Re too many layers in word for mac

Hi all,
I use word and have done for 15 years. I am very fond of what is is capable of. usually.
However when it comes to designing charts which have multiple images and text boxes and shapes and layers it is not great.
I have tried grouping and messed around in publishing mode to rearrange layers but the whirly cog of doom starts spinning and its tedious and unreliable.
Now i know the macbook has oodles of ram so its definitely just  a word issue.
so either it isnt really designed for doing lots of layers or at least its isnt coping well.
So do i bite the bullet and buy photoshop? or is there some similar package that will create 16 boxes and let me edit text and then layer pictures in jpeg form and allow me to resize and move em all about without feeling like im about to crash the program?
I do weekly alot of work in word and am used to the fonts, insert menus etc . incidentally I tried Pages but it wasnt any better at handling lots of boxes and didnt seem to be pixel accurate when copying and pasting.
what do you guys/girls use out there in design world. Open to suggestions. im downloading a trial of photoshop essentials but im not sure it will do lots of boxes and allow text etc.
or do i painstakingly print to pdf and re insert. quite daunting as i intend making 50 or so of these charts for a project im organising and it will take forever.
Learning curve must be easier with the right tools?
Niall

  • Word for Mac 2008 - documents even at 100% size are too small!

I am new to Mac. Just started using Word for Mac (2008) on my new MacBook Air. (I do not have a current user contract with Microsoft for this Word for Mac, so I cannot call them for support.)
The 100% setting shows my new (and old) documents in a very, very reduced way. Only by zooming to the 200% setting can I get the documents to look a normal, standard size. I never experienced this on a PC, using Word versions 1995, 2000, 2007, 2011. I have searched the internet for answers, but have found nothing to solve this. I am sure there must be others having this same problem. Can anyone help me?

Apparently this is a shortcoming of Mac OS X - resolution independence would allow the display and real world size to match. There is also no way of offsetting this and entering the real dpi of your Macbook Air into MS Word - it just assumes the display is 72dpi and that is that. There is no way to make it correct as it stands unfortunately.

  • Melled vs. Word for Mac

I have Pages which is great for many applications, but I do miss using word on my p.c.. So, I was going to get word for mac, but a friend of mind recommended Mellel. Anyone have any thoughts? I will be using the product for business correspondence and long form documents too.

Sam - try to avoid double posting, among other things, it dilutes your answers. There are lots of things to like about Mellel, and Nisus, Mariner Write, and the list goes on. The great thing is, they all are shareware so download them and see how you like them.
I weaned myself away from Word 2 years ago when Pages was first introduced and I actually haven't used it at all in the last year. At one time I was a slave to Office, especially macros, but with a little thought and planning I was able to reproduce everything. Today my only use of Office is Excel.

  • How do i access word for mac on my macbook air?

how do i access word for mac on my macbook air?

Purchase it.  Here's one link to an Amazon site to buy one of the many Office configurations:
    http://www.amazon.com/Office-Mac-Home-Student-2011/dp/B003YCOJA8/ref=sr_1_3?s=so ftware&ie=UTF8&qid=1349217216&sr=1-3&keywords=office+for+mac
You would receive Office on a CD, and need a disk drive for your MacBook Air to access so you could download the software.

  • Problem selecting text in PDF created by MS Word for Mac 2011

I'm viewing PDFs in Adobe Digital Editions 4.0, and when I try to select text, the text that actually gets selected is 1-2 lines BELOW where the cursor (I-bar) is located.  This makes highlighting text extremely difficult.  This only seems to happen with PDFs that were created in MS Word for Mac 2011 and viewed in Adobe Digital Editions.
If I try opening the very same PDF file in Adobe Reader, the cursor highlights text just fine.  If I open it in Preview, it works fine too.  It just won't work when viewing the PDF in Adobe Digital Editions.

I have not been able to find any info on this issue anywhere, and if anyone knows a fix or workaround, I would greatly appreciate the help.

Thanks; this last reply came closest to 'solving' the issue. While I selected font sub, it at first had no affect on the document.
I then went back to prefs and set the compatability dropdown from 'Custom' (where it had defaulted) to 'Word 2004-2007', assuming these docs were created from a recent past Windows.
I 'Saved As' a Word for Mac " .docm "
Whoa... the extensions mean something. Your original problem (document shows bold, italic, underline, but tables and other complex formatting are lost) sounds as though the document was being exported as a .RTF, a Rich Text Format file. If you save as a .DOCM, that's a Word Macro Enabled Document. Regular Word 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011 docs are .DOCX. Regular Word 97 through 2004 docs are .DOC. You need to save that document as a .DOCX or a .DOC or you're gonna have problems later.
    - and the documents appear normal (though I had to switch one to 'Portrait' as it for some reason wanted to display in landsacpe.
Normally you'd have to select page orientation.
So, poor testing on my part. I have no idea which of the above steps fixed it but I'm guessing the 'Save As' to my version of Word.
If so, it would appear the 'Compatability' feature was not working at least on these two documents.
Word's compatibility feature is supposed to ensure that a document you produce is compatible with the target version of Word. If you turn the compatibility stuff on then you will be warned if you are using Word 2007 through 2011 and you use a feature that earlier versions of Word do not have. Microsoft shipped a translator which works with Office 2003 and 2004 and which allows Word 2003 or 2004 to read Word 2007, 2008, 2010, or 2011 documents (.DOCX) and to save them as Word 97 through 2004 documents (.DOC) _as long as they don't have any incompatible features_. Word's compatibility features doesn't do much for .RTFs or for .DOCMs.

  • Hiding icons in the Dock and 'Word for Mac'

Hi, I'm new to macs and I'm struggling a little with some of the simpler tasks! I've put Word for Mac Student Edition on my Macbook but can you tell me how I can delete a word document once I've created it? I can't seem to find 'delete.' Also, can somebody help with hiding some of the icons in the dock. I've got loads and I know I won't use many of them.
    Thanks for your help!
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thanks for your quick reply! I don't have a right or left click on my Macbook just the mousepad and one bar that runs across the bottom of the pad, It makes no difference if I press the left or right hand side of it, it just keeps initialising the applications.
I've tried dragging the document to the trash can but that won't work either! Should I be pressing a command key before hand?
Sorry, I must have been more entrenched in windows-working than I thought....

  • Zoom default in Word for Mac

I just got Word for Mac recently. Whenever I open a document, the text is tiny. The zoom is set at 100%, but that's too low for comfortable reading/typing. (Now I know why my Mac-using friends always sent me Word documents set at 125% zoom!) I am wondering, is there any way to set the zoom defaults so that all documents will always open at a higher zoom level? Or do I have to increase the zoom manually every time I open a document?
mutters NeoOffice never had this problem...

I have Office X and I assume the later version works the same. I open a new Word document, manually set the zoom to 200 percent (for my wide-screen 22" flat-panel monitor) type some gibberish, and then save. After that, new documents opened with the keyboard shortcut command-n pop up at the same magnification. Using the "New..." command from the file menu does not also preserve the magnification.

  • Equation editor in word for mac 2011

I apologize if this is straying too far from elements of the Lion discussion but
I have seen others compliment the capability of the equation editor in Word for Mac 2011. It's icon is
at the right end of the Document Elements toolbar.
But in my version of this software the icon is greyed out and unavailable. Any insight or comments?

Thanks quicksilver8 - turned out eqation editor was greyey out because
my file was opened in "compatibility mode" - when I open a file in ".docx" mode
    the equation editor is available.

  • ASCII Codes in WORD for Mac

    When writing WORD documents on a PC, I am a frequent user of mathematical symbols:  § (alt 21), ½ (alt 171), α (alt 224), ß (alt 225), π (alt 227), Σ (alt 228), σ (alt 229), µ (alt 230), τ (alt 231), Θ (alt 233), Ω (alt 234), δ (alt 235), φ (alt 237), ε (alt 238), ± (alt 241), ≥ (alt 242), ≤ (alt 243), ÷ (alt 246), ≈ (alt 247), ° (alt 248), ∙ (alt 249).  These symbols are easy to insert into a document on a PC with a numeric key pad; all the user needs to do is press the [ALT] key and key in the two or three digit numeric code.
I am well aware of the onerous method of inserting these characters into a WORD document by navigating through multiple menus and searching for the symbol needed.  I am looking for a quick and simple way for inserting these ASCII characters (like the PC method of pressing [ALT] and then keying a three digit number code into the keypad).   Is there a short cut in WORD for Mac for inserting the ASCII characters as described above?  I am new to Mac and am hoping there is an efficient shortcut for inserting these ASCII symbols.

Use the keyboard viewer (just once, as instructed here):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13746
Depress the "Option" key while the keyboard viewer is visible, and you will see the keyboard translation for many of the symbols you are looking for.  For example, a "Pi" symbol can be generated by clicking Option-p.

  • Swapping between windows in Word for Mac 2011?

I've just installed Word for Mac 2011 on my new Mac Mini, and somehow the Command+` keyboard shortcut for switching between open Word windows is not working anymore. I've tried to find the answer online, but everyone states to use Command+`, which is exactly what's not working anymore for me. Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks!

    Hi there,
Thanks for the response. I guess my request wasn't clear: what I was trying to indicate is that the very thing you are suggesting is not working. One important note though is: you mention Command + Tilde, which would mean the key sequence would have to be Command/Shift/Tilde-key, and it appears that the support page you linked indicates that also. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to work either in my Word app (it does work with other apps, so either Command + ` (accent grave) and Command + Shift + ~ works to switch between windows.  On all of the Macs that I have owned so far, the keyboard shortcut to switch between windows in the open app is Command + ` (accent grave, i.e. same key as the tilde, but used without Shift). This currently works just fine between windows of any app (Chrome, Safari, Finder), but not with Word. It's driving me nuts! Any other suggestions of what may be causing this (and how to fix it?).
    Many thanks!
    Elena

  • Why does word for mac 2011 error

When I am using the word for mac that came installed on my Mac Book Pro, it frequently errors and has to close and I loose my work.  Even though I choose the option to send the report and recover my work, i have lost many things.
    Why does this happen?

To my knowledge, Apple does not supply MacBook Pros with MS Word installed.
Pls specify exactly what app and what version you are talking about. If it is really MS Word, then it's possible it wasn't correctly installed. You should re-install MS Office, and then update it, if applicable.

When I try to send an attachment using Word for MAC people have a hard time opening it with a PC. Can I do anything different?

shldr2thewheel already sent a teach-yourself way. Perhaps you could be more specific: any .doc file written in Mac OS is opened with difficulty? what version of Office on mac and what version in windows? any format, e.g. .doc or .rtf? Even a simple rtext of, say, 2-3 pages? or only long docs, e.g. 100 pages or more? what language is used? English or any other West European, Latin based text, or other scripts too? What do you understand by ‘people have a hard time opening it with a PC?’ takes a very long time? or does not open at all? etc. etc.

  • Why can't I save something in Word for Mac?

When I try to save something to Word for Mac, it says that the HD if full.  It's not.  I've only had my computer for a year and I can't save anything to a flash drive either.  Help, please!

I clicked on the HD and it said that I had 203.58 GB available, Capacity is 499.25 GB.   Format is journaled.
Once I decided to save it as a .docx file, it let me (but my computers at school are so old, I can't open them there.)  When this wouldn't work the other night, I ended up rebooting it and it worked.  Unfortunately, it did it again today.
It says that it's only 393 KB so it's not too big.
