  • Why can't iTunes play music from read-only external hard drive?

I have a write-protected external hard-drive which I keep all of my iTunes media on. iTunes recognizes all of the files, including the metadata on the id3 tags, and can find the files in Windows Explorer. However, it cannot play the files while the drive remains write-protected. Is there a work around for this as I would prefer to keep the hard-drive protected? Why does iTunes require write-access to play songs? Other media players have no problem playing from my read-only external hard-drive. Thanks for any help

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
When you say you can't play through both devices at the same time, what happens when you try, are you able to select multiple speakers, do they deselect themselves, do you not get the option or does it just not work when you select multiple speakers.

  • Why my new iMac won't read my external hard drive?

Why my new imac won't read my external hard drive??

    Liz,
Sorry for not responding sooner, I support your position completely - as for the external drive I assumed that the individual was a previous mac user and knew about that (my mistake) at home I have a couple of external drives
one drive is acknowledged regardless of format (mac/win) its a partitioned drive.... the other one - far as the mac is concerned does exist when i connect it.  I believe its a win only drive (will have to check the specs on it) but it works on the win-notebooks.
so my point of reference was coming that perspective, with no additional posts I have to assume you had the correct answer.  have a great day.

  • How do I get Photoshop Elememnts 7.0 to read my external hard drive?

I have a signature 500 gp hard drive that pse 7.0 will not find or read.  In order for me back up photos I must do it through Digital Photo Professional or trhough Windows.  No matter what I try i cannot seem to get pse to read the external hard drive.  Can anyone shed some light on this subject?

Just to be sure...I'm reading your post as your external is not available in the navigation list.
I'm assuming the USB (or firewire) is connected to your computer. I have a couple and have on occasion turned one on and had the USB plugged in for the one that was off.
This next link probably isn't going to help as it's how to navigate to an external...but I'll include it anyway.

Not sure what else it can be assuming the external is good and doesn't have any compatibility issues with your OS or Elements.  Hopefully, someone else will pipe up if they have any ideas.

  • I have updated my software on my Mac to OS X v 10.9.5 and now my mac doesnt read any external hard drives? please help

HI, I updated my software of my Mac Pro to OS X v 10.9.5, after I installed it, my MAC doesn't read any external hard drives. Not sure what to do now. Please help? Is there a way of updated drivers

I have no idea where to change that

  • Why did lion stopped reading my external hard drives?

I have a MBP which used to work fine with snow leopard, had also Paragon's NTFS software to allow reading my external hard drives (Western Digital's My Passport and Passport Essential with about 2.5 TB worth of data, music, photos, etc.) I decided to upgrade to Lion and after that... poof! my hard drives will show grayed on the disk utility with the "not mounted" message and my MBP will not read the data, even though it can access them, run the WD utility, unlock the drive but... nothing.
Any ideas on how to fix? I event spent the morning yesterda wit the Geniuses at the Apple store and they were clueless too. I did show them on a couple of snow leopard machines my data but they could not understand how to explain he issue. I loaded the WD's drivers for Mac (OS  X Lion support as advertised on their website) but nothing happens.
Fortunately I can still read my data on any other computer (my kids MB's, my office Windows, etc) but it is truly dissapointing that Lion has brought down all the good stuff Mac / Apple had been known about.
    Any takers to this one?

Has the connection changed e.g. a different usb port?
You may need to allocate a permanent drive letter to the external hard drive.

  • USB ports won't read portable external hard drive

I'm having a problem with both of my USB ports on my PowerBook G4. I am able to connect my camera, thumb drive and other small USB devices without problem, but when I try to connect my Western Digital 250gb portable external hard drive, it just makes a clicking noise and never appears on my desktop.
I'm pretty sure there isn't an issue with the external drive because I can use it when I plug it into my Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub (which is also plugged into the wall). When I first got the external hard drive, it worked perfectly when plugged directly to my computer.
I will be spending the next few months traveling in an area with limited electricity, so it would be very beneficial to be able to use my external drive without having to carry the Belkin hub.
    Thanks!

Im having the same problem. When I first got my Western Digital Passport (same as yours but 320 GB) I plugged it in to my 09 Mac Mini and it asked if I wanted it to be my Time Machine drive. I clicked yes. After that I let it backup my files once and then ejected it.i took it to my Powerbook G4 15" 1.5Ghz and plugged it in. Nothing happened. All it did was spin and slow down, spin and slow down and it made 2 clicks in between. After waiting like 5 minutes i took it to my only Windows computer, a Sony Vaio laptop from the same era as my Powerbook, and plugged it in. It said "Found new hardware" and went through that process. When it was done I went into "My Computer" to see if it had shown up. Nope! Yet again the **** hard drive failed to show up. So then I plugged it back in to my Mac Mini and reformatted it and made sure it was reformatting to the DOS compatible file format(FAT). After it was done I went and plugged it back into my Powerbook and again no luck. So I tried the Vaio and IT WORKED! ***!

  • How can I get my new Mac book Pro to read my external hard drive?

I have recently upgraded to the new MacBook Pro and have a new 2T external hard drive. I used my old MacBook Pro to transfer all my files from my old 1T hard drive of the same make to the new one. This all worked without isssue and I can open the ne external hard drive on my old Mac but my new Mac is reading it. It does not show up in finder at all but it does show up in Disk Utility. Any suggestions? Do I need to do something on my new Mac for it to be read? The new Mac has no problem with the smaller USBs I use.

  • My time machine back up error and now it says it can not read my external hard drive

I have a MacBook Pro Yosemite ...... I was backing up to a WD Elements external hard drive disk and I was in mid back up and everything was going fine..... then an error and when I went back to it ..... it said it no longer can read my disk? What can i do?

A  whole  lot  about  Time  Machine for help with TM problems.  Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM.  See also Mac 101- Time Machine.
Use Disk Utility to repair the TM drive.  If that doesn't help, and you don't find help from the above, then erase the drive and start a new TM backup.

  • Can a PC and a Mac read my external hard drive?

I just recently got a MacBook Pro. I have an external hard drive with all my pictures and music on it. I plugged this into my Mac and went to back it up with Time Machine, but it said it had to remove everything currently on the external since it was formatted to a PC. I made sure to save everything on there, went ahead with the back up, and put everything back on. Today, I tried to plug the external into my PC at work to take a look at some stuff and I wasn't able to open the external at all. I'm assuming this is becuase I reformatted it to the Mac. Is there any way to make it so I can use my external on both my work PC and my home MacBook? Thank you

    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select the external hard drive (entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to MBR then click on the OK button. Set the format type to MSDOS (FAT.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

  • Why can't my macbook pro / macbook air read FAT32 external hard-drive?

I have a USB external hard drive that's formatted as FAT32. It worked fine under Windows and Ubuntu Linux.
here is what it shows under ubuntu:
    Disk /dev/sdc: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders, total 976773168 sectors
    Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

    /dev/sdc1            2048   976773119   488385536    b  W95 FAT32
As you can see its file system is FAT32, and as I understand FAT32 read/write is supported on all MACs.
However when I plug it to either a Macbook pro or a Macbook air, it said:
The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.

  • OS X Mavericks doesn't read my external hard drive

    Dear Apple Support Community,
Yesterday I bought a new MacBook Pro with OS X Mavericks.
I tried to connect by quite new external hard drive bought in Germany, a Spaceloop 3.0 1.5 Tb by CnMemory.
I can see the external drive on my desktop but it looks like it is empty, although there are something like 600 Gb of data in it.
I reconnected it to my old white MacBook and everything looks fine.
    Do you have any suggestion?
Thank you in advance for the help,
    Marco

@banakaffalata thank you for sharing your experience, I am really sorry for your data loss... :/
I have two more hard drive but I'll run a backup before connecting them to the laptop with Mavericks.
Fortunately I haven't lost anything so far, and I also managed to understand better how things work.
It basically takes around 15 mins to Mavericks to read my hard drive.
This means that anytime I try to do something before 15 mins I get errors or crashes.
After 15 mins I can read and copy everything from the external drive to laptop, but I cannot delete any file from the external drive (error code -50).
    Any idea?
I will write to CnMemory to get their opinion too. This hard drive has been bought one month ago and is a USB 3.0, should be absolutely compatible and still works perfectly with Snow Leopard (never had the chance to try it with Lion, though).
Regarding deactivating the drive, this is an option on the Disk Utility area (sorry if I'm not using the correct terminology, but my laptop is set to Italian). Basically, when I first connected my hard drive to the laptop, the drive got deactivated. As I wrote you some posts ago, I reactivated the external drive from my old laptop.
I initialised the drive as Mac Os Journaled by using the faster initialisation available from my old laptop (I was running out of time and the second faster initialisation was going to take several hours, apparently). When I tried to initialise the external drive from the new laptop I got an error saying that it was not possible to deactivate the hard drive, thus it was not possible to initialise it.
Thanks again for the help, Mark, much appreciated.

  • IPad as intermediary between cf card reader and external hard drive?

Would it be possible, using any combination of accessories, to use an ipad to facilitate the download of my canon 7d's video files from a cf card to an external hard drive? I bought a netbook to do this and I just hate it. Not that it doesn't do it's job but that's all i need it for and i'd rather use the ipad if possible. any ideas?

No - you cannot connect an external drive to the iPad.

  • Why cannot my macbook air read my external hard drive?

First of all, I have an external hard drive (Western Digital - WD5000H1U-00). I went to their website, downloaded the WD driver installer, and then installed the drivers. I even had restarted my MBA but when i plug the usb cable of my external hard drive, MBA can't read it. Why is that so? In my other computers, the external hard drive could be read.

It's probably formatted for Windows. Plug the hard drive into your MacBook Air. Open Disk Utility (User Name>Applications>Utilities). Go to the Partition tab. Select 1 under Volume Scheme and also click on options and choose GUID. Click Apply. That's it. But if you have any files on that drive, back it up because this option is going to erase your drive.
