Read emails on the external display

Hey I just got the flip and I can't figure out how to preview and read  emails on the external display. The new message icon appears, but I can't get the message subject or anything else to pull up... Can anyone tell me how to make that work?

  • When i connect my mac book pro to an external display using a VGA cable and adaptor, the external display splits into several different columns of the same screen overlapping one another. Does anybody have any ideas as to why this happens?

I have used different VGA to mini port adaptors, different VGA cables and connected them to different external monitors and prjectors but the same thing happens. I am starting to think there may be a problem with the macbook itself however, when i have used a HDMI lead and adaptor to external monitors the external display is fine.

    Hi there LDIMERY,
You may find the troubleshooting steps in the article below helpful.

  • How do I turn off the external display screen on my MBP even after I disconnect the second screen?

I connected my MBP to my television via the HDMI port to watch a movie. Whenever I have a second display connected I have different wallpapers for each screen. After the movie was over I disconnected the cable and started surfing the web, and I always have safari full screen so I have to three finger swipe to go back to my desktop. After disconnecting the hdmi cable, the external display screen became part of the three finger swipe in full screen mode. I can swipe to go from safari to second display screen (not connected to anything) and then to my desktop.
My question is how do I get rid of the dog-gone external display screen? I am getting tired of having to swipe more than once from full screen to my desktop.

Disregard this question, I figured it out. I just had to go in a delete the other desktops that showed up, how they got there in the first place, I'm not sure but I will visit the apple store to ask some questions.
Mods you can close and/or delete this whole convo.

  • When MagSafe unplugged, the external display and laptop need to be restart

Whenever I unplug my MagSafe when using dual-monitors, my MacBook and External monitor need to turned off/restarted. Why is this?

So, you're saying that when you disconnect the power cord (MagSafe) BOTH of your displays either go completely dark while the MacBook is still running or freeze (static image, nothing gets updated) or begin to display distorted video. Then when the displays enter one of these states they remain dysfunctional until you power cycle each one (which would mean that for the MacBook's display you'd have to restart the MacBook). Otherwise, are you suggesting that your MacBook crashes when you disconnect the MagSafe? Also, do you have to reconnect the MagSafe before you can restart the displays (if this is the case, then are you sure that your battery just isn't "dead")?
What type of connector are you using for the external display? Is it Mini DisplayPort, DVI, or VGA? If DVI, is it dual-link?
In any case, without additional details I'd guess that you have a grounding problem between your external display and the MacBook. This shouldn't happen unless there is a problem with your video cables or adapters or with the ports on either the MacBook or your external display. Have you tried connecting the 3.5mm audio output on your MacBook to an audio input on the external display (as a test to provide another grounding path)? Also, is your MacBook power supply plugged into the same AC outlet as is your external display?
I guess the MagSafe connector could also be at fault if it is shorting to ground when you remove it from the port on the MacBook. What happens if you disconnect the power supply directly from the AC plug and then disconnect the MagSafe?
Lastly, is there any chance that you are getting a static electric discharge when you touch the MacBook to remove the MagSafe connector?

  • About the external display adapter...

I just purchased my iBook G4 on-line and finally got the external display adapter. I was wondering if there is a way to have the external display adapter on the laptop and functioning with the external display while the laptop screen is closed?
This would be similar to docking a laptop with other PC brands. When I get into my new apartment this will be useful as the laptop will be able to completely replace my Windows machine as the desktop unit that I can take with me. If this can be done, how do you do it?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
You should not use the iBook with the lid closed. Apple has never really said exactly why, but they clearly say not to do it here:

  • HT3131 Why doesn't Apple mention using the Display control panel's "Arrange" feature to move the menu from the Macbook's display to the EXTERNAL display? THAT'S the real answer to make Clamshell mode work, but it's not mentioned in any Apple documentation

After a recent OS update, Clamshell mode quit working. I couldn't find any Apple documentation
that would help. So many people were stabbing around in the dark, until I finally found the following information
that is lacking from any Apple documentation that I've been able to find.
Here's what I found to be the most helpful:
Forcing a MacBook to use the External Monitor:
I tried about everything: Rebooting, switching off completely, removing and inserting the Thunderbolt->HDMI adapter etc.
The only thing that finally worked was the following:
    1. Take it out of the dock and connect to Power and HDMI to the TV.
Shut down the Mac. Turn it on and close the lid. It will now boot up on the external screen.
Log onto the Mac, and put it in sleep mode (Option-Command-Eject).
Put it back into the dock and wake it up with the spacebar.
It should be OK now... until the next update...
Note: One indication that you’re going to have extreme trouble with this is when (occasionally and without reason) the Mirroring Options icon shows up on the top icon bar.
    Other useful commands:
“Command + F1” puts PC in Two-Screen MIRROR mode.
If it’s REALLY being stubborn, do the following (Clamshell Must be open
    to see the arrangement tab.):
In System Preferences > Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor (Yes, I know, it’s hard to grab ahold of it...) That will make your EXTERNAL monitor your main screen.
You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV, make sure it’s asleep (Option+Command+Eject buttons) or your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.

  • I have a MacBook Pro 17 inch and I just destroyed the screen.  Can anyone tell me the keystrokes to turn on the external display as primary?

I have a 17-inch MacBook Pro with a destroyed screen.  (My son put it on the top of his car and drove off and it fell off.)  Can anyone tell me the keystrokes to make an external monitor the primary monitor?  I can see only the upper left side of the laptop screen so I CAN select system preferences.  I can then arrow over to system preferences and down to make selections I cannot see.  I don't know then what to do or IF I can make the choices needed to make the external monitor primary when all I can do is make keystrokes on items I cannot see.  It's an older (about 2008) MacBook Pro and I would like to use the external monitor to see to connect an external hard drive and download files to install on a new MacBook.  My son might know the iOS but I don't.

    • I don't know then what to do or IF I can make the choices needed to make the external monitor primary
This is the left side of System Preferences in OS 10.8.3. (if that is not what the MBP is running post back). By the way, if you can grab the top of that pane you could move it over to the top far left. - Same for any pane.
Do this with the external monitor connected and powered on.
You need to click on Displays., and then grope for Arrangement and click there.
When you get there, the two screens are shown.
The trick is to grab the white stripe (on the left in this image) and move it to the other rectangle. You do not have to position it exactly, it snaps into place when it gets close.

  • Does Reader IOS have native external display support?

Without the jailbraking method, can Adobe Reader for IOS natively display to an external display?
    Cheers

On ipad 2 and later, all apps support mirroring using the iPad VGA cable. We've tested this configuration and it works well in our testing. You should also be able to use AirPlay (configured in the iPad settings).

  • Adobe Reader to mirror on External Display

How do you get Reader to display (mirror) on an external display using VGA? I read a reply on another posting which says to set the AirPlay settings. Where do I do that? Please provide a walkthrough.
Thanks much for your prompt reply.

If you are using VGA, you'll need an adapter:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC552ZM/B
You shouldn't need to make any settings changes. It should "just work".

  • Using Mailx to read emails - Simplify the view

    Hi,
I've just started using the mailx program, from heirloom-mailx in the core repo, to send and read my emails. This is great, no more extra cruft that I have to wait load and I can pipe any results of commands straight to my inbox. My queery is regarding the format of messages. Is there anyway I can not display the headers of emails when I read them?
I dont mean the "headers" that are displayed when the program is run to show the new messages, I mean the info when you open a message, like "From", "Delivered-To", "Return-Path" etc. Some of these are useful, but some are so long that my message starts right down the bottom of the screen. The best solution would be to customise this to display only "From", "To" "Date" and then the message, but as I've just seen all that on the original screen, I could manage without.
    Thanks for your help.

I just want to read emails, can I display just some of the email header, or none, and then the message in the mailx program?

  • Is there a keyboard shortcut to activate the external display port??

My Macbook pro recently took in moisture from the bottom, which fried my display. Through some testing, I have determined that the monitor is the only damage and the computer still works fine. When I connect an external display I can only see the standard wallpaper with no icons. So, I have a computer that I urgently need to access but can't see. Is there a keyboard shortcut to activate an external display?? Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't have the latest MaBook Pro, the Fn F7 key generally toggles the dual display settings to mirror, which would let you the default screen.
Your external connection defaults to a desktop extended display.

  • Re: Adobe Reader XI and the panel display

On the Reader XI, panel usually has 3 options "Tools", "Fill & Sign" and "Comment".  The "Tools" option is now missing. The only option, I only see are "Fill & Sign" and "Comment".  How can I redisplay "Tools" option?

    Hi Mario,
    1. Delete "UserCache.bin" file from C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\Adobe\Acrobat\11.0.
    2. Launch Reader and check.
Is Reader updated to the latest patch v11.0.10?
In case you are still running into issues try repairing Adobe Reader from the 'Help' menu and check.

  • ¿Can be a better resolution in the external display?

I recently buy a new LCD ViewSonic 22" full HD (its declared to support 1920X1080) and Im very happy with my acquisition. Now I can work in a large screen with Page and Final Cut Pro but still I feel it can be a better resolution in the bigger display the same as in the little 13" in my MBP 7.1 Indeed the display resolution it's 1080p in the LCD and 1280X800 in the little screen. I would like to ask if I did the right settings and if not what can I do? If it is possible of course.
    Thanks in advance
    Josef Carel

No worries man .. your concern is known as pixel width or pixels per square inch..
you do the maths by multiplying horizontal inches with vertical inches of your display
that's your display area in square inches ..
    and then you multiply 1920 x 1080 ..
that's your total number of pixels
when you divide the area to the number of pixels you get pixels per inc
and the higher the value the smaller each individual pixel therefore harder for your eye to spot them resulting in smoother display ..
That's why I've advised you the 22 inch display in the first place and I'm sure now you appreciate the advice more

  • Reading email within the borders?

Love my new Droid Maxx  BUtT  my email go OFF the sides  I have to scroll from side to side to read....Is there a setting to keep email in Left and Right borders?
    Thanks
    DaveAlan

If you rotate your phone to the landscape orientation, it will allow you to see more of the email, or you should be able to change the font size in the app settings.  Unfortunately, if you are trying to view a picture, changing the font size won't help, as the picture is the size that it is.

  • ELVIS II units - when the DMM leads are connected together with the unit set to read AC current, the unit displays 3.56 mA? Is this normal?

For the ELVIS II unit with the instrument launcher selected - using the DMM to measure AC current: when the leads are connected together, the display show 3.56 mA. Is this normal? Readings do not become accurate until above 10 mArms.

    Hello,
Yes, this is normal. The AC modes in DMMs become nonlinear with very small input signals near the bottom end of their ranges. The result is a residual error reading. This is not an offset -- as you noted, the accuracy improves as you increase the input signal. While this threshold is not specified for ELVIS II, it should be around 2% of range (10 mArms in the 500 mArms range, as you observed). By comparison, that threshold is specified as 5% of range for myDAQ and 1% of range for the PXI-4072.
    I hope this helps.
