  • Z77a-g45 cpu power question

I am having some issues with my 2500k throttling down to 3.3 when the cpu package exceeds 145-150w. My temps are fine and from the testing I have done I believe it might be a motherboard or bios limit. Right now I am running a 4.7 turbo overclock and the voltage is only hitting 1.308-1.312 on average under load and the only things that cause the issue is ibt and aida fpu only stress test. Under full load gaming and benching about the highest I've seen it hit is 110w and have not noticed any lag or slowdown (hwinfo tracking) even in bf3 multiplayer. Pretty much wondering if I have missed a setting somewhere that is limiting the watts or if it is because it's an ivy bridge board with a sandy processor. I have been able to 3d bench all the way up to 5150 but as soon as you start ibt the system powers off, I believe to protect itself from the watts being drawn by the cpu at those speeds.
    Thanks in advance

I have settled in on a 4.5 turbo overclock and got it tuned in to where I have no throttle  . There really isn't enough performance improvement to run it any higher with this board. I really think I got a nice chip here though so maybe when I can afford it I'll grab a better board. I actually got 4.8 stable with turbo but not worth the temps and voltage needed. Got easier figuring this board out after I knew what the limits were, I really thought it would handle 180w-200w. I'll toss up the bios screens for you in a little while, alot different than what I expected but controls the throttling and makes sure the board doesn't get overheated and throttle. I tossed a fan in on the vrm's to try and keep them cooler too. Running ibt on max might still cause some throttling but I don't think it is worth running on this board because of the power limit.

  • Z77A-G45 - No Power

    Hi all.
This is the first MSI board I have owned, so wanted to check I wasn't doing anything stupid before I RMA it back to Scan.
My problem is fairly simple, I can't any power to the board! no matter what power supply I try, I'm not getting any blue CPU phase lights whatsoever. The only things I have plugged in are an 3570k CPU, a stock cooler and one 4GB stock of DDR3 Ram. I have the 24-pin ATX power plugged in securely, and have tried both 4-pin and 8-pin into the other ATX CPU power interface.
I was wondering, what's the bare minimum you need plugged in to these boards in order for them to register power? Should I be getting the blue CPU power lights with just the above components plugged in? Would an incorrect jumper setting cause the power LEDs to not come on?
In theory, if I disconnected everything and just plugged power into the board with no CPU or memory present, it should still register the power LEDs, correct?
Any help appreciated! Really want to get this up and running quickly.

Same thing happened to me last night. Computer was working fine and It just randomly shuts off. I tried a different PSU and still nada. Ive had this Mobo for honestly 12 months exactly.. (well almost) I got it last black friday. It has always worked great no issues, I have no clue what to do now...

  • Gaming rig wont power up. Z77A-G45 involved.

    Hello MSI,
I have a problem with my gaming rig.  I recently upgraded to the Z77a mobo, the i5, and the RAM.  Now, that upgrade has been working fine for over a month (no CTDs, BSODs or any glitches at all).  Performance wise, it had been running BF3 and SWTOR perfectly, both on maximum settings- smooth as butter.   Then suddenly 3 days ago it just wont power on.
    MOBO: Z77A-G45
CPU: i5 3570K 3.4Ghz  (using stock fan, no OC.)
    RAM: Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600
    PSU: Corsair TX650W
    GPU: XFX HD6870
    OS: Windows 7
SSD: OCZ Agility 2 (running the OS)
HDD:  Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM (x2) (for storage)
At first I thought it was the PSU.  Corsair's website has the handy suggestion of powering up the PSU with the Green wire (PS ON#) shorted to any Black (GND) on the +24V ATX Connection.  I did so with no load on the PSU and the PSU's fans spin up.
Next, I suspected the tower's power button.  so I took an multimeter to it, and the button is working- providing the normal momentary switch action.
Next, I reconnected the PSU into the rig, and again shorted the PS ON# pin to the GND.  Now, there's is some partial activity, but the computer still wont boot up normally.  The partial activity is as follows:
    -cpu fan is spinning
-one blue LED on the mobo's bank of four phase LEDs.
-both HDDs are powered (can feel them spinning)
    -GPU fan is spinning.
Now, I wont lie, I'm not sure if shorting the PS ON# pin is sufficient signal to boot the computer, since the signal isn't coming from the power pins of JFP1.  But it is worth noting.
So based on that train of thought,  I also tried shorting the power pins of JFP1.  Sadly nothing happens- no activity whatsoever.
The last piece of information I have is that in the just before all this happened, I was in the BIOS and enabled the Resume from S3 by USB and also the PS2 Mouse/Keyboard settings.  Even though I've used those settings before, maybe I eff'ed something up somehow.  So I'm planning on resetting the CMOS tonight.
After that, I don't know what else to do other than take the rig into the repair shop- it's got me stumped. Maybe the mobo is dead, or the cpu.
Any thoughts on this crazy problem I'm having?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestion Jerry, I'll give that a try too- but it does seem like a longshot though.
It has happend to me, not with usb but with PS2 mice and keyboard. Gamers sometimes prefer to connect the keyboard to the ps2 port as the mechanical ones will accept a higher number of simultaneous keypresses at this port. Mine till accept more simultaneous keypresses than I have fingers!
Also gaming keyboards will often take a LOT of abuse.

  • Z77A-G45 start up-shut down loop with more than 1 stick RAM

New Build, personal use and doing it myself:
    BOARD: MSI Z77A-G45
    BIOS:   *?* click-bios reports "E7752IMS V2.5", but "MS-7752 VER: 1.4" printed on board?
PSU:      Thermaltake 850-watt Black Widow 69A 12v rail
CPU:      Intel Core i7-3770K BX80667i73770K - Quad Core, 8MB L3 Cache, 3.50GHz, 77W, Unlocked, fan included, no extra cooler yet
    MEM:    Corsair Vengeance CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B 2x4GB 1600 MHz, 9-9-9-24, PC3-12800, 1.5V
    HDD:    WD Blue WD10EALX 1TB, SATA 6Gbs, 7200RPM, 32MB Cache
CASE:  Thermaltake VN770M1W2N Overseer RX-I Full Tower
    OS:     Win7 Pro 64-bit
System bought as bundle including the 2x4GB Corsair RAM.  Assembly went well but took me a long time to make sure I had it all right.  Then, nothing happened at power-up, no lights or anything.  My first reaction was to replace the included Thermaltake power supply (700 watt 52A 12volt rail) - I disconnected all power to the unit and removed the original psu and, on a whim, I booted up with the original power supply outside the case and the lights came on with the psu laying on it's side!  Got the start-up and shut-down loop (lights up and spins all fans for a few seconds, then shuts down and repeats ad infinitum), which I was not expecting. Replaced the original power supply with the Black Widow (specs listed above) and got same shut-down loop.
Started checking the memory sticks one at a time in DIMM2, each produced that shut-down loop.  Also tried with two sticks of Patriot Viper 3 PVI316G160C9K 2x8GB 1600 MHz, 9-9-9-24, PC3-12800, 1.5V (which doesn't appear on MSI's compatible list...but I had it handy) Then, With the last 8GB Patriot stick in DIMM2, I finally let it go through that shut-down loop 5-6 times out of frustration, and then it suddenly powered up "normally"!
I took advantage and have smoothly installed Win7 Pro, and mobo drivers from CD, no glitches, USB working fine.  Then tested each stick - all 4 RAM sticks work individually in DIMM2, but the board will not accept a 2nd stick in 4 without that same shut-down loop (tried using either matched pairs).  Manual specifies using DIMM2 and 4 (which are the black ones) for dual channel.  Have also tried slots 1 and 3 (blue) with same shut-down loop results, no BSOD or error codes, not even any beeps.  Computer boots normally and runs Win7 just fine with one 8GB stick in DIMM2.  Also boots Windows and runs fine with one 4GB Corair chip in DIMM2.
Have done CMOS clears and also re-seated the cpu and heatsink/fan, and all pins and board connections looked OK.
Have some problem getting into the BIOS screen to look at things - seems to boot up so fast with a re-start that Delete key and F11 don't quite catch before Windows starts (8-year-old Logitech USB keyboard?).  Have to completely power down and start up to get into BIOS, but that doesn't always work either. System recognized the memory change to the Corsair stick, but the screen went by so quick I couldn't catch it to get into BIOS.
    Questions:
    1) I've searched this board and read for hours about similar shut-down loops problems, but either nothing seems to match my particular quandary or I don't know what to look for.  I don't understand what's happening with this shut-down loop - since all four sticks work individually in DIMM2, could DIMM4 slot be defective and I need to RMA the board?
    2) I have not yet removed the board and tried to start it outside the case - could a short be causing the 2nd slot to malfunction?  Standoffs are built into the case but they didn't seem too low, and the amount of standoffs matched the mobo mounting holes wiwth nothing else protruding.  It's a really solid board that did not bend when being attached. It's also possible to look down behind the board with the front cover off and see that nothing is touching it.  Will breadboard it next, since I have to take it out, anyway.
    3) Where exactly is the Bios version printed on the board?  Click Bios reports version as 2.5 but appears that 1.4 is marked on the board.  Have done no updates of any kind, only thing I did was disable the splash screen so I could see POST (like I could read that fast...!).  Do I need to contact MSI to find out what Bios version actually shipped with this board?  It's OK if I got an older board with updated BIOS, but it's confusing when something different appears to be printed on board.
Additional info:  Phase lights - LED is lit and all lights flashed at boot-up. CPU temp running for three hours idle is steady 37-38C, mainboard system temp 25C.  Went with a larger power supply because I intend to use Crossfire and more drives in the near future, but using onboard video for now.  System to be used for graphics/video processing with multiple programs running.
I'm currently working from an ASUS M3A78-CM board with AMD Phenom 9650 2.4 GHz.  I've never dealt with an MSI or an Intel system before, and the Click-Bios is something new to me.  Alas, I'm not an expert, but I've followed the basic steps I knew.  What did I do wrong, overlook or just plain don't know?  I sure would appreciate another opinion before I give up. I'm amazed at the speed of this motherboard/CPU combo - it's probably more than I need, but I'm intrigued to figure it out.
    Looking forward to those opinions,
    Jilliebob

Do this, and while it is in the open re-examine your cpu pins w/ a bight light and hd zoom or a magnifying glass.
Thanks, xmad, I'll look at th CPU again tomorrow/next day under the glass when I take the board out.  I already checked them under magnification and was leaning toward a funky board, but it never hurts to re-check.  Eyesight is not what it used to be, for sure (I miss DOS, if that's a clue...).  Don't want to flash the BIOS if not necessary, since it runs Windows fine and everything works except that RAM.
Bernhard, I don't have CPU-Z installed on that machine and don't want to install anything else until it's working normally.  I'd never seen Click-Bios before and just need to get over my initial suspicion of something new!  Also learn my way around it before I change anything.  I'd never encountered a board reporting a bios different than printed on it.  I've never messed with manual memory settings or done more overclocking than just a little exploratory and suprisingly successful nudge - if you could point me toward a  good basic explaination of all those settings, I could learn from there.
    Appreciate your input very much.
Have learned a lot just reading the threads here for the last few days.  This is the best forum I've ever encountered.  I'll report back - some suggestions in other posts resembling my problem ended with no resolution, and that's a shame because one doesn't know if it worked or not.

  • Brand-new Z77A G45 not booting

Hello all. Just started putting a new build together the other day, using the Z77A G45. When I went to boot it up for the first time, it gave me the "Military Class III" splash screen, with the prompts to switch to POST, start BIOS setup, etc. However, pressing any of the keys doesn't do anything, and it shuts down after about twenty seconds or so. The CPU phase leds all turn on for a few seconds after it's powered on, but after that only the first one remains lit.
I thought it might be because it wasn't recognizing my USB keyboard, but I had the same problem even when I used the PS/2 converter that came with the keyboard. I tried clearing the CMOS, and it gave me a screen showing that it recognized everything plugged into the board, and prompted me to hit F1 to continue setup, which worked, but from there all I got was a black screen with an "underscore" in the upper left hand corner. Rebooting with only one stick of RAM didn't change the problem, and I've tried all the USB ports, with similar results.
I'm thinking that the problem lies in the CPU being damaged during installation, but there don't seem to be any bent pins.
    Here's the build:
    CPU - Intel Core i3-3220 3.3GHz Dual-Core
    Motherboard - MSI Z77A-G45 ATX LGA1155
    Memory - Kingston Blu Red Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333
    Storage - Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM
Video Card - MSI GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost 2GB
Case - NZXT Tempest 410 ATX Mid Tower
    Power Supply - SeaSonic 520W ATX12V / EPS12V
Operating System - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit)
    Monitor - Asus VS238H-P 23.0"
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try it without any ram, you should get a beep. If not it seems to be RMA time.
This is not true depending on the board and bios version. Not all boards/ bios versions beep at all.

  • New z77a G45 Motherboard - computer won't start.

    Hi everyone,
I would appreciate some help, if possible.
    I've purchased the following:-
    1) i7 3770 processor;
    2) z77a-g45 motherboard;
Installed them just fine (I think?) - first startup I get a 'CPU has changed, update settings' on the BIOS. However, after this message the system shut down. Now there's a faint smell of ozone in the air, and the system won't power on whatsoever. The motherboard has a handy set of LED's labelled CPU phase. When I hit the power button one lights up... then nothing.
    I have done the following:-
    1) Checked the PSU on another system - it works perfectly;
    2) removed and reinstalled the CPU and cooling fan. Reapplied thermal paste.
    3) Run the system using only PSU, CPU and RAM.
None of the above seem to do anything. I get the impression I have, through my carelessness, fried something. Any idea, given the vague description of the above, whether it would be the CPU or the mobo?
The power supply I am using is a CIT ATX 12v 700UB supply.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Remove the MB from the case and check if there are more than the required MB mounting standoffs. Ensure that there are only the ones that line up with the MB mounting screw holes on the case backplate and no others that would cause short circuit between case and MB. Also ensure that you have no pinched wires or wires with damaged insulation from the PSU that could be short circuiting.
It's always best to assemble the components out of the case on a sheet of bare cardboard to make sure it all fires up and runs OK before installing it in the case. Do this, retest and let us know how it goes.

  • MSI Z77A-G45 Can't maintain overlock

I'm having problems overclocking my system. When I enable OC genie it will run 4.2ghz all day np. Now when I reset default values, turn op the vcore and then adjust my CPU frequency I can achieve 4.5ghz quite easily. Run some benchmarks everything is stable no problem.
Now as soon as I shutdown my PC and start it back up it always fails, tries starting about 3-4 times and then decides the OC failed and then restores default settings.
But even when I only up the frequency a little let's say 3500mhz it still won't boot up after powering down. It seems like something is changed after shutting down and powering it up again.
How come manually it can run high speeds but as soon as I power it down and up it fails?
And how come OC genie can run 4200 and power up just fine.
Even when I mimic all values OC genie uses it still wont power up.
    update:
I was a little to fast to say it will work with oC genie all the time. At the moment when I load defaults and then enable OC genie it works fine. But shutdown the machine and then start it again it will also fail with OC genie enabled.
So it won't overlock even 100mhz when shutdown, when booted up and resetted there is no problem and I can stabily run 4500mhz with high load np. What is the difference between a reset and a shutdown and start up??? This makes no sense.
I'm running the latest bios version.

Have you installed all of the drivers? I linked win 7 64-bit make sure to select the right one.
Could you post ss's of your cpuid spd / memory tab & bios settings please?
Edit: Did you make sure the memory is installed in the right dimms for dual channel operation it is dimms 2 & 4 which sometimes throws people off.
Edit 2:  Don't do this with an I5 2500k, use the multiplier only to increase speed. That cpu does not like that.
Windows & drivers are not the problem. As long as it boots I get into windows, but it will fail at the POST state. Memory is installed as decribed in the manual in slot 2 & 4.
    I made some screenshots:
Between pic 1 and the last I changed dram timing to link, but on auto it will fail the same way. Everything is stock. It doesn't matter what I change as long as I don't change the cpu freq it will boot just fine. But god forbid I overclock 100mhz it will fail. But only after shutting down. Like said before I can turn it all the way up to 4500mhz just fine, just don't shutdown and try to boot it up again.
I also did a CMOS reset, didn't help either.

The manual is completely absent of any troubleshooting section. So my main question is, is there any way to tell what stage the startup is failing on? Other threads on this forum (here and here) suggest that the problem is due to lack of processor support. As the motherboard was sold as Ivy Bridge ready, I'd like soe way of confirming this as most likely cause before paying for some fix.
Hey I am actaully sharing the similar problem of yours....
    I am using MSI H77MA-G43 (BIOS v1.5), and a set of DDR3-1600 4GB RAM x 2.

First, do a full cmos clear, then:
Place the board on a non-conductive surface w/ 1 stick of ram, the cpu, cooler and psu and try to start it like that.
If it fails again, switch the ram and try different dimms.
If no luck, remove the cpu and inspect the socket pins with a bright light and magnifying glass. Look for any bent or even slightly deformed pins.
Alredy did all this things, later today I will post some img, maybe you can see something im doing wrong.
    Thanks alot,
Note: it is possible I got a damaged CPU?

  • MSI z77a-G45 Gaming 3770k overclocking?

I just recently purchased the z77a-G45 Gaming mobo and a i7 3770k, most of my googling would leave me to believe that the 3770k can easily obtain 4.6Ghz with fairly low voltages like 1.16-1.20 vcore; here comes the question...in order for me to obtain some level of stability @ 4.6Ghz I must crank my vcore to 1.4150 with 100% cpu offset resulting in a 1.39 vcore in windows with a 1.38 vcore under load.  I have all power saving technologies disabled, pll overvoltage enabled, cpu vdroop offset set to 100%; my question is am I missing something with MSI boards as this is the first one I've ever owned or did I just get a very power hungry 3770k?
    General system specs
    MSI z77a-G45 Gaming MOBO
    i7 3770k CPU
    16Gb of Gskill Trident X 2400mhz memory
    Corsair HX850 Gold PSU
    MSI GTX 670 PE OC
    Cooled by custom water loop

Alrighty, appreciate the info; gonna back down to 4.4Ghz as I can maintain stability with 1.275 vcore in bios = 1.26 in windows = 1.24 under load resulting in hottest core never exceeding 70...was really hoping for 4.7-5.0Ghz overclock when most everyone who reviewed this chip in the early days was claiming such great overclocks with such low voltage.  But I'll chalk that up to either misinformation or non stability checked overclocks, I guess I'm old school; cause if it can't hold up to a minimum 24hr pass of Prime 95 small fft's it isn't stable in my book.  Might consider delidding it in a year or so once the new wears off, I had my i7 920 for about that long before I lapped it into a mirror shine lol.  So based on my new information 3770k's on average overclock between 4.4-4.6Ghz and can require up to 1.4 vcore and higher past 4.6Ghz which is where you start to really become thermally limited on liquid as the Ivy Bridge's 22nm technology puts the cores to closely together in combination with intel's cheap ass thermal compound solution. Maximum recommended voltage for 24/7 shouldn't exceed 1.4 vcore without some kick ass cooling or a combination of delidded processor and kick ass cooling cause ideally you want your cores mid 70's and below...that about sum it all up?

  • Z77A-G45 - Static sounds on USB ports

(pls move to correct forum, srry for the :censored:up)
    Hi all,
    Problem:
I recently bought a Z77A-G45 for my new rig. However it has static\electrostatic noise on the USB ports. Meaning as soon as i plug in USB speakers or my Razor Carcharitas headset (USB powered) i hear static noise of the insides of my computer. Normal 3.5mm audio output is without static, even when amplified via external amplifier.
These noises are loudest while browsing or other internet traffic, however they are always present and start right after POST.
    Troubleshooting tried:
    - Different BIOS settings regarding USB
    - Even the problem also exist outside the OS, i tried different combination of drivers (beta & officia) for NIC & Audio
    - Check and measured all grounding (and checked for ground-loop)
    - Removed all hardware except for MOBO+CPU+PSU+RAM and disconnected everything external including front-panel, to insure my perhipicals are not causing the problem
    - Did a 10pass memtest
    - Flashed the latest stable BIOS
    - Separated all cables inside the case and grouped all power & data so no interference is present
    - Tried my old Spire 650 Watt PSU
    My build setup:
    - Coolermaster  CM 690 II advanced
    - MSI Z77A-G45
    - Intel i5-3570k 3.4Ghz (Ivy) (CPUID: 0306A9
    - Scythe Mugen 3 PCGH-Edition
    - Corsair 8GB (2x4 dualchan in sock 2&4) 1600-999 Vengeance LP
    - Samsung 840 Basic 256GB
    - Seasonic G450 Powersupply (80+ gold cert)
    - Sapphire HD7950 (+boost)
    Details MSI Z77A-G45:
    - S/N: 601-7752-040B1209097231
    - BIOS: V2.9 / 20130118
Kindly help me troubleshoot to decide if my product is defect and need RMA, or if this is fixable.
EDIT: as i also had the boot problem i just updated to BIOS A02 2.10, however problem still persists as soon as computer is powered-up, i honestly do think this is hardware related ?

That doesn't appear to be a US model, and this is the forums for Toshiba USA. You may want to contact Toshiba in your region. If it's a European model, you could check the Toshiba Europe forums.
