Read messages still in inbox????

Just bought an imac - very happy EXCEPT - my Mail which I've ported across from AOL.
Unlike very other mail system I've come across all messages STAY in the inbox after reading until I manually drag them to a saved folder or of course delete them.
I've looked in rules to see if I could create something that would move them that way but can't see anythign that would apply.
Anyway, am I missing somethng here? I'm going to stop using mail if it can't do something as BASIC as this!

Normally, if you did nothing special, read messages stay in inbox, The only message is read signal is sent back to the mail server to mark it read on its side side too (unless you said contrary). If you did nothing on your Mac then check your mail app on the web. It might be that the message move to folder is done on server side.

Can't see read messages in my inbox even though filter is not on.

I can only see unread email messages in my inbox even though the quick filter IS NOT set to unread. When I read an unread message it is then unhighlighted, but when I close Thunderbird and go back in, only the unread messages show up and the read message disappears. This is not an issue in any other folder other than the Inbox.

Thanks, it was View->Threads->All. I don't know how this was changed but I'm sure it was a problem between the keyboard and chair.

Update read messages on blackberry inbox

I've had my Blackberry Curve for a few weeks now... My work email is through a Microsoft exchange server. I currently have about 50 unread emails in my outlook inbox.... my Blackberry however shows over 1500 emails....
If I read something on my blackberry, it updates my outlook. However, when I read it on outlook, my blackberry does not return the favor....
How do I get my blackberry to actually know what's going on w/ my email account? Help!

My Iphone 4 is downloading my entire outlook inbox including "read" messages.

My new Iphone is downloading from my outlook account. But it is downloading my entire inbox (even read messages) how do I stop it and just download messages from today forward. I have over 6000 "read" messages in my inbox. Do i have to delete each email individually on my phone? It pulls 50 at a time. Once I delete the 50 it pulls the next 50 and so on...

If the phone is able to download old messages it is because they are still on your server. If you delete them off the server, the phone won't be able to download them anymore.

Unable to clear inbox, still showing 1 message in inbox on icon when there are no messages in the inbox. How can I clear the 1 message from the icon indicator?

Ouit Mail app. (Remove from MultiTasking bar).
Double tap the home button to bring up the multitasking dock. Tap and hold an app. A red badge with a minus symbol will appear on the icons. Tap the minus symbol of Mail app to quit.

There is no messages in my Inbox, but counter near it still show (10), I even check on server there is no messages. Mail work properly, but it is annoying to see counter near Inbox, in doc counter work perfectly.
This problem is appear 2 days ago, and I did not install or change something in preferences.

Select the mailbox and hit the rebuild mailbox from the menu/Mailboxes.
If that doesn't help, Quit Mail and go to your home Library folder. In Lion, to get to it, go to Finder, select "GO" from the menu and hold the option key down. Select Library in the submenu.
Navigate to the Mail folder/ V2/ MailData folder/. Find the Envelope.plist files. Move them to the desktop or trash and open Mail. Hit continue on the popup box and it will rebuild your message index. This could take a while if you have a lot of messages.

Display read messages in Inbox

I just linked my Hotmail account to my iPod Touch through the 'Mail' app. It works, but it only displays unread messages. How do I get all messages in the Inbox to display?

I'd like access to all my messages in my Inbox, whether I have already viewed them or not. Right now, it only shows those I have not read (most email programs indicate this showing the message in bold, whereas messages that are read are not bold but still displayed and accessible). If I were to move every message that I read into a sub folder, I suppose I would be able to find them all, but I'm not that organized nor do I want to take the time for that extra step. I'd rather just see all of my read messages that I haven't deleted.
I'm not sure if it's a POP3 account......how do I determine that? It's a Hotmail account that I've used for years, and linking it to my new iPod Touch was my first experience with an Apple product.
Either this is a majorly inconvenient result of Apple's "simple and elegant" approach, or I'm missing a really simple step! Thanks for your help.

But without the specifications defined by your ISP no one can tell you any more specific details. They should have a web page somewhere (or call them) that supplies all the relevant information:
Incoming (pop) mail server
mail login user name and password
pop port
ssl requirements
authentication type (password?)
Outgoing (smtp) mail server
smtp port
ssl requirements
authentication type (password?)
mail login user name and password

Reading message from inbox

I want to write a J2ME application which will read message from inbox.i used the following code to open fileconnection with inbox

If you want to be able to store data and then retrieve it, the you can use RMS, but if you want to get data already stored on your phone then you need the FileConnection API. There is no work around this as far as I know.

Cannot delete messages from inbox, cannot move messages out of inbox, message do not copy to "sent" or "draft"

The following problems occur:
- cannot delete messages,
- cannot move messages out of inbox,
- messages do not copy "sent"
- messages cannot be saved to "draft"
This applies to imap and to gmail accounts.
The following has not helped:
- compact trash and other folder
- deinstall and reinstall TB 31.4.
- archive profile with mozbackup and replace profile from archive after reinstall of TB.
- deinstall and reinstall TB 31.3 downgraded
- delete all folders and files with "trash*" in the file name (all IMAP)
- delete all files of 1 mail account completely in the TB profile and resync from server (IMAP)
This might coincide with these system changes:
- upgrade to TB 31.4.
- some of these email accounts were installed on ios8 iphone.
Not sure if the problems had already started before these 2 occurrences.
Any help is appreciated to solve this.

What type of mail account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)? If POP, what are your Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings?
You may be able to get rid of those messages in Mail doing Edit > Cut (⌘X) (for best results do it with one message or just a few at a time), but you should remove them from the server first if they’re still there.
Does this account allow web access? If not, you may find the Account Info window useful to solve this problem — choose Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu (gear icon) located below the mailboxes list in the main Mail window.

TS2755 Messages disappear in inbox. When I close out messenger entirely and reopen it, they appear. Also, if I only have one message unread in my inbox and I open up my messenger it automatically opens the unread message. Very frustrating....Please hel

I have an iphone 4s, OS 4.1.1. I am having issues with my messenger. When I have a message open I will see a new text come through and then it disappears. I have to close out of my messenger entirely and reopen it. Once I reopen the message the text reappears. Any suggestions? Also, if I get a new message and there is only one unopened message in my inbox and I open my messenger it automatically opens that message. Any way to fix this so that I decide when I want to open a certain message?

There are several possible reasons that messages seem to 'disappear'.
There are two types of email accounts: IMAP and POP. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/glossary-terms-including-types-accounts
If you have a POP account and are accessing the mail on more than one computer or smartphone, whichever device reads (downloads) the message first will have it locally, but it will no longer be listed or available on the other devices.
If you have an IMAP account, the message stays on the server, but if one device (user) moves or deletes the message, it will affect the view on all devices. So, for example, if you are using your smartphone and take some action on an email, when you get back to your computer, it will reflect that same action (but you might not have realized what caused it).
Sometimes the index of a mail folder (.msf) will get corrupted. If you right click on the name of the folder and select Properties, a 'Folder Properties' window will open. Select 'Repair Folder'. This may take care of the problem.
Another, less likely, reason for messages not to show up in your inbox is having the preference set to show only unread or recent messages. Then once you read them they seem to disappear.
If you are still having problems, please look at the following items and respond with the information.
1) What operating system do you use (Win8, MAC, Linux, etc)?
2) Are you using IMAP or POP?
3) If your mail server has a browser interface (web mail access such as mail.google.com), do the messages show up there?
4) Right click on the folder in question and select Properties.
a) Number of messages?
b) Size on disk?
5) Left click on the account name; View settings for this account; highlight Server settings;
What choices are marked under "When I delete a message"?
6) What, if any, antivirus program do you have installed?

How do i leave a copy of a message in the inbox on the gmail server when I delete it on my iphone?

I am sure this has been worked out, just cant get it myself.
I have a freind who uses gmail and keeps all his history of messages in his inbox. I have explained to him that its prob not the best thing to do, but that is how he has been doing it. He is thining of getting an Iphone and moving from BB. But he wants to know for sure that when a email message comes into his phone and he deletes it, on the server its still will be in his inbox. Apparantly this is a function he currently has and its a make or break issue for him.

So even though he can see everything he's ever gotten in All Mail, he still wants in in Inbox? I realize the how to do it is a little bit of a stumper and it shouldn't be so difficult... but honestly, I think the more relevant question would be Why? Why would anyone in their right mind want to do that?
How does his Blackberry currently access his Gmail account? It should be a simple matter to duplicate the settings. It's undoubtedly just using POP and not deleting the originals as they are downloaded.
Here's what's going to happen if that's the case. The very first time he sets up a new device... phone, pc, doesn't matter, to use POP, it's going to download every e-mail he's ever gotten unless he goes in and tells Gmail otherwise.

Unable to read messages - rookie with iMS 5.2

I suppose this forum is from the iPlanet Messaging server, my excuses in advance if this matter is not properly posted.
I'm trying to install an iPlanet Mesaging Server v5.2, Directory Server 4.16 coming with the suite the customer bought in 2003. The server was okay but after a crash I had to reinstall the server, inherited from another person who left so, I'm a rookie with iMS but not with Solaris and SIMS 4.0.
I have followed all the procedures to install the server. Have created an user within the console administration. The user is recognized thanks to imsimta dirsync -F. I can login via HTTP and send messages outside.
My drama is, after days of research through the docs, that I can't read incoming mail. As a matter of fact the server receives email from outside seen snooping the network connections but nothing shows un into the INBOX, neither HTTP nor POP3 client.
There's not a clear evidence is the iDA (dlegated admin) is compulsory to properly manage users and groups, i did not install it, and did not install the Enterprise Server v.6.0 as well.
It is not clear if the ims_dssetup.pl needs to be run, there's an indication stating that if installing the directory server shipped on the same package as the mail server. I have run it as well but it looks like the DS schema was already up-to-date.
The SENT messages are properly shown so, I guess the store is okay but, why I'm not able to read the messages in the INBOX, they don't even show up by using mboxutil at all ("no new messages in server").
What am I doing wrong? any help would be highly appreciated.

Please do remember, iMS 5.2 is two years old. We do not re-do a package, even two years later.
The download of iMS 5.2 continues to contain Directory 4.16, even though DS 4.16 is End Of Life. We encourage installatin of a current Directory Server rather than the one packaged with the download, and you would have seen that recommendation even as you performed that installation.
The release notes I'm referring to are the original 5.2 release notes. These were repeated from the 5.0 and 5.1 release notes, too.
you can still download the p2 patch from:

this is a patch, not a full release. Install your 5.2 bits, and then apply the patch.
Something else you may need to do. The Admin Guide, Appendix B talks about "direct ldap". We strongly recommend following those directions, even before starting the server. The old method for accessing the Directory data, "dirsync" will not be fixed, and does exhibit problems.
There are only a "readme" and a "buglist" associated with the p2, and that's included with the download itself.

Not receiving new messages in my inbox?

I am no longer receiving messages in my inbox. I have tried taking the accounts offline/online; changing the preference settings and it is still not working.
Any suggestions?

Though I am still unsure as to how it happened to begin with, I was able to resolve this by deleting and creating a new account in mail.

E71 - cannot open/read messages anymore

I was messaging friends earlier, and I tried opening an old message in my Inbox, by scrolling to it and then using the function key in the middle of the d-pad, and it does nothing. I also tried selecting options->open, and still nothing.
Is anyone else having this problem? The only time I CAN view a message now, is when I receive a new message, and on the home screen, a small preview window shows the message and I can go to it directly from there, but after that, I can no longer open any other old messages.

Anybody?
