Re-using old phones

There is more computing power in even a basic mobile than was used to put man on the moon (they mostly used slide rules).
It occurs to me that they could be put to use in a variety of applications as remote controlling or monitoring devices.  Indeed, I believe they already are: terrorists use them to set off bombs (at least they do on CSI); I was thinking of more constructive uses.
However, there are two problems that I see (with applications I have in mind).  One is battery life, and the other is in/output.
For the first, there are various workarounds, but one that I would like to impement is that I would like it to switch on automatically as soon as it gets power. You could create a circuit that sends a pulse into the phone as if the on button had been pressed, but I wondered if there was a way of simply reprogramming the phone to do it itself.
The second problem is about external triggers: for example, you might want the phone to respond to an external event (e.g. call you when the door opens), or you might want to be able to call the phone and cause it to trigger an external event.
Most phones have some sort of external connector (e.g. to connect to the computer with), but I haven't the first clue about how you might use this.  Where might I be able to obtain such information?

You'll probably get some good pointers from the people on nokia's developers forum. They deal with all aspects of programming there.

  • I tried to sync my iPhone with iTunes, was asked if i wanted to use old phone or new.  I pressed old and lost  recent photos and apps.  what can i do to undo this mess

An update was requested in my iphone settings to sync my iphone with itunes.  In my attempt to do this, I chose to sync with my old phone and lost all recent photos and apps.  Is there any way to reverse this mess and retrieve what I had?

So, what i need to is
    1. Check my iphone backup first if avaiable
    2. Do ' restore ' my iphone at itunes
    Is it correct?
After i do all of this, what is the next step? Is it
    1. Just plug in back my iphone and itunes will automatically sync asking to use a backup ipnone?
    Or need to do manually?
Make me confuse is, if i do all the step as previous mention, but pc still recognize my iphone as a ipod everytime i plug in into itunes.
How if i in pc dont have my iphone backup ? Because since first time plug in into itunes, i was used the ipod backup?
Sorry to ask too much since i really need help from your guys

  • Apple ID uses old phone number

    iPhone 6 16 GB / OS 8.1.1
Hey, I've been with apple for quite a while now, and I've never had iMessage or Facetime using my phone number because of this bug. A little while ago, I visited family in a different country, I had a temporary number there. That number somehow worked with iMessage even though my previous number didn't. I decided to switch to my old sim card to see if the iMessage problem was fixed, to my surprise, it was. I went back to my temporary number for the time being until I went back home. When I got home I put in my old sim card to use my phone again and saw that my temporary number was trying to be activated and used in iMessage and Facetime. I have tried multiple things to try and resolve this issue or even just try to see what could be causing it but I've had no success. I recently tried making a brand new apple ID and using it to see if the temporary number would still show up, oddly enough, it did. After that happened I've just blanked, I'm confused as to where the number is stored and how I could go about updating it.
I've always wanted to use iMessage and Facetime with my phone number so any help would be great.
    Thanks.

    Turn iMessage & FaceTime off.
    Restart your iPhone.
    Turn iMessage & FaceTime on.
Your iPhone number, if your carrier supports those features, will associate to iMessage & FaceTime.

  • How to use old phone on another line after upgrade?

Let's say that I've 2 lines, one with iPhone 4 and another with iPhone 5. If I upgrade the iPhone 5 to iPhone 6, how can I replace the iPhone 4 on the other line with the now extra iPhone 5?

Get a new SIM card for the iPhone 5 (they're free at your local Corporate Verizon store or by calling Customer Service).  You can then activate it on-line via your MyVerizon account if you're the Account Owner and logged in as such.

I have bought an used Iphone 5. I dont have the password for the existing login id of the old owner. How do i use the phone and change the log in id?

Unfortunatly the only way that you can get it off is to get the old user to input the password.  You may need to contact that old user and see if he can put the old password in.  hope this helps.

  • Can i use itunes to sync my iphone with another iphone. Both phones are iphone 4, I would like to recreate my old phone in my one. in other words; transfer my pictures, texts, contacts, notes ect onto my newer phone.

hi, I have 2 iPhone 4 and i would like to transfer all of my documents and data, contacts, apps ect ect from my old phone to my new iPhone 4.
Essentialy I would like to recreate my old phone on the new one. (older phone is scratched). I have a different phone number, and different i tunes account associated with each phone but I have no problem with changing the i tunes account on the new phone back to the account I had on the old one.
I have done back ups in the past of my old phone, using i tunes and I would like to apply the backed up information to my new phone. How would I do this?
Can I restore device A onto device B?  Also wondering what sort of information or files might not transfer?
    Thanks!

The following link has instructions on how to transfer to a new device using iTunes (see the section below the "Use iCloud backup" section: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109

  • How to get pics from old phone to new phone using iCloud.

I just got the iPhone 5s and I used to have a 4. I backed up my pictures and contacts but the only thing that's on my new phone is my contacts. My old phone won't come back on. I need my pictures off of my old phone. My new phone says I don't have enough iCloud storage to backup. When I go to settings, iCloud, storage and backup, it lists my old phone and my new one. I don't know how to get my pictures back.

You have to use the other account or turn on sharing.

  • HT3406 If I choose "restore from iTunes backup" to move everything from old phone.  Will I still be able to use the old phone for music and apps?  Can the old phone be docked up to the computer?  Or will the new and old phone overwrite each other in some

If I choose "restore from iTunes backup" to move everything from old iphone to a new one, will I still be able to use the old phone for music and apps?  Can the old phone be docked up to that same computer every now and then?  Or will the new and old phone overwrite each other in some way?  In other words, are the two phones treated as different devices when the "restore" option is used to set up the new phone?   Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can use the old iPhone as an iPod touch.

  • Now that I have a 3 GS, how do I keep using my old phone as an ipod?

    Hi all,
I bought a 3GS the day they came out and have been using it exclusively, but I still have my original iphone and decided there was no reason not to let my kids use it as an ipod. It was working fine, they could get online with the wifi in our house, they could listen to music, etc, but tonight I tried to synch it on my computer to add a few new things to it and now it won't do anything but tell me it has no sim card.
I don't want to use the old iphone as a phone, I just want to use it as an ipod. I paid six hundred bucks for it two years ago, and see no reason why it should be useless now just because I bought a 3GS.
Can someone tell me how to get it usable as an ipod again? As I said, right now as soon as I turn it on it tells me there is no sim card and won't let me do anything and if I try to synch it, itunes tells me the same thing and says it can't activate it. If there was some way to tell itunes I don't want to activate it as an iphone, that would be great, but I can't seem to find one.
Thanks in advance for whatever help you can give.

Well, just got back from the AT&T store and my two older iphones are still competely unusalbe.
I explained the situation to the AT&T people and they were good about giving me two sim cards for my old phones. I took the cards home, put them in the phones, plugged my old phone in to try to synch, and itunes told me I had to register the phone first, and in order to do that I had to activate it/setup a phone plan. I don't want a phone plan for it. It's a perfectly good peice of hardware that I want to use as an ipod. Unfortuneately as soon as I cancel out of setting up a phone plan, it tells me to disconnect the iphone without allwoing me to synch.
I love the iphone, but I'm getting a really, really bad impression of Apple as a company. I shouldn't be having any difficulty at all in using either my wife's or my old iphone as an ipod -- we paid twelve hundred bucks between the two just two years ago -- but Apple has seemingly built in a failure mode that was activated the first time I tried to synch them after upgrading to the 3GS. They are both completely useless now. I'm quite, quite angry.
Does anyone know how I can get my old phones to synch again so that they'll do anything? I've tried with the sim and without the sim. I even tried taking the sim from my 3GS and putting it in my old phone just to synch my old phone, but my old phone wouldn't recognize it.
If anyone knows, I'd appreciate the help. Apple makes it just about impossible to get help out of them.
Like I said, I'm starting to get a very bad impression of Apple as a company. Now when I think about that Apple commercial that makes fun of Microsoft's customer service I have to think what in the heck are they talking about? At least I can call or email Micrsoft without having to jump through a thousand hoops and dig through page after page trying to find contact info. At least Microsoft's primary help network isn't reliant on customers helping other customers so that they (Microsoft) don't have to get involved.
    Ok, I'm ranting now.

I recently created a new apple ID
    Bad idea.
Content bought with an Apple ID is forever associated with that Apple ID. Apple will not transfer content from one Apple ID to another and Apple will not merge Apple IDs. Unless you are prepared to forfeit all the previously purchased content and buy it all again with the new Apple ID, you will need to maintain the old ID to update and redownload your content.

  • HT4972 I tried to update my old iPhone 3GS and is giving me a message that it can be activated. This is my old phone and it shouldn't have a line but I Still like to use it as an iPod. What can I do.

I tried to update my old iPhone 3GS and is giving me a message that it can be activated. This is my old phone and it shouldn't have a line but I Still like to use it as an iPod. What can I do.

Activation issues are almost always the result of a device that has been hacked or jailbroken. If that is the case, no support can be provided here.

An Apple pop up keeps coming up anytime I try and use my phone and it has an old Apple ID and it is asking for the password. How do I get it to stop?

That means there is content on your phone...music and or apps...originally obtained using his Apple ID. Such content is forever tied to the account used to originally obtain it and cannot be transferred to another Apple ID. Your only choice is to identify and delete this content.

  • Updated to iOS 8 and it asked for an old appleID that I no longer have, nor do I have the information to login.  I cannot use my phone now.

I recently updated to the iOS 8.  I have an iphone 5.  My phone states that the update is almost finished.  I just need to provide the password to my apple ID.  However, the apple ID its asking for is no longer being used.  For the life of me, I can't remember what that password was.  It offers me the option of skipping the step, and when I choose that option, it basically just resets and I start from the beginning again.  I then try to reset the password by try clicking "Forgot my Password"  When I try resetting it by email, I don't receive any of the emails that prompt the password change.  When I choose security question, it asks my birthday and the birthday I type in doesn't work.  I am unable to use my phone, other than receiving calls.  I made an appointment with the Apple Store, but I really can't wait until Friday to use my phone.  HELP

Not an answer: similar problem. Some time ago the email address service that was my apple id was take from the market, so I had to introduce a new one on my Iphone 4S, Mac air and Ipod. I was able to do so on the other devises, but the iPad doesn't allow me, I go into the same vicious circle: I can only get a new ID if I can enter, which I only can if I enter in the old ID, which password is not working (I cannot imagine where it went wrong), to get a new password I either get it sent to the old email account which does not exist anymore, or with my birthday security answer which is denied (very strange, I do remember my birthday, I swear). So.......... anyone more clever then me (or Bignickel)? HELP
