Sorry, ignore that. You can deactivate (on a mac) this by going to View > Read Out Loud > Deativate Read Out Loud.
It should be similar for a PC

I am having the exact same problem... My Text-to-speech just errors out when I select a new voice and then that voice disappears from the choices of voices. I can not get it to speak anything since the Leopard upgrade. Some suggestions would be great as to what might cause this to fail. Thanks

How do you add read aloud to a fixed layout book?

I have seen some ibooks (childrens books) with read aloud abilities. I know you have to do some programming but what program do you use to edit the code, can you preview it in ibooks (on ipad) if you modify the code, and is there a non-programming way to add audio/speech to your ibooks through ibooks author? Does anyone know the process or what steps and programs needed to add the read aloud feature to an ibook? (I know there are many others out their who would like to know the answers to these questions). Thanks.
Also, I have HD images (2000x1462) for my ibook in ibooks author and when I preview it on an ipad 2, it downsizes it to regular quality (like 1400x1200 ish). Since I don't yet own an iPad 3, do the images stay HD quality when an ibook (from ibooks author) is viewed on an iPad 3?

Okay, I just finished building my Ibook in Ibooks Author. I tested one of the free ibooks (Peter Rabit) and liked how it reads to you. I have read many articles and other posts here on Apple.com and everyone seems to want to add this read aloud feature. I have the Fixed Layout EPUBs Miniguide and iBookstore Asse Guide 4_8 and even though the miniguide explains things step by step, its like reading Greek. I am new to programming. Since I assume you are an expert, what I need is help getting started. I'm pretty good at figuring things out, I just need to get a jumpstart as fast as possible. (I don't want to spend a whole month trying to add this read aloud feature).
1. I have a finished book but its not looking like the fixed layout kids books I see on ibooks. Is there a simple way to just tell ibooks its a fixed layout and get rid of the textbook features without using programming? (I know there are people out there who agree with me)
2. I know that I need a XML SMIL compatable text editor (BBedit is the only one I heard is free and good). But where do I begin? Is there some kind of template of code where I just add in the code to get the book to read from audio files? If I edit the epub file, will this book still be able to be sent to the iPad through ibooks Author for a preview?
3. I am familiar with Audacity so the audio part is doable. But the coding is scaring me. To add a word by word reading for the ibook requires more programming.
4. Tell me a short list of what I need to do in order. I have all this information but its overwhelming because I hate programming. (I tried making an iphone app and gave up because it required Xcode, which is way out of my league). I don't know where to start from my finished iBook so what is the next thing I need to do?

Trouble with Adobe Read Aloud

I activated the read aloud feature but when I push the button to read the page, it will say warning empty page. When I click on the text, it will say blank.

I can both select and highlight the text but for some reason it reads it as an empty document. Is there something I need to do to the pdf so that the read aloud will work.

Is there any way to fine tune the view, read aloud feature? Such as to pronouce PHI as initials (not pie)? I don't see any way.

Ok, by reading the help pages on Adobe Digital Editions, I've just re-discovered this wonderful thing called VoiceOver on the mac.
When I have it turned on, it does read the contents of the epub. That is encouraging.
So my question now is how can I exert more control over VoiceOver so it will only read what I ask it to read instead of just everything on the screen and always starting at the beginning? I would like to use it like I have been using Read Aloud, ie highlight a passage and get VoiceOver to read (just) that.

There are third party apps* for this, but they lock you into their format and don't support every thing that a native FXL Indesign epub export does. Doing all the work manually for creating the SMIL file and marking the audio, etc. Is just way to hard and easy to fail at for most of us.
MANY publishers want this feature! PLEASE I beg of you, nobody can put their massive coding muscles behind such an effort like Adobe. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE consider adding an easy read-aloud margin function to the InDesign suite?
I would even pay extra for this. On bended knee, I beg you.
Aquafadas = inscrutable instructions. Expensive. French. (Can't be bothered to help customers.)
CircularFLO = easier read-aloud, but LAME-O animations, won't support InDesign animations. (Also no support. And they definitely do not want you guys to see their code.)

Read Aloud into iTunes

I recall having seen - somewhere and I can't recall where - a feature of some program, that would "read aloud" text directly into an iTunes audio file. That, so that you can later listen to it on your iOS device.
Does that sound familiar to anybody?

Why doesn't 11.0.01 read aloud on Mac Mountain Lion?

Have a Patriot 64GB stick and after my new MacBook Pro Retina decided to tell me I had removed it too soon. (no, I hadn't) things got wonky with the stick so I formatted it using Disk Utility and Tuxera's NTFS feature so I could copy >4GB files.
After I formatted the stick I started the copy process back to the stick and little files took forever. I didn't do a bench mark/thoroughput test, but a 1GB file that used to take 2-3 minutes is now sitting at 3 HOURS to complete and even then it will probably increase in time. Oops, yes, now it says 4 HOURS.
it slowly ticks up 21.2 MB, 21.3 MB, 21.4 MB excruciating to say the least.
I expect the 40+GB I had to take at most 40 minutes ~ 1 Hour, not dog slow like it is.
So I thought maybe there was some issue with the format, I plugged it into a Windows 7 PC and formatted it 'normal/not quick' for NTFS - took about an hour to format. By now I'm thinking there is something wrong with the stick.
I then copied a 1GB folder to the stick from Win 7 and it took 2 minutes - reasonable.
Ejected it, plugged it into the MacBook Pro Retina and as you see 3 to 4 hours.
I should say before I started the copy I did like Alexander Hood said with the indexing thing opended preferences and dragged the Patriot drive to Privicy then started the copy.
Sitting at 5 hours now. Gonna cancel it.
I tried both sides of the MacBook just incase perhaps the port was having issues.
I finally got my WD MY Passport and plugged it in (no privacy/index settings with that) and the same file took 3 minutes on the MacBook.
I guess I'll turn in the stick and see if the warranty will cover when a MacBook eats a stick...

(1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):

(2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
(3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
(4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
(5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

How can I find the location of the signature used in the Adobe Reader signature feature? I've been using the signature feature for a while now and it works great and I'd like to use it on another computer. However, I forgot where I stored the signature. Adobe finds it with no problems (the signature pops up when I click "Place Signature"), but I have no idea where it is.

Reader Extended Features not available in downloaded PDF

I've posted a form on my website with Reader Extended Features enabled so it can be "Ink Signed". Finding that the extended features are not available in browser Reader plugins, I created a link to the PDF with PHP that allows it to be downloaded, then opened with the standalone version of Reader, but still get the message "This document contained certain rights to enable special features in Adobe Reader. The document has been changed since it was created and these rights are no longer valid. Please contact the author for the original version of this document." If I open my original local copy of the PDF it still has Extended Features enabled. What's changing in the downloaded copy?

Bernd--thanks for your interest. I found that the problem was the PHP script that I was using to force the PDF to download instead of open in the browser plugin. I used several variations of the script with the same results--seemed to be altering the contents of the PDF which cancelled the Reader Extended Features. A solution that I found was to add
<FilesMatch "\.(pdf)$">
ForceType application/octet-stream
Header set Content-Disposition attachment
</FilesMatch>
to the .htaccess file. Since I only wanted one PDF (not all of them on the site) to be affected, I put it and the .htaccess file in a subdirectory and linked to it there. The PDF now downloads with Reader Extended Features intact.

Some words are not highlighting on my read-aloud epubs after updating IOS 6.0.1 and iBooks 3.0.1 on both my iPad 2 and iPad 3. They are working absolutely fine earlier. I even updated the latest version of iBooks 3.0.2 but nothing is working. Can anybody help?

I ran into this problem as well. Seems like something funky going on with iBooks 3. Anyways, I had to tweak my read-aloud clip starts in the smil. Where the word was not highlighting, I added a few milliseconds to the timing until the word started highlighting again. Not the most ideal solution, and not sure what exactly causes it because 90% of the words were just fine, but it seemed to fix the problem. Note prior to the problem happening, I had all my clip start timings = clip end timings for the previous word, so there were no gaps.

iTunes not installing. Windows XP, SP3. Mesage reads:" The feature you are trying to use is ona network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package iTunes.msi in the box below. iTunesSetup.exe shows in my download folder, but it will not install.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

No Sound from Adobe Read-Aloud

I have a PC running Windows 7. I have Adobe XI and Adobe Acrobat Pro intalled. I can turn on "Read-Aloud" in either but when "Read-Aloud" is turned on and I choose to read the page, the document or just a paragraph, no sound is produced. The sound card works for all other programs. Neither Adobe program will read any .pdf file. What's wrong?

The volume preferences were already set exactly as shown in your last message in both Acrobat Reader XI and Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro. Neither will read aloud any .pdf file. This problem was discovered on my home computer which is a 64-bit Dell computer running Windows 7. I tried "Read Aloud" on my office computer and it read .pdf files aloud. My office computer is a 32 bit machine running Windows XP. Any other suggestions?
