Re-syncing sound

We have nearly finished an edit but have noticed not all the audio is there, this has meant re-inputing some audio from the flash cards but this has become so tiring that we have decided to completely re-sync the sound from scratch.
How can we tell Final Cut Pro to use the new re-synced sound on the clips that we have edited and all the fade points and levels etc? Or, are we going to have to completely re-build the edit from scratch?
Someone please help before I start to re-sync the sound and find out that it was a waste of time as it will take me two weeks to do it!
Thank you all in advance!
Richyboy.

Hi Jerry,
We are working in DV with sound recorded separately onto flash cards which we have on DVD's.
The problem is we started editing with what we thought was the complete sound, so have pretty much finished it, however, we have looked back and have found all the merged clips in a bin that the assistant editor did. In short, we've edited with the wrong files.
Because however, the assistant editor has not synced the sound up well, im gonna do it again anyway. What I am concerned about is there a way that I can reassemble the edit, without having to go through it all manually, i.e. is there a way of using an EDL, paste attributes etc?
Know it sounds complicated, but we need to find a process by which we can keep the edit we are happy with, but bring in the new sound.
Cheers for your help.
Rich.

When you're shooting use the ciak , then when in imovie, sync the sound of ciak with the closing of it and you're done
If u havent's used , just seek for a sound or a part of speech witch is very evident to sing
    Do it before cut video

  • Sync sound in timeline

    Hi
I would like to sync sound from my ZOOM h4n that was taken during shooting replacing the DSLR sound. What's the best method to do that?
    Thanks

Sometimes merging clip by matching waveforms doesn't work due to a huge difference in the camera audio and the zoom H4N waveforms (primarily caused by different audio levels). I tried, premiere could never merge efficiently and there were always sync issues. Hence, I always merged clips by setting markers on the claps of both the tracks. If there are no claps then look for a clap like snap, ding, etc in the background. If none found, then use a monosyllabic word in the dialogue. This always works.

  • Sync Sound, Easy Answer Come on guys

Wow Can;t Belive I am asking this one,
I am syncing sound from a dat recorder to dv captured footage. For the life of me I cannot create independant subclips.
Our original capture was not broken down into takes, so we have sub clipped all of the clips from what we have logged. Now I try to link the sound to the video in the timeline and it is creating a new SEQUENCE and not an independant clip, when I click create subclip. Surely it should be easier than that
All we want is to link the media (already created subclips with aiff audio) and create new independant files.
    Please help
    Thanks

  • Sync sound mono stereo issue

I'm currently syncing sound for a short film on Premiere CC. I synced all the clips in the timeline and it all syncs and sounds great. But when I "merge clip" the clips audio in the bin changes. The sync is still perfect but the sound goes from stereo to mono and tracks are added. The audio on-set was recorded in two ways.
    1) 1 track stereo L+R
    2) 3 track mono
When I merge clips with the the 1 track stereo, it goes from being one track to two. And it's no longer L+R. Both tracks are centered. When I sync the 3 track mono it adds 6 additional tracks. the top track being the audio and the bottom two being empty. Then the 4th track has audio followed by two empty tracks. Then the 7th track has audio followed by two empty tracks. Why am I having this issue and how do I fix it?
Tom if you're here I could use your help. Thank you!
    Dan

The issue comes from multi-channel .wav files.
I've worked on projects with multiple audio sources where the sound guy recording each one as discreet .wav files. So if you had two lavs and a boom for a particular shot, each take would generate three distinct .wav files. It took slightly longer to align on the timeline for syncing, but when I performed Merge with them, everything worked fine.
But on my current project I was working with a different sound recordist who would record those multiple sources into a single multi-channel .wav file. They were all recorded mono, but on some shots it would result in 6 different recorded mono tracks. Premiere displays those multiple mono tracks in their own separate tracks, already lined up on the timeline.
But when I merge this audio with picture, the resulting clip is crazy.
When the audio is synced and merged with picture into a clip, it exponentially adds blank tracks. Normally, during a merge, stereo tracks are split into two distinct mono tracks, one for each channel and mono tracks should remain the same. That is what is supposed to happen. But as we see here, an additional thing is going on that shouldn't happen.
Instead, with multi-track files, it treats ALL of the tracks as singular multi-channel tracks and tries to "split" them by creating additional empty tracks. But the most bizarre thing of all is that the number of dupes is equal to the total number if tracks. So for a shot with two lavs and a boom, there would be three tracks in the one clip. But Premiere is treating each of the three tracks as if each of them has three channels and creates three tracks for each of them; one with audio and two blank ones, for a total of nine tracks. For shots with three actors on lavs and with a boom, there are four tracks that are multiplied four times, giving me 16 tracks. I even have some takes where the five original mono tracks are turned into 25 tracks. Again, only five of them actually have audio in them and the rest are blank.
It's exponential. Had I been given an 8 track file, it would be turned into 64 tracks but 56 of them would be blank!
To make it even more fun, the real audio is spread out vertically on the timeline with the dummy tracks in between also equal to the number of real tracks. So a merged 4 track clip places the real audio on tracks 1, 6, 11, & 16, but audio from a merged clip with 5 tracks puts the audio on tracks 1, 7, 13, 19, & 25. So I can't just do a blanket "Modify Audio Channel" on everything and delete the dead tracks. It is all relative.
After the clips were borked up with the extra tracks, I went to Clip->Modify->Audio Channels and turned off all the empty channels, then saved a preset based on how many tracks there were. So in my footage bin I was able to organize by Audio Info and it listed the number of tracks it had. So I could put all of my 12 Mono Track clips together, highlight them all, then apply my "12 Mono" channel filter preset to all of them at once. Then I dragged them back to the timeline and they were fixed. Technically, those blank tracks probably still exist, but they are no longer visible.
And better yet, it doesn't put any vertical gaps between them. So if my audio was really on tracks 1, 6, 11, and 16 it places them on the timeline in tracks 1-4.
Now that I have the presets I can apply it to any further projects where I encounter this. It is still idiotic and obnoxious but not as catastrophic as I thought it was.

  • Help Overcoming Sync Sound Problems

I have some video footage that a client has handed over where the sync sound shot on location is, shall we say, less than optimal. It is interview footage of Doctors in Emergency Rooms and was shot on location in empty ER treatment rooms. It is very echo-y/hollow and has a lot of background voices from out in the hall of the ER.
Though I would like to minimize the background voices, I can live with them. The real issue I need to some advice on is how to minimize the hollow/echo sound from shooting in an empty sheetrock/linoleum room? The levels are excellent and the voices are crystal clear.
I am true novice at Soundtrack Pro (and sound in general) and would really appreciate some advice on how to make the voice track "richer".
    Quad G5, Dual G5, Dual G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I can't walk you though it step by step (*maybe somebody else can). But here are some things to look at:
Echoes in a particular room, especially without significan movement of the mic, fall at ver specific frequencies. They can be greatly reduced with careful use of extremely narrow parametric equalizations.
The following is non-FCP specific but you'll figure it out. The short story: you want to set up a parametric EQ with a narrow band and with the gain pumped up.
Now sweep the frequency up from the bottom until the sound gets really boomy and annoying. You just found one of those frequencies. Center the frequency where it sounds the lousiest.
Now turn the gain all the way down. The sound should be much better. Tweak the bandwidth and the gain until the most objectionable echo is taken out without affecting the desired audio too badly. This is subjective.
You're not done yet. Repeat this process with another parametric EQ, sweeping up friom the frequency of the first one. Repeat all the above. And so on until you've got a handle on it. Most of the nasty echos will be in the boomy bass area.
If you're really finicky, you may now find yourself going back and raising the gain on some of these to get back some of the audio quality. Echo isn't all bad, but there is definitely such a thing as too much.
I guess I do go step by step... darn, I don't have time for that!

  • How to sync sound?

    Hi!
When I watch movies on my MacBook Pro, using the TV as display, I get a small delay on the sound (or picture I can't really figure it out). Is the an app to sync the sound by delaying it or the picture?
    /Jonas

It doesn't sound that easy. It's surely easy to do but not very applyable when you pick out a movie to see with friends and have to test and convert it first...
There has to be some way to do it in real time?

  • How to put together a two camera shoot and sync sound

I have some live footage of musical performance. I have footage from two cameras and the sound off the desk that I need to sync up. Can somebody suggest the best way to do this? I had hoped I could sync the sound to both cameras, then put in which shots I chose at any given point, but I don't know if the system will do that. Any suggestions?

You want to do a multicam.
It is extremely well suited for this.
Since you don't seem to be aware of this, I recommend that you follow some good tutorials on this.
To get you started, take a look at a few videos explaining how this works; then you may want to read a bit on the manual of the software.
You may want to start with episode of 153, which explains how to put together a multicam clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKhmZbVgywk
Then follow the next episode, about cutting.

  • How to sync sound to a pdf presentation

    Hi,
Im doing a pdf presentation where im making some images appear according to a background music. To make the music play, i link it in the page atributes of the first page as an action (page open, play sound). Then i synched the images with the music using transitions and autoflip. Everything was fine until i try to open the file in another pc. When i tried opening in other machine, the sound was way off. When i opened the file it said buffering,  and then the music was like slowed in relation with the images.
Is there a way to sync music to pages, or preload the file so it wont be out of sync.
PS. This is for a school project, where we have to use acrobat, so theres no chance of me doing it on other software.
    Thank you very much,
    Andy

I did kind of a reverse process several years ago. I set the timing of each page and set the audio links to start with the opening of each page. Probably not useful to you. I would be interested in whatever solution you find for your process.

  • Out of sync sound  when import mpeg4

I've import mpeg4 file from my Flipcam. I just wanted to make tigher ins and outs. But when I pull it into to timeline - the sound is out of sync. Any ideas why?
    Thanks in advance.

MPEG 4 is not an editing format.
Convert your video to one of the codecs found in Final Cut Pro"s Easy Setup menu.
Does this camera shoot HD or SD?

  • Out of sync sound on itune movies downloaded (and external HDCP)

My computer has always had a sound and movie sync issue but it has gotten much worse since the last version of itunes.  I had purchased a move a few weeks ago and it was able to play on my computer and externally on our HD TV (which is HDCP compatible).  Now all my movies are completely out of sync in minutes and they are not able to play on our tv.   What is going on?
I have windows 8 and now itunes 11.0.2.26

    Hi Joel Nelson
As an added note, the DVD plays well on my computer but the movie on the second layer won't load on my set-top DVD player. Separate, probably un-related issue, but worth noting.
Let me get this striaght .... It's only out of sync on the standalone DVD Player but plays ok on the computer? Is this correct?
If so, have you tried the out of sync DL DVD on another set top DVD Player to perhaps isolate this issue?
Suggestion: Take it to a local consumer electronics shop and try it out on multiple name brand DVD Players.

  • Shot an Genesis HD Camera, now how to sync sound?

    Here's the situation:
    1. Shot on Genesis camera (looks great) which records onto HD-CAM SR stock.
    2. Audio mono mix on the tape's track 1.
    3. Audio timecode data on tape's track 2. This is time-of-day timecode that does not include the audio reel number.
    4. Master six channel audio "reels" are DVDs.
    Here's the problem:
How do you turn that timecode data on track 2 into an EDL the sound dept. can use to rebuild from the sound reels?
Much thanks to any insight on this. This problem is baffling a lot of folks, and the easy scapegoat is Final Cut. Personally, I think film production is turning at last into a video production and people are having a hard time accepting it.
    -tim

First off, wow, you shot with the new Genesis? Very cool, how did you like it? What type of project did you shoot? Feature, commercial, documentary, etc...?
As far as syncing your sound... Most high end productions that shoot HD also go into a telecine suite to transfer their circle takes and sync their sound. This also creates new HD masters because I would not suggest using your camera masters for anything else except an archive (like negatives).
So one way to do it would be to go into a telecine suite at somewhere like Encore or Company 3 and have your dailies transferred with sync'd sound to new HDCam SR tapes and include a flex file in that order. This flex file is then input into cinema tools and final cut. Then when you create your EDL, you have all the numbers you need for sound and picture. And now you also have protection masters.
Plaster City does not have telecine so they may not be able to help you with this process. But they may have some other way of bringing all this data together for you in a flex file or cinema tools database.

  • How To Capture Sync Sound for Film Project

Wisdom from the Greater Good Sought OR Please Point Me in the Right Direction
Gearing up to shoot and edit an independent feature. Everything shot on film (16 and 35) sound recored on DAT. Film will be Xfered to DV and DVCPRO HD. DV will be cut on new Powerbook G4 using offline RT. Online (still using FCP) will then be done on a G5 using the HD tapes. Should we sync the DAT audio with the film to DV and HD Xfer - or capture seperately with a DAT deck into the powerbook and sync up with FCP? Syncing during the film to tape Xfer seems the simplest - but may end up eating too much of our limited budget. What sort of workflow issues will I be in for if we decide to bring the DAT into the computer separately? What else do I need to consider?
Any thoughts, ideas, warnings appreciated. Thanks.

What Jerry says. About the only thing to be done with the DATs after that is pulling off all the wild tracks for the sound portion of the edit.
Locling them up in fcp is, to my way of thinking, a TERRIFIC waste of time and offers you the most potential headaches when thinks get unlinked.
