Read and write on external hard drive
I have bought my macbook air just yesterday.
I have an iOmega external hard drive with all files from my previous computer (an HP with Windows on it).
Now I would like to open and also edit and save the files on this external hard drive.
However, this does not work. I can open files, but cannot edit them. And I cannot save files to the external hard drive.
I have read a lot of things on the internet about Macfusion, but since I am new to Mac and not much of a computer-person, can someone give me like a step-by-step guide of how to handle this problem?

Drives used for Windows have NTFS partitions and MBR (master boot record) disk format.
Mac uses GUID disk format and HFS+ partitions. Mac, without additional software, cannot write to NTFS partitions, but only read them.
You will need to reformat the harddrive to GUID/HFS+ which would delete all information on it. Or buy some software that allows Mac to write to NTFS like NTFS-3G.

hey all, this has been really frustrating for me today. i want to be able to write to an external HDD that's formatted in NTFS. today i find out it isn't possible to write to this file system on a Mac and that on FAT32 it is possible. however, FAT32 can't address files larger than 4GB so this hurts me a lot. are there any other file systems that'll allow me to read and write from a Mac? my goal was to use freeNAS to build a NAS with an old tower and connect my external hard drives to it, but if i can't write to them this may not be possible.

I just got a new mac and use my external hard drive to save all my images to but whenever I go to save my photo to my hard drive it says I do not have write access....Whats wrong how do i fix this or do i need a new hard drive??@

I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. I have two external hard drives. One is my Time Machine backup drive. The other I use for external storage of files (documents, photos, movies, etc). Can I set Time Machine to backup BOTH my Mac hard drive and my other external hard drive?
Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

How do I change permissions from read only on my external hard drive?
I'm a new convert from PC to MAC and I'm kicking myself because it's been **** ever since.
My music and business documents are all kept on an external hard drive and that hard drive is NTSF.
My MacBook is reading the whole drive as read only. I'm trying to add my huge library to the cloud but it's not reading it all.
How can I convert the drive to FAT without losing everything. I have 91 gigs of music that as a dance teacher, cannot afford to lose.

If you are going to use the external drive only with Macs now, you can consider the option to format the external drive with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". In this case, only Macs will read the external drive, but compatibility will be better.

First of all, note that all external drives are compatible with Macs. If you find external drives which come as "for Macs", that's because they come formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
In that case, you will be able to transfer the files from the NTFS drive. Note that you can read NTFS drives and you can copy files from the NTFS drive to your Mac or other disks. The only thing you can't do is copy files to the NTFS drive -
I am planning on using my time capsule as a network and essentially an external hard drive - not just back up, is this ok?
Most users should use the Time Capsule for backups. This assumes that "original" copies of your data are on the computer and backups of this data are stored on the Time Capsule.
If either the Time Capsule or the hard drive on your computer fails, there are at least copies of your important data on the other drive.
If you are asking if you can place "original" files on the Time Capsule, do you have a plan to backup those files?
If the Time Capsule drive has a problem....and your only copy of your important data is on the Time Capsule....you will lose everything.
If you are asking if this is OK, the answer for most folks would be "no".

Hallo , my question is ;whenever I delete a photo and restore it through Time machine and Western digital external hard drive , I am able to restore the photo but not the titles and descriptions . Western Digital inform me that it isn't their external hard drive problem and suggest that it is an Apple software problem ?
I am using a Macbook 4.1 , with Mac OSX 10.5.8 . I photo 7.1.5 , last modifie4d 01/05/2010 -universal . Should I be upgrading Iphoto ?

I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles,descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .

Can I import and copy from external hard drive into organizer? Under Get Photos, I select import from folders/files but after browsing to the external hard drive the copy option is disabled/greyed out. I there a method to import and copy?
That would be mounted as an internal drive and hence the corresponding option is not checked during Import.
Once you import the media form this drive, you can select all and go for File >> Copy/Move files option and copy them wherever you want to.

How to edit (read/write) an external hard drive that is attached to a router
Hi everyone.
I have Macbook Air (2013) with OSX 10.9 Maverics, and Netgear WNDR4500 router with WD external hard drive attached to it. My problem is that I don’t have writing permissions. When I’m trying to change something in the hard drive, it says “The operation can’t be completed, because you don’t have necessary permission”. Under Get info / Sharing & Permissions, it just says “You have custom access”, and there is no option to change privileges to “Read & Write”.
I would appreciate if anyone could help me with this.

I would guess that you'd be able to write to the drive once you have it attached via a cable (FW, USB, etc) to your Mac (not your router). -

So please suggest me easier way that how can i share files between macs and pc as my friends uses pc and in future i really want to share my data with them without any hustle and i dont wanna loose my data in futureYou can format the HDD to a common one like ExFAT or Fat32 but a reformat will delete all data off of the HDD.
Your other option is to use a third party software such as Paragon or Tuxera that will allow you to write to a NFTS formatted HDD.

Can't write to external hard drive set up by Windows
We have a 300gb Maxtor external hard drive. I had set it up using the Windows laptop I use for work.
The Mini that we have can read, but not write to, this external drive. I just went back and set the Security properties to allow Full Control for the Everyone group. That did not work; the drive is still read-only for the Mini.
Additionally, when it's hooked up to the Mini, the hard drive starts spinning for no apparent reason. When it's doing that, you cannot eject the hard drive. It will whir for several minutes; at times, we've had to reboot the Mini to get the thing to stop.
Is there a Mac OS setting somewhere that needs to be changed to allow the Mini to write to the drive?
Why is the drive spinning for no apparent reason? Is there something we can look at to find out what's happening with it?
Any other suggestions for fixing the problem? I'd like to avoid reformatting it, if possible....We have a 300gb Maxtor external hard drive. I had set

Sounds like the drive is formatted in NTFS. Under OSX, your Mac will be able to read, but not write, to an NTFS formatted drive.
If you format as HFS or HFS+, the Mac will be able to readd/write to the disk, but the Windows box will not be able to recognize the disk.
Since it is a 300gb drive, FAT will not work (FAT does not recognize drives that large).
It must be formatted as FAT32.
It can be formatted as such on either the windows box or the Mac.
You can partition the disk, one HFS+, one FAT32, but the windows box still will not be able to recognize the HFS partition, and the Mac will be able to read/write both.
So...for maximum compatibility and cross-platform usage, format the drive as FAT32.
As for as the periodic drive spin, it's possible Spotlight is updating it's index.
