Re visit the  64$ question

From my pervious posts, which were dutifully answered, thank you, I have another question.
ran ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi
and it returns an "EFI64"
so I have the ability to run in 64 bit mode great the "bit-terbaun" awaits!
but wait... In system profiler under "software" 64-bit kernel & ext = No; okay, no problem I didn't use the 6-4 keys at boot, so it's reporting that I'm only using the default settings.
However, the buzz kill is when I select software > applications: I see a number of applications, including iphoto, Aperture, GIMP and even iTunes say "no" in the 64-bit (intel) column. Does this mean if I boot in 64 bit mode this applications will not run or will they still function but not take advantage of the 64bit architecture / speed performance??

32 and 64 bit applications will run fine when the Mac Pro booted in 64-bit mode.

I DO remember them but Apple chose to put them in Japanese and I can not change the language on Manage my Apple ID so I do not know if I made an error ,it threw me off , it was the wrong question Where did you fly to on your first Aiplane trip ? then I was unable to enter until 8 hours then called Apple Japan 4 times each time threy asked me would you like to speak with an English speaker,I said yes then they told me sorry today is Sunday no English speakers ,but they refused to speak Japanese, then I called 5th time and a kind guy could speak English we were on 1and 1/2 hours he got me to log in but the reset key chain could not be completed still pending.
He said do not mess with that ! then I got a text from somewhere to reset 4 pins suddenly it was very strange I said to him that I got this pin this morning but it said you can use maximum 3 hours it had a UK number and I told him I do not like this and will not enter the code he said do not do it if it is from the UK and then I said to him ok you did a lot to help but we can not go any further ! and we cut of I went back to my computer to re do the ID but I found everything a mess so I call and a stupid sounding Japanese women with a squeaky voice came on I was calm at first and they want your phone number your IMEI number your iPhone serial number date of birth Address email address it takes 10 munutes to check then they ask what are you caling about so I try to explain my keychain is broken or problems with language security questions and can not change my pasword because the security question have failed me so it is ONE BIG HEADACHE AND I START I GET STRESSED she says Do want an ENGLISH speaker ,I say yes ,that guy i talked to earlier but I never got his name and first time I ever talked to him but they said he is not here so I said ok and then she said today is sunday so call back in the morning ,I said ,well ok in Japanese but they make you feel stupid because they do not want to speak Jap@anese with none natives and they are to busy,And they feel that I should not bother them ,then I say that Apple Japan is trying to refuse Apple foreign customers and then she wants to hang up and ask me to visit the shop ,but they are the same I have a very bad time with Apple Japan since they do not discuss software problems or security with customer meaning if you have a problem they ask you to come on a time 20 minutes max so they do hardware test and say you phone is fine then I say no I can not reset my ID they say you must call call centre so I am going around in circles ,When I call English it is usually Australia so if my problem is in Japan surely if do not want me to talk to them in Japanese and they ask me to call Australia but every time my call charge is expensive after asking them is this free because I have Apple care they say yes but when the call goes to Australia 0120 277 535 it might change to paid call so I call then I have to ask is this charging they say we can not give you that information ! so what can I do I have have been at the computer and phone all day on my day off work and in tre week I am so busy and can not use my phone I can not work without it ,this new technology for you ,they can not cope with the fact that the customer have problems yet they do not want to deal with us because they can not solve it and so it shows them to be useless they like to walk around in their cool tee shirts and retro shop but when it comes to functionality we are unwelcome they got the money so do not return because apple is perfect that nothing should go wrong .
But it does somehow my English security answers do not work on a Japanese Question especialy if I did not choose that question I set  up the multiple choice In English and wrote the answers in English or Roman and set them langauge preferences in English, do you really think you can correctly write english name or word in Japanese they write a police patrol car  pato caa パトカア they do not have r and l .So it is my choice to make my security easy for me and as difficult for others to hack. But they also have patororoo choo meaning ' now patrolling ' so why they have pato caa patrol car and patoro patrol and have thousands of Chinese words kanji they can find patrol.
I am getting off the topic but I am at a loss to fix this problem when they hold the keys and i have all the info to verify my ID.

  • How can I visit the performance tab when the target DB is down?

    Hi, All:
I wonder if it is possible to visit the performance tab when the target DB is down. I thought it should be possible. But whenever I first click the performance tab, I will be asked to enter the user/passwd for the target db(I have set the preferred credentials).
Furthermore, is it possible to analyze the history sql/performance if the target db is not startup? and how can I do it?
    Thanks in advance

I have seen other postings by the same ID and my suggestion is that you have a look at the Enterprise Manager Documentation Library. After that, you can ask questions relating to subjects you cannot solve with the documentations.

Can you elaborate the question? I assume that you are looking for some sort of mechanism to validate a customer's web site?
Regardless of the scenario, the way to validate or retrieve a value from an external web site is to write a plugin that executes a WebRequest to the external site and reads the response.

  • Reinstalling the OS - Questions

I have a few questions about reinstalling OSX. First off, let me list some of the "issues" I'm facing on a daily basis.
When I first boot my computer in the morning, it can take up to 5 min. before it is running smooth enough to be operable, but once that time has passed, and after I log in and run programs for the first time, it runs perfectly.
My second problem is how long the actual boot process takes. From the time I push the power button to the time when I'm presented with the screen to log in has more than doubled since May of last year when I purchased my machine. This may be due to the installation of Boot Camp (which I have since removed).
Another issue I've had for a while, although I can't be sure when it first started, pertains to the wireless card, or Air Port. I've switched wireless routers two times hoping to fix the problem, but that mustn't be the problem as it has been persistent throughout. I am running off of a secured wireless network, if that matters. The actual problem is that the Air Port stops working all together when my computer wakes from sleep, no matter how short the sleep period is. I can't get any signal at all, as opposed to when it's in working order, I get anywhere from 5-8 signals. And still other times, I'll lose the signal from only the network which I am currently connected (i.e. unsecured neighbors).
And lastly (I know, sorry! Thanks for reading this far!) I've been having weird random problems with Finder and other OSX apps. These problems are mostly cosmetic, such as icons for files being wrong. An example is for MP3 files. Their icon shows Quicktime, but when double clicked (or opened any other way) they open in iTunes, the assigned app. These type of problems don't bother me as much, but are still fairly annoying. And yes, I'm aware that I can manually change the icons back to iTunes icons, but it would be extremely time consuming, and as I already said, the problems just are that bad.
Well, I guess the point of this post is to ask what are some of the risks/problems known with reinstalling the OS. One concern I have stems from somthing I read somewhere saying that the iLife suite that came free with my computer, already installed, would be lost and I would have to buy a copy to get the apps back. Is this true?
Any help would be appreciated greatly. Thanks.

17" iMac Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.5GB ram

I wholly concur with David's advice on maintenance. Here's mine:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values.

  • No emails unless we visit the thread

I was getting somewhat tired of so many emails, particularly from this forum but now Adobe has gone & done it.
These notices indicating the title & "to read this message you must visit the forum" just don't get it for me. I'd rather have the dozens of messages. Not only do I have to depend on what can be cryptic subject titles to determine if I'm interested but my rules no longer work to direct the messages out of my main mailbox into folders.
I guess I'll just have to unsubscribe from the forum. If this happens with certain of the other forums I'm a member of there will be a lot of unanswered questions since I'll no longer know about them and be able to help.

    Tom,
I understand this was an unintentional change and the problem is being worked on.

After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it. If you have not done this since the last firmware upgrade, please do this now.
If you need more help, you will need to tell us more details of your problems.
Please state the model and version of your router.

Also, describe exactly what is happening on your network when your system disconnects. Are all computers disconnected from the Intenet? Or only the wireless computers? What is running on the computers when your system crashes? a game? P2P software? other?
Also, please connect your computer directly to your modem. Verify that you can get a working Internet connection, then do the following:
Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig /all" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key. Post your results.

  • The Big question...

I am currently running windows XP, using a 20” Phillips flat screen as my monitor. I have no issues what so ever with this monitor using XP. I am running from the VGA out on my laptop (company PC, IBM) straight into my monitor. TV DVI is type DVI-I.
I want a Mac Mini!!! So… The big question is.. Will I be able to use this monitor? As stated above, I have no issues with XP. The Mini comes with a mini DVI to VGA adapter. Shouldn’t I be able to plug right into this adapter and go using the cable I already have?
    Thanks much!
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Indeed, given the presence of a VGA connector on the monitor and the DVI/VGA supplied with the mini, you should be able to plug the two things together and have them work with no problem. Unfortunately, without knowing the exact model of screen and there being someone posting here that has tried the same combination, it's impossible to tell you with absolute certainty that it will work - very high probability, but not certainty.
How readily the combination works depends to a great extent on whether the display outputs a standard signal which identifies it and the settings it requires, such that the mini can detect it. If it does, it'll work and offer you a range of suitable and compatible settings. If it doesn't, you may need to use a third-party utility such as SwitchResX - which isn't easy but many have used with success.
If the display also has DVI input, that's another option too of course.
