Read mail dissapears!

My girlfriend just got a new macbook. I set her AOL account up in Mail. it sends and receives great, but it deletes her read mail (the stuff she reads but still needs)!! And to make it worse, it pulls it off the aol server, so going to aol.com doesn't help either. She's already lost some important emails from ppl she can't contact any other way... anyone have any ideas? thanks

R C-R,
With all due respect, your first reply did not say
this was an AOL issue & its rhetorical question would
not be helpful unless someone already knew the answer.
But the question was not rhetorical. This could be either an AOL or a Mail issue. I clearly stated that Mail had no bearing on this, so it could only be an AOL issue. If you can manage to interpret what I said as meaning something else, I'd like to know.
Likewise, "do not use AOL" is not an answer,
That depends on what the problem is. If the problem is that you don't want read messages to be deleted from AOL's server, then it certainly is an answer. Actually, it's the only possible answer, as there is nothing you can do to prevent AOL from purging messages from the server.
Now, if the problem is that you don't mind AOL to delete your messages from the server, as long as you can do something to keep them somewhere else, then that's a different problem -- and I did answer that as well.
In other words, what you say is not an answer is only part of what I said, and the problem you say it's not an answer for is only one of the possible interpretations of the problem. I considered all the possible interpretations and addressed all of them.
anymore than 'don't use whatever' would be for anyone else
seeking info on how to use 'whatever' with some Apple app.
Sorry, but this is wrong. If what you want to do with a particular application cannot be done, then "don't use this application to do that" is certainly the answer.
Basically, this does have a lot to do with Mail;
Wrong. This is an AOL thing. It has absolutely nothing to do with Mail.
specifically, that it isn't aware of how AOL's mail service works
Nor should it. Mail is a POP & IMAP mail client, not an AOL client. Expecting it to know anything AOL-specific is barking up the wrong tree. I can't believe I'm having to tell you this again.
users do have to set it up to compensate for that
if they wish to use Mail & AOL email together.
Or course they do. And the same would happen if they used any other standard IMAP client. That's precisely the problem (the AOL problem, not the Mail problem), that AOL doesn't behave as a normal IMAP server would. You cannot blame IMAP clients for not being aware of AOL idiosyncrasies.
Since that is possible, at least to a fair degree of
compatibility, it is puzzling that you end your post with:
There are no settings you can "adjust" in Mail to
"correct the problem".
Tell me which settings can be "adjusted" in Mail to prevent AOL from purging messages from the server.
I know you generally know what you are talking about,
but sometimes I wonder if you realize that what you
post isn't adequate for others to know what you are
talking about too!
The thing is, what I say and the way I say it depends enormously on the attitude of whoever I'm replying to. If, for example, the OP assumes this is a Mail problem, without making any effort to investigate whether that's really the case, nor to understand what's really going on, and he/she is wrong, then I won't answer in the same way that I would if he/she asked what the problem could be without blaming the innocent.
The OP in this thread didn't ask why mail was being deleted from the server. Rather, he blamed Mail right away for something that was AOL's fault, without really knowing what he was talking about. Hence, I answered accordingly, i.e. I just said it was an AOL issue without providing any additional information that could help him understand why that was the case. Had he just asked why messages were being deleted from the server, I would have replied in an entirely different way...

I have an iPhone 4s running iOS 5.0.1 and my received mail dissapears shortly after receiving.

It is a POP account which is also on my iPad and my iMAC.  All my accounts are set to me manually deleting email.  The iMAC deletes off server while the others do not.  This did not happen on my 3gs phone running iOS 5.0.1.  It was set to SMTP and MAIL.  When I set up the accounts on my 4s it automatically set the to mobile.
    example
    old system (3gs)
    mail.example.net
    smtp.example.net
    new system (4s)
    Both mobile.example.net
Thats the only visual difference I see.

  • How can I read email from my aol account from my iphone and keep it as uread on my computer at home.  It automatically goes to read mail on my computer.  On my computer if I want to keep an email to answer later I can mark it "Keep as New".

How can I read my email from my aol account from my iphone and keep it as "unread" on my computer at home?  At home I can read an email and if I want to get back to it at a later date I can mark it as "keep as new".  I tend to forget it if it goes to "read" mail.   Right now, when I read an email from my phone it goes automatically to "read" mail.

On the iPad, using the mail app, there is no way to do what you are asking without tapping the flag icon and marking the item as unread. Have you tried the OWA app for the iPad? It may have that functionality, but I haven't tested it as you need an Office 365 subscription with Exchange support to use the app.

You might want to use IMAP to read mail from hMail Server, if you keep messages on server. It has a lot more features for managing messages on server.
A lot of POP3 implementations (both client and server side) will automatically delete retrieved messages. I don't know exactly what JavaMail does in that regard, nor of hMailServer, but I do know some mailservers out in the wild will ALWAYS delete mails retrieved with POP3.

I don't think that a software update from Apple will solve the issues that you are having. You have a rogue installation. After you posted I have just done the following:
Disk Utility can verify  my partitioned Volume (including my boot disk) AND REPAIR the non-boot disks on the same Volume without a glitch. It repairs the non-boot disks containing data smoothly.
I have used Mail to send some mails from some Yahoo and Hotmail accounts to my Thunderbird client containing GMail accounts - absolutely normal.
I have iLife '09 but my iMovie '09 and iPhoto '09 open in a jiffy and I see no issues here. I have 6GB RAM (Maximum) on an early 2008 Macbook Pro with a 750GB hard drive partitioned with 120GB reserved for the Boot Drive.
I am sorry that I cannot help further but I am sure there must be a way to reinstall the software without having to revert to restoring your ML backup. I have two clones and if you have such I would attempt to do that through that rather than through Time Machine - that is of course if you have a cloned drive.
    Good luck!

  • Missing "Read Mail" Folder

I had trouble with my Mac yesterday and lost all application preferences. I used to have a "Read Mail" file set up within mail where I would move messages I wished to keep. Is there a data file that was storing these messages? If so, how can I restore or reopen this file?
    Power Mac G4, 867 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Does such a power outage or spikes occur very often in your area?
If so, you should consider investing in a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) which I would do with a Desktop regardless.
In addition, nothing is better protection than maintaining a regular backup and preferably a bootable clone backup saved to an external firewire drive.
That being said, when you first launched Mail after the power outage and were prompted to re-enter all account information, were you also prompted to import any mailboxes?
All Mail.app data is stored in the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail. All user created "On My Mac" location mailboxes, locally stored mailboxes for a .Mac or IMAP type account, any imported mailboxes and the Outbox mailbox which is shared by all accounts are located in the Mailboxes folder at Home > Library > Mail > Mailboxes.
Check if this Read Mail mailbox is available. It should be a Read Mail.mbox named folder.

Hi guys, I have this serious problem about writing
and reading mails in other languages, for example,
Japanese. I have tried both Hotmail in Safari and
    also Mail application.
Could you provide more details about your specific problems? For example, can you not compose in Japanese, or is the problem that it does not come out right at the other end? As for reading, what are you seeing? Have you tried setting the encoding to one of the Japanese options in Message > Text Encoding for Mail or View > Text Encoding for Safari? For webmail, have you tried FireFox? Safari will not work with some systems.

  • Some read mail items remain marked as unread

Some read mail items remain marked as unread (even after I've read them).
I have to manually mark them as read.
This doesn't happen to all mail items, just some.
    How can I fix this?

A few discoveries I made this morning.
One is that disabling GPGMail seems to solve the problem, or at least significantly reduce its occurrence.
Another is that with GPGMail enabled, it seems to depend on how quickly one opens an email. I can't say for sure that this is a hard and fast rule, but messages staying unread seems to be more of a problem if you've just entered the folder or just been viewing another message and suddenly change to an unread one. It's as though GPGMail causes Mail to need some time to think things through.
A third is that if you have multiple mail accounts, a workaround to reset the unread count exists. If a mail folder in Account One is having problems, you can switch to a folder in Account Two, possibly wait an interval of time (not sure what that interval would be), then switch back to your original Account One folder. That seems to force a refresh of the unread count, without needing a folder rebuild (with consequent loss of expanded threads, etc).
However, for the time being, I've just disabled GPGMail. I can re-enable it as needed, by the looks of it, and it's not as though I've really needed to use it yet.
I could wish, though, that Apple offered proper GPG support, or at least that they made enough of their API available that third parties could do a proper job instead of an ugly and somewhat broken hack. (I've also seen complaints that Apple like to change their API without telling anyone, just to keep third-party developers on their toes =P.) I suppose another problem is lack of available time. Which I also suffer from, so I don't think a "real solution" is forthcoming from this quarter, at least.

  • Read Mail button on the toolbar doesn't open my default mail program

I've just reinstalled Firefox 17.0.1 (and everything else) following a crash. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium, with Windows Mail (not Live Mail) set as the default email program and I've added a Read Mail button to the Firefox toolbar: all this is exactly as it was before the crash. Windows Mail is selected in Tools/Options/Applications/mailto, and also runs perfectly from its desktop icon.
However, clicking on Read Mail doesn't open Windows Mail as it used to.
I get the message "The application could not be found, please use Toolbar Buttons's options window to correct this". I'm not clear on what it is I'm being directed to do. What and where is the "Toolbar Buttons's options window"?
    Many thanks.

That did it. Thanks very much indeed.
