Read-only access when saving metadata to file from Adobe Lightroom on a MAC OS to Windows shared drive

We have a group of 5 people editing and indexing photos to a shared drive on a windows server, everyone has its own catalog and working on different folders to avoid any locking conflicts.
The windows computers don't have any problems but the Mac's don't write the updated metadata to all files because they get the message "Photos have read-only access".
The environment is the following:
2x Macs workstations running:
- Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7.1
- iMAC with MAC OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
3x Windows Workstations:
- Windows 7
- Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7.1
Server:
- Shared drive on a Windows Server 2012 Standard
I have searched the internet, no one has this problem with this exact setup but I have tried all the solutions I found, namely:
1. Connect to the network drive with cifs:// protocol
2. Change the settings of the nsmb.conf for 'smb1_only' protocol
3. Mount the drive manually by command line
Nothing worked, any ideas?

Did you ever find a solution to this problem?  I have the same issue and wonder if Lightroom 6 will resolve it.  I  tried AFP, SMB2, SMB3 and they all failed to save metadata randomly. When I use NFS from OS X then it works fine but it's a little slower than SMB and it's not as native as the mount via AFP or SMB, so it's harder to maintain.     My server is a FreeNAS 9.2 (FreeBSD) which is running Samba, Netatalk and native NFS.

  • Extracting JPEG files from Adobe Lightroom previews

    I need to figure out how to extract previews from Adobe Lightroom as JPEG files.  I am trying to develop an external app that will read Lightroom's plugins - I need to do it in either C++, C# or Java.  So far all examples I found were in Lua.  Any help/code examples would be greatly appreciated.

    I think he is looking for C/Java code, not a script/plugin.
    In any case, anybody looking to recover previews should be aware that most plugins or external apps DO NOT assign a proper ICC profile to the extracted previews. The extracted previews are *usually*, meaning NOT ALWAYS AdobeRGB, but untagged: will be interpreted as sRGB. Yeah, that's why they will look different than the original.
    I don't know about JF's plugin.
    (Adobe's recovery script does NOT handle ICC profiles correctly).
    PreviewExporter is the only plugin I know of that handles ICC profiles properly - if anybody knows how JF's plugin handles ICC profiles - do tell.
    Note: PreviewExporter includes source code - it should be straight-forward to translate to C/Java.

  • "Read-only" message when saving edited PDF

    When I try and save editing in an existing PDF I get a pop-up window saying it could not be saved becase it may be read-only. This is true even on files that I have saved myself that are not read-only. How can I get rid of this?? The only option I have is to save the file under a different name which leaves me with the same file.

    Hi ILM100213,
    What version of Acrobat are you using (and have you installed the latest updated)? And what operating system? Have you double-checked the file permissions on those files to make sure that you have read-write access? And, do you know whether any of those files have document permissions assigned in Acrobat?
    I look forward to hearing back from you.
    Best,
    Sara

  • ERROR WHEN SAVING METADATA TO FILE

    how do I fix this

    tiffs are supported, but you probably have some incompatible metadata in your tiffs (assuming tiffs are not otherwise corrupt). Consider logging bug report and sending example of offending tiff to Adobe.
    Were all those tiffs updated using a common application (other than Lightroom)?
    Consider using exiftool to read/write metadata and see how that works. Assuming it is what I think it is (and not an unsupported camera problem or other legit incompatibility), you may even be able to fix the problem using exiftool, but definitely save problem files to support bug report to Adobe.

  • Errors when writing metadata to files on Windows Server

    Good day!
    I have an iMac running OSX 10.9 (Maverick) and Lightroom 5.2.
    My catalog is on the local iMac drive, and the images are on SMB shared drive (handled by Windows 2012 server).
    I decided to do the final layout of my album using InDesign, and for that I needed to access to images using Bridge. So selected all the images (the rated once...) and issue a Metadata/Save command.
    The system came back with errors on many of the files (such as Photos are read only, and unknown errors).
    Retrying to save the metadata on image that was flagged with an error usually (but not always) worked.
    I tried to select save the metadata for few (6) images in a time, many times it was ok, but sometimes, one or two of them failed (and retrying again usually solved the problem).
    It looks to me like a timing related issue.
    Any ideas?
    (After spending about an hour on this, I have exported the images to my local drive...). In general I don't have similar problems with other apps.
    Any ideas?
    Yuval

    I Yuval
    I'm experiencing more or less the same behavior (see Read-only error when writing metadata to file over network (Synology DS1315+ using AFP) ). For me however, the problem is more pronounced if I use the AFP protocol and is better (I think as you described) if I use SMB (all done on a Synology DS1315+). With SMB it most often works but in very rare cases I also get the "read only" message!
    Do you have solution to this? Or are you stuck as I am?
    Cheers, Chris

  • I got the message, "Photos have read-only access."

    I got the message, "Photos have read-only access," when trying to save the metadata into a DNG file. I'm on windows 7, and just upgraded to Lightroom 5. The files in Windows have full write and read ability. What am I doing wrong? Or what box do I need to check or uncheck to be able to save my metadata into the DNG files. My catalogue is on an internal drive. The actual images are on an external drive.

    Okay, got it. I'm a bit confused why I had to this, but I did and it worked.Here is the solution.
    1. Go to my computer.
    2. Right click on the hard drive and select properties
    3. In the properties window, select the security tab
    4. Then click the edit button
    This is where it is weird. I'm logged in as an adminstrator, and the administrator account has allows all permissions (except special permission). You would think that since I'm working as in administrator mode, I could write into files. I can't.
    So, I checked the user account (same name as my admin account). Here the follwong boxes were not checked.
    1. Full control
    2. Modify
    3. Write
    I made sure all three of those were checked and now I can write metadata into the DNG files.

  • Avoid read-only access at physical standby

    Hi!
    DB=11.2.0.2
    when I start the standby with
    SQL> startup
    the db is open read-only.
    Is there a way to configure the db so that startup command only mounts the db and start redo apply?
    this is the config:
    DGMGRL> show configuration verbose;
    Configuration - w
    Protection Mode: MaxPerformance
    Databases:
    w_01 - Primary database
    w_02 - (*) Physical standby database
    (*) Fast-Start Failover target
    Properties:
    FastStartFailoverThreshold = '30'
    OperationTimeout = '30'
    FastStartFailoverLagLimit = '30'
    CommunicationTimeout = '180'
    FastStartFailoverAutoReinstate = 'TRUE'
    FastStartFailoverPmyShutdown = 'TRUE'
    BystandersFollowRoleChange = 'ALL'
    Fast-Start Failover: ENABLED

    If Data Guard is setup correctly the application is not losing data, you cannot read from it, but it will apply logs:
    Ex.
    /home/oracle:STANDBY >sqlplus "/ as sysdba"
    SQL> select * from BIGSHOW.CUSTOMER;
    select * from BIGSHOW.CUSTOMER
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01219: database not open: queries allowed on fixed tables/views only
    So even as the SYS user I cannot read from my test user's tables.
    ORA-01219 is expected when the standby is in this state.
    You can open READ ONLY if you have Active Data Guard, but generally that will cost you extra.
    OR, you can do thing to check your data:
    To open a standby database for read-only access when it is currently performing managed recovery:
    Cancel log apply services:
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE CANCEL;
    Open the database for read-only access:
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE OPEN READ ONLY;
    At some point you have start the recovery again, you probably don't have an issue.
    If you want more peace of mind on this you have to setup a test Data Guard system and bang on it.

    Generally when creating a Word file from either a Mac or Win7 pc and opening it on two different machines (either one first) it always prompts that the file is open and will be opened as read only.
    However opening a CSS file does not prompt that it is already open on or from any machine which is causing code edits to be lost.
    What we found from out testing:
    - The file can be saved from one user to the server and WILL NOT PROMPT on other machines until the saving machine has the Dreamweaver program closed completely
    - The file can be closed and  Dreamweaver minimised to the launch bar but it still will not register on other machines that it has been changed.
    - Also, until the  Dreamweaver program is closed on the machines, it will continue to open it's saved version of the file.
    Example Scenario:
    - User 1 opens test.css (which is 2000 lines) and adds some code to the end of the file to bring it up to 2500 lines
    - Meanwhile User 2 opens test.css as well (opens as 2000 lines as User 1’s edits have not yet been saved) and adds in code to bring it to 2300 lines
    - User 1 saves his file and closes it - but  Dreamweaver is still open.
    - User 2 also saves his file and leaves  Dreamweaver  open.
    - The server will report the size and last edit of the file the same as User 2 as he was the last person to save it (and if you open from the Win7 Machine it will show as User 2’s 2300 line version)
    - If User 1 then open's the file again (from either the 'recent' in Dreamweaver OR clicking on the file directly in Finder...which version opens.... The version that User 1 saved! Not the true version on the server, but the version that User 1 edited and saved with 2500 lines in it.
    - Same for User 2, he will open 'his' version with 2300 lines in.
    Other information:
    - Files are opened directly from the server
    - Sometimes the users will save incrementally and re-open
    - Most of the time users will save incrementally and keep the files open
    - The users will never not save incrementally and just save when closing the file once finished
    - The users are usually working on the files all day
    - It is always the bottom lines of code that are lost. It could be a case of the two versions being mixed up and cutting off the newly added lines based on the line count (possibly).
    It is as if Dreamweaver is holding a cache of the version locally and then only properly looking back to the server when it has been completely closed. It is very difficult to see how the server is causing such an impact on these files, there are very few logs which are giving any indication to the root cause of the problems.
    Anyone know if this is a known issue?
    Is there a way that there can be a featured implemented on the server that doesn't allow another user to open a file if it is already open on another machine?
    Thanks

    Your server file handling has nothing, and really nothing to do with Adobe software. If files don't get locked for (over-)writing and/or lose connection to the program opening them, then your server is misconfigured. It's as plain and simple and that. Anything from "known file types"/ file associations not being set correctly, MIME types being botched, crooked user privileges and file permissions, missing Mac server extensions, delayed file writing on the server, generic network timeout issues and what have you. Either way, you have written a longwinded post with no real value since you haven't bothered to provide any proper technical info, most notably about the alleged server. Either way, the only way you can "fix" it is by straightening out your server and network configuration, not some magic switch in Adobe's software.

  • When saving my illustrator file to a pdf it doesnt show all the artwork ie boxes are hidden in the pdf or only showing part of them. How can I fix this?

    when saving my illustrator file to a pdf it doesnt show all the artwork ie boxes are hidden in the pdf or only showing part of them. Even some text is hidden. I have flattened the artwork so everything is in one layer. How can I fix this?

    Hi John
    I have indicated on the attached jpeg where the problem is, basically a line of text is missing at the top and part of the feeding diagram is missing. I created the artwork in different layer and then flattened. All text has been converted to outlines, however the areas being affected have no transparency, I have used solid fills or no fills. I get the same result when I export the file as a jpeg. Hope you can help.

  • Photo "...changed in external application" when saving metadata in LR2

    I am getting occasional error dialogs saying that one or more photos have been changed in an external application when saving metadata. I'm quite certain the photos have not been touched since the catalog was built--two days ago.
    I built an entirely new catalog after installing LR2. I changed some keywords as I not all images were keyworded in the same way. When I save metadata, either for an entire folder or for all files, I get occasional error dialogs about the image being changed externally. I'm quite certain that I changed nothing.
    Running Win XP Pro SP2 + all updates except SP3, LR2, on Xeon 3070 with 3GGB RAM and lots of hard drive space.

    If I didn't think my humor and irony would be misinterpreted as being rude, I might say "Why are you such a troublemaker, by asking this question? Don't you know from reading the forum, that there are multiple opinions about how LR works with changes done outside itself?" Ooops, I actually said it.<G>
    But, seriously, I've had many of the same questions, so I've been following the various threads, and still haven't got a clear and relatively simple answer to "how to work with LR images and catalogs using outside applications, and not mess stuff up?"
    So, again, seriously, thanks for asking. Hoping, like you, to get clearer understanding.

Upon a quick search, I believe the correct way to stop this from happening is for me to uncheck the auto write to XMP which I did. After correcting the myriad of inadvertent date changes, I selected all the photos I was working with and attempted to save the metadata only to get this warning/question: "One or more of these photos has been changed in an external application. Should Lightroom overwrite the settings on disk?" I searched this and I'm confused because I'm not editing the photos in an external application; the only external app that is even remotely touching these photos is Dropbox, which is where my LR catalog is stored. Does Dropbox have something to do with this message or am I missing something? To overwrite or not to overwrite is the question now, I guess, but I'd like to figure out why this question is being posed so I can fix it from the start.

  • Is it possible when saving the psd file to have an automatic jpg file saved at the same time?

    My work involves preparing images for printing lightboxes and window installations.  My clients require to pre-approve the photos before printing.
    I usually save my files as psd but since the files are very large in this format I usually save another copy as a jpg file that has a much smaller file size.  This makes it possible for me to add these to a presentation and and send them to my client.
    Is it possible when saving the psd file to have an automatic jpg file saved at the same time?  Or do I still have to do this manually?

    If you save the document manually as a PSD file in Phtoshop not from within an Action, Script, Plugin or Droplette.  You may be able to write a Photoshop that would do as save as Jpeg,  And you should be able trigger its execution by setting up a Script Save event using the Script event manager.  When You do a manual save  the script should be triggered.  I wrote may be able to for I have never tried to write that script or set up a Script Manager Save event.  I have only use open events.

    It sounds like the folder you are saving to does not have the proper permission for you to write to it. What OS are you using?

    I've read this post, http://forums.adobe.com/message/5516195#5516195, but am having the same issues on a Macintosh (LR 5, 10.8.4) with random images.
    The folders all have read/write access and the images contained have the same.  I'm logged in as admin, and have full permission.
    The images reside on an external HDD connected to an Airport Extreme BaseStation, on a Macintosh formated (Journaled) HDD
    -Y = Metadata is written successfully

    Folder02
    -Image01a-N
    -Image02a-Y
    -Image03a-Y
    -Image04a-N
    If I modify the images in Preview, and save, and then go back to LR and save the LR changes "stick".
    I've even gone to the parent folder (Folder01, Folder02) and set permsisions to 777 (using PathFinder 6), and applied to all enclosed items, and it still won't change them.  I'm looking at the same images in Finder and the permissions are read/write for all users and the images are not "locked".
