**Read Before Posting** Intel iMac FAQ (Windows, Speed, Compatibility, etc)

Hi all -
In an effort to keep down clutter and repeated postings, I'd like to start this FAQ. Please, feel free to add to my basic topics.
• First, the Intel Core Duo is Intel's Dual-Core chip, which is (as I understand it) a better version of the Pentium M series. Read more on Intel's Official Page.
• Universal is Apple's term for applications that were built on the Universal Binary - which means they work natively, at full speed on BOTH Power PC (G4, G5, etc) and Intel processors.
• Rosetta is Apple's emulation technology, which seamlessly runs in the background. This will emulate some of the older PowerPC-based applications that have not yet been released with Universal Binaries or released natively for Intel processors.
• Windows. Apple is doing nothing to prevent it from being installed, but it is not supported in any way. It will most likely be tough to do, as (I don't believe) Windows can do anything with HFS+ drives, let alone BOOT from one. You would need to reformat and partition at the VERY least, as I don't know if Disk Utility can format in the Windows file system. Other drivers (such as the iSight and Airport Wireless) will most likely not be provided, either.
• Other PCs. Mac OS X will not be able to be legally installed on any machines other than Apple Macintosh machines.
Hope this helps a little,
Kyle-

More details found on this site about Classic and Rosetta:
http://daringfireball.net/2005/06/classicnotsupported
Rosetta is designed to translate currently shipping applications that run on a PowerPC with a G3 processor and that are built for Mac OS X.
Rosetta does not run the following:
Applications built for Mac OS 8 or 9
Code written specifically for AltiVec
Code that inserts preferences in the System Preferences pane
Applications that require a G4 or G5 processor
Applications that depend on one or more kernel extensions
Kernel extensions
Bundled Java applications or Java applications with JNI libraries that can’t be translated
Classic is just not supported.
It is clear that apps that need the G4, G5 or Altivec Code won't run under Rosetta.

  • Purpose of this Forum (Server General) *** Please Read Before Posting ***

Welcome to Windows Server General Forum !
This is an English TechNet forum, Please post your queries in English !
    Scope:
The name "General" has a very broad significance and sometimes that might lead to some ambiguities.
The scope of this forum is to answer General "Server Administration" related queries pertaining
to Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 / R2 and 2012  operating systems.
Again, "Server Administration" has innumerous aspects and at times it becomes bit difficult to categorize
    them.
We try to answer your questions in General or provide troubleshooting support in depth as and when necessary
based on the context of the query.
Questions could be related to AD, GP, Server OS related Queries/issues/errors, general troubleshooting etc…
list is too huge and it's highly difficult to elaborate them here :-)
We understand that this scope and purpose can be a little confusing, we apologize for any confusion.
If you might not know the scope or purpose of this forum, we'll redirect you to read this thread if we need
to explain how this forum works.
    Out of Scope:
Queries on following (but not limited to…) are Out of scope in this forum.
    Scripting
    SBS
    - Small Business Server
    IIS
    Coding/Development:
    Windows Client Operating Systems
    Exchange
    Server
    Lync
    TFS
    SQL

    Visual
    Studio
    .Net
    SharePoint:
    SCCM, SCOM
    Third Party Applications
    etc…
We might (but do not claim to) answer some of the out of scope questions directly here. If we do,
then it's just a Bonus ! and it's not the purpose or in the scope of what this forum provides.
    Moving Threads:
It may happen that, your question might have been moved to this forum in an attempt by another moderator from
a different forum to help you find the correct forum or we might move your threads to an appropriate forum as and when necessary.
If a community member gave you the URL/link of a specific Technet forum, then you may request a move to that
specified forum (If a link to the forum category is specified; you'll still need to pick a specific forum from that category) or thread will be moved to the appropriate forum if a Moderator is around.
    NOTE:
We cannot move a thread to another Microsoft forum that's not in the TechNet Forum System such as ASP.net,
IIS.net and Answers.Microsoft.com etc… So we can only provide links to those forums.
    Marking Answers:
We propose a reply (such as a link about where to go ask your question) to a recent question as an answer,
and then we will usually wait one week (~7 days) before we mark it as the answer. We prefer you (the Asker/OP - Original Poster) to mark the answer, but we do not require it if you abandon the thread for a long time.
If you (the Asker/OP - Original Poster) refuse to let us propose and mark an answer (without telling us why
and helping us figure out the alternatives/workarounds), then we might need to lock a thread or move it to the Off Topic forum.

Welcome to the Windows 7 discussion board.
As above, this is a new discussion board created solely for Windows 7. I am sure many of you would be eagerly anticipating the launch on Oct 22nd. Some of you may already have questions about using existing Creative products on this operating system.
Here are some of the Knowledge Base articles & links that you might find useful:

  • Adobe Reader plugin on Intel iMac... menu bar gone when viewing pdf?!?!?

I had Adobe Reader 7.0.5 on my iMac G5 and when I clicked on a pdf file, it opened in a new window with a menu bar at the top. Since migrating to my Intel iMac yesterday, the menu bar is gone though pdf pages display... just with blank space where the menu used to be. I downloaded v7.0.8 and installed and the same problem. I have the prefs set to view pdf files in Safari and, again, they view... just no menu bar! Any idea how to fix this?

As far as I know, Adobe Reader (even v7.0.8) isn't Universal yet, which means it [the plugin] probably won't run natively on your Intel iMac unless you run Safari under Rosetta.

  • Running intel imac under windows?

i just bought a new imac intel dual core and im extremely new to the mac world and not to great with computers so i was wondering if i could get some help with this.
i was reading up on some forums and found out that the imac's with the intel technology can run in either windows or mac OS X and i just have a couple questions right now.
    1) how do i get my mac to run under the windows OS?
    2) is it possible for me to switch between the mac and windows OS's?
i would really appreciate your honesty.

I am going to set up my iMac, on Saturday, to run Windows. I was originally going to purchase VirtualPC but out came BootCamp . . . Give it a read. Switching between the 2 OS's does not really happen. You boot off of one or the other, however you can move files (again, check the restrictions [30Gig]) between the 2 OS's.

  • Intel iMac running Windows

I am going into a Manufacturing Engineering Technology progam at college in the fall. I will be using the CAD design program which only runs in Windows.
I would really like to run the iMac Intel version with the Windows operating system on it. I understand that CAD can have glitches and was wondering if anyone has run it in these circumstances.
    Thanks for any info.

Use Apple Boot Camp to install WindowsXP in a partition of your hard drive.
Then, you'll be able to install CAD and run it natively on your iMac.
A specific help about running Windows on Intel-based Macs can be found in this forum.

  • New Announcement Guidelines (READ BEFORE POSTING)

    Hello,
I am attempting to improve the way we share importnat news via the forums.  As you can see I have added the "glance" mod to the index page of the forums.  glance syndicates threads from certain boards.  Currently the two boards syndicated are this Announcements board and the Package and Security Advisory board.
Firstly I want to revamp the Package and Security Advisory board.  I want people who have upgrade problems to post in a different area and I want to provide an area for TUs and Devs to announce Package and Security Advisories!  I think this is maybe best done via the current Announcements board, necessitating a name change.
Another suggested change to the Announcements board includes tagging of threads regarding their content e.g. [pkg] for a package advisory, [sec] for a security advisory and [news] for news, etc.  Threads should also be tagged with the date.
    e.g. [news 200509 - 14] Changes to Announcements board
And before anyone points it out, yup, this is a rip off of the way gentoo-forums manage their announcements but it is a basis to start from and I think we can do better!
Lastly using phpbb to mark threads as announcements when they are in the annoucements forum seems a little asinine - we should stick to stickies for all but the most high profile information.

    G'Day Dibble
Excellent idea.  I believe if there is a better way out there, and you don't use it then the door is open to critisizm.  I congratulate you for taking the steps to enhance this forum
    Cheers

    Thank You!!
