Re: Tecra M9 bios update without windows

I have a Tecra M9 running only [Opensolaris 2009.06|http://opensolaris.org/os/downloads/] on it.
Is there any chance to make a Bios update (acutally I have 1.50)
Is there an ISO image or dos tools - so I can create my own ISO image...
Thanks
GerryH

Hi!
Why do you want to update the BIOS? Is it really necessary?
I mean a BIOS update is always a little bit risky because in worst case you could destroy the ROM module and then it must be reflashed from a notebook technician or in worst case the mainboard must be exchanged.
Anyway, I think a BIOS update is not possible on your OS. This update can only be done on Windows a running Windows system.
In your case I would ask the nearest ASP as Eldorado suggested. Maybe they are able to do the update on DOS.

  • Thinkpad T440 BIOS update without Windows Utility - problem

So I wanted to update my BIOS from 2.23 to 2.30 from here - http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds035967. First think's first - my T440 does not have any CD/DVD, so obviously I need a bootable USB to update my BIOS. Second, I'm using Ubuntu and no longer have (or want to have) the Windows installation.
In order to make a bootable USB with the BIOS iso file I tried 2 things:
    1) Tried following this guide - httpawww.lenzg.net/archives/358-Updating-the-BIOS-on-my-ThinkPad-T440-without-Windows-or-a-DVD-Drive.html, everything seems to be have worked, except the fact that it does not boot when I try to boot trough the USB, and I bumped there.
    2) Open a Windows on my second laptop and try to make a bootable USB from Windows (maybe it will help?). Tried both the standard Windows USB DVD Tool and got the error - "The selected file is not a valid ISO file. Please select a valid ISO file and try again." Fair enough, here I started to get suspisous that something is wrong. I tried and burned a bootable USB with PowerISO, but again as method 1) it does not boot.
Just to mention that in my BIOS I have the Secure Boot off and both the Legacy mode and UEFI, with Legacy first.
    Any ideas how to proceed?

Sorry, I don't know about Linux much less then nothing.
But I'm sure there are the following tools for:
    - disk/partition management, to make primary partition on the stick as active, to be bootable
    - mount .iso image as a virtual CD to explore that one and get its content. Or, perhaps, there is .iso content viewer that supports CDFS.

  • Satellite Pro A60 - BIOS update without OS

I have an Satellite Pro A60, trying to install XP pro but says it needs update BIOS, have downloaded new upgrade, unzipped and only one file there, will not boot as no bootable file.
There currently is no OS on the laptop, I understand i need an ISO file but where is it..!!..

    Hi vespec,
I think PinkPanther has already read the thread and you should take the time to to read his posting too.
As he wrote, the BIOS update is Windows based. That means you have to install Windows firstly before you can start the update. If you unzip the files, they will not boot because they are not bootable. You cant start the update without Windows.
Last but not least as PinkPanther wrote, a DOS based update that you can boot from, is only available for ASPs I think.
But it would be interesting to know which error message you get exactly while installing XP. I cant imagine that BIOS update is necessary to install the OS. BIOS has nothing to do with that
And have you tried to install the OS from Toshiba recovery disk? This should work properly because it contains an image of factory settings.

  • Compaq Presario SR2129UK bios update for windows 8 pro 32bit

    Hi all.
I have recently upgraded my operating system from Windows 7 pro to Windows 8 pro. I have alos changed the CPU to a pentium D, The power supply and the graphics card but I am having from with my SD ram and temperature displays.
I want to upgrade my bios if possible due to all the upgrades, when I looked in this site it doesn't mention windows 8 operating system with my PC? My system info is below.
Compaq Presario SR2129UK bios update for windows 8 pro 32bit.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi:
The only BIOS update for your model is for Windows Vista (v5.23).
There aren't any newer BIOS releases than that one.
You would need to be running Windows Vista in order to update the BIOS, or you would run a better than 99% chance of completely wrecking your PC.

  • Tecra A10 - BIOS updater doesn't work on Windows 7

Upgrading BIOS for TECRA A10/M10 and Satellite Pro S300/S300M to version v1.90 using P0065v190.exe (bios-20090304141534) fails with message:
"[Error] BIOS Update is not supported OS. Unsupported OS or service pack is installed."
Note: Executing as an Administrator returns the same error.
Probably Windows 7 is not supported but, it must be an explicit protection since the Vista version should work in 7. There's any updater parameter to skip this protection?

BIOS update is designed and tested for certain OS. Win7 is not on the market and at the moment Toshiba offers tested BIOS updated for Vista only.
Sorry but what else to say. You probably know how sensible BIOS update is and how dangerous it can be. So don't play with this and don't make not-tested experiments with this stuff.
In few months Win7 will be on the market and Toshiba will start official support. You can wait few more weeks isnt it?

  • Protege P4000 - BIOS update without floppy drive

    Hi,
I have a Protege P4000 which, I beleive, was orignally purchased without a floppy drive. Now that I'm upgrading the OS to Win XP I need to install more memory, and as many other forum members point out this won't work without a BIOS update.
However the BIOS update available from the website is for the Tranditional install only, and requires a Floppy drive (which I don't have). Is it possible to get a version that runs under Windows, or find another way to run the traditional install? The website seems to suggest that Windows installation is preferred, but the software isn't provided.
    Thanks.

    Ok
I guess that's the reason for the problems. It is not so easy to know anyway because there are several ways to upgrade the BIOS on some of the models.
The method you are using apply only to Toshiba BIOS and when there is a diskette available with the extracted BIOS package on.
In this case we're using a bootable CD so that won't work here.
Instead, start the machine with the power button, and when you see the Toshiba-logo, press F12.
That will bring you to the BOOT Device selection menue. It consists of a small icon-menue below the TOSHIBA-logo.
The internal HDD is highlighted and you can move the marker by pressing the arrow keys.
Move the marker to the icon that looks like a CD.
    Press ENTER.
Now it will boot from the CD and hopefully update the BIOS.

  • Tecra A3: BIOS update 'rom file wrong szie' [sic]

If I try to update my bios, I get an error message 'rom file wrong szie' and yes that is the way it is spelt.
Also when I try to update the software for my multidrive - which Toshiba sent me the link for it - says: 'drive not found'. What's going on??

    Hello
Tecra A3 is pretty new unit and it will be interesting to know why you want to make BIOS update. Is there any problem with it?
Which BIOS update doesnt run, windows or traditional one? If you have no serious problem, dont do it at all.
The issue with your multidrive is a little bit confused for me. Which software you should install?

  • BIOS update on Windows 7 and XP

    Hi,
i have XP on C:\ and want to install windows 7 on D:\ and my friend did the same without any issue's.
but my big question is after i installed win7 on D: and have XP on C: when i try to install/update the BIOS for windows 7 then what will happend to XP ?
    thnx.

    Hi
Your question is a little bit confusing but if you install the BIOS update nothing will happen on XP. If you make a dual boot system you can still boot from XP and Windows 7 too.
As Lars already wrote the BIOS has nothing to do with OS that you install. ;)
Furthermore there is no BIOS update that only works with Windows 7. This is not known to me. The only difference is that for some notebooks are BIOS versions for 32bit OS and 64bit OS. If you install Windows 7 32bit and XP is 32bit everything will work properly on both OS.

  • TECRA 8100 BIOS update problem - PLEASE HELP!

    Hi.
I have Windows XP and I try to update bios with win-BIOS-250.exe. But when I run this file it appears a window with communicate: TOSHIBA Common Modules is not installed. I don't have floppy drive - maybe it is the reason. Is there any possibility to update bios without floppy drive?

    Hi
If You cannot or do not want to install the Common Modules, there is another trick to try.
Sure it's a lot more complicated, but it will enhance the cool image you already have :) Your friends will be highly impressed!
It will also demand some tech knowledge on how to handle diskette images and create bootable CD's.
You can download the BIOS-diskette intended for traditional BIOS updates to another PC - one that has a diskette drive.
    Create the diskette there.
Start a CD burning software and choose to create a bootable CD. Normally the burning software will ask you to provide the bootable diskette - point to the one You just created. Burn the CD.
    Done!
Now you can boot the 8100 on the CD and it will upgrade the BIOS.
Maybe a waste of CD-media...but if you really need it...
    BR

  • Tecra A4 Bios Update failed!

I try to update Tecra A4 Bios to version 1.7, of ATI or NVIDIA, using windows method. When the system turn off to restart, never start again. At this moment when i try to turn on have to click power buttom for a few seconds, turn on power led for 1 second give sinal of acessing disk, and turn off again.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks

    Hello kikas_sousa,
You have had a failed BIOS update. It happens sometimes, especially when a wrong version (model) was downloaded and used or due to an interrupted upgrade. Don't worry though, as the spinning of the floppy drive (attempt to BOOT from floppy) is a good sign!!! It means that your system can still accept an upgrade but with some additional help from you:
Download the alternative BIOS update from TOSHIBA for your model (not the windows one, but the DOS version) and make sure it was downloaded CORRECT. Further instructions you will find in a previous thread that has been confirmed as working. You can give it a try OR ask the Toshiba Service for assistance (you will have to send them your notebook).
The link to the thread is here:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=19801&messageID=72599
Whatever you do is ON YOUR OWN RISK, though. Please remember this, as I don't want to be held responsible for providing you this idea. Most efficient way is always the Toshiba service as they are very well aware about what to do in each situation.
Please consider reporting if this method was a success for your case because we need some feedback to provide "working" solutions to fellow Toshiba users like you before a thread is locked due to inactivity.

  • BIOS recovery without windows

    Hello,
first of all, I'm french so my english may not be perfect, sorry about that.
I have a problem with my Compaq Mini 110c 1030sf : a BIOS update went wrong, and windows won't boot anymore (neither XP, nor Se7en). Linux does though.
The problem is HP provides .exe BIOS files that can't run in DOS mode, but only in Windows... which of course is embarassing, as the reason I want to flash my BIOS is that Windows won't boot.
If anyone has a solution to update HP BIOS without WIndows (using a bootable disk or even Linux), I would really be grateful !

    Hi:
I have extracted and zipped just the BIOS flash file .exe. Perhaps you can use it either in DOS or Linux on a bootable CD:
I don't know if this file also has to be run in Windows, but perhaps not.

  • Tecra A11 - Bios Update offered - necessary?

Hi - I've just been offered a BIOS Update for my Tecra A11-17N (Via Toshiba Service Station) - BIOS Update v3.10....
Clicking on the update doesn't offer any details as to what it contains/fixes/improves - it just says basically "install, and computer will re-boot a few times".
My Tecra is running perfectly - no issues at all. Should I ignore this?

    Hello
    > My Tecra is running perfectly - no issues at all. Should I ignore this?
Youre right. In this case you can ignore this update because everything works perfectly.
BIOS update is always a little bit risky so it shouldnt be done just for fun. It should only be done if its really necessary and in your case you dont need it.
So have fun with your Tecra A11 and you can forget the update :)

  • 560X Bios Update without Battery

I have bought me a old ibm 560X and want to make a bios update.
so far was everything okay but then i got a message that i need a battery in.
my problem is my battery doesn't work and i don't want to buy me a new one.
is it possible to update the bios without a battery ?

According to IBM/Lenovo you need both AC and battery power when you update the BIOS because if there is a power failure during the process you will damage the motherboard. The requirement for both power sources is supposed to protect you.
However, if you are willing to take the risk, there are ways to make the update software think you have both power sources even when you don't. See for example:
    http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Talk:BIOS_Upgrade#BIOS_upgrade_without_battery
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=149526
One other suggestion is described here. It's worth trying. You only need to get a charge of a minute or two to do a BIOS update.
    [RANT]
This restriction applies to all ThinkPads including current models. ISTM that if the customer is willing to take the risk, they should be able to do so, obviously after saying "yes" to several warnings, etc. Some of us who own older ThinkPads are willing to take the risk and/or have our AC power on a UPS (i.e. battery backup) regardless.
    [/RANT]
