Re-thinking public school education in U.S.

I was thinking that it's been a long time since public schools were introduced, and times have changed.
It's hard for most high school graduates to get decent jobs and not all can go to colleges even with grants and aid.
Although many at that "age" of graduating want to get out of the house and get on their own, some do want to focus on some aspect of an interest they developed in public school.
Why not re-think the whole system and make it grade K through 14 instead of 12 ?
For the last 2-3 years make the focus a choice of a variety of "real" interests and potential areas of real employment ...
Like, programming, networks, electronics, bio physics, chemisty, hvac, auto mechanics, health care, ( dont know what to call this one...but its helping senior citizens manage their affairs and networking for housing, health care, etc )...
And so on.
Some of this would be kinda like "technical school" stuff, and some would be similar to a community college WITHOUT the humanities "pre-requisites" often found in those schools.
Kids would have a MUCH better chance to find a job after graduation. They would also be much more "focused" and motivated by then ...making it easier to score high on college entrance exams if that is their choice instead of trying to find a job right away.
In short, the public school system is not working too great in part because kids today have to learn about 40 per cent MORE than I had to when I was their age...so many new things and technologies today...more of everything !  And we try to fit them into a world that demands so much with so little real chance to learn what they need to even FIND a job they are qualified for. Years ago companies would "train" their new employees and it was a long term relationship, between employer and employee.  That is obviously going out the window, as things are not only outsourced to other countries but the global open trade stuff is putting so much more pressure on all business to be extremely competitive and frankly can't afford to train people if they can possibly avoid it.
New public school system would solve a lot of stuff...yet nobody has even mentioned this 14 year potential..
I think it's a good idea, and better than the alternatives being proposed ( longer school days, longer school weeks, more testing to insure students are all up to speed by some state standard or fed standard...
Why keep putting more pressure on kids to be supermen ( and women ) when part of this period in their lives should be balanced with actually "enjoying" life and discovery and growing up emotionally and the arts etc ??

Though I have attend more colleges that probably the next 3 people combined, I am a big proponent of the "technical school" concept, and have sat on a couple of boards.
It is probably my jaundiced view of "public education," however, that gets in the way. What I found was that the steering committees were highly political and all, that I was a part of, had some "agenda," to push.
It is probably far to late to change the structure, but I would advocate for State sponsored, but NOT State run, separate technical colleges. In a few instances, I was associated, or at least around privately endowed technical schools, with zero outside influence, once one got past accreditation. Those institutions did not have any agenda, and had no State educational direction, other than what the certificate, or diploma meant. Professors were hired for their abilities and their knowledge. There was no tenure. There were few standardized measures of results, other than from the students, who walked out the door. Most of these professors were also working in the various industries. In many cases, though the school had an endowment, those industries picked up some of the tab, often with services, like free film processing, access to professional equipment, etc.
In those limited cases, the students did get some theory, but more time was spent on actually doing.
When I was in film school (within a State University system), I managed to take many extra classes from such institutions, just to learn more. In each of those cases, it was for the learning of additional techniques, access to more equipment and services. I do not fault having done so. Yes, some were better than others, but that is life. I took the same class at Loyola four times. The professor was an excellent critic, and I wanted his criticism. Each time I took the class, I got special assignments, rather than the normal, as I had done those already. He would take extra time with me, as he could do the criticism for the rest of the class - on the same lesson. He never complained, and helped me develop a lot of new techniques. This was a still photo class.
My wife, in a totally unrelated field, feels the same for the conventional, structured educational system. She would never work in such an environment again. When she must do collaborative work with universities, and institutions of higher learning, she rules the conference table with an iron fist. If any university is going to partner with her, they MUST leave the political "stuff" at the door, as she will not abide with it.
This seems to have worked well. A couple of years ago, her hospital was given the Gold Award for medical education. It was the first time that a non-university hospital had ever won the award, and it was also the first time that any hospital had won it the first year that they had been nominated. After that win, she was appointed to the board that issues the award. She too feels that far too much effort and too much money are expended on aspects that do not benefit the students. Wasted time - wasted money - students, who never got the education, that they had been promised.
She is the chairman for a UK medical foundation, that concentrates on specialized medical education worldwide. When any university wants to partake, she is happy to have them, but explains "where" they will sit at the table. If they can deal with that, they are welcomed. If they cannot, then their "offer" is quickly declined. One must play by her rules, or they do not get to play. No politics allowed.
I would have that same problem, with your proposal. It is not that it could not work, but I would question whether it would work.
I have just seen politics (at several different levels - not just the national educational aspect) ruin things. I'd like to see such technical schools created in a more free-standing atmosphere. I could envision monetary and logistical support coming from other institutions and foundations, but would love to see them out from under the umbrella of any "educational system."
Just my personal and skewed view of education,
Hunt
PS - good topic!

How do you recover a site license number(for Apple Remote Desktop) that was bought for an Chicago Public School ??

You'll probably need to call Apple Education Sales or Education Support at 800-800-2775 and ask for Apple Software Licensing.  A site/volume license should be recorded at Apple, so they can probably help you out.

This is what I call "Read the  Fine Prints" carefully before making purchases. Consumers must endowe themselves with knowledge ahead of time before making purchases on anything nowdays. Whether or not they offer it isn't something the users on here can do about it since this is a user forum not a HP support Forum. The reason why the consumer laptop is less expensive is because it doesn't have all those other extra stuff that is why they can sell it less in consumer version. What ever the demand is for inexpensive laptop and less extra stuff there will be a market for it. The consumer themselves must do the homework and find that laptop will best fit their needs and what other extras do they need for their line of work not what is pleasing to eye or least expensive to get.
I agree and admit that part of this is my error on my side.
I take this as a lesson learnt - never purchase an IT device solely based on the specifications; you have to really drill yourself to determine what you really need from your device and it's manufacturer (in my case: ADP). You also have to think long and hard because sometimes customer service is usually something that we think we do not need; usually in early stage or period of the ownership of the device, but if you plan to use it long-term, and especially when you need maximum up time and stable operability, a good customer service is probably what you want to have with your device purchase.

    Hi,
In addition to what Ken said, I would suggest that you give Edge Animate a shot as well.
Creative Cloud is available as trial version for 30 days and almost all creative software is bundled with the Creative Cloud. Tutorials are included for each of the products on the respective sections of the website. For instance, this site Website builder | Download free Adobe Dreamweaver CC trial gives you access to the trial version as well as tutorials.
I suggest that you go to http://creative.adobe.com and explore the various options available.

  • Local Public School Wifi restriction on iOS devices

Hello, I'm inquiring about the specific mechanisms that contribute to  why some non-restricted websites have been blocked from being accessed in practically every device at a local public school. I and my other peers currently have access to the internet, passing its authentication and login requirements. However, some sites that are not even blocked ( which can be accessed on a laptop ) are not allowed on mobile device, why is that so? Is there any solution to this issue? Websites that contain important information based on different subjects are essential in letting students learn on the go and in the library partly because the library is always booked full with students and computers are always occupied leaving numerous students without access to proper internet connection. I appreciate any feedback and thank you for looking into this inquiry.

And if the site in question doesn't work even when not connected to the school's network, then it's a fault in the design of the web site, perhaps using Flash content or otherwise not being designed for mobile devices, and that would be something you would need to address with the company running the web site.
In either case, this does not appear to be an issue with the iPod touch, per se, and so is not something anyone here can offer much help with.
    Regards.

  • Ok so am in 9th grade and for christmas i can get a macbook pro i was wondering if i can get the education pricing and am in public school i read it and it says k - 12 school

    please respond

    It doesn't appear so. :-(
If either of your parents works for a school, or you have a sibling in college or accepted to college, they would qualify for the discount:
Apple offers special education pricing on Apple computers, software and select third party products to college students, parents buying for a college student, or teachers, homeschool teachers, administrators and staff of all grade levels. Students who have been accepted to college are also eligible.
K12 - Any employee of a public or private K-12 institution in the United States is eligible, including homeschool teachers. In addition, school board members who are currently serving as elected or appointed members are eligible. PTA or PTO executives currently serving as elected or appointed officers are eligible.

  • PO (purchase order) order through app store school education

Hi, does anyone know or have had experience with purchasing an app or two through the app store using a PO (purchase order)? I work for a school and my department is very adamant about running these POs (never knew what these were until I started working here). I have 2 apps that I want to use in place of adobe cc due to adobe not being able to do PO orders. I know such a hassle working for a school. But any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

We are all users like yourself.  No one from Apple responds directly here (AFAIK).
You might have luck buying volume...
    http://www.apple.com/education/it/vpp/
Or see if your principal will let you purchase the apps on your own - print the receipt from iTunes for your credit card and ask for a reimbursement.
Just don't buy the apps without approval - then you won't have a snowball's chance of getting reimbursed.

  • Back to school education program question

I bought my macbook pro 2 weeks ago. I live in UK and a friend will bring it in a month for me from the us. When Ill first use the computer probably the back to school promotion will start. Is the promotion valid from the day that I buy the computer or from the day I first use it.?

It only applies to purchases made while the promotion is ongoing or within the promotion window (which I don't know as its not currently active but its not usually more than 30 days if memory serves).
You can check the exact range if / when the program re-opens: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/campaigns/back_to_school
If you did somehow qualify, someone would have to bring you (like now) / send you the iPod from the US as the computer purchase was made in the US.
    Good luck!

  • My school has a private, but no public, iTunes U site.

Can I still create a course with iTunes U course creator?

    Hello drummerbloke,
The following website is where K-12 school districts, universities, and colleges can enroll in iTunes U to distribute courses and collections of education content that anyone can access:
iTunes U - Public Site Manager Enrollment
    Before enrolling, make sure that:
You are applying on behalf of an educational institution or K-12 District.
    - iTunes U is a free service available to qualifying K-12 public school districts, and private schools, as well as two- and four-year accredited, degree-granting, public or private colleges and universities.
You have the authority to contractually bind your institution to the terms and conditions of the iTunes U Service Agreement.
    - You will be asked for your supervisor's contact information so that this can be verified.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Public sector-schools

    Hello All,
Has anyone been involved with implementing SAP BW for public school system. Looking for some help in that field.
    Thanks.

    Hi Diane
This is a very brief summary of what is required.  There are quite a few other threads and help documents around the various points, but if you need anything specific then post back here.
    The quota accumulation can be done in Time Evaluation. You will need to;
Create a PCR that analyses the attendance type entries.  Each time the relevant attendance type is entered you can multiply the duration by a relvant factor and add it to a custom Time Type.
You will then need to create an Annual Leave Quota to be accrued in Time Evaluation, and in this add the Time Type into the Base entitlement calculation.
You will also need to create the absence type and associate it to the absence quota to allow the employees to take their accumulated entitlement.
    Regards
    Simon

  • Proof for education discount

I read that education discounts are available and I'm wondering if purchasing a Mac for my daughter who's still in public school counts ?

No, if purchasing for a grade school/high school student, you would not be eligible for the discount.  If she was accepted for a college/university, or if presently attending one, she would be eligible.  Please check the following link for a full understanding of their educational discount.  http://store.apple.com/us/browse/open/salespolicies/edu

  • I am a student, I am going to order a MacBook Pro from education shop. Is that possible to apply for tax free at the same time?

I am a student, I am going to order a MacBook Pro from education shop. Is that possible to apply for tax free at the same time?

In the US I have not seen a state that allows an individual to claim tax exemption...that is reserved for authorized institutions like public school systems.  Only certain states do not have no-sales tax laws.  When I lived in France, to be free from VAT one had to be a non-citizen and would be reimbursed for goods that were shipped out of the country upon exiting the country...not while still residing there.  That was pretty typical of other European countries at the time, Pre-EU days, that is.

  • Dustyscript... a new educational tool

I am starting a project to create a new pseudo-scripting language for 3rd graders on up called Dustyscript...
My intention is to create a converter (~compiler) and an interpreter (~runtime) both written in Java.. (Java, is, after all, a language I am familiar with)...
My hope is that in addition to teaching my eight year old some rudimentary programming ideas, an 'upper-elementary' level curriculum can be created for teaching these concepts to others...
    Anyone is welcome...
    The project is located at:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/dustyscript/
    ~Dave/Xiarcel

Yeah... kinda like what you were saying..
((A Third (3rd) Grader is an 8/9 year old in their Third Grade of public school))
For anyone still looking, the below are only my ideas, thoughts (and they have been flying around all over the place for awhile... some of them might not work):
My idea was to start simple (with only a few supported commands).. Something like:
    say "hello"~
    /*this yields:*/
    hello
    /*Then, my idea was to:*/
    string b = "hello"~
    say b~
    say "b"~
/*the above, for example, would yield:*/
    hello
    b
/*Then I would move on to more detailed...*/
    x:count(1 to 10): say("x is "+x)~
    :x is 1
    x is 2
    x is 3
    x is 4
    x is 5
    x is 6
    x is 7
    x is 8
    x is 9
    x:count(1 thru 10): say("x is "+x)~
    :/*this one would include 10*/
Then I would broaden to concepts like:
    File f = "log.txt"~
    link say:f~
/*this would write all output to file*/
    create String{a,b,c}:Popup("Enter name:","Enter age:", "Enter weight")~
/*that would create a popup frame with a the three labels above, textfields next to them, and a button to send the information on, for example, and then:*/
string aa = "Your name is:"+a~
string bb = "Your age is:"+b~
string cc = "Your weight is:"+c~
    say aa~ say bb~ say cc~
Anyway... I want it to be 'half-way' between Java and human-speak... He still, for example, needs to know what an int is (I think), but all int(s) could be long. He doesn't necessarily need to know that a long is a BIG int.
a string of letters or numbers or both is a "string"
one single letter or number is a "char"
    Eventually, concepts like:
    An Object is a thing...
    type_of_thing:Person(int x,int y,string s)
    /*ex.. x is age, y is weight, s is name*/
    string name = s~
    int age= x~
    int weight = y~
    >'say_name'>:say name
    }~
    Person p = (27,200,"David")~
    p.say_name
    David
(Or not, it might never get that far...)
I have ideas for the back-end of this... and I think that I would like as much help as possible:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/dustyscript
I've set up two mailing lists
    dustyscript-devel
    dustyscript-keywords
(keywords is announcing a new 'script' feature, devel will be for discussion of development)
    ~Dave
