Read any good Mac books?

Can someone recommend a good book on Mac use? My 90 day warranty is about to expire and I don't want to keep bothering people on the discussion forum with basic questions. For example, they just turned me on to doing p-ram resets which was very useful and assume there are many similar bits that I should know.

David Pogue's Mac OS X: The Missing Manual is a treasure trove, you should definitely read that one.

FYI: With Amazon URLs you only need the first bits and not all of the tracking/referral info. This will work too:

  • External hard drive can't be read on my Mac Book Pro

I have a had drive which is Mac OS formatted and it has always worked well with my Mac Book Pro but I had a program crash on me and I was working out of my hard drive. I force quited the program and tried to eject the hard drive but it seemed that program was still acessing the hard drive, I had not saved anything and nor did I want to and I didn't know how long whatever was happening would take, plus as far as I was concerned the program was closed, the windows were gone and my files closed, so I switched of my hard drive anyway. Now when I switch on the hard drive my Mac says it cannot read it and I don't know how to get it to read it again. I tried verify and repair and it says it can't stating. I don't know what to do and I desperately need acess to my hard drive. Can anyone please help?
The error message I recieve in Disk Utility in case it helps:
    Verify and Repair volume "disk2s1"

    Invalid B-tree node size
    Volume check failed.

    Invalid B-tree node size
    Volume check failed.
I'll expand on the last post a little.
Disk Utility cannot repair that error.
If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility for the repair. I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy. Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand. It has repaired every little and big issue I have ever had with my three Macs.
If you have a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install will also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!
    Good Luck! DALE
    p.s. Here's a rewiew of DiskWarrior 4.

  • Recommend any good flash books...

    Hi,
I want to learn how to connect flash CS3 to databases/dynamic
information etc....Can anyone recommend any good books. I just
bought Flash and PHP Bible but don't think much of it (it keeps
referring to a companion website that doesn't exist - the book only
came out this month). I want to learn how to connect databases with
flash, get dynamic content and things like that. Have any of you
guys used such a book that you thought was great?
    Cheers...
    Ben.

There are a lot of good online tutorials and such. If you
    really want to do
it right, learn to use AMFPHP, a remoting gateway for PHP.
    It'll make your
life much easier if you do any fair amount of database work
    with Flash. I
still use LoadVars for simple forms and such, but for
    anything bigger I use
    AMFPHP / remoting.

  • Can anybody recommend any good ejb book?

    Hi,
I am looking for good ejb books, can anybody recommend any, please?
I would like to have a good book to start with and then another book which could compliment the basics.

A lot of effort went into the on-line review of "Mastering EJB 2" by Ed Roman et. al. at www.theserverside.com. The Server Side participants constantly reviewed the book while it was being written! I think it is the best book on EJBs, but don't take my word for it: check it out. You can download the book in non-printable PDF format from www.theserverside.com under the Resources tab. You'll have to sign up (for free) to download the book.

  • Read any good books lately?

    Hi designers,
I don't have much of a book budget so I want to get one that I can actually use.
I was thinking about something related to aspectJ. My friends doing their graduate degreees are like.. aspect this, pointcut there, and i'm like.. huh?
but what would you recommend? No J2EE books please. I really liked the anti patterns book. I figure the people lurking in the Patterns and OO forum would be the best place to ask about software development books. I would also be up for something about 'testing'... as I know how to make unit tests but i'm having trouble testing our GUI... those things are hard to test. Thanks!

I was in the book store last week and several cover junit and at least one covers other frameworks like nunit. I do not recall any that covered HttpUnit though.

  • Any good Java books with Business Examples ?

Can anyone recommend a Beginner Java book that has some good Business Examples ?
(Don't recommend the SUN tutorial, as their examples are more for the rocket scientist).

Not sure what you mean by business examples, but here goes.
Check out Wrox for some excellent books - not all excellent.
Check ot samspublishing for the same.
I have a superb book called Learning java (O'Reilly) that I would recommend to anyone. It lacks complete examples, which I usually rely on, but is a major piece of work for the novice - I have found a large part of this book on the web also, can't remember where.
My very favourite read is Wrox - J2EE Java server pages
I would stilll recomend avoiding books by Manning which are generally incomplete and point to other books they have published for this other info.
    best,
    Kev

  • Adobe reader freezes on mac book [tiger 10.4]

After opening a pdf in the reader it freezes and won't respond to any command [tiger 10.4]

A PowerBook G4 is not a machine with an Intel processor. Unfortunately, I don't think CS4 will work on your machine, regardless of what OS you have on it.

  • I bought any new Mac book Pro which doesn't have a CD-ROM. I need to download Photoshop elements 10.

Where can I download the Photoshop elements 10 software?

http://prodesigntools.com/photoshop-elements-10-direct-download-links-pse-premiere-pre.htm l. Follow their 'Very Important Instructions' exactly. Skip a step and you'll likely get an authorization error or download the current version.

  • Any good Toplink books

For example hibernate has "Hibernate in Action", similarly do we have
    anything for Toplink?

Most of our efforts have been on the product and its associated documentation.
The Pro EJB 3: Java Persistence API book was authored by an architect and developer on our team. We have a preview chapter available.
I am involved in some book efforts. Once there are public I will make sure these are announced here.

  • Problem with adobe reader when installing on mac book. "Internal error occured".

Both me and my friend installed Adobe reader on our mac books this week, and it doesn't work. The only thing that happens when we try to open the program is an text message with "Internal error occured". And that's it. The PDF-file is not the problem, and I have the latest version of Mac operating system, so that's not the problem eighter. Mac support told me to contact you. Please help me as soon as possible. Thanks! /Amanda

  • "Good" beginners book to Oracle DB administration

I am as new as it gets to Oracle and I need a good beginners book for database administration. During my searches online I have found mostly poor reviews on all the Oracle DBA beginners books I've found, including Oracles 10g for beginners own publication. The one book I've found that is highly supported, but not necessarily for the newborn, but a must have is "Oracle Database 10g Insider Solutions". I was wondering if anyone could recommend any good books for beginners, that are good books, and for beginners. Those seemed to be the two most common problems in all the reviews I read. The software I'm going to be using is Oracle 10g.

Please do not consider reading any other Oracle books before reading the Oracle documentation. Tom Kyte offers a good list here http://www.oracle.com/technology/oramag/oracle/06-mar/o26asktom.html. See the section "Where to begin". I also strongly advice reading his book Export Oracle Database Architecture for fundamentals, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1590595300/sr=8-1/qid=1154697462/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-8631501-9759232?ie=UTF8.

  • Java: Any good?

Hello, I'd just like to know if anyone could recommend any good Java books to read. I'm quite competent in programming in C, although I haven't really done much C++. As far as I know, Java is good for writing programs that can be run on most platforms without rebuilding, although it is relatively slow compared to an equivalent C program.
Also, could anyone provide a brief comparison of the features of Java vs. C?

The thing is, I actually started programming in Visual Basic (Oh the tragedy) and soon got to know all the little niggles that makes it difficult to write anything like efficient code.
I'm not a fan of VB, but it does have it's use; especially in the area of rapid prototyping (and converting the world into dedicated drones that follow the queen bee found in the Gates of Bill)...ahem...sorry, flashback, must remind myself that resistence is NOT futile.
The main reason I'd like to get into Java is because I've written a few programs in C for Windows that could (should) work on other platforms to do tasks centered around file format conversion.
Sounds like a perfect reason to use Java. Like I said earlier, knowing which tool to use for a given set of circumstances is key.
Given that there are security restrictions on what Java can and can't do, I'm wondering if it's worth bothering, or should I simply focus on making fully portable (Headers and all) C code.
Technically, there aren't any "security restrictions on what Java can and can't do". You may be speaking of the sand-box associated with applets. However, the "restrictions" are configurable. Rights may be granted to Java programs (including applets if they are signed) to do pretty much anything usefull. Another very huge ++ for Java. In fact, I wish Sun would call it security considerations rather restrictions since it gives consideration to the needs/desires of the targets of your code. In other words, I can say "Hey buddy, I like your nice little file conversion utility, but I'm not gonna allow you to violate my private parts...Ryan"...er...there I go again with the flashbacks.

  • Why is Logic 9 on mac book pro 13 inch so unstable?

I have a 2.4 Ghz i5 4GB macbook pro and experience lots of glitches and freezes using Logic Pro 9.
Never happened before on any previous mac books I owned. Makes me worried because I also use it on stage and Apple never, ever updates Logic 9!
    thx!
    Nutville

By the model with the fastest cpu you can afford with the standard ram and hard drive because those 2 things can be upgraded by the user. That is if you are looking at the standard mac notebooks and not the retina models.
I agree with the above post that a 15" with discrete graphics would be a better choice for your needs.
With whichever model you choose factor in the cost of the extended applecare warranty because to fix any mac computer once the warranty is over is very expensive. So much so that in some cases it would be more cost effective to just buy a new computer with newer technology then to fix one that is 1+ to 3 years old. With the applecare extended warranty you will get at least 3 years use out of it with no worries of a repair bill should anything go wrong.
Note that no apple warranty covers any accidental damages. From dropping it to spilling water on it or general misuse or abusive treatment of the system.
