Re AppleMan 1958 excellent user tip: How can I import a homemade DVD into iMovie for editing? -
I've followed instructions with success until  "You can then FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME and choose Apple Intermediate Codec as your video codec. "  How do I do that?
I installed MGEG Streamclip 193b8 and used their utility to install quicktimempeg2 and got a message stating it was successfully installed.  (I'm on latest Maverick 10.9.2 on iMac)  Then I dragged the VIDEO_TS file from my home DVD into the streamclip app.  It asked which of 4 files to use, and I selected the first one.  Streamclip played the video with the sound.  so far so good. but now I cannot figure how to use quicktime player 10.3 to export this vob file out of streamclip.

Thank you for your quick reply and for clearing up my confusion.  I'm exporting the first section now.  I choose the smallest size, 3x4 but I'd prefer to go higher as this DVD was originally a VHS home movie.  I'm wondering if after three conversions (VHS,->DVD->MPEG) the resolution will be so poor as to not support a larger size frame?  If it can, what size should I select when I export?

  • How do I import a personal DVD into iDVD for editing and copying

I am running 10.9.5. I see that I have 2.66 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of memory
Do I have enough power on this machine to even do what I want to do?
I have several DVD's of home movies that have been digitized.
The files on the DVD list Video_rm and Video_ts. I see a place to import this DVD, but I am not able to select both folders to import at the same time.
What do I need to do in order to edit these home movies on my computer?
    thanks,

Here is how I do it, with no quality loss that I can see. (And I'm picky.)
Use Cinematize 2, I use it with iMovie 06 (and a few times with iMovie 11) and iDVD 11. It has several modes of converting the data. One mode is called "lossless".
    http://www.amazon.com/Miraizon-10121201-Cinematize-2-Mac/dp/B0006AAO96/ref=cm_cr _pr_pb_t
    I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09 - 11, why?
iMovie 09/11 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.

Cinematize 2 + iMovie 06 + iDVD 09/11 works great for me.
Use Professional Quality in iDVD, good for 2 Hrs on a single layer DVD, 3 Hrs 45 Mins on a Dual layer DVD. I use DVD+Rs only.

  • How can I import from homemade DVD to iMovie ?

In converting VHS to DV in iMov I use the original 1988 camcorder for obvious tracking reasons. However, I have one tape that was left in the hot sun on my dashboard and, no surprise, is very flaky, but only in camcorder playback. This happened years ago and I had to transfer the (tape only) into a new cartridge. And since I was playing back from a newer VCR it did as well as could be expected. Then last year I put all my VHS tapes onto DVD thru a Panasonic HD/DVD recorder. Since my homemade DVD has no copy protection why can't I import into iMovie? My only other option is to copy from Panasonic to DV tape and then import to iMov and I worry about quality losses with only S video coupling. All my tapes went to HD and DVD in XP mode (1 hour per DVD).

    Hi,
See this thread: QuickTimeKirk, "copying dvd to imovie project" #1, 08:53pm Oct 9, 2005 CDT
You'll need to convert the dvd back to a form iMovie can import, details are in that discussion. Hope that helps.

  • How to? importing non-encrypted DVDs into iMovie

new to Macs - my Sony digital video camera does not have a Firewire port. I'm thinking of having my mini DV tapes of my son converted onto DVD. Does anyone know of a way to get DVDs imported into iMovie? Is there a better way than converting my mini DVs to DVD?

Yes. iLink is Sony's name for FireWire.
I'm pretty sure your camera has it, though it probably did not come with the cable.
    The cable you want is a 4 to 6 pin FireWire Cable such as this one;

No need to buy a Sony branded one.

  • How do I get a dvd into iMovie for editing?

I want to edit my teaching videos. They are on DVDs. How do I get them into iMovie as all the tutorials I have seen only speak of loading from a camera?

    http://www.fcpbook.com/Video6.html
This should help. Rather than using DV which iMovie doesn't handle well for no earthly reason, you should substitute the Apple Intermediate Codec, which may give you better results.
DVDs are very heavily compressed standard definition media, so converting it will not make it any better.

    Hi Barbara
Are your photos in iPhoto or are you using some other Photo Software?
The latest version of iPhoto is a lot different than iPhoto 6 for example. In iPhoto 06 you could burn the Originals from your User Picture Folder using Finder, while in iPhoto 11 it is best to burn them from within the iPhoto Application.
Open iPhoto and select the Event(s) that you want to burn onto the CD, then select Share on the menu bar and click Burn in the drop down.
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphoto/
Then again, maybe you got a bad batch of blank CD's and need to try another?

  • How to transfer your home movie from DVD  to imovie for Editing?

How to transfer home movie already on a DVD to IMOVIE for editing & enhancement.

Simple idea-but not always easy. Get a dvd ripping program (or find a trialware version of one). Insert dvd. Rip DVD. save dvd as either DV or MP-4.Open with iMovie. Fiddle around,VLC might be helpful??

  • Have converted old VHS to DVD, now how do I get that into iMovie for edit?

Hi, I am a little of a novice, and am not sure how to get a regular DVD movie imported to iMovie ... is more conversion needed? I get iMovie to look into the VIDEO_TS folder on the DVD and it doesn't recognize any files.... I hope I haven't wasted money with all those conversions!!!

    1) Download and install the Apple MPEG2 QuickTime Component ($20) - available online from Apple.
    2) Download and install MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 (free).
    3) Start MPEG Streamclip
    4) Insert your DVD into your Mac. If DVD Player or Front Row starts automatically quit those.
    5) Open a Finder window. Navigate to your DVD to the Video_TS folder.
    6) Drag the .VOB files from the Video_TS folder and drop then into MPEG Streamclip.
    7) If MPEG Streamclip offers to fix timecode breaks, say yes.
    8) Use FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME to convert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec (or h.264 if you prefer)
9a) Optional: You can deinterlace your footage in this step, if you like
9b) optional: If you know the date and or time of the footage, name your file
    clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss
(let mpeg streamclip provide the extension). This will provide metadata that iMovie will use to put the event in the right year and month.
9c) Optional: If you don't want to make one huge clip out of your DVD, you can make smaller clips by using MPEG Streamclip. Move the cursor to the "in" point of the clip, and press i. Move the cursor to the "Out" point of the clip, and press o. Then do steps 8 through 10 and repeat until you have done this for all clips you want.
    10) Save the resulting file in a place where you can find it, like your Desktop.
    11) Open iMovie.
    12) In iMovie, choose FILE/IMPORT/From File and choose the file you saved in steps 8, 9, 10.
    13) iMovie will generate thumbnails and you can edit.

  • File export using quicktime conversion quit!!!

I am trying to export a 3 minute film and I have just downloaded flip4mac studio as my client needs it in wmv format. I exported the film yesterday to a quicktime format, so they could watch it online. But today, after i downloaded flip4mac studio when I click on file > export > using quicktime conversion the whole of fcp just quits! when i click on file > export > quicktime movie it is fine, it just seems to be when i click on quicktime conversion. What is going on, it was fine yesterday!!!

  • I have been trying to import old family dads into iMovie. I receive the following message "None of the selected files or folders can be imported"

I have been trying to import old family dvd's into iMovie. I receive the following message "None of the selected files or folders can be imported" Is there a problem with the format not being recognized by Imovie? Same home dvd's work on internal dvd player. Any Ideas?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
If you are running Lion or later:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion even though that has it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • How do I import my iPhoto library into iMovie?

For some unknown reason I am not able to import all my pictures and video clips into iMovie. I do not know what is happening to my Mac. What did I do to it ? I still have plenty of storage space on my laptop. I have a Mid 2012 13" Macbook Pro running Mavericks OS X 10.9.4. I almost forgot to mention that iMovie quits unexpectingly when I am in the middle of a video project. Thanks in advance for any help.

There is no way you would import an iPhoto Library into iMovie. What you can do is access the Library from iMovie.
So, what exactly are you trying to do, and what goes wrong? What error messages do you get? What version of iMovie and iPhoto?

  • Importing mp4 into iMovie for editing

I am using iMovie 08 and I want to import my mp4 movies from iTunes into iMovie to edit. Can this be done?

    Hi
iMovie and iDVD has a very limited amout of Video-Codecs they can use
They don't report when they fail. Even if import to Event's is no guarantee
,mov - is no Video-CODEC - it is a container (sort of folder)
QuickTime-player can open so many more. Open Your .mov here.
Then open Inspector [ cmd + I ] and read
    - Video formatted (CODEC) as : nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
    - Frames per Second : YY.yy fps
    What does they say ?
