Re start my Ibook

Hello and sorry for my bad english, I'm french!
I have a new ibook G4 and I read on the web that they do not advise to re-start the ibook every day but that it's better to put "on sleep" the computer.
It's right or not?
Thank you for your help.
Jacques

Welcome to the iBook Discussions!
I believe there is no right or wrong answer to your question. Personally, I leave my laptop on all the time and it only sleeps. The only time I restart is for a system update or backup. I used to use my iBook all the time like this and now I keep my PowerBook this way. Some people will say it's more "wear and tear" on the iBook's hard drive to startup each day, but I'm not sure there is any evidence to support this. So, it could be just fine to restart your iBook every day. I think this is a personal decision you can decide for yourself which way works best.

  • Problem starting my iBook G4

When i start my iBook it gets as far as the blue screen with the loading bar in a small silver window with the apple logo. When its there the bar doesnt move and nothing happens?? i keep restarting it and trying again but still... nothing. Begging for help or advice

Burn some of you photos to CD's and delete them. Same with .mp3 files. You need to have at least 10% of the drive free at all times for efficient operation and 15% is better.
You can use Monolingual to eliminate any language files you don't use, freeing up to 1GB. You can also go to /Library/Printers and delete any printer drivers you don't need. That's can be another GB.

  • I can't start the iBook, please help!

I have got an iBook G4, that I buyed in July 2005; yesterday I've tryed to start the computer but I can't!
I push the start button, there's the normal sound and in the screen the normal white page with the apple...but the iBook doesn't enter in the operative system!!!
    What can I do??
    Must I format the computer?
    Must I call the assistance?
Please, help me! It's very important!

Hi Lucia and Welcome to Discussions.
Don't worry, it's not time to format yet!
The first thing to try is to see if your iBook will start in Safe Mode.
If your iBook is on, turn it off.
Press the power button and immediately you hear the start-up chime press and hold the shift ⇧ key. Keep holding the shift key until you see the rotating pin wheel. Release the shift key. Allow the iBook to finish starting up. This will take a lot longer. Log in at the prompt.
If the iBook has successfully started up in Safe Mode then restart in the usual way without holding the shift key. Safe Boot runs diagnostic and repair functions that may fix the problem without doing anything else.
If your iBook won't restart normally then do another Safe Boot as described above. Then from a finder window locate the following folders:
/Library/StartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems and drag any third party items onto the desktop.
Restart the iBook in the usual way, without holding the shift key.
If the iBook starts normally then you know there is an issue with one of the third party start up items that you were using at start up.
If the iBook won't restart normally then do another Safe Boot as described above.
Open System Preferences>Accounts>log in items, select any log in items in the window & remove them by clicking on the - sign at the bottom of the window.
Restart your iBook in the usual way without holding the shift key.
See if that works and post back with the results.
    Best of luck.

  • HT5065 can movies be used as chapter start in iBooks Author?

    Hi all,
part of a book i am designing has a requirement to use movies/moving images as full-page (full-screen) chapter starts. Is this possible? The movies would have text overlaid on them. Many thanks for your time. Best wishes, Richard

OK KT, if i decide to go the full-screen 'tap to play' route, is that possible with chapter starts? Would this have any adverse effect on other aspects of the book? For instance, the chapter starts have a linked relationship with the contents page, would it affect this?
However, if it is possible to do this do i simply delete the existing picture, drop in a media widget then insert my movie into that?

I did use my mac while it was updating, im zero at this and it did not warn me and I always use my mac while i downloading things. I also had my isight plugged in maybe that was not good as well.
Never even thought I had to repair the drive before updating. now i know and knowing is half the battle.

After watching a DVD on my Ibook last night. My Ibook stopt working because I forgot to plug it in to the socket. A couple of hours later I wanted to start my Ibook up again. And got problem. My Ibook isn´t coming further then the grey start up screen with the apple logo and the little grey wheel that is spinning.
This is really getting scary. Please help

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Is your data backed up? If it isn't I'd buy Prosoft Data Rescue and an external hard disk that is Firewire to copy your information to prior to troubleshooting.
Once you are sure all your data managed to get on the external hard disk, or that you are backed up, follow these instructions to take care of the gray screen:

To good citizens of the MAC world,
I am the founder of a non-profit organization, we are caring for 6,200 orphans and street kids in Vietnam.  A donor had just donated her used iBook G4 for us to use in one of our several "learning centers" in Vietnam.  Folks sometimes donating PC but this is the first time we ever received a MAC.. :-)  I would like to know how to start this iBook all over new: change username and password.  I am looking so forward to bring it to Saigon in a few days and let our children experience MAC ... I am a 2 years MAC users and I have no intention to return to the Dark side.  Please help. I have the original OS disk.  Thank you so much.

There should be no need to zero the hard drive.
Using the Restore discs that came with the iBook when it was new, restore the system software using the appropriate instructions which you can find through a link contained in this Apple Knowledge Base article:

    Good luck with it.

  • Need help starting very troubled iBook

About a week ago I started having problems starting my iBook (it would get stuck on the Apple screen), and the few times I could get it to start up, it would lock up soon after. So I've already decided the end is near for it and I've upgraded to a MacBook.
However, I'd like to get on my iBook at least one last time to deuathorize a few programs and grab a few files. But now it's even worse than last week. Instead of getting stuck on the Apple screen, it just shuts down. I started it from a Techtool Pro CD, however that's got its own set of problems (probably part of a different discussion, but for whatever it's worth, it runs into problems with the SMART drive and surface scan, although it won't let me run any of the repair functions).
Anyway, now I want to run Disk Utility and see if that fares any better, but I can't figure out how to eject the Techtool Pro disk. I tried holding down the mouse button while restarting, but the computer shuts down before it gets a chance to eject. I also tried reseting the PRAM, but again it just shuts down shortly after the third chime. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Try starting in Open Firmware and ejecting the diasc.
    1. Restart the computer.
    2. Immediately after the startup sound, press and hold the key combination Command-Option-O-F.
Note: The Command key has the Apple and () icons on it.
    3. Release the keys when you see a white screen that says "Welcome to Open Firmware."
    4. At the prompt, type: eject cd
    5. Press Return, then wait a few seconds. The disc drive should eject any disc that is present, and "ok" appears behind your command when the action is complete.
    6. Type: mac-boot
    7. Press Return.
Your computer should now start up normally.

  • Safari upgrade crashed my iBook - can't start the computer anymore!

After the latest Safari upgrade, all I get is a blue screen when I start my iBook.
I've tried holding down the option key while restarting to be able to select the hard drive and then boot, but that didn't work. All I get is a blue screen or a grey one with the Apple in the middle.
The upgrade worked just fine on my new iMac, so it is not a network problem.
    Any ideas?

Sorry not to get back to you sooner. I was out all day.
I noticed in your original post that you mentioned an iMac. Do you have a Firewire cable? (I think it is a 6 pin to 6 pin that you need). If yes, make sure the iBook is turned off. Attach the firewire to both machines and start up the iBook holding down the 'T' key. This should put you into Target Disc Mode, and your HD will appear on the iMac's Desktop. You can then open Disk Utility on the iMac, select the iBook's HD, and try to repair it this way. Disk Utility is located in the Applications Folder, under Utilities. THe next thing I can think of trying, if the above does not work, is to reset the PMU. It may not help, but it shouldn't hurt, either. For instructions on how to do this go here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431?viewlocale=en_US
    Hope some of this helps.

  • Refurbished iBook won't start

My new refurb started fine out of the box for about two days. Now it begins start up with the the correct sound but freezes on the initial blue screen. With the included system install disk it goes to the apple logo and start up circular timer before freezing. With Techtool pro it goes to the apple logo before showing about 7 pixels near the apple and freezes. If I try to start the iBook as an external firewire drive it doesn't do anything.
    Suggestions please? Thanks.

Hi Paul, After putting the battery back in try resetting the PMU.
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
    3. Wait 5 seconds.
    4. Press the Power button to restart the iBook.
If that doesn't work try resetting PRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
If neither work get onto support who will probably have you do the above again
    Good luck.

Well try this and see if it helps:
    http://www.coreyarnold.org/ibook/
If so it's U28 on the bottom of the board. The shim fix will work for a good time but a permanent repair is to have the chip resoldered. $40 at Superior.
the first problem was that date/time will lost,
That's because the power is interuppted.
is the problem the Backup battery? And how to change?
There is no backup battery or PRAM battery like in the PowerBooks. There is a .22 Farad super capacitor that will hold settings for a while but not long. Meant to allow a battery change.

  • Strange distorted colours on my ibook screen, blacks turn to reds, help!

    Hello!
I am posting my display problem here so that i don't have to spend unnecessary money on it. So the problem began 3 days ago when i started my ibook, the apple logo that usually is the center of a blue screen, was a bit grey with some red highlights and the blue ceased to be blue to turn to purple... when it boots it shows a lot of red shades all in a distroted form, the black colour no longer exists and was turned into red, i also have a pattern of red diagonal lines all over the display... what can this be? i still haven't done anything, what do you recommend me to do?
    Thank you very much!

Sounds like it's probably a defect in the video controller.
Are you still under warranty? If so, get it in for repair.
If not, check to see if you qualify for a free repair under this program:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/
If so, take it in for inspection, and request service under this program.
I believe that this extension only covers G3 iBooks. So, if you have a G4, you're probably going to have to rely on warranty coverage.
If you are not covered under warranty or the extension program, then you'll probably be looking at paying for a new logic board unless they can find a simple problem.
But, it sounds like it's the video controller to me. This is integrated in the main logic board. So, it's going to require replacing the entire logic board.
The question is: Can you get it done free or will you have to pay for it.
Check to see if you qualify for the free repair.
    I hope this helps.

  • Delivering our iBook from outside U.S. - our story

    Hello Everyone,
Last year when starting our iBook project I was hungry for as much reliable information as possible. This community was very helpful and I hope to be able to help anyone interested in creating and delivering their iBook. So I hope to provide recommendations for people to help them.
My wife wrote a huge book on caring for Eclectus Parrots and I desinged the book using iBooks Author. We live outside the U.S. (Australia) and so we looked at several of the publishing houses to deliver our book for us. The 'process' of setting up tax ID's and handling all of that seemed daunting at the time - but it is not. I highly recommend that if you speak english well and can devote a day of phone calls, and about $100 you will do just fine and you will be 30% richer in the long run.
Setting up an iTunes Connect account is easy. Getting an EIN from the U.S. is also reletivly easy. For some reason we had trouble last year contacting the tax office, but once we got through they were very helpful and within about 30 minutes we had our EIN. Next, you need your ISBN which are easy to get and once you pay the fee with Thorpe-Bowker you get your ISBN immediately. As long as your local tax info is correct, finishing the iTunes Connect tax and banking account is simple.
When designing your iBook in IBA, make sure to follow the guidlines Apple provides. Be sure to have your copyright page in order (the page where you have your ISBN and your "all rights reserved" disclaimer).
Once you are ready to deliver, uploading your book with iTunes Producer was sketchy. I had to upload it a couple of times (800+mb). I have not yet used the new version of iTunes Producer so that may be better. We are selling our book, so it took about 3 days to show up in the iBookstore, but it did and it is incredibly exciting to see your hard work in the store.
If you are in the process of designing your book I highly recoomend you start planning your promotion process. Once it hits the iBookstore you will want people to know about it. It helps to have a small website setup. Start spreading the word through any relatable means possible.
Overall, the process seemed daunting to start with, but it really isn't as hard as it seems. It is so rewarding to see your efforts come to fruition and even more - to see such a positive response from people. I hope this helps in any way.

If readers see this... its not typical!   There  are many threds in the iBooks Author discussion group. Follow the information and use the phone number given......
    1-267-941-1099   USA IRS Telephone
    http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fss4.pdf
Calculat your time zone to call the  tax office around their 6.30pm.  The finish work at 7pm and most US people are home for dinner and not talking to tax officers.   It took me 10 minuutes and I am in Australia and purchased a $10 phone card and the  call cost be about $3.
UK applicants will also need an IBAN number from their  bank.
Next, you need your ISBN which are easy to get and once you pay the fee with Thorpe-Bowker you get your ISBN immediately.
It is now not an Apple iBooks store requirement  - IF you  intend use  publishers other than Apples iBooks store, then you will need to comply with whatever that publisher/online book store requires.
Once you are ready to deliver, uploading your book with iTunes Producer was sketchy.
Sorry,  the  deliver process is easy and strait forward. prepare your  cover and  screen shots as they are requires in advance and  follow the   steps when iTunesProducer is opened by the "Publish" option in iBA.
If you have problems... its OK to stop the process.. clarify your issue and then   go back to start again.
We are selling our book, so it took about 3 days to show up in the iBookstore, but it did and it is incredibly exciting to see your hard work in the store.
Clearence and  arrival in the iBooks store  depends on how busy the review team are and can  take 1- 14 days  or longerdepending on how busy they are.
Overall, the process seemed daunting to start with, but it really isn't as hard as it seems.
This is true,  most people  do not take time to  gather the information and follow the correct  procedure.
Download teh assett guides   available from your iTunesConnect > Deliver your Content.
And also read the Help files in iBA.
As the poster and myself  illustrate...  everybody may have different results, the  best start is gathering all teh information  in the  various threads in the rerlated discussion groups and only post requests  for  advice if you get stuck...
Hope your books are a huge success....

  • Can you work in iBooks Author on more than one computer?

If we start an iBooks Author project on one (older, slower) MacBook Pro, can we continue working on it on another (newer, faster) MacBook Pro? Is it essentially in the cloud or is there a workaround? Thanks!

To work on it you would need to transfer the .iba file from one computer to the other.  It is not in the cloud.

  • Interrupted upgrade on an iBook = kernel panic

I was trying to upgrade an old G3 iBook (10.2) to Tiger, and borrowed a firewire DVD drive from a friend. I won't bore you with why, but I had to interrupt the upgrade and start over. No matter what I do now, I get a kernel panic starting up. I've tried Disk Utility, both from an earlier install CD (I don't know how to start up from the firewire DVD drive) and from a G5 connected via firewire, starting the iBook while holding down "T" on the keyboard. Nothing helps.
I can read and save most of the data via the firewire connection to the G5, but my iPod is linked to this computer, I'm editing two mailing lists from it, and a lot of my data is embedded in programs on it. Is there anything I can do to recover this disk, say by removing recently written and updated system files and rebooting?

No, I can see the iBook drive from the G5 via "target disk mode". I just can't get it to boot by itself. Are you saying I can connect the unbootable iBook to the G5 by target disk mode and also connect the DVD drive by firewire and upgrade the iBook that way, by connecting the upgrade DVD to the iBook through a G5 intermediary?
