RE1000 - No improvement of my wifi signal

I purchased this range extender because I couldn't get my wifi signal to cover my entire house (1800 sq ft -- not huge by any means). After following installation instructions, I saw NO improvement of my wifi signal. $100 wasted!

Most importantly, remember that in order to get the best performance from an RE1000 you need to place the extender in an area where you still have at least 50% signal strength to your router when you place it in the final location where the RE1000 will be used. To configure the RE1000 you will need to login to the UI after you have put the RE1000 in the final location to verify the signal strength below is a reminder about signal bars and what they mean as a reminder
For ALL configurations you should have between 2-3 bars of signal at the very least. If you have less, then you have to move the RE1000 closer to the router. You can also check the status on the status page of the RE1000 as well. On the status page it measures both Signal Strength and Signal Quality. If either set of bars is red you must move the RE1000 closer to the Router.
If you are getting the same problem then you need to make certain setting in the router to get the better throughput:
1] Open up the browser and on the address bar type 192.168.1.1 that will open up the Router setup page.
2] Lower the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) from 1500 to 1400 or less (usually found on your router's main/ basic setup page). Here is the link for determining and setting up the correct MTU size: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=fbf8e8564632422eaa8ea80bf9dcba64_386.xml&pid=80&re...
3] Then go to the Wireless tab, keep network mode as mixed, and make the Channel Bandwidth to 20 MHz only and Channel to 9..
#Adjust the following advanced wireless settings:
~~ Lower the beacon interval from 100 to 75
~~ Lower the fragmentation threshold from 2346 to 2306
~~ Lower the RTS threshold from 2347 to 2307.

I have BT Infinity at home with the BT modem connected to the phone line and then to a BThub which delivers the wif signal. I have purchased an airport extreme to improve wi fi strength if how do I connect up to hub it states connect modem to WAN on back of Airport Extreme.
Instructions do not mention connection to BT Hub and the BT modem has only one output which you dicsonnect from Hub and connect to airport extreme leaving. Once you do this Hub has no signal.
    How do I rectify
    Paul

you can also set up the Airport extreme to extend the wireless by hitting the wireless tab in the airport menu then click the drop down menu to select extend
Apple's "extend" function is a proprietary setting that was designed to only work with other Apple routers.
It would be extremely unlikely that this setting would work with a BT product, or any other manufacturer's product for that matter.
But, I haven't tested this with a BT product...and I suppose anything is possible.
Still, I would be extremely surprised if this worked.
The AirPort Extreme might "join" the BT network if you try this......but the AirPort does not provide any additional wireless signal coverage when it "joins" a wireless network. In fact, it really does nothing when it "joins" a network except enable the USB port.

  • Weak apple tv wifi signal improves when using iphone hot spot

using apple tv and wifi signal is weak but when i tether to my iphone 4s on the same wifi network the signal improves. is there a way to improve signal on apple tv without hot spot.

    Hi everyone !
I'm new on this forum (and French btw, so I apologize in advance for any mistake (: )
I've bought the brand new MBP 13' few weeks ago, and I kept having this problem until now, I just installed K64 Enabler, and it seems to work perfectly, so I wanted you all to know it
Thanks for all the help you brought me !
Hope Apple will fix this once for all !
    See you !

  • Improve wifi signal?

I live in a shared apartment. The router is placed in the hall and my room is across it on the inside. If I step out of the room, I get full signal, but inside the room I get two bars. I don't have a laptop or PC. I want to know how can I improve my signal strength? Will a signal repeater come in handy? Is there any signal booster? Or do I need to add a router to the connection.. Thanks.

How is the router located in the hall - on a shelf? Position it as high as you can. Sometimes the router signal is somewhat directional. Experiment by turning the router to different positions.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • I have Direct TV with wireless, but a weak wifi signal downstairs. Can I get a Airport (what, kind) that will improve my signal for my Apple TV

I have Direct TV with wireless, but a weak wifi signal downstairs. Can I get a Airport (what, kind) that will improve my signal so that my Apple TV will work?

If you have an AirPort Extreme now, an AirPort Express could be added to your network to extend the range of the network.
See the info about Extend an Existing Wireless Network.........http://www.apple.com/airport-express/
Install the AirPort Express approximately half way between the AirPort Extreme and the point where the Apple TV will be located. The more that you can eliminate obstructions like walls, a ceiling or heavy furniture in the signal path between the AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express and Apple TV, the better the network will perform.

  • Low Wifi signal

    HI
I have 2 mac 1 iMac G4 800 and the other iBook G3 both with the same air port card and about 5' apart the iMac works fine and is the farthis away but the ibook will not pick up a
signal. if start to walk to my router i need tobe about 10' from it on the lower floor for it to work any way to boost the wifi signal.. from up stairs

There are at least two possibilities that could be the cause of the problem.
First, it could be that the AirPort antenna wire is pinched in the iBook's hinge. Does adjusting the angle of the display improve reception? If so, suspect the AirPort antenna cabling. (This happened to my husband's iBook.)
Second, it could be that the iBook's AirPort card is failing. This doesn't happen very often, but it does happen occasionally. To see if that's the problem, try swapping the iBook's card with the iMac's. Does the iBook now work, but the iMac have problems? If so, it's the original AirPort card at fault. (This happened to my iBook.)

  • Iphone 3GS very weak wifi signal since 4.3.3 update

Ever since i update to 4.3.3 (which I'm regretting now) my iphone will not connect to my wifi router unless I'm less than 3 feet from it.
My wife has a 1st gen IPod touch (which hasn't been updated) can pick up the wifi and connect to the wed with it upto 30 feet from the router, as my iphone used to.
Is this a 3GS issue as i've read some other posts about a similar problem. I'm not willing to accept this as a hardware problem as the minute before the updating to 4.3.3 my wifi signal strength was prefect, the minute after the update was complete the signal strength was and still is worse than sh*$e.
I have done all the power down resets as suggested on other posts, but it doesn't work.
Is there anybody out there that can tell me how to (if possible) to revert back to 4.3.2?????????????????????????????????????
    RLB

I don't have the answer to this issue but I'm experiencing the exact same problem.
Since 4.3.3 my wifi signal strength is close to nothing. When I'm 3 feet away from any router, at home or at work, I have 3 bars not even full reception. As soon as I walk a few yards away from the router, I lose the connection completely.
I've tried everything to fix this. Reset network settings, turning off Bluetooth, disabling location services, full restore, reconfiguring routers, etc. but nothing works. I'm now using the iOS 5 Beta 3 and still no improvement to this issue.
In this thread there seems to be some recognition from Apple that this is a known problem and indeed a software bug. Hard to know if it's true though:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2815831
The same weak wifi signal seem to happen to iPad users too: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2387493 This thread dates back over a year, so it looks as if this problem is common but without fix.

  • How can I improve my iMac wifi reception?

Hi there… looking for help to figure out how I can improve the wifi reception on my early 2008 iMac. I get very intermittent wifi signal – coverage varies from zero to full bars, but is very unreliable. I get much better wifi coverage from other devices in exactly the same location – XP laptop, iPod touch & iPad.
The iMac is located in the garage in our back garden which is about 30m from the wifi router in the house. I don’t have direct line of sight between the iMac & the router (although there are windows in the facing walls). I don’t have an option of running an Ethernet cable to the garage.
Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
    1. Added an Airport Extreme. While this upgraded my UPC router / network from G to N, it gave no noticeable improvement to the iMac reception.
    2. Added an Airport Express. I set this up to “Expand existing network”. I initially positioned this in the house (at the socket that is physically closest to the garage) but again, no noticeable improvement.
    3. I then moved the AExp in the garage itself. For 30 seconds I had a green light on the AExp & full coverage… but then the coverage dropped & I got the flashing amber light in the AExp.
So now, I’m now wondering if it is possible to connect some kind of USB wifi aerial into the iMac that would enable me to boost the reception and / or run an external antenna away from the iMac & closer to the router (possibly in line of sight). I have checked in local stores & online, but couldn't find anything that fits the bill.
Any ideas?... I should add that network coverage in the house itself is great. I brought the iMac into the house & immediate got full bars & excellent reception. I have a lot of networked devices in the house & they all operate with no issue whatsoever.

    hi Ralph,
what is the behavior of these devices with respect to surge protection?
to be honest i don't know. we have very stable power supply in Germany.
Can they be placed on the safe side of a surge protector?
don't see why not. i'm using a pair to get internet from the main router to my TC. the TC is operating in +bridge mode+ and creates a separate network for me.
the adapter next to the main router is plugged directly into a wall outlet, the one for my TC is plugged into my iMacs UPS. no problems there.
If you live in a high thunderstorm area like Tampa, FL in the US, you would not even consider using electronic equipment without very high quality surge protection.
irregardless where you live, operating my precious Macs without an UPS for each is unthinkable for me. surge protectors, IMHO, don't cut it ! it ought to be a UPS. heck, even my TC has one although just a simple one. my desktop Macs each have a UPS with a USB port so the UPS can send a shutdown command to the Mac in case of an emergency. my MBP has a built-in UPS, obviously.
so, everyone reading this: do yourself a favor and get a decent [_*Uninterruptible power supply (UPS)*|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uninterruptible_powersupply] such as [this|http://www.google.com/products/catalog?client=safari&q=apc+ups&oe=UTF-8&cid=118 8217317658000104&os=tech-specs].
Also, will these function on a circuit with ground-fault interruptors installed?
if power to the units is interrupted, they won't work. once power is restored, the will work again. again, if you connect everything to UPS systems, you will @ least have your local network running, even if the connection to the internet is interrupted.

  • I am staying long term at a hotel. Is there a way I can boost the wifi signal?

I am staying long term at a hotel. Is there a way I can boost the wifi signal?

I think you may have better luck working with the hotel management and have them contact their wireless service provider to see if they can improve the signal in your room.
The only other option might be an external Wi-Fi antenna for your iPad ... but I'm not aware of anyone providing these at this point in time. Sorry!

  • I need to boost my wifi signal from my Time Machine.  What is that device called.  it plugs into the wall.

I have an apple booser that plugs into the walll to help boost my wifi signal.  I went and purchased another one and they sold me the airport express and it does not have the wall plugin.  What is it that I need to exchange it for?  You would have thought they would have sold me the right thing!

Does the old still a good product?
    Yes
So, this is all there is all there is available to boost my signal in hard to reach areas with Apple devices?
You could try an AirPort Extreme instead of an AirPort Express. The issue may be size. Imagine eight of your A1392 models all stacked on top of each other.  It does have a better antenna setup, but I doubt that you would notice much improvement in your situation.

  • Any suggestions for better wifi signal?

    Hi everyone,
So I live in a bit of an older home, and since the walls are pretty thick and everything is compartmentalized, my wifi signal doesn't reach everywhere with the best signal.  Below are the details of my set-up along with additional potentially-relevant information to provide context:
I have FiOS internet with basic cable (just downgraded from FiOS premium cable to save $$$)
The FiOS console is in basement
I have coax cables from the basement console going to: (internet) one router (the MI424WR Verizon FiOS Router) in office, and (cable TV) three TVs - one in the basement, one on 1st floor and one on 2nd floor.
My internet is only 2-3 bars in the location of the TV on the 1st floor.  This is probably where we spend the most time using our devices when I'm not working, and would need the greatest signal boost.
Since I've downgraded to basic cable, I'd like to be able to stream on-line content in the location of the 1st floor TV without too much lag.
It would be very difficult to string an ethernet cable from my current router in the office to another router in the 1st floor TV room.
In the past I've tried relatively cheap [$30] wifi extenders with no help.
I've read a bit about installing a second wireless router, but not sure if I can do it by just splitting the coax going to my 1st floor TV into another wireless router without an ethernet cable from the office-router.  (I'm okay with technology, but am somewhat behind in my understanding of wireless networks).
I'd like to spend less than $100 (assuming I'd need to buy another router - any recommendations?) to do it, if possible.
All suggestions (including non-second router recommendations) are greatly appreciated!!!  Also, details on how to hook up the configuration would be especially welcomed.  Thanks again and have a happy holiday!

    phillyrx wrote:
    Hi jsk2,
Thanks for the suggestion.  No, I haven't tried to move the router to the 2nd floor.  Is that supposed to improve the signal house-wide?  The 2nd floor coax is on the opposite end of the house of the 1st floor coax.
Also, might  be a really stupid question, but can the coax cables be used interchangably?  (ie: the coax for my TV can be used for the router, and the coax for my router can be used for a TV)?
    Thanks!
You don't mention what your tier is but I assume it's under 100mb?
any of the coax connectors can be used for tv AND router by adding a splitter - up to a max of 8 I believe.
Go onto ebay and get a couple of old fios routers and add one on each floor
Of course using ethernet would be a far better coice but I guess that's not an option

  • Weak Wifi Signal Workaround

Original post here by Gazza: http://www.mactheforum.com/showthread.php?p=2716
Basically what you can do as a workaround is reset the network settings.
Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
This will wipe out any wifi networks you have stored so you will have to manually connect to them again. However, it does seem to improve the signal strength. It worked for my specific case, as well as some others, but it may not work for you depending on the exact issue.
It didn't completely work for me the first time, but I tried it one more time just to make sure and after that my wifi is fine. Remember, just because the symptoms are the same doesn't mean the base issue is the same. YMMV
I had an iPhone 3G that worked fine with wifi on v2.2.1 ever since release. I updated to 3.0 and bam, almost non-existant wifi. I had to keep turning wifi off and then back on to get some signals, and manually connecting to access points that I had already set up auto-connect with. After two network setting resets (I had an issue with the first reset) I now have full signal strength that I used to have with v2.2.1. Latency and network speed is back to normal.
    Message was edited by: eyhk

After applying this workaround, I still have times when the wifi signal shows only 1 bar. However, when I run a speed test, I still get normal (albeit lower than pre-3.0) speeds, around 3500 kbps. As I ran the test, my signal started increasing from 1 bar to full bars but it had no effect on the download speed. I'm thinking in my case that the bug is merely in Apple's calculation of signal strength (again) which causes a cosmetic error that doesn't really affect my download. This could affect the connection, however, if the calculated signal is too weak it might not even attempt to connect which might be the cause of most lost wifi signals. This is more of my speculation based on observed behavior of the iPhone so take it for what it's worth.

  • My Ellipsis 8 can no longer detect my gym's wifi signal. Please help!

I used my Ellipsis 8 to watch Netflix over the open wifi signal at my gym for 2 months with no problem. One day I showed up and no signal was found. I went through all the trouble shooting steps all the way down to factory resets with no resolution. Called Verizon tech support and still nothing. They had me send them the tablet in a recovery box. One week later I have the tablet back and they said nothing was wrong with the unit. I went to the gym today and it still can not detect the signal. My Samsung phone picks up a very strong signal. No other people have reported a problem with wifi connection issues. Obviously Planet Fitness will not allow me to start messing with their router. Any suggestions would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

I understand the importance of ensuring you are able to get connected to wifi michaeltatham. Allow us to get to the bottom of your tablet concerns. Have you recently installed any new software or new applications when it stopped connecting to the gym wifi? Have you tried to connect another device to your gym wifi?
