Re: Wireless Communications Switch

I have a Satellite A660 notebook on which recently for some unknown reason the wireless communications has been turned off. On powering up the machine, the wireless indicator does not light up, but the adaptor when seen via Device Manager is enabled.
Communications diagnostics tells me to turn on the "Wireless Communications Switch" but I can't find one - not on the front; not on the left side; not on the right side; not on the back nor anywhere else.
Am I stupid or blind or Both? How do I turn on the "Wireless Communications Switch"

The answer is I was both blind and stupid. Didn't realise the illuminated icon on the keyboard above the function keys was a push button

  • Satellite L600: How can I turn off the main Wireless Communication Switch?

Hello! Would be very grateful for any help....after struggling for 3 months I finally signed up here hoping to get some help.
    I have a new Satellite L600/ Win7 Home Premium.
My questions is that I can not find where the MAIN wireless switch is in order to turn wireless off COMPLETELY.
Everytime I start up, the wireless (orange) light switches on automatically.
I have to wait till start up finish and manually turn it off by Fn-F8.
When I open ConfigFree, (or Connectivity doctor), the diagnosis on the bottom left says [STATUS" Wireless Communication Switch: ON]
This tells me the main switch is somehow still ON.
I called Toshiba twice and they couldn't find it either.
They said the new versions of BIOS doesn't allow it...? And for this model there is no physical switch built on the PC itself.
I have looked everywhere and did the following:
    (1) Disable the adapter from Device manager.
    (2) In HWSetup, where there used to be an option to click the wireless switch off, it is not there anymore.
    (3) I went into BIOS setup and could find nothing remotely related to wireless/bluetooth to switch.
I'm just wondering why there is a laptop with wireless switch ON permanently? But if it's ON, there must be a way to switch it off. Press Fn-F8 every time on start-up is not a long term solution as risk is I'll forget one day).
As my last laptop was hacked before it is top priority that I know how to turn off ALL wireless function. So even if I have to do it via Commands, I will try it. Also, I'm not sure if anyone else experience the same with this model, or is this a defect in my particular PC?
Any help or same experience will be much appreciated, thank you.
I disabled the adapter in the device manager.
When I open ConfigFree, the Connectivity doctor tells me the Wireless Communication Switch: ON

Hi thanks for your replies! Sorry if I'm slow on the forum, at first I couldn't find where my thread went! Apparently it's moved to under Wireless. Is there alert message to let us know when my question is being moved?
Thanks Paolo30, I am glad to know that Fn-F8 is enough. when I check Network Connections, the Atheros adapter is 'disabled'. Sorry may I ask if WLan card you are talking about in device manager = Atheros adapter? (Despite reading furiously on books to patch up my ignorance on the wireless last few weeks, still not sure the difference between 'adapter' and 'card'... :) Are they the same thing?
Thanks Xardas. I checked the status in device manager and Atheros adapter is 'disabled'. I'm glad to know everything is ok if I see that! :) As my laptop was tampered wirelessly (and I don't know how they did it), I bought a new one and it's important for me to know it's 100% safe. Still, I want to tell Toshiba engineers it would be great to find out where this mysterious Switch is. It's not good to feel there is some sort of wireless capacity always ON and my PC may be emitting some wireless signals for serious baddies?

  • Tecra 9100 : Wireless / Bluetooth Switch

I have the above and when I press Fn + F8 I get a message on the screen.
"Wireless communication is disabled. Please turn on the Wireless communication switch."
When I try and install the Bluetooth Stack Drivers I get as far as the Installing Bluetooth driver....screen and after a bit of HD activity I get a message pop up.
"Could not turn Bluetooth power on. Please Turn on the Wireless Communication Switch located on the side of the main unit."
I think there is a problem with the switch on the front of the laptop. Am I right in my guess. Is it fixable. Can I fix it myself. Any other ideas.
    Thanks

Thanks for getting back to me. From what I can see the Laptop comes with Bluetooth and Wireless as standard, below is a link to my model
    http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/jsp/SUPPORTSECTION/discontinuedProductPage.do?PRODUCT_ID=42349&DISC_M ODEL=1&service=UK
I have no missing entries under Device Manager or errors or cautions. The Wireless card is listed under Network Adapters as
Toshiba Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card....located on Texas Instruments PCI-1410 CardBus Controller
and the Bluetooth is listed under System as
Bluetooth ACPI....located on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
I get a Network ICON in my system tray for the Wireless and when I choose refresh I get a message
No Wireless Networks were found in range.
Mark sure the Wireless switch is on your computer is on.
To see an updated list, click "Refresh Network list"
Now I know there is a network in range as I can pick up a Wireless router the other side of my street with my Nokia N95.

  • T420 wireless radio switch is ON but software insists it is off

My machine can't find my wireless network. When I run the troubleshooting it says "wireless radio switch must be turned on" and shows me a little diagram of the switch.
It always has been on, I never turn it off. I switched it on and off, then restarted, same error. I swear the mechanical switch is on, but the computer insists it isn't.

    Hi Michaelsmart,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m sorry to hear that Wifi is not working on ThinkPad T420.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 wireless communication has been disabled

"wireless communication has been disabled"---- on my office jet pro 8600. It says this on my printer screen. Please contact system admin. I can not wireless print from my laptop. I have to be plugged in by Ethernet to do it. Please help me set up my wireless feature. I have called twice and they told me its my computer. I'm running windows 7 and i just restored it to factory settings and have done all the necessary update and still same thing is stated. "wireless communication has been disabled" its on the printer screen when i try to connect. This printer is 3 weeks old. I was able to print one document using wireless function. Than next day i get the error message "wireless communication has been disabled"

Hello @ckilburg , welcome to the community
I read about the troubles you are having with setting up your Officejet 8600 on your wireless network, and I have some ideas that may help you.
    1. Restore the Network Defaults (On the printer select Setup, Network Menu, Restore Network Defaults, Yes, Restart the printer).
    2. Run the Wireless Setup Wizard from the front of the printer again from the same Network Menu.
    3. Once the printer is connected back to the network, assign a static IP to stabilize the wireless communication. This guide has the instructions on how to do that: Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection
    Good luck

  • May a recent i Mac be installed as the host computer for a wireless community

May a recent iMac be installed as the Host Computer for a wireless community. The present situation is; the iMac is subservient to the e Mac. I do not want to have two computers. I have one guest on the wireless.

There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. It works by you turning it on and then accessing the files on it from an app that you download on your iDevice. You can access music, movies, and other stuff. No connections or anything, it works like a WiFi connection, you connect to it from the setting on the iPad under wireless networks.
Then there is the Seagate GoFlex, which some would recommend over the Wi-Drive. But this one costs $199 and had 500 Gigabytes of storage. It works the sameway as the Kingston: no wires, runs over its wireless connection. You can actually fit up to 300 HD movies on it.

  • Re: Error Message: Wireless communication has been disabled - HP OfficeJet 4620

    HI,
i have the known error messge of 'Wireless communication has been disabled... contact administrator etc..'
I noticed that there is a solution sent by private messges that solves this (might be related to reseting the printer)
I will be glad to get this information please.
    Thanks

    Hello @AvnerLib,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're receiving a message "Wireless communication has been disabled, contact the Administrator". I will do my best to assist you. Before trying a reset on this printer, I would try these steps:
    1) Please follow this HP document on accessing the Embedded Web Server.
    2) On the side, click settings, then Administrator settings
    3) Under connectivity make sure everything has a check mark (Enabled)
If this doesn't work, then please let me know and I will assist you further.
    Cheers,

  • X305-Q705 Wireless communication light blinking

Has anyone come across the wireless communication amber LED blinking while the computer is turned off and shut down?  I do mean shut down, not asleep, hibernating, etc.  It only does this if the power adapter is plugged in.  It makes no difference if I remove the battery or not.  If I remove the power supply and leave in the battery it stops.  Any suggestions?  I appreciate any and all suggestions.  Thanks

I'm trying to set up a new HP Officejet 6100. The installer disk is no help, since I'm using a new MacBook Pro. I thought I installed the software, but perhaps not. The instructions from support don't connect with anything I see.  It says make sure your printer has a wireless connection to your computer, but gives no idea how to accomplish this. Do I need to connect the printer to the AirPort with a cable? Is there no where to go for actual one on one support?

  • No wireless if switch is off on boot

My vaio laptop has a wireless kill switch, if it is switched off and then boot the system, there is no wireless detected even if I switch it on later, I noticed Opensuse 11 also has this problem, they both have kernel 2.6.25, however, Ubuntu Hardy (kernel 2.6.24) does not have this problem, I can switch the wireless on after boot and the system just detects and scans wireless network.

What megamixman says is right, that's how you need to automate the use of the kill switch. On my Vaio, the acpi event is given to my acpi handler script as:
    arg $1 = sony/hotkey
    arg $2 and arg $3 = I forget, it down't matter
arg $4 = 0000003c to mean radio was switched on, 0000003d to mean radio was switched off
But your hardware may be different. You'll need to log the events or something to see how your hardware is reporting the kill switch actions.
All that being said, though, I think the original poster may have had a different concern: maybe he's finding himself unable to even MANUALLY start up his wifi, if he boots with the radio switched off but subsequently switches it on. If he can't do it manually, then he can't script it either.
If this is the concern, then I suggest that maybe booting with the radio switched off results in your wifi driver not being loaded. So after you switch the radio on, you may have to manually do something like this:
    sudo modprobe iwl3945
That's assuming you use sudo not su; and you should replace your own wifi driver for iwl3945. That's what I use on my Vaio, but perhaps you use iwl4965 or something else.
If that doesn't help, then sorry, I don't know what else to suggest. Other than always booting with the radio switched on. How often do you boot your laptop anyway?

Verizon Residential and Verizon Wireless each now have their own individual, dedicated communities. We are excited to bring you a new Verizon Wireless community to enhance your online experience.
By creating dedicated communities, each community will have additional space to offer you more content and functionality. We can offer you new categories and bring in new subject matter or break up existing content into more specific subjects for you to reference more easily. At the same time, the communities will only be a "click" away from each other.
Below are answers to some of the questions we anticipate might be top of mind for you.
Why did Verizon Wireless and Verizon Residential become 2 separate communities?
As a Community Only user, can I still post to both the Verizon Residential and the Verizon Wireless ...
I want to post a message to the Verizon Residential Community, but I can't sign in to post.
If my password is changed on the Verizon Wireless Community, will I have to change it on the Verizon...

Will someone please tell me how to get to the Wireless Forum, Prepaid, Phones and Devices etc. I have gone round and round with the site that wants me to sign up AGAIN and I can't since I'm already signed into the Forums. This site is so screwed up.  I have logged onto the New Community Site and the New News Central etc. I just want the wireless forum sites. • HP 4620 has lost wireless communication

    Hi,
I have an HP OfficeJet 4620 network printer.
All of a sudden the wireless light turned off, and whenever I try to enable it by pressing the WiFi button I get the followig message: "Wireless communication has been disabled. Contact your network administrator or the person who set up the printer."
If I try to go to the network settings by going to the Setup Menu > Network, I get the exact same error; I also see it if I try to print a network status page.
I also tried restoring the defaults, but that didn't worked.

I would call HP Support (800-474-6836) It sounds like a defective radio

  • Wireless Communication problem between HP Photosmart C309g and Linksys E2500 router

    Hello,
I used C309g  connected to DLink Dl-624 router (wireless connection) and everything was working correctly. Now I changed the router to Linksys E2500 (dual band router) and I've got strange problem I cannot fix.
The printer connects to router, obtaint IP address and network report does not indicates any problem. Also HP Print & Scan Doctor does not report any problem.
But when I try to print from my laptop, the pint start and is quickly broken, and I've got the message that printer is diconnected. The printer stops. When I leave it for a coupl of minutes, the printing starts and after few lines stops again with the same message on the laptop.
When I return to DLink router, everything works correctly.
I tried with 4 different laptops, with different operating systems, and i've gor the same issue. But the laptops communicates well, the network does not break..
I enforced router to use IP reserved number for the printer, used the same IP range and number for my network and printer on Linksys and DLink, does not help.  I've turn off firewall on the router - does not help. I've change the channel range for 2.4 GHz network to 20MHz only - does not help.
What would be the problem with it? Is there something related to dual-band? Any idea?

Well, I did not install the printer drivers from cd, I did it from the Hp webpage. Looking for the potential problems I reinstall the drivers and it did not helped. I also turn off the firewall router application and it also did not help.
I suspect I have the printer firmware up to date e.g my version is WHM1FN0931BR.
I've made some test with router settings:  switch from automatic WPS configuration to manual and tried network mode as wireless b only (default was mixed). This makes the communication between router and printer continuous (no breaks), I could normally scan documents directly to network drive, but could not print at all: the printing option on my laptop pops up, and looks like document was sent to nowhere.. printer did not start to print at all. But other network devices starts to experience connection breaks and performance issues. When I returned to mixed mode, the communication between network devices returns to normal operation, but not with the printer - where I experiences original problems.
My network is quite complex - 4 laptops and 2 TV sets communicates (wireless or LAN 100mbit cable ) via cental router with NAS server (with DLNA) and internet (DSL cable modem). Router also works as DHCP server, where any server type devises (e.g my printer) has reserved IP addresses (based on MAC number). No matter if I try to print from wireless or via LAN cable laptop, no matter what OS is on laptop. I have even tried to connect the printer via LAN (forcing DHCP to give the LAN pronter the same IP as was previously for wireless ), and stil the same: communication is broked and the print starts and suddenly stops.., then starts angain after few minutes - and stops (the same problem as wireless). So I do not understand what the hell is going on. Rest of my network works perfect .. except this printer.. Any other idea, what coul be the issue?
