It seems after reading the above, you have a drive that doesn't support DVD+ media, but does support DVD- media.
There is a distinct difference. And Dual Layer media didn't come to be supported until much later.
CD-RW means only able to read CDs, and write to CD-R and CD-RW media.
DVD-ROM drives exist which will only read DVD-R, DVD-ROM, CD-R preburnt, and CD-ROMs. They can't burn any CD meda.
DVD-ROM/CD-RW drives are known as combo drives and do everything a CD-RW drive can do and read DVD-R burnt DVDs as well as DVD-ROMs.
Superdrive indicates the variety of DVD drives which can write to the variety of DVD formats well as CD formats. Depending on the age of the Superdrive it may support DVD-R (almost all support at least this), DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+R DL, DVD+RW, and a few support DVD-R DL.
Your 550 Mhz G4 can handle burning data DVDs with a different burner, but I wouldn't try to run iDVD, or any other DVD movie burning software because the 733 Mhz G4 is the minimum you need to burn iDVD videos of 2 hours in length in a 4 hour burn. Faster processors will make that burn shorter as well as faster drives.

  • Can iMac burn DVDs playable on other DVD players?

I have a NON-Copyrighted DVD that I need to duplicate. This is a basic DVD, created by my son's school PTA for a school presentation, that will play on any DVD player. I have followed the online steps to create an image using Disk Utility (with DVD/CD Master), then burn the image onto a blank DVD. This newly burned DVD will play only on the iMac - it will not play on any other DVD player. Is the iMac capable of duplicating DVD that will play on any DVD player?

Thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions. I'm really just shaking my head here. I bought this Mac hoping things like this would be easier than on my old PC, but I hate to say I am really regretting ever getting this thing.
Hey, no problem... a pleasure, as always.
With regards to any regrets you may have in getting a Mac, I, nor anyone else here, can help you with that decision.
Your symptoms are genuine and are regrettable. I could repeat what I stated in my last post; that DVDs burned using DU work for me whether played on my Mac or on a DVD player for viewing on the telly. That would not help you though as your experience is different.
What I will suggest is that you do what is right for you and your needs. If that means selling your Mac and going back to a PC, so be it.
I am curious though. When, before you got a Mac and you used a PC to burn DVDs, did you use MS Windows in-built burning software (is there such a thing?) or did you use a third party utility like Nero. If you used something like Nero, then that's no different to investing in Roxio Toast for the Mac.
Regardless, I genuinely do regret that your experience with your new Mac isn't up to the standards that you expected. I could suggest many advantages for using a Mac (as, indeed, many others here can) but the decision is yours. You do have a great computer there so it's up to you.

  • I'm Having Problems Playing a Burnt DVD on my other DVD Player

Ok, si I have DVD studio Pro 4. I have burnt a DVD of a video obviosuly. it plays perfectly fine on my Mac, but it will not play on any of my DVD players. I'm not sure where or not it has to do with Closing the disc, and I'm not sure how to that either.
I'm kind of new to this whole Mac thing. I'm also not sure whether or not my DVD players will play a DVd I burn with DVD Studios Pro.
So if anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated.

    Hi:
    Wellcome to the forum!
You must post some details of your worflow to let us know what could be wrong, i.e.:
    - Footage format
    - Encoding workflow
    - Burning workflow
By a chance, did you created a HD DVD? DVD players for sure will not play that format.
Come back with some info and you'll get help here for sure!

  • Won't read DVD movies but will read CDs and Data DVDs

Subject says it all. The iBook will read CDs and data DVDs just fine. When a movie DVD is inserted the DVD player will start up just fine but when the play button is pressed a message comes up saying the the disc is not supported. If it's a software problem where can i find the drivers to fix it.

Could it be the Region Codes for playing DVDs have all been used
in that machine, and so the remaining code(s) do not match the
discs you have been trying to play within it?
Or does this problem also occur when attempting to play non-region
non-commercial DVD movie discs in the computer?
If the DVD Player has run out of region codes, there is a way to
hack or change the defaults; but the one I've read about does
require the DVD player firmware to be changed for it to work.
The one I've read about (but have not tried) is named Region X.
There are limitations and details, so even after messing around
it may not work; if that is the problem in the first place.
One of these only works if you play a DVD from a "region-free"
DVD drive; so this may be an external drive, not inside the Mac.
So, if the hardware has a defect, that's one thing. If the drive
has seen too many region player changes, that's another. If
the lens is semi-dirty, it may not read or record some media.
All of these kinds of things have been noted by people online.
Sometimes a search may yield some fringe findings by folks
who've unusual issues with their equipment, if not mainstream.
Perhaps some software such as Region X for Mac may help,
if not, there may be other options if the player isn't defective.

  • Mac not reading Disc full of .VOB and other DVD files

Hi all! I wasn't sure where to put this so here I am.
I'm currently transferring old VHS cassettes to DVD-R using the Sony RDR VX530. The disc plays in the Sony. I finalize it and take all appropriate steps. When I insert the DVD-R into my MacBook, it says "Burnable Disc" and shows no files. None at all. I took the disc to my sister's house and put the disc in her Windows laptop and ::BAM:: all the files were there and playable on the windows machine. What gives? I can put other dvds in the drive and see the Video_TS and Audio_TS files, but not the ones I record on this machine. The machine only has two recording options, VR and Video, both of which have to be finalized. Is there a solution besides me having to go borrow a windows laptop to connect to the network so I can pull the .vob files onto my mac?

It sounds to me like you didn't finalize your DVD!
Most DVD recorders and DVD cameras don't finalize the DVD until you specifically tell them to. This finishes writing things like file system information on to the disk but it also makes it so that more data cannot be written to the disk in the future. (This is why it doesn't do it until you tell it to).
Some Windows computers have software that allows them to read disks that haven't been finalized yet. I actually think its a feature of Vista and 7 but I'm not sure about that. Either way, look in your DVD recorder's manual about finalizing the disk to get it to work on your Mac.

  • HT1338 why wont my mac mini read snow leopard disc, it will read other dvd's and cd's

I have a mac mini since 2009 I recently got the snow leopard from apple but when I insert it it in the drive it just makes a few noises then ejects the disc. I have tried other dvd's and cd's and it reads them ok any help appreciated

It's possible the DVD is damaged, scratched and/or dirty.  Check out KB Articles:  http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50448  How to Handle and Clean CD and DVD Discs and Troubleshooting Mac OS X installation from CD or DVD
Or you can request another DVD from Apple and/or get your $$$ back.
Your drive may need cleaning.  Cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs.

  • Blue ray dvd no longer reads movies only cd's

I have a friend with a HP Pavilion 87-126 4nr Notebook that was factory installed with Win 7 pro, unfortunatly he upgraded it to Win 8, which he did not like so then he had them put Win 7 back on it. Doing so erased all the HP restore functions and the Win 7 lost most of his drivers during the reinstallation.
I replaced all the drivers, except Windows installed a default 2006 driver for the BDVD drive and it now acts as a cd-rom only. It reads cds and roms but not dvd or Blue ray anymore. I reinstalled the HP Media software and it still won't recognize movies that it played just before the os change. When a dvd or Blue ray is put in the drive and we try to play a movie, it opens the drive bay and asks to 'insert a disc'.
THis is really annoying, I cannot find a driver for the BDVD on the HP site, I installed and ran the HP system scan, and went through the driver list. I installed the power dvd 10 to no effect.
Any regular cd plays fine, and the dvd / blue ray worked just fine prior to this, how can I get or reinstall the proper driver or software to fix this?

    Hi Romanticapped,
I found some more information but need you to verify the product model as the one provided does not bring up any HP notebooks. However i was able to find dv7-1264nr.   Can yhou verify if this is the model number your friend has?
You can aslo check HP Support to see if a softpaq is avilable for the DVD software that shipped with the system.  I do not have the correct model of the unit otherwise i could send you the direct link to the softpaq you need.  To get to that go to http://www.hp.com, enter the model number, then under the drivers section, look in the software section.
    Thank you,

I have used still photos to make a Quick Time movie using FCE.  The DVD made using i-DVD looks somewhat grainy and the motion isn’t smooth when played on my TV.  Other DVD’s I have made play much better and I am wondering if the problem is my Quick Time movie settings.  The Dimensions and size of the problem movie are 1920X1080 and 584 MB respectively, while the movies that play better  have Dimensions of 853X480 and are about 1.3 GB in size.  Is this the source of my problem and how do I change things for the better.

Are you exporting to QuickTime Movie, or to QuickTime Conversion?   For iDVD, you need to export to QuickTime Movie.   Exporting to QT Conversion will kill the quality if you are moving the video from FCE to iDVD.
The file size per se makes no difference.
What size (pixel dimensions) are the photos that you put into your 1920x1080 sequence?  Also, exactly what are the sequence properties ... is it 1920x1080i60 ... or i50?  In North America it should be i60.
853X480 is an odd frame size.  Where are you seeing this number?  It would appear to be DV-NTSC, which has a frame size of 720x480.  Your 1920x1080 frame size would not be DV-NTSC, it would be Apple Intermediate Codec.   DV and AIC will look different, for sure.
Also, your quality setting in iDVD can affect the final video.  You may want to check that also (in iDVD Preferences > Projects).  Set it to Professional Quality if at all possible.

No need to worry about the disk version. You would just have to install an update anyway as soon as it was installed. Download from the link provided below and use the serial number you have to activate.

  • MBP 15" Penryn - 2.5 Most commercial DVDs not read and ejected

    Hi,
The one week old thing seems to refuse most DVDs. Sometimes, a previously rejected DVD will be read but not always. Please excuse me but I did not attempt to test all the functionality of the drive. I tried to repair permissions to no avail. Details of the culprit below. Any idea?

well, the ejecting happens when the region code of the dvd is not correct. Try inserting your own DVDs or blanks and see if it still ejects.
