Read messages/threads show as unread

Recently, a couple times a week I've been getting messages or threads
showing up on my board listing as unread. So far, I've only noticed it
in the private boards I watch, but it could be happening in the others
and I just can't tell because of the number of messages.
An example is in the Alliance board. A thread that was last posted to
on 12 Oct. was showing up as having new messages as of this morning
(thread and board title in bold type) when there are none.
Not a big deal, but just wondering what's going on.

Molly, it's happened again, in a big way.
Right now, the entire LabVIEW and Feedback forums show as unread for me.
I'll not mark them as read for a day or two if it will help figure out what is going on.

    Hey brightness,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you can't install or uninstall QuickTime. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

The message icon shows 1 unread message when there are acvtually none. How do I fix this?

Given that you are very low in memory on your iPhone, it would be much easier to connect your phone to your computer and download iOS 8.1 via iTunes.  Memory won't be an issue this way.

  • Standards for message threading?

    greetings,
i'm curious if someone knows the answer to whether there are standards for how message threading is supposed to be done.
i keep my email mailboxes "organized by tread". this is invaluable to me in keep up with and following the email traffic at work. however, there is a slight problems with organizing by threads, which i consider a problem causes by people sending mail... it is not uncommon for people to reply to a message, then change the subject and make an entirely different message which has nothing to do with the message to which they originally replied. this causes email messages to get hidden under the wrong topic when messages are display by threads...
for the problem messages, i've read thru the message headers and see that the original message has a "message-id" and the later emails have a field "in-reply-to" which include the message id's of the original message. in apple's mail reader, will logically group everything together under 1 message thread in this case, as i would expect. but the difficult seems to be that people sending the messages don't know that they are screwing up things for mail readers that thread the messages...
there are several possible reasons why the wouldn't know. either the senders don't display messages in a threaded format, or their mail reader just uses another mechanism for threading messages (like subject or another message header).. i've check and the mail all seems to be coming from outlook.
my question is whether this there is an internet standard that states what the "in-reply-to" is supposed to be used for by mail readers. it this supposed to be used for "threading" messages? is this undefined and apple is just smart for using that field this way? do the standards state that threading should be done another way?
years ago, i begged for message threading since it always worked so well in newsreaders... i was very happy when message threading showed up in 10.3. i still can't imagine working in email without message threading, even if there are instances where it gets screwed up... so i won't stop using it... i'm just curious to know if there is a standard that defines how it should be done and what that standard is... i don't know where to look up the standard... i didn't find the info by google... if anyone has some pointers i'd appreciate it...
    thanks for any info...

    ok-
i had seen the 2nd link, but wasn't sure about how current it was since it has a date from years ago... i thought it was a good explanation of how it "should" work... but i wasn't sure if this was related to a standard or just a convention (meaning a convenient way that some people do it, but there isn't any agreement of how it should be done)...
i also realize that just because there is a standard, it doesn't mean that anyone has to comply with it... but it is useful to know, particularly since the discussion of standard comes up where i work...
    thanks-

  • How can I set up my mail accounts to sync sent and read messages automatically?

I'm not sure how to set it up so  my flagged emails, sent messages, and read messages will show the same in my MacBook Pro and my MacBook Air.  This seems like it would be a simple problem to fix, but I can't figure it out.
    Thanks!!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
This type of service is offered by IMAP email accounts such as the me address that is associated with your iCloud account.
Are you saying it isn't working or are you trying to add a third party address (ie gmail, yahoo etc etc) to your mail account and expecting it to work like an IMAP account.

  • IPad mail shows 12 unread messages but they are all read

iPad mail shows 12 unread mail on the icon.  However, all mail has been read.  I checked every message available from the server and I deleted and reinstalled the email account.  Any help is appreciated

iPad only show last 50,100,200 emails depending upon settings.  I had this some time ago when the 17 (for example) emails were "dropped" off the list of emails on the iPad.  At the botton of the list of emails there should be a "show more" type option, press this to loand the previous batch of emails to see if the unread emails are in there.
Also watch out for threading emails.  It could be you need to open a thread to see the email.  Also an option you can disable (I did!)

  • Mail w/ Gmail showing "important" messages in inbox as unread even when deleted and read on other devices

This is a werid one but hoping somehere here can help or at the very least someone from Apple is listening.
I'm using several Gmail accounts across all of my macs and iPhone / iPad.  To be specific:
    13" MacBook Air - Mid 2011
    13" MacBook Pro - Mid 2012
    27" iMac - Mid 2012
    iPhone 5s
    iPad Mini
(All Macs are running 10.9 with the latest build of Mac Mail 7 (1822).  All software updates are performed on all machines.  Both iDevices are iOS7 latest versions.)
All of my emails (5 gmail accounts and 2 exchange accounts) but one (a Gmail account) work just fine across all devices.  I have one Gmail account that acts weird, but only on one mac (iMac 27").  Here is the issue:
On this account, all devices EXCEPT the iMac, when I read a message it shows up as read on all other devices.  When I delete a message it deletes from all other devices (but is still accessable from All Mail folder).  However on the iMac, it never shows up as read (still shows the blue dot next to it and still shows a number next to the mailbox name).  If I delete a message on another device, someimtes on the iMac is remains in the inbox, sometimes it deletes.
Some further info that might help / things I have tried:
I tried Removing the acocunt and re-adding it to Mail.
I have tried reindexing all mail per Apple's method.  This works, but as new mail comes in, and gets read on other devices, the problem returns.
I have tried to "rebuild mailbox" about 20 times.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not.  The problem always returns as above, after reading / deleting mail on other devices.
Sometimes just rebooting Mail seems to catch some of the items deleted on other devices, but not mail that is read on other devices
I also noticed that many of these mail itmes were labeled as "important" in GMail so I went in and switched Gmail out of the "important" mode and back to the classic.  Then I reindexed and rebuilt again just to be sure.  Now the mail is no longer labled Important, but the read counts are not correct and I'm still showing read mail as unread on this one device.
I have also deeply compared mail on my iMac and my MBA.  All settings in preferences are the same.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?  It's making it very hard to use my iMac for work and it's my primary machine.  I'm cringing at the alternatives (outlook is simply not an option for me)

Read the blog post Mail in Mavericks Changes the Gmail Equation and see if there suggestions work for you.

  • Mail showing one unread message when all messages are marked as read

Wondering if anyone else was having any weird issues with their iCloud and unread count in the Mail app on their mac running lion? I can't seem to get rid of a phantom unread message. My iCloud account is fairly new so I don't have that many messages to go through so I know there is not an unread message any where. Any help would be appreciated
    Cheers,
    Rabah

I have had the same issue with my Microsoft exchange email after upgrading to Lion.  It's a bit annoying.  My iPad, Android Phone, and viewing it using a browser all show 0 unread, but Mail shows 3 unread.  I have tried deleting the account, rebuilding, and pawing through settings looking for something I missed. Nothing.  I actually had the same problem with my MobileMe email with Snow Leopard but I eventually permanently removed the account as other problems arose and just used it in my browser.
    Sorry I couldn't help but I hope it's resolved.

  • Why do read messages on my iPhone still show as unread on my ipad?

EVen after synching with iTunes messages will appear as read on one device and unread on the other. I thought iCloud took care of that?

The iCloud accounts are IMAP (or IMAP-like).  If that is the account you are refering to, then you should not have the problem you report.  Maybe it's a timing issue, you may need to give it some time for the iPad to catch up.  (In fact, I'm not sure changing the "read" status syncs immediately or even automatically.)

  • IOS7 showing 265 unread email messages which don't exist

Both my wife's as well as myselfs phones are showing about 265 emails on the homescreen mail count yet there are no meesages actually on the phone inbox.
    Is there a fix?

Something different related to this is broken in iOS7 (on my mini at least) and it is maddening.  I have used 'organize by thread' since it became available because I find it useful.  But now (compared to 6.1.3), instead ot the most recent thread message appearing in the inbox view with the name of the sender, it is flagged with the names of everyone who has so far contributed messages to the thread.  So you cannot tell who the message is from, until you descend into the thread or read the mail!  In portait orientation the inbox view covers the sender's name so you can't even flick your gaze over to check, without swiping the inbox away.  It presumes that I consider all messages on a thread to be of equal importance and will descend into the thread to read the mail no matter who sent it, which I don't and won't. This new mode that should be disable-able in 'settings'.  The message thread count also seems to have disappeared, though TBH I can't remember if the mini had that before.  My 4S certainly does.
I can live (just about) with iOS7's 2D cartoon look, thin lines and text (too faint on a mini, had to select 'bold' in accessibility), square edges, meaningless hieroglyphics, UI changes and got-to-move-backwards-to-move-forwards neo-simplificationist visual dogma.  I hope the reduced processor drain from the simpler rendering routines gives me more battery life.  But when someone reaches deep into the way I work and breaks something like the thread title stuff, it makes me feel a (brief) flash of empathy with the anti-Apple crowd.  Won't be updating my 4S any time soon.

  • Mail icon shows (1) unread msg, but all msgs are read

Yesterday, my mail icon showed one unread message. When I clicked on the app, there were no new messages, but now the (1) won't go away. How do I get the (1) to go away?
    null

I also have the badge showing unread emails at a higher number than emails in my inbox. I think it may be because i deleted a number of emails from iPhone in box without opening them because i had already read them on my Mac. How can i reset. Home/sleep buttons don't do the job. Other remedies?

  • TS3899 Yahoo email account showing "phantom" unread messages

I set up a "new to me" iphone 4 today and added a yahoo email account.  I cleaned the inbox, trash, and spam folders out before setting up account on phone.  Mail icon is showing 39 unread messages in that account and they are not showing in the inbox on the phone for me to clear out.

Mail -> Edit in upper right hand corner -> Mark All as read in lower left hand corner. This will clear the unread email number for the mail app.
