RE:  Volume shortage when transferring to itunes

Howdy,
I've been recording things and now when I transfer to itunes my maximum volume is a bit less than I would prefer.
When I play the composition in Garageband I get all the volume I need but once its tranferred to itunes it is somewhat less - I can hear it but I can't blast it. And some times I just want to shut the world out...
Where can I get that extra boost? Is it in my final mix? Should I mixdown my tracks and then send it to itues? Or is there some part of this send process where I can boost the levels.
Thanks,
J

Assuming you've already made sure that iTunes' various "enhancements" are turned off, then yes, what you're looking for is the FInal Mix, the Mastering Phase.
This is a topic much to complex to teach in a forum post (search the web for "mixing and Master), but generally consists of using Compression, Peak Limiting, and/or EQ.

  • How can I get all music "tags" to transfer when transferring an iTunes library?

OK, here's my situation:  I have accumulated about 250GB of music on iTunes on a laptop running Windows 7.  The hard drive was running out of room, and I wanted to upgrade computers.  So I bought a Mac Book with 1TB of hard drive space.
To transfer my library (which includes about equal parts iTunes purchases and imported CDs), I copied the entire iTunes folder onto an external hard drive, and then used the "add folder" function on iTunes to add the entire library to my new computer.  I knew I would lose all data such as last played, most played, etc.  And I knew from past experience that merely transferring the iTunes folder, including the iTunes library file, to the new computer hard drive (without using the "add folder to library" function) would not mean that the new computer would automatically behave as if the exact same library from the old computer was on the new computer.  I hope I am explaining this right.
My problem/question is: many of the music files came over without some of the tags that were on the files in the old computer.  This happened with respect to some, but not all, of the imported CD files.  (I had used the MP3 format when I ripped these.)  The song titles are still there, but many of the tracks say "unknown album" for that artist or, worse, just say "unknown album" AND "unknown artist."  Because I have accumulated so much music over the years, it would take me quite a while to re-tag all he music files with all the missing info.   Again, I'm lucky to have the files, and my iPods containing the music have not yet been synced to the new computer, so I could just manually check what I had on the old iPods and re-add/re-tag the files that were problems.  I  know having such a large folder could itself be the problem.  But adding folders to the computer one at a time does not seem to help, as the "unknown" issue keeps happening even then.
So my conclusions are that one of the following has happened:  either there is another way to import a large library that I should try (Apple migration assistant, maybe?), or I somehow made the transfer from the old computer onto the external hard drive in the wrong way and I'm stuck with things as they are (which would not be terrible, just inconvenient) or there is some limitation in the software of music services that results in many "unknowns" showing up.  These were not obscure records, and iTunes/Gracenote recognized 99% of them just fine when I imported them, but I remember from using Windows Media Player that it was pretty hit-or-miss at times in terms of the right tags being assigned to songs.
Yes, I probably have spent way too much time over the years on my music.  But if there is something I can learn from this, I'd be happy to hear about it, either to fix things easily now or the next time I transfer music.  (Again, all the files had all the correct tags on my old computer, before I copied them.)  I thank anyone who replies very much, in advance!

Just to update: the solution above works.  I had tried to "import" all my files into the new computer rather than just copying and pasting the old iTunes folder into the new computer.  This second, easier, solution is much, much better than re-importing all the songs.  Seems like those little files included in an existing iTunes folder are very, very important!  Without them, I would have had hundreds and hundreds of "unknown" files to re-tag.  As it was, when I copied and pasted the existing iTunes folder into the new computer and opened iTunes, all the files were there, complete with all the date added/date played/number of plays/etc. information from my old computer.  (For some reason, this didn't work when I transferred from PC to PC, but that was several years ago and not a transfer to a Mac.)  I did seem to lose album artwork for a number of albums I had imported rather than purchased, and there was other cleanup to do on a small percentage of files.  But that was a vry small amount of work compared to re-tagging from scratch.  Thanks again for your help.

  • Song Volume increases when bouncing to itunes

When bouncing a song from Logic Express 9 to itunes, the volume I set the output to is dramatically increased when added to Itunes. I set the stereo output track lower (set to -5.0) and the song still comes out as loud as the others. I even set it to -24 as an extreme case and I had the same increase in volume.
I tried turning off "Normalize" in the Bounce window but that didn't work.
It's really annoying me... the songs are acoustic and need to be heard softer on the album but I can't figure out how to bounce them at the volume I want and have them stay at that lowered volume.
If anyone has suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it, thanks!

    Hi,
perhaps you have set the function to adjust the volume of songs to the same level in iTunes itself? (Preferences - Playback - adjust volume- is it checked?)
Try to play back the song from the Finder's quickview if it is still too loud.
And/or maybe you have automated the output volume so that Logic automatically moves the fader back up during the bounce?

  • Higher volume level when bounced to iTunes

The volume level of a bounced, (completed) tune I send to iTunes is significantly higher than when it is in the Logic Express program and I am working on it. Is this because it is a 32-bit file concerting to 16-bit? Are 16-bit files louder? Is it because it is a "flattened" file? Is this normal behaviour? I am not complaining, as I have thought the levels in Logic are too low (well, significantly lower than a CD or purchased AAC file. Any enlightment would be appreciated.

    Hi,
perhaps, you have used the normalize checkbox of the bounce function. Normalizing raises (or lowers) the volume of a bounced file so that it's loudest peak is exactly at 0dbfs. So, a very soft song will probably be raised in volume. A song with loud peaks that exceed 0db may be lowered in volume. But you could also get inpredictable results, for instance, if you have an average soft song with one big peak, the whole song will be lowered in volume because of this one peak.
You can avoid these strange effects by incorporating a limiter plugin *as last plugin* in the stereo output channel from which every bounce is taken. In the limiter, raise the gain just enough to have a good signal that is just below 0db, and the limiter will cut off everything that eventually will peak above it.

  • IMovie 08 loses sound when transferred to iTunes

Sorry of this is a dumb question! I've made a movie in 08 and shared it with the media bar and iTunes. I've got the same problem as other people concerning purchased music not playing on the published movie. However I'm also getting jingles from iMovie's own resource pane refusing to play. Everything plays fine on preview but I get silence during some jingles - not all - and purchased music. As I synch my movies to Apple tv this makes Movie 08 pretty useless.
Any ideas why this might be happening or do I wait for Apple to fix the software it's sellign as an upgrade! Sorry to sound annoyed but thisis frustrating!

Appreciate the response...our situations are slightly different. I assumed from the thread that you were dealing with video that had to be converted. I am dealing with video purchased straight from iTunes and shouldn't need anything but uploading to the iPod.
My iPod plays the video from start to finish flawlessly yet silently. b stopped short of having me restore the iPod opting instead to have me upgrade the software (which didn't solve the issue).
I didn't know if b had any other ideas short of restoring the unit. It's been several days since I heard anything that is the reason for the new thread.

  • I have somehow lost an iTunes purchased song when transferring to iTunes to new computer

I have lost a song during an Itunes transfer from old computer to new computer.  I decided to just re-purchase it in itunes, but I am not able to because instead of "buy" it says "purchased".  How do I redownload this one song?

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not available in all countries; only apps, books (not audiobooks), music, and t.v. shows (not movies).  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list, or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
Select the store on the left side of iTunes.
Click on Purchased on the right side under Quick Links.
You can redownload your available previous purchases.

We need a bit more information to help.
Are you trying to update your iPhone using iTunes on your computer?  If so, did you make purchases through the iTunes Store or App Store on your iPhone, and fail to sync them with your computer?  That is the likely meaning of what you are seeing.  If this is true, the purchases would be added to iTunes in your computer before the upgrade proceeds.

From your statements above, it sounds like you never tried to burn a CD for at least the first year that you owned the laptop, as it had a one year warranty on it. While you might have used it frequently to install software,  play DVDs, Blu-Ray disks, etc, that's unclear from your statements. Nonetheless, it might just be dirty-dusty. So, before deleting-uninstalling any software, and given they're cheap, try a CD-DVD Cleaner Disk first and see if that resolves your problems.
Let us know what happens. Good luck.

I successfully transferred my itunes to another PC, when I click on most (not all) songs, it tells me to authorize the computer, I authorize it, it says this computer is already authorized, but when i click on a song, it tells me to authorize again. help

Are the songs authorised to the same account?
Often people change their e-mail address over time, and also decide to set up new iTunes account names using that e-mail.  You can (and should) continue to use an old e-mail address as your account name.  Then you don't run into the issue of having different songs authorised to different accounts.
To check the authorised account for the song, click "Get info" on the song name in iTunes.  It will show the account name in the Summary panel.
If you have set up multiple accounts, log into each one, and burn the songs to CD as audio tracks (i.e. like a normal CD, not a data CD).  You can then re-import the files into iTunes without the authorisation embedded into the song.

Before you connect any device to a new library go to the Devices tab of the the preferences panel via Edit > Preferences (Windows) or iTunes > Preferences (Mac) and ensure the box next to Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically is ticked. You can now safely connect the device to your computer without the danger of media being automatically deleted or overwritten.
To get all your content off your connect your iPad to your new computer.
Then use a 3rd party piece of software to transfer your content
I have found Senuti useful but there are others listed in the article I linked to in a previous post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
That will let you transfer your non purchased content
For Purchased content log in to iTunes on the new computer
In Itunes Store click on Purchased under the Quick Links section on the right.
Download any music by clicking on the cloud button

"I have just transferred my itunes account to a new computer and when i try to sync , I get a 'this ipod is synced with another itunes library ,do you want to erase this ipod and sync with this itunes library"
    Correct.
"will answering 'yes' erase what i currently have on my ipod"
    Yes.
If you copied everything from your old computer to your new one, as you should always do, then the content will be put right back when you sync.
"i'd like to get an ipad 3, if i cant sort out my account ,I'll get the galaxy note 10.1 !"
OK.  We are all itunes users like you. You threat of buying a different device means nothing here.

  • When transferring volumes to a new drive, is a cloning app better than the finder?

When transferring volumes to a new drive, is a cloning app better than the finder?
I’m adding a new (bigger) external hard drive.  I have created five partions on it as the old drive has.  Is it, better, faster, more accurate, etc. to use an app, or just drag and drop the folders on to the new partitions.  The sofware I have are; TechTool6, Drive Genius3 & SuperDuper.  Two of the partitons have a Mac OS on them.  The others just have files.
    Thanks,
    Larry

If the drive is to be functional as a boot drive then cloning is the better approach as it will grab all hidden configuration files and preserve the file access permissions properly; however, if you are setting up a data drive then the Finder's copy options should be adequate. To ensure file permissions are properly attributed to the copied files, select them and press Command-C to copy, followed by Shift-Option-Command-V to paste the items in the new location and preserve their file attributes (you may need to authenticate when copying them in this manner). If you do not need to preserve permissions then a basic drag-and-drop copy should suffice.

  • PC crashes when transferring songs to ipod or using itunes..

    1) Issue: When transferring songs to IPOD through the use of a PC(itunes or real player), a blue faulty screen will eventually show with some error and then my computer restarts. I have a bout 3800 songs for a 20GB IPOD and it seems to always stop around 4G when transferring. I tried using the IPOD on another computer and it seems to be fine.
    2) Also, when I play music using iTunes, it causes the PC to crash as well, without the IPOD connected.
During the error report, it usually says there is an error with the Hard Drive(Western Digital 250 SATA 2 hard drive; hard to use a jumper to adjust to the SATA 1 settings of this motherboards) and it couldn’t’ read it for a second. It advises to to a ScanDisk?CHKDSK run, but when I do this(during reboot), it stops in STEP 4 out of 5 at 20-30% and does nothing. Did this for 1 day! Other error reports supposedly report a faulty device driver error and advise to update drivers, but I’ve updates Apple iTunes.
Contacted Hard Drive manufacturer, Western Digital, and they believe it is a controller device driver issue or something related. Tried updating the bios. Tried installing the VIA 4 for 1 drivers and other drivers in the Motherboards Installation CD. Running a Disk Tools before Microsoft even shows itself, reports no errors. However, when you are partially booted and the computer is scheduled to check the disk, there are errors(won’t move.) I see no update for controller device drivers
A3) lso, if I have a USB hard drive connected to the PC(such as an IPOD or external usb hard drive), sometimes the computer switches boot devices(hard drives) and thinks that the IPOD/External Hard drive is the boot device. This is also reflected in the BIOS and the USB connected hard drive replaces my main SATA hard drive(western digital) and my computer doesn’t completely reboot unless I go under the BIOS and change it. It’s weird because I DO NOT CHANGE THE BIOS. For some reason, it changes on its own.
I have no idea what’s going on. Please Help Me.
