    Any ideas.
    Thank you

  • A way to undo Formatted Text & Graphics OCR from Acrobat 7?

    Over the course of a few months, my company received a large number of PDF files for a project for which the internal policy was that every file should be text searchable.  Unfortunately, we did not save the native files in any sort of convenient way, having at that time not realized that failing to do so was a very bad idea.  We ran OCR on every one of the files that we received, which total approximately 4,000.  At the time that we received the majority of these files, my company was still using Acrobat 7; we've since upgraded to version 8.
    Recently we discovered that there were discrepancies between our electronic copies and the hard copy printouts from which our electronic copies had been generated:  in the electronic copies, uppercase F had changed to P, S had changed to 8, etc.  We eventually worked out that it must have been that at some point a computer was mistakenly set to run OCR using the Formatted Text & Graphics setting, as opposed to either Searchable Image or Searchable Image (Exact).  This was absolutely not want we wanted, as for our purposes using a type of OCR that causes the original images to change essentially renders the files useless.  My questions, then, are the following:
    1)  As I asked in the title, is there any way of undoing Formatted Text & Graphics OCR that was performed in Acrobat 7?
    2)  Is there a way of identifying files that have had Formatted Tex & Graphics OCR performed on them (something stored in the metadata)?
    Rebuilding these files from scratch is going to require a gargantuan effort, so any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi,
    Bernd's been across the mountain and seen the bear; so, you can bank on what he posted.
    But, just because, I'll second his "no".
    Formatted Text and Graphics (Acrobat 7, 8) and ClearScan (Acrobat 9, X) effectively replace the image of textual characters.
    If a character is not recognized as 'something' a bit map is of the thing is left behind.
    Now, while Acrobat or other OCR engines (Abbey FineReader, AdLib, Adobe Capture, etc.) are really rather impressive no OCR engine has 100% accuracy 100% of the time. Other variables  come into play (scan lamp age/brightness, platen cleanliness, scanner mechanicals cleanliness, calibration of scanner, hard copy 'quality' (characters' darkness density, contrast between characters and background, presence of lack thereof of boxed in text, text in or adjacent to line arcs/circles, etc.).
    All of that is for semantic content that is "textual". Semantic content that is not textual (but, coincidently may contain text) provides little to no useful OCR output (e.g., graphs, drawings, etc.). Validate this by performing OCR on such a PDF then Export to a plain text file. Print this file out and compare that to the source paper or the scanned image.
    There is no metadata info that identifies the OCR mode used.
    Perhaps something buried in the bowls of PDF page description content; if so, not intrinsically easy to obtain.
    My suggestion (fwiw) - move forward with re-scan.
    A server product would help to move it along but a high speed scanner hooked to a local machine (with ample resources) and Acrobat Pro 8 or 9 get it done. With Acrobat 8 or 9 use Search Image (Exact).  In Preferences check the category Create PDF or TIFF to assure it is what you desire. Check Acrobat's scan presets to assure you have what you want vis-a-vis Compression and Filtering. Do avoid "Automatic".
    Be well...

  • Is there any way to add a text variable in Illustrator CS3?

    To keep track of our proofs, I have a text box in Illustrator with the date and time that I would like to automatically update everytime I save the file.
    This is possible in InDesign by inserting a text variable. Is there a way to do this in Illustrator?
    Thanks for any tips!

    The only I'm aware you can do this is with a plugin from Worker72a

  • COMBINED TEXT & GRAPHICS QUALITY

    I'm looking at buying a high-end colour laser like the Xerox 7750 or Ricoh 7200. I've got a few questions about colour lasers in general (see my other recent posts). Feel free to offer any comments about:
    COMBINED TEXT & GRAPHICS QUALITY
    My HP scanner has options that optimise the scanning quality for text, graphics or both. ie it appears there is no one setting that scans a mixed page at the best quality. I've noticed on reading printer manuals that some also offer different print settings for graphics and text. Do colour lasers print text in an inferior way if there are graphics on the same page; and vice versa? Or should text quality (and graphics) stay the same no matter what else is on the page? Assume the text is sent to the printer as actual text (not rasterised in the application).
    In the Ricoh 7200 manual it states: "If text & graphics are blurred, select Text Priority under Graphic Mode from the Maintenance menu and then print."
    There is no more explanation, but when I saw that I immediately thought: if I select Text Priority is text quality somehow improved at the expense of graphics quality? Do lasers have this limitation?
    Thanks in advance for any comments.

    Import the TIFF into a pdf, you can use the Text Recognition tool page by page. Personally, I prefer for a job like your to use a dedicated OCR program that lets me designate which parts of the page should be considered graphics and which are text that needs to be OCRd.

  • Copying a Text Graphic

    Hello,
    I just picked up on a Flash project at work from our previous web designer who has since left the company and I know nothing about Flash so I am going to try my best to explain my problem.
    The client has requested some information be added to one of the sections of the web page which would involve a vertical scroll bar because it can not all fit in the pre-determined area for text. It will be added under jobs. Under the legal section the text runs outside of the area and has a scroll bar effect applied to it. Can I copy the legal text graphic, delete the old jobs text graphic, place the job text in the copied legal text graphic and then name it as the like the original text graphic that I deleted and have it all work without any problems?
    This might be a little bit hard to understand so I included a picture to show you maybe what I am talking about?
    thanks
    garrett

    I am not clear on what you have in front of you, but if the text is a graphic of text, then you should be able to directly replace that graphic with a new graphic in whatever object is holding it.
    If that section only holds text, you may find it is a textarea that has a scrollbar enabled for it, wherein the text is likely defined in the actionscript code (which means you could edit the text... a graphic isn't involved).
    What I recommend is that you make a copy of the file so that an original is retained.  Use the copy to experiment with making changes.

  • Splitting text file

    I have the below clas for splitting text files, but I am getting an error. Could someone please help? Thanks
    public void splitFile(String file) {
              try {
                   BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(file));
                   final int numOutputFiles = constants.getNUM_PRINTERS();
                   int loopCounter=0;
                   Object currentOutputFile = null;
                   String sourceFile = in.readLine();
                   PrintWriter out0 = new PrintWriter(new FileOutputStream(constants.getPRINTER1_FILENAME()));
                   PrintWriter out1 = new PrintWriter(new FileOutputStream(constants.getPRINTER2_FILENAME()));
                   PrintWriter out2 = new PrintWriter(new FileOutputStream(constants.getPRINTER3_FILENAME()));
                   PrintWriter [] fileHandles = {out0, out1, out2};
                   while (sourceFile != null) {
                        loopCounter++;
                        if (loopCounter == numOutputFiles) {
                             loopCounter=1;
                        ERROR-->currentOutputFile = fileHandles[loopCounter-1].println(sourceFile); <--ERROR
                        //currentOutputFile.write(sourceFile);
                   out0.close();
                   out1.close();
                   out2.close();
              } catch (Exception ex) {
                   logger.error(EXCEPTION_MESSAGE,"Error splitting file: "+ex.getMessage());
                   ex.printStackTrace();
         }The error I get is on the line above in bold, "Type mismatch: cannot convert to void from Object" .
    Thanks!!

    also, how can I get the PrintWriter file names to be dynamic instead of declaring 3 of them like I have it now? Lets say I need 5 files now, but in the future, I may need 2 files. So the "out" variable would have the out1 and out2 only.

  • Need to cut a word in half and insert text inside, in Illustrator or InDesign

    need to cut a word in half and insert text inside, in Illustrator or InDesign, like this: http://looksgreat.tumblr.com/post/56189410707/tutorial-letra-dividida

    That's fine. Everybody has their own preferences. I find it odd that you feel the need to criticize mine. Personally, I've been a Prepress Tech for 25 years, the last 15 in a digital environment on Mac Workstations. I work with live fonts and outlined text every day. I've had way more headaches with font substitution and reflow than I've ever had with vector art. Most of the time, I leave live text as live text. But if I'm designing a Logo or art that is intended to be placed in multiple documents and probably scaled, I'm going to convert it to paths. Much less chance of the RIP screwing it up that way.
    Your answer to OPs question was spot on. So was mine. There is rarely only one right way to create something in Illustrator. If you don't care for my methods, then don't use them. But let me assure you, I don't need any schooling from you. The fact that you seem compelled to engage me on this may say something about your personality. Micro-manage much?

  • Trouble selecting and moving objects near text in Adobe Illustrator? Try this.

    It's been 4 years since I left Corel DRAW for Adobe Illustrator. One thing I could never get used to is the crazy way text has an impenetrable invisible sheet over it making it hard to select objects near or behind it.
    With Corel DRAW I was used to be able to select text by simply clicking on the visible area of the text. Selecting stuff behind the text by clicking between letters or right next to a decender was never a problem. But Illustrator is a different story.
    Tonight I finally found a way to make selecting text in Illustrator behave more like Corel DRAW.
    I wrote it up here: http://www.johnstanowski.com/blog/trouble-selecting-and-moving-objects-near-text-in-adobe- illustrator-try-this/
    Just thought I'd share!

    It's not spam, but thanks for assuming.
    I was up really late writing that blog post. Posting a link was the quickest way to share and be able to go to bed.
    Plus it's rather lengthy. I thought that would be rude to use an Adobe forum for my articles.
    If you saw my blog you will have seen there's not much going on there at all, and no calls to action to hire me. I don't have anything to gain by getting traffic.
    And, yeah, layers work for selecting, but that slows you down. Who would want to look away from their work to find and select a layer when they're trying to tweak positions of objects? Layers suck for selecting quickly.
    And there must be something wrong with me but I find using Type Object Selection by Path Only by itself hard to use. I'd really just like to click on the text itself rather than an invisible hairline you have to probe to find.
    Here's the post. I hope people who had trouble like me find it helpful.
    Do you have trouble selecting objects near Point Type in Adobe Illustrator? You’ve been there. You want to select an object. Problem is, it’s really close to piece of Point Type. All too often we try to select objects that wind up being unreachable because they lie too close to a piece of Point Type, which we wind up selecting instead. Luckily, after years of angst, I discovered a solution.
    Point Type in Adobe Illustrator is funny. There’s this invisible “shield” around it. This shield is much larger (at least it seems that way) than the text itself. It prevents you from selecting objects behind text by clicking between letter and words. This shield is particularly meddlesome with lowercase letters and decenders because we think surely we can click on that blue box (or whatever) because it seems far enough away from that Point Type. But the lowercase “g” in the Point Type’s territory.
    Okay, now that we know we’re talking about the same thing, let’s move on to the solutions.
    Step 1. Check ‘Type Object Selection by Path Only’ in Preferences
    You’ll find this option in Preferences/Type. Click it and that nasty text shield goes away. But there’s a price to pay. With this option activated, the only way you can select your text is by clicking on the text path, a super, tiny, thin baseline thingy under all the letters, but above decenders. It’s really hard to grab. To do it right you need to slowly approach the text path with your cursor. When you’re right over it, Illustrator will let you know by adding a small black square to your cursor. Now, you can click, hold and move your text. But this workflow can really slow you down and break your rhythm, maybe even more so with it turned off.
    Step 2. Add the ‘Outline Object’ Effect
    Select your Point Type and, from under the Effects Menu/Path/, select Outline Object. This effect does something really sweet to text in Illustrator: it lets your Point Type objects be treated as if their were converted to Outlines. You can still edit the text, but as far as selecting it, Illustrator now considers it outlines and shapes instead of a text object. Basically, it now considers the Path of the text to be the text itself! Now, since we’ve already checked ‘Type Object Selection by Path Only’ we can now click on the text to select it. Just the text. Not the baseline, not the wacky invisible shield surrounding it.
    And now… you can select things behind the text by clicking between words and letters. And the ONLY way to select Point Type is to click on the visible parts of the text itself! Problem solved.
    Potential Problem:
    Too much of a good thing could be a bad thing. Let’s say you have some Point Type set in a very light face and it’s pretty small or you’re zoomed way out. Selecting that text could be a problem since you have to actually click on the text itself. Actually it isn’t that hard, it may just require an extra click to grab it. If you have a set of smaller, light-faced bits of text, you can elect to just not apply the Outline Object effect to these. They’ll get their ‘shield’ back and be easier to click on. And since they’re so small, they don’t pose a problem with selecting things behind them anyway.
    Applying this technique to your old files
    Now that you’ve learned this awesome new way to work around type in Illustrator, you may be anxious to open yesterday’s project and get back to work. But you may be not be looking forward to applying the Outline Object effect to each and every piece of type. For this you can use Illustrator’s “Select Same” feature. Select one piece of text. Then from the Select Menu click on Object/Text Objects. Now ALL of your text objects will be selected, and you can apply the Outline Object effect to all of them at once!
    That’s it. If you build ads or work with a lot of type in Illustrator, you’re about to be able to work a lot faster… and happier.

  • Making MOTION text in Adobe ILLUSTRATOR

    I make my video titles in MOTION with some basic text styles (face color, outline, glow). I make my DVD labels and jacket covers with Illustrator. Obviously, I want them to be the same. I am still trying to figure out the vocab of Illustrator and have not mastered how to replicate the exact effects I made in Motion. Does anyone have a better, more APPLE friendly workflow to do vector DVD labels and jackets OR does anyone know a way to integrate MOTION text style with ILLUSTRATOR.

    The issue is resolution, screen vs print, your video is something like 1024x576 pixels, or any one of the multitude of dimensions, print requires 200/300dpi depending on the print method, inkjet/laser/offset.
    So you are creating a DVD slick, 27x18cm-ish, each face is about 13cm wide and 18cm high, at 300dpi you need to be supplying a file that is 1535pixels x 2126pixels. How to do this?
    Take your motion motion project, save it as print version, change the project settings to reflect your desired output size and create your new masterpiece.
    hope this idea helps
