Read-only CIFS share--5320 NAS Gateway Cluster

Is it possible to share CIFS shares read-only using Active Directory authentication, then revert to normal read-write operation? We would like to make information available while we are finishing an incremental copy from an old data source.

I have the same problem so I think I will try to explain it from my point of view and see if we get any comments.
I have a Real Strorage 7110 (Try & Buy)
What my windows guys would like and what they do already on Windows Systems:
Real Disk Layout = G:\shome\username
share "shome" => G:\shome (Default ACL)
User (Owner) = Full Access=rwx+inheritance
Other = x+inheritance
Domain Admin = Full Access=rwx+inheritanceshare "username" => G:\shome\username (Default ACL)
Inherit from above (shome)
Group Staff = rx+inheritanceBy the looks the Sun way is to setup up every share with all the relevant ACL, since you can not setup ACL on the directory above (project). Am I correct
Real Disk layout /export/shome/username
share "username"
User (Owner) = Full Access=rwx+inheritance
Other = x+inheritance
Domain Admin = Full Access=rwx+inheritance
Group Staff = rx+inheritanceThanks

  • Files and folders moved to NAS become read only.

I just got an Iomega NAS. When I move files and folders to it from my Macbook, they become read only when they get there. Files from my girlfriend's PC stay read/write when they are moved to the NAS.
I first noticed this with iTunes. I changed the location of my iTunes folder to be on the NAS and I let iTunes copy the music itself. Now, I can add music by new artists, but if I try to add an artist that I already have a folder for, it won't let me because the folder is read only. Also, I can't change any of the info for any files in iTunes.
I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but it looks like all of the files and folders on my Mac are set up so that only I can see them. When I click "get info" on any file on the computer, it shows:
    me : read/write
    staff: read only
    everyone: read only

When I open a finder window, I see two icons for the NAS in the "shared" section. The first one is:
    hmnhd-ti2mkg
When I click "get info" it shows "Kind: PC Server" and there is no mention of permissions in the "get info" box.
    The second one is:
    hmnhd-TI2MKG.local
When I click "get info" it shows "Kind: Server" and there is no mention of permissions in the "get info" box.
Clicking on either one of these icons lets me browse through the exact same shares and folders. There is no difference between going in to one or the other. They both have the same permissions on all folders, as well.
"Jacob's iTunes Music" is a share on the NAS. All of my read only files (that I want to change to read/write) are already in this share.
Clicking "get info" on any of the shares shows them as "Kind: Sharepoint" with no mention of permissions.
I think I'm going to try to have iTunes copy all the files to my computer, change the permissions, then have it copy them back to the NAS. Is there a way to change permissions of folders, subfolders, and files without having to click "get info" on each and every one?

  • Folders on NAS read-only. Can't change

I have a buffalo linkstation pro duo NAS. It is formatted in XFS.
It seems that randomly some folders have been changed to read-only, when they were previously read-write. I have one folder that is stuck in a read-only state. The folder contains some files from my XP machine. I wrote these files from the mac to the nas.
I am trying to delete the folder and cannot. I shutdown the mac, and accessed the NAS though my Windows laptop, and it wont let me take ownership. Any ideas on how to fix?

I had the same issue and figured out a solution.
    1. Create a folder in your user profile on the mac to mount a network share to. (Example: /chris/mount)
    2. Mount the network share to that folder you just created using this command in Terminal: mount -t smbfs//guest@<BUFFALONAS>/<SHAREDFOLDER> mount (replace <BUFFALONAS> with the IP address or hostname of your buffalo and replace <SHAREDFOLDER> with the smb share on the buffalo)
    3. In Terminal, change into the now locally mounted network share. (Example: cd /chris/mount)
    4. Run the following command in Terminal: chmod -R 777 ./
**Note: You will get an access denied error on any file that was created by a PC but all the files with "broken" permissions created by a Mac will be fixed.**
Hope this helps someone out there. I searched for a solution for months before figuring this out.

  • [SOLVED]Setting up Arch to read CIFS shares but no smb.conf

I am trying to ACCESS CIFS shares from another computer. Other clients can access these shares without issue. I am NOT trying to host files from Arch.
Reading I have done: wiki pages on SAMBA and SMBCLIENT.
Reading the SMBCLIENT wiki page, it apparently states that only the package smbclient should be installed, which I did.
But, following the SMBCLIENT wiki, it shows to issue:
    #smbclient -L
    #smbclient
both error saying smb.conf can not be read. BTW, is the -L to just list the shares available from any place?
    Questions:
    1. So, should smb.conf be created to use smbclient? This package evidently does not install smb.conf in any form.
    2. Does the SAMBA package need to be installed to use smbclient? Samba does install a smb.conf.something.
Any tips you have so I can read CIFS shares will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    steve.

Reporting my results at resolving my issues
    1. installing smbclient provides the described ftp-like environment while accessing CIFS shares. It works fine. I used
    $smbclient //OMV/steve -Usteve%omv
to access my share on the OMV server. I could list, get and put files. I still get the message about no smb.conf file but it works.
    2. Installing gvfs-smb package allowed Thunar to display the shares. In my case, I do a Ctrl-L and then smb://OMV/steve and I can display the shared content perfectly! Click to remember password or it apparently does not work.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • SMB share read-only after upgrade to 10.6.4

since i upgraded my MBP to 10.6.4 i can access our samba shares only in read-only mode.
i'm connecting with the following string:
    cifs://myUsername@servername/aFolder/anotherFolder/myFolder
this connection used to work since 10.3 or 10.4 up to 10.6.3, but now i'm getting a read-only volume ("You can only read" in the finder's get info window).
any hints what i could change to make things writeable again?

    maybe an important additional info:
the SMB share is mounted under /Volumes using my local MBP user/group setting.
on the unix box where this share is located, i'm using a different username ("myUsername"), hence the cifs://myUsername@... in the server address string.
since this connection always worked until 10.6.3 i have no idea if this share used to be mounted for root/admin (or other) - i never checked those permissions/owner settings before.
    THIS IS /Volumes:
    drwxrwxrwt@ 5 root admin 170 14 Jul 12:55 .
    drwxrwxr-t@ 38 root admin 1360 23 Jun 08:38 ..
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 1 11 Jul 10:53 Macintosh HD -> /
    drwxrwxr-x@ 24 root admin 884 18 Jun 19:39 Users
    *dr-xr-xr-x 4 mbpuser mbpuser 16384 14 Jul 12:52 myFolder*
loging in on the remote server (using Terminal.app and "myUsername" + password) i have full r/w access on myFolder and all subdirectories. it's only the mounted share on the MBP that is read-only.

  • How can I make Keynote files read-only (eg: to share with students)?

I would like to share some keynote files with students, and I would like to set them up as read-only, so that the students can tap the screen, read my presentation, but not alter it.  I've tried to set the files up as read-only on my iMac desktop, but when I load the file onto my iPad, it's still editable.
Any ideas re: how to make Keynote files read-only?
I've tried to export the files as PDF and load them into iBook, but some of Keynote's basic "build" functions won't work this way.  Specifically, I have files set up with questions and answers (ie - a question appears, and you have to tap the screen to see the answer, but this "build" function seems to disappear when I get it to show up in iBook).
Any ideas how to make Keynote files read-only?  I am happy to use another program, but I want the students to tap the screen in order to see the answer to a question.
    Thanks!

as long as $PATH is set, you shouldn't need to reconnect them (i think).  if you send the list of apps through | awk -F '/' '{print $NF}' | that'll strip the path
/edit: added the "(i think)" part

  • MDT 2010 - Validation Error: The deployment share is read-only, so no changes can be made

I keep getting the above listed error when trying to update the rules on one of my deployment shares.  I've even gone so far as to remove the read-only flag on everything in the share, it doesn't help.
As a workaround, I've been editing the CustomSettings.ini directly, but I'd really like this to work.  Any ideas?
As an aside, the 'Alert me when someone responds to this post' never seems to work here.  And yes, I've checked my spam folder as well...

Ok, it seems to be related to the MDT WizardEditor, but I'm not sure how.  I logged on to the server and was able to update the deployment share several times.  I closed the MMC, opened the WizardEditor, opened the Deploy.xml thing inside the WizardEditor, closed WizardEditor, reopened MMC - READ ONLY.
    Very weird.

  • Files/folders created in Windows share are read-only... why and how to fix?

    Client: MacBook Pro running 10.7.5
    Server: Windows 7 desktop
I'm sharing a folder from the Windows 7 machine and mounting it on my Mac using Finder's "Connect to Server..." and an smb:// URI. I'm providing a user ID/password for an account on the Windows 7 box that has full control over the shared folder, via smb://userid:password@server/share.
The volume mounts properly on my desktop, can I can see files/folders there as expected. However:
If I create a folder, it's read-only. I cannot create any files inside (or even see inside), rename the folder, or delete the folder. The folder has a badge: red circle with bar.
If I create a file, it's read-only. I cannot rename it, delete it or edit it.
If I examine File Info via Finder on any of these files or folders, under Sharing & Permissions it says "You have custom access."
If I try to delete these files/folders, I get error code -8072. I can delete them from the command-line, but I can't otherwise manipulate them.
I've verified on the Windows box that the user ID I'm using has full control of the folder. I've also set it so Everyone has full control, with no difference.
This seems to have been a recent change in behaviour (a few weeks ago I was copying data to this drive, no problem), and it's driving me crazy because I can't figure out how to fix it.

    L145:
It is always good counsel to Repair Disk Permissions (from the internal HDD) before and after any new installation.
To change permissions in our Applications Folder:
    Select Applications Folder.
    Get Info (Command + i)
Go down to Ownership & Permissions
Click on arrow next to Details to expand.
    Click on lock and authenticate
    Owner is system
    Group is admin
Change all permissions to Read & Write except Others
    Other can Read only.
Please do not hesitate to post back should you have any further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Share iPhoto library: users have read only access

I would like to share my iPhoto library with another user on my machine...BUT...I want them to have read only access to that library. I have done some searching and have only found solutions that give all users read/write access to the library. If anyone can help me do this I would really appreciate it.
Furthermore, I would like to be able to give "no access" to the 2nd user on a file to file basis. For instance, I would like to import photos and set a few to "no access" and hopefully those files wouldn't show up in the 2nd users library but the rest would with read only access.
    Is this possible???

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Check out my post in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=369124&tstart=0. It will do exactly what you want. The other users will have their own library, can edit, delete or do what they want but the source files will be untouched. You could put them in a folder giving them Read access to the folder only and let them point their alias based library to that folder. Don't think you'd want to use the Shared folder as they would have access to the source files via the Finder that way.

  • Outlook 2010 - share contacts - read only ?

I have shared my contacts by using the Share Contacts tool.
When I did this Outlook displayed a message about giving read only access - I clicked Yes.
The other user can access my contacts but can modify the list.  I don't know why this is happening because the read only setting should prevent any modification, should it not?

    Hi,
Let's try removing the permission from both Contact Folder permission and Delegate:
    1. Right click on the Contacts folder, choose Properties, then
Permissions tab, select the user, click Remove button.
    2. FILE -> Account Settings ->
Delegate Access -> select the user, click Remove button.
Make sure permissions have been removed from both, then try to share the contacts again, check if the issue persists.
    Thanks,

  • SQL 2012 AlwaysOn cluster IP not moving after failover, causing database to be read-only

    SQL Server Cluster Name: SQLDAG01
    SQL Server Cluster IP: 10.0.0.50
    Cluster Listener IP: 10.0.0.60
    Node 1 Name: SQL01
    Node 1 IP: 10.0.0.51
    Node 2 Name: SQL02
    Node 2 IP: 10.0.0.52
Everything is fine when SQL01 is the primary. When failing over to SQL02, everything looks fine in the dashboard but for some reason the cluster IP, 10.0.0.50, is stuck on node 1. The databases are configured to provide secondary read access. When executing
a query on SQLDAG01, I get an error that the database is in read-only mode. Connectivity tests verify that SQLDAG01, 10.0.0.50, connects to SQL01 even though SQL02 is now the primary.
I've been Googling this for the better part of the day with no luck. Any suggestions? Is there a Powershell command force the cluster IP to move to the active node or something? Also I'm performing the failover as recommended, from Management Studio connected
    to the secondary node.

This was the answer, it had been setup to use the cluster name instead of the application name. Whoever installed Sharepoint connected it to SBTSQLDAG01 instead of SHAREPOINT01. Once we changed Sharepoint to connect to SHAREPOINT01, the failover worked as
expected. We did have a secondary issue with the ARP cache and had to install the hotfix from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2582281 to resolve it. One of the Sharepoint app servers was failing to
ping the SQL node after a failover, the ARP entry was stuck pointing to the previous node. This article actually helped a lot resolving that: http://blog.serverfault.com/2011/05/11/windows-2008-and-broken-arp/
One thing I did notice is that the SQL failover wizard does not move cluster groups "Available Storage" and "Cluster Group", I had to move those through the command line after using the wizard. I'm going to provide the client with a Powershell script that
moves all cluster groups when they need to do a manual failover. This also happens to be why the Sharepoint issue started, "Cluster Group" is what responds to the cluster name SBTSQLDAG01. Moving that group over to the node that has the active SQL cluster
group also made it work properly, but using the application name is the correct method.
Thanks everyone for all your help. Although the nitpicking about terminology really didn't help, that was a pointless argument and we really could have done without it. Yeah I know 2008 called is "Failover Cluster Manager" and MSCS is the "2003 term" but
really, they're basically the same thing and we don't really need to derail the conversation because of it. Also, If you look at the screenshot below you can clearly see "AlwaysOn High Availability" in SQL Management Studio. That's what it's called in SQL,
that's where you do all the work. Trying to tell me it's "not a feature" is wrong, pointless, and asinine, and doesn't get us anywhere.
Sorry it took so long to get back, I was off the project for a couple weeks while they were resolving some SAN issues that caused the failover to happen in the first place.

  • After migrating my share using robocopy destination share ends up being read only

I'm trying to migrate a share from a old fileserver  to a windows server 2008. I use robocopy to copy  and it seems like it copies the permissions and all of the data. I have done this at least 5 times (i checked the permissions and everything looks
the same as the source share) The problem is That the destination will become read only and i cannot take it off read only.
this is how im copying the share
    robocopy C:\source D:\destination /mir /sec /r:1 /w:1
ive also tried it with /secfix  ive also tried /a-:r
    same result

    Hi,
I think it is caused by design.
In new systems, customized folders will show as Read Only and it will not cause any problem in accessing. See this article:
You cannot view or change the Read-only or the System attributes of folders in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

If you still would like to uncheck the mark, see the steps provided in above article with the command "attrib".
If you have any feedback on our support, please send to [email protected]
it does cause problems accessing the data. user's are unable to save anything on the share when this happens. any solutions?

  • Change public share access to read only for public and full access to selected users

Hi, new to the community just purchased a recertified WDMyCloud 2TB after my 2 years old MyBookLive 2TB HD died due to accidental power cable unplugging. I've got everything setup including MiniDLNA by following instructions on this forum and everything is working  exactly as I want it to except public share. I want public share to be set to read only access for public and full access to certain users (just myself at the moment) and having a "upload" folder within this share with full public access to everything in this folder would be a bonus. I tried login in to ftp with root user and removing write permission for public but that blocks me out as well. I'm sure it's possible by doing some majic on SSH but I wouldn't have a clue so hoping someone here would be able to help me out.

    Mr_Khan wrote:
What i want is public to have read only access to file server. Public as in users who do not have a user account on mycloud. E.g someone who connects to to my home network for the first time and is able to browse and download content from public share. I'm aware of being able to set indivual access to shares for users like full access, read only and no access but public users won't have a user account.Through the My Cloud UI interface what you seek to do is not possible. The public share like all other share folders are an all or nothing affair when using the adminstration UI. When using the administration UI you do not have granular control on shared folders to limit non users to read only access or set permission levels for subfolders. The workaround to do what you seek and have the public folder set for read only is to change the folder settings via SSH. It may take some work to set the folder security so that users can read/write to the public folder while the guests only have read access. However, if you reboot the WD My Cloud or update the WD My Cloud firmware those settings may be reset back to the default settings where the entire public folder is read/write for all. There are way to prevent this but again it will take a bit of coding to do so via SSH. See this link (even though its for the WD My Book Live) for a starting point on how to use SSH to change the permission levels on the public folder. Another option if one doesn't go the SSH route is to turn off public sharing for the public folder then create a "guest" user account and give that "guest" account read only access to the public folder while all other user accounts have full read/write access.

  • Caching read-only data in a weblogic cluster: Need Help

    Hello,
I'm working on the development of a web site that will be based on a weblogic cluster spread across several weblogic instances running on several unix boxes.
To avoid frequent hits to the database, I would like hold a huge amount of data in the application's in-memory cache. The idea is to query the database at startup and store the results in memory for the life of the JVM.
I have three questions around this:
    1. Is it advisable to store this data in the form of read-only entity beans?
    2. If not, what other options do I have?
    3. In some rare cases, a back-end script might change (and commit) data contained in one or two of these 64000 records. What is the best way of propagating these data changes across the cluster?
Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.
