Read and write access for shared folders shouldn't be enabled but it is.

I have an external hard drive with all my media stored on it. This is shared over the local network so that others on my network can access it.
However I set it u for read only access (I dont want the rest of my family to be able to delete files) but it persists to have read & write privaleges.
Im sure im missing a really obvious point but I can't work it out. So was hoping someone could help.
In System Pref-Sharing-File Sharing the folder is shared with 3 users added:
Alastair Riddle (Read and Write) <----My account
Staff (Read Only)
Everyone (Read Only)
I have applied permission to all folders, but guests appear to be able to log on and have full read write privaleges.
Your help would be appreciated,
Ali

I'm no expert on this one, but for the others to be included under the Staff heading, I believe they have to be added to that group.
It may be easier to add them by name and set to read-only, and add an entry for Guest as read-only.
And ensure that the external drive has Owners Enabled.

  • Can I save to memory sticks for read and write access?

I use M.S. Office for Mac to do my admin. I would be very grateful if anyone can help with my queries.
I want to save work to media that allows me read and write access. Saving to discs (of any type) does not allow any editing.
    1. If I save to a memory stick will I be able to save and update my work when I want to?
    Also;
    2. Would a memory stick have to be formatted with to be suitable for Mac?
3.If the memory stick can be used for the purpose, I want to encrypt it; how would I do this please?
    4. Would encrypting place a limit on the capacity of the memory stick that can be used, e.g.  I have a choice, including 8Gb and 16Gb.
    5. I have heard that passwords can be created by Mac; what is the method for doing this please?
    Many thanks for in advance.

There is terminology here I am unfamiliar with. I feel I have embarked upon a complex path.
I do not know what HFS+ is.
HFS+ is the Mac OS X file system.  Hierarchical File System Plus (Plus as it used to be HFS, but then they improved it and said +)
By default a USB flash drive generally comes formatted with FAT (from the Microsoft MS-DOS days, but is a universal format - it might come with FAT32 or exFAT as well - still from Microsoft).  Mac OS X can read/write these, HOWEVER, its FileVault whole disk encryption is only designed to work with HFS+, which is why I mentioned it.
Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility can be used to reformat a disk, USB Flash drive, etc...  NOTE:  reformatting does erase everything on a disk, so keep that in mind.
What is the difference between File Vault and .dmg in disk utilities?
FileVault is whole disk encryption.  Everything on the disk is encrypted. and you need to enter the password just to mount the device.
A .dmg file is a regular file that happens to contain a file system inside of it.  When you double click on the .dmg file, Mac OS X will mount the file system inside as if it was a disk.  If the .dmg file is encrypted, then you will be prompted for the password before Mac OS X will mount it.  A .dmg is just a container for a file system.  Inside that contain is a full file system with files and directories just like any other file system.
You can create read only .dmg files, you can create read/write, you can create sparse (you declare the maximum side, but the initial size of the .dmg is small and will grow to the maximum size as you add things to the .dmg, you can create encrypted .dmg.
Since a .dmg is just a file with no special attributes on the outside, it can be copied around.  You can copy it over the network, you can store it in the cloud, you can put it on a USB Flash drive, you can put it on an external disk, etc...
If the device you put it can be mounted by Mac OS X, then you can double-click on the .dmg and it will mount the file system inside the .dmg and you will be able to access the files in the .dmg
This even includes USB Flash drives that use the FAT format family.  But you existing external disks can be used for that as well.
If I used an external hard drive for the purpose I have in mind, would the  disk .dmg utility allow me to access folders and files for editing or should I approach the task in a different way?  I would still wish to encrypt.
As I said above, the .dmg is a full file system where you can store files and folders inside a .dmg container file.  And you can encrypt the .dmg so it is secure.

  • Mac Mini Sever - Public Share - how enable read and write permissions for new remote files

    Hi,
this Sunday a friend ask me to help hum with a problem on is Man Mini Server. He has a small office and uses the mini server to share a public folder to all his employees.
Everyone that creates a file, saves it to the public folder at the mini mac.
That problem is that, who creates the file owns it and remains with read-only permissions to everyone else. The owner has to change the file permission in order to the rest of the employees can work on it.
I do not know mac arquitecture, I only work with windows and linux, but i suspect the principles are the same.
We try to create another folder , and share it, but it happens the same. Have you any ideas on what is wrong?
I suspect it has anything to do with de file Sharing at the mini mac, but it has read and write permissions for everyone.
    Thanks for your help.

signed applet. You aren't going to find any easy way to distribute that policy file to users, and that policy file, if you asked me to put it on my PC, I'd tell you to take a flying leap. That would open any applet to access.

  • Server 2003: make user template with read-only access for shared folders

I have need to make a type of user (like Administrator, Power User, Mobile User, User, etc.) that has read-only acess to shared folders. So when I make a new user and assign the "read-only user" template I wish to have, the user can open files
in the shared folders on the server, but not edit, save or delete files. Other users can and should remain able to edit, save & delete.
Before I dig in, is this even possible?

You could create a Group called ReadOnly, and set that to have Read on the ACLs of the relevant files or folders.
Make that template user a member of that group.
As long as they are not also a member of another group that gives them higher permissions, this would work.
Otherwise set the ReadOnly group to deny Write, which would over ride any other permission set.
    So,
    Folder A
    ACL:
    ReadOnly : R
    Users: Read/Write
If a user is a member of Users & ReadOnly, they would get read/write to Folder A. As permissions are cumulative.
    If you did the following:
    Folder A
    ACL:
    ReadOnly : R
    ReadOnly: Deny Write
    Users: Read/Write
The users in ReadOnly would be denied write, as it overrides the cumulative permissions.

  • Delete and Write Access for PA infotypes

    Hi Gurus,
Our clients require managing Write and Delete access separately for PA infotypes. Example, an employee can have Write access (able to save values in infotypes) but s/he will not be able to Delete this infotype record one it has been Saved.
    How do we implement this?
In the standard authorizatio object for HR master data, P_ORGIN you only have M, R and W. If an employee was given a W access, s/he'll also have Delete access.
Is there a way on how to do this?
    <removed by moderator>.
    Thanks.

    Olekan,
First of all, if your managing PA Infotypes, you're also using the P_PERNR object authorization.
Next, you're right. For SAP, the Write and Delete permissions are the same authorization level (W).
To avoid build a "Z" solution, i suggest you use the "block" permission in one of these ways:
    1) assign the S authorization level (Symmetric) for write access using the Symmetric Double Verification Principle; that is, user 1 do changes to an infotype and data is saved with "blocked" status, then user 2 save or delete data entered by user 1. Another day, user 2 do changes to an infotype, then data is saved with "blocked" status and only user 1 will be able to save or delete data entered by user 1.
    2) assign the E and D authorization level for write access using the Asymmetrical Double Verification Principle; that is, if user 1 has E, and user 2 has D, then the user 1 ever maintain data with "blocked" status and never will be able to save or delete data. And user 2 ever will be able to "unblocked" data (for save or delete) and never will be able to maintain data without "blocked" status.

  • Read and Write from Remote Shared directory

    Hello everyone,
I'm working on an enterprise portal. One of the things i was asked to do is access a remote directory (like "\\machine\share\") and be able to, at least, list the files, download to the portal user any of them, and be able to upload some as well. Also my goal is to create dinamycally a directory inside the shared one for every record I insert into a database for, for example, creating a course (each course has an attachment of files with the schedules, curriculum, etc. in pdf or doc files).
Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to star this? are there any API's, packages or something like that that i can use?
    Thank you in advance.

  • Read and Write Permissions in Dreamweaver CS3

I have searhed the web endlessly for what seems like a simple question? How do you set read and write permissions for an upload folder in dreamweaver cs3?
I finally came accross one forum which described.
You go to the files panel and change the drop down menu from "Local View" to "Remote View".
Then you select the upload folder you created and right click on it.
A pop up menu appears and you select "set permissions"
This is where I am ok to. My defualt permissions are set to 666. Does anyone know the number to set it to if i would like visitors to my site to be able tp upload files?
ps I am using windows vista and dreamweaver cs3.

My defualt permissions are set to 666. Does anyone know the number to set it to if i would like visitors to my site to be able tp upload files?
Try 775 first, but you will probably need to use 777, which is the least secure set of permissions. Normally, if you want to allow people to upload to your website, you should create a login system and allow only registered users to upload to a folder that has permissions set to such a weak level. Otherwise, you could lay yourself open to all sorts of abuse.

I am not sure why you get that error. One thing you can do is a SMC reset then try to format it again. However that being said I'm not fan of WD external HD's primarily because we see a lot of troubles with them on Macs. Their internal HD's are fine so that narrows it down to their enclosures. If the problem persists I'd return the drive and buy one of the following:
OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro series
    Lacie Quadra d2 series
    G-Tech G series
    SMC RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • New Outlook 2013 Installation - How to configure for default pop email and access exchange 2003 server for shared folders only

I have successfully installed and configured outlook 2013 to access my pop.integra.net email accounts.  We have an 2003 exchange server we use for shared folders which I am having difficulty accessing.
My preference would be to set up my access to the exchange server and use the same data folders for email as are in use for my pop email account.  In outlook 2003 this was simple, but in 2007 on up it seems this feature has been hobbled.  Is there
a workaround to get both accounts to use the same database?
Next issue is if I use the Mail client wizard under Control Panel to set up access to the exchange server - everything looks fine but when launching outlook I receive the following 2 error messages:
"The resource that you are trying to use is located on an unsupported version of Microsoft Exchange.  Contact your e-mail administrator for assistance."
"Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened.  Your Microsoft Exchange administrator has blocked the version of Outlook that your are using.  Contact your administrator for assistance."
Obviously the optimal solution is to upgrade the Exchange Server - assuming that is not an option - are there any workarounds?
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Downgraded to Office 2007.
So now have a new Windows 8.1 laptop with outlook 2007 installed.
From what I have been told this should allow me to connect to the Exchange2003 server
I set up the pop account - works fine
set up the exchange account through Mail.exe and am unable to launch outlook.
    "Microsoft Exchange is Unavailable"
"Retry - Work Offline - Cancel"
    Then
"Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook.  Cannot open the Outlook Window.  The set of folders cannot be opened.  The information store could not be opened."
The data file path is the same for both the pop account and the exchange account:
    C:\Users\Scott\app data\local\microsoft\outlook\outlook.pst
How do I get this to work?

  • Modbus Ethernet read and write to a Eurotherm 6180XIO Modbus server using LV8.2 shared variables

I am having EXTREME difficulty trying to establish communications with a Modbus device using LV8.2 shared variables.  The device is a Eurotherm 6180XIO Datalogger configured as a Modbus master.  The PC and a cFP-1804 are slaves.  All IP addresses are set correctly.  This approach using shared variables would seem simple, but I can't find any examples or proper guidance on how to get it working.  I am trying to avoid having to mess around with TCP/IP, OPC, or any other old-fashioned method.
I have read many threads on related topics but none directly apply to this situation.  I have created a library containing a Modbus I/O server and shared variables bound to read and write holding registers.  I have followed all recommended tips for creating such variables but I can neither read or write data.  All data types are U16 due to Modbus protocol limitations.  I have also applied the LV x10 factor in the most significant digit in the register offset (6 digits instead of 5).
I have a cFP-1804 on the same network which reads into the datalogger OK.  The registers I use are 31000 (for CH0 on module 0, 31002 for CH1, etc) and the data can be read as FLOAT32.  I have updated the firmwate on the 1804 to the latest level.  I cannot even get shared variables to read SGL values.  Using registers 301001 for CH0 and 301002 for CH1 I can only read U16 values, and not a 2-word SGL.
Third party Modbus simulation software is able to write to and read from registers very easily, but not LabVIEW.
    Some questions are:
    - do I use a Modbus master or slave as an I/O server in the library as a target for binding the shared variables?
    - is there some other wierd translation in register offsets between LabVIEW and traditional Modbus?
    - is this actually possible using shared variables or am I wasting my time?

Sending the whole 60-character string using a string or array would be the most efficient.  I have tried both methods, and these only cause the datalogger to flag a message log but no text is displayed.
For a string variable, I have used the following binding "My Computer\Modbus Test.lvlib\ModbusServer6180\442305", where ModbusServer6180 is a Modbus I/O server configured with the logger IP address, and 42304 is the register offset at the start of the text block in the logger.  I need to write to 30 consecutive registers starting with this one.  I am not using buffering and have not enabled single writer.
Can anyone confirm whether this method should work in 8.2?
Does the string need a special termination character?

  • Open file for reading and allow access by others

How can I open a file for reading and still allow others to access (read and write) the file?  I plan to keep this file open for the duration of my program and close it at the end.  However while my program is running another program will need access to the file so it can write to it.  I may be wrong, but I dont think that setting the appropriate permission will solve the problem...  Thank you for your time.

    hi jmcbee,
I think as long as "readers" open a file as "ReadOnly", then the OS (at least Windows) will allow another process to open and write to the same file without a problem.  It's been a while since I've done this - maybe 7 years - and I may have opened the "writer" first, though doubt it makes a difference.
    Have you tried?

  • Problem with air read and write smb shared directory of file

    hi, everyone.
I'm want to access smb directory of file,And to read and
write operation, I would like to ask how I should do?
    Thanks!

You can't access any OS facility nor execute arbitrary command.
So the best solution is to mount samba directory BEFORE run your AIR application; you eventually can create a script that mount samba (and asks password) and then run you AIR application.

I'm trying to share a folder between users on a single mac.  I want both users to be able to read and write so the folder stays current on both accounts.  I put the folder in "shared," set permissions on folder so other user can read and write, enabled file sharing, but can't find the folder on the second user's account.  Any help?

Did you log out of one account and into the other or just used Fast user switching?
Is the permissions set to anyone?
When you move data to teh Shared folder is it copied or just moved?
If copied then it's not a folder both can access, just a way station like a USB thumb drive that things are coped too and off of likely.
You can run this #5 on each user account to reset the user permissions once they are taken back out of the Shared folder
