'Read only' hard drives/SD Card

I have run into this problem multiple times, with many different hard drives and SD Cards. When I plug the drive into my USB port and select 'Get Info', the permissions always says 'Read only'. Is there a security or sharing feature that I can turn off to enable me to write on external hard drives.
This occurs when the drive is formatted using a PC, in DOS format, I believe. If I format the drive into OSX Journaled, everything is fine. But it's annoying when a colleague gives me his USB key to put a file on and I can't because I can't write on it. The other example is with my SD Cadr for my camera, I can format the card on my camera, then I can't write on it from my computer, but if I format the card on my computer, then I can't write on it from my camera. This is beginning to be a big pain. Before Mountain Lion, I could write no problem,  I believe there is something wrong with the permissions.
Any thoughts?

I hope this thread of yours gains some traction as I am having a similar issue
I have a Windows-based home server here in the house, I can use "SMB://WHS_SERVER" to connect to it (just like I could in Lion & Mountain Lion) and can see anything that is on it's C: drive, but I can't see any actual files or folders on any one of the other three drives on the machine....
All four hard drives are NTFS and have the same admin user with full permission (to which I am telling OSX to log in as when it prompts me)
I've tried Paragon NTFS, OSX Fuse, and Tuxera...  all to no avail.....
I just don't get why I can see everything on one drive but not the other (and could see all on Lion/Mountain-Lion), nothing has changed on the Windows server

  • How do I load MacOS 9.2 to my MacOS 10.4.6 only hard drive?

    Question.
How do I load MacOS 9.2 to my MacOS 10.4.6 only hard drive so I can run "Classic" programs?
I have the MacOS 9 install disk.
    Thanks,
    -Apple //GS

If your PowerBook shipped with a separate Mac OS 9 installation CD, insert it into your computer and restart with the C key held down. Once the CD has started up, double-click the icon of the hard disk and check whether the folder System:Library:CoreServices has a smiling Mac icon; if so, drag the item Finder onto the desktop. In either case, install Mac OS 9, and then select the Finder item if you moved it earlier and choose Put Away from the Special menu.
If your PowerBook did not ship with a separate Mac OS 9 CD, which is the default on a 12-inch PowerBook, use the computer's original disks to add the Classic environment.
A retail Mac OS 9 CD will not boot any PowerBook G4 except for the original model, which will run from the universal Mac OS 9.21 CD.

  • Bridge cs6 export - only hard drive option is present. I want ftp and social network module

I want to export my images right from the bridge. Uploading them to different social sites and ftps is a bit of a hassle and it is easy to forget something in the process. It would be so much better if I could just drag files to desired locations/presets.
I've seen something like that in the blogs (but with lower version of CS) where people have facebook and other options. But I can see only hard drive module.
Is it possible? If so - why don't I have this option? What can I do?

If you don’t see the four modules, click the flyout menu and choose “Manage Modules.”
Make sure all four are checked. If you don’t see the four listed, click the little gear, and from ITS flyout menu, choose “Check for Updates.” When you’re through, click the small “Done” button at the bottom to return to the Export Panel main window.
You can start using the export modules directly, but every time you use them you’ll have to go through a long export process. Use presets to streamline this operation, by saving all the work for re-use. You can create multiple presets; for example, you might have several presets for Facebook depending on whether you want to send the images to your wall, or a specific album. We’ll step through the Facebook setup first.
In the Export Panel, highlight “Facebook” and click on the “+” icon at the bottom to Add a new Preset.
The “Add Preset” dialog appears, and the first thing you will need to do is authenticate with Facebook. Note that you will need to authenticate every time you create a new preset, even with the same service, but you won’t need to authenticate when you actually export your images. Click on “Sign In.”
Two things happen: Your browser will be launched, and you’ll see the authentication page from Facebook. You’ll need to enter your credentials, and you can check “Keep me logged in to Adobe Bridge Export Panel.”
    Etc. etc.
You can follow the rest of the instructions here:

  • Mac Mini won't read external hard drive

Hello, I have an external Toshiba hard drive and my Mac Mini will not read it.  It was originally used on Windows.  I plugged the hard drive into my Macbook and it worked as a read-only device.  I can take stuff off of it but can not write stuff onto it on my Macbook.  I want to use it so I can back up files on my Mac Mini, but it will not read it.  I know I have to format it to make it writable with Mac, but I want to make it a read only device on my Mac Mini because I want to back up all the data already on it and my Mac Mini has 400gb of its hard drive available.  How can I get my Mac Mini to read the Hard Drive?

If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Boot into Recovery and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the System Management Controller
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • How to read external hard-drive from all users

    Hello everybody !
I have a Lacie Porshe Design external hard-drive for my Mac.
I have 2 user accounts which both are "admin".
Since yesterday, when I plug my external hard-drive, I cannot read the files on it unless I'm on the first "admin" account. I want to read the files from all the users account. There's a little red stop sign on the files and it tells me I have not the permission to view the files when I'm on the second user account.
Why does it work only with the first "admin" account and not the second one ? How to I disable this ?
It worked perfectly yesterday and I have no idea why.
Thank you very much guys !

I am sorry for the confusion.
The technician fresh-installed all the programs needed on a session they created called admin. On it there is all the programs but nothing else.
In case of trouble with the programs and licenses, the techicians asked for us to leave this ADMIN session untouched and to do our project and personnals things on our own new session.
    So I got
ADMIN - only the programs installed by the technicians, admin status enable first
PERSONNAL - all my personnal files and the programs installed by the techicians, admin status enable later
When I read my Lacie Hard-Drive from the PERSONNAL account, I do not have the permission to read my old Time Machine backup files from my previous mac even thought the PERSONNAL account got the admin status enable. But when I read the Hard-Drive from the ADMIN account, I can read those files.
    Hopefully this is clearer.
Thank you for your time !

I have iMovie 09. I just erased my external hard drive, but it is still formatted for the mac. However, iMovie will not recognize the hard drive. It shows the only hard drive available is the computers. How do I get the external hard drive to show up?

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...

  • HT1338 My macbook pro(2010) is not reading the hard drive, but the hard drive works through the USB?

    Hi everyone,
My Macbook pro(2010) is not reading the internal Hard Drive. At first I thought it to be a hard drive gone bad, so i bought a new hard drive. My macbook is still not reading the Hard Drive. I am able to use the original hard drive through a external(USB) connection. Also, when the macbook turns, there is a redelling sound. Can anyone offer me any suggestions to what the problem might be?

It sounds like the internal cable connecting the HDD to the logic board is improperly connected or faulty.  An appointment at an Apple genius bar might be a good option.  The repair should not be too expensive.
    Ciao.

  • DV7 Not reading second hard drive

I have a DV7-4280us and have recently pruchased the hard drive caddy kit and a Seagate M9T 2TB Hard Drive.  Once installed the laptop will not read the hard drive.  I have looked in disk management and it does not show there either.  My next thought was either the cable or the motherboard connection was not working correctly so I installed a WD 1TB drive and it was picked up flawlessly.  I then went to my other DV7 laptop, a DV7-3173nr, and it was able to pick up the Seagate M9T 2TB drive with no problem.  How can I get my DV7-4280us to pick up the 2Tb drive?

    Hi Airopossum7,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Pavilion dv7-4280us Entertainment Notebook and not seeing the new HDD. Here is a link to restoring the BIOS. The restore BIOS to default settings will get the Notebook to look for the HDD. If that does not help try to a hardware test.
Please let me know how this goes.
    Thanks.

  • Can only read external hard drive, not write to

    Hi
I have a Mac Book Pro and a 60GB external Hard Drive which I use to transfer files between my Win PC (!!) and my Mac. transferring files from PC to Mac is fine using the HDD but when I try to copy files from my Mac to the HDD it says I cannot write to the drive as it is read only. How do i make it writable as well as readable. Its formatted as Windows NT Filesystem if that helps.

    mp_photo wrote:

    Hi,
    that is the culprit.
Mac OSX is only capable of reading from NTFS drives but can not write to them.
    Possible solutions:
Reformat the external drive to FAT32 (using Disk Utility and 'MS-DOS'),
but be aware of the the size limit of 4GB for a single file
    use MacFuse: http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/
Caution: reformatting the drive will delete all files on it, so make a backup before.
    Regards

  • My only hard drive in the PC displays as, Sixth IDE Master..Why? It works Slow 2

I currently have only 1 thats connected to the PC
For some odd reason when I start the PC the screen tells me its the Sixth IDE Master drive
and my CDRW and DVDRW roms display as Primary IDE Master and Slave
The CDRW and DVDRW are connected to IDE1 in the motherboard
and my Hard drive is connected to IDE2 as the Master drive and IDE3 slot is empty
So my question is.. How can I make it display as Secondary IDE Master?
I changed the option in BIOS from IDE to RAID.. I'm not sure what RAID does.. but when I see the RAID screen when the computer starts up it shows my hard drive as non-Raid, maybe I have to install drives for the HD? I have noticed my HD runs way slower than when I connected it to IDE1, the reason it's not connected to IDE1 but IDE2 is because my cd-roms have to be connected there, IDE1 is the closest to them and I don't have a long enough IDE cable to reach them from IDE2 since that slot is all the way down on the mobo..
I'm running a 3.4gh P4 PC with 1gb ram on an MSI 925X Neo mobo
Any more info you guys need?

IDE1 will give you Primary Master and Slave.
IDE2 belongs to the embedded VIA6410 IDE/RAID controller. You need to have its driver installed then only you can get the fullspeed of it, otherwise it will run slow.
2ndary IDE master belongs to the SATA ports. There are 4 ports of SATA and SATA doesn't hav eMaster and Slave. So it will take out 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th IDE. So... VIA6410 becomes 6th IDE
Everything else is OK. I suggest you put your main HDD, the one with OS installed at IDE1. And your not-so-frequently-accessed drives like the optical drives, put on IDE2/IDE3 on VIA6410. This will help speeding up everything.

  • Sudden fail to read external hard drive

Hi, Im using both OSX and Windows 8.
And I usually store my stuffs such as movies, documents, and some utilities in my 1TB external hard drive. And Its format is "Mac OS Extended".
There was no problem until just now. After I got home and tried to load out some stuffs inside this external hard drive, finder says it could not find this external hard drive.
So I executed disk utility in order to repair disk ASAP before this situation getting worse. but this time, Disk Utility says "Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk... disk, and restore your backed-up files."
I was so confused about how this happened to this EHD, and don't know what to do with my 8years old documents and movies inside.
With all my wishes, I connected this EHD with my Windows8, somehow it can read this EHD and nothing problems. And still my stuffs alive.
Any suggestions to make my Mac to read this EHD again in order to solve this inconvenience?

Copy all the information onto an ExFAT formatted hard drive.
Your hard drive is likely dying.
ExFAT is likely more readable than HFS+ by both machines.
    Alternatives here for formatting are:

    Data recovery options are here:

You should never let yourself only have one copy of critical data.  Backup your data regardless.

  • Reading External Hard Drive

My brand new macbook pro 13" only sometimes reads my external hard drive. Any ideas what to try?

    Mike,
I did move it like you have shown in the article. I can see all my music, it just has exclamation points before each song. When I try to play a song it says it can not find the file but ask if you would like to locate it. I can click the folders to get there and click on the song. The exclamation point is gone from that song and it will now play. But I would have to do that with every song.

  • 10.9.5 won't read external hard drives

I  just updated my imac with OS X 10.9.5 and now I can not read two of my three external hard drives although I was able to read them just fine before
the update.  The one I can read is dedicated as my Time Machine; it is a WD My Passport 1 tb drive that I don't believe is formatted in FAT32.  The other
two hard drives are NTFS formatted but I installed Tuxera to enable translation (based on another Apple forum) and it has worked great.  I can read all of these external hard drives on my macbook air and my other imac at home so it is not the hard drives or cables themselves.  Its possible that Tuxera may not read on this new OS version; my recollection is that Western Digital places their own version of Tuxera on the hard drive to enable translation.
Under Finder I do not see the hard drives under "Devices".  I do see the hard drive in Disk Utility but the name of the drive that appears beneath the drive description is grayed out.  I tried Mounting the drive but it did not work.  I tried "verify disk" but it does not work.  Any suggestions that could help me read these drives once again would be most appreciated!
    thanks much

  • Variety of problems- not reading from hard drive, etc.

My 30 GB iPod Photo died a while ago, so I recently received an 80 GB 5G for the holidays. However, it hasn't been working correctly. I have a whole list of problems- most would seem to stem from it not reading from the hard drive. Note that almost every single one of these can be resolved by resetting the iPod, but having to do that over and over and losing my place in podcasts and that sort of thing is really annoying. I already tried restoring it completely once, and it didn't seem to help. What's odd is that, shortly after getting the iPod, I went on vacation for almost a week, in a warmer climate. It worked perfectly fine the entire time I was there, but then started up again upon my return.
    - The classic just not playing songs/videos, where you select a song and the artwork doesn't load and it doesn't play then just ends. Sometimes accompanied by freezing.
    - Skipping. I've never heard an iPod skip before, but it's happened several times. Also, I've had a weirder problem where a second or so of sound from earlier in a podcast repeats every so often during the rest of it. Just turning the iPod off and on again helps with that, though. And sometimes something will randomly stop in the middle.
    - Not recognizing data. My old iPod did this all the time. You reset it, and there are no songs, videos, etc. listed. If you connect it to the computer, iTunes classifies all the data as "other." It generally goes away if you reset it again. This has also happened partially, where some things show up but not others.
    - Sometimes, during a video, the audio will suddenly become a horrible screeching sound. You can stop the video and try to play something else, but then it freezes. The video might work perfectly fine later- that's not the problem.
    - Slow functioning. This might be normal- things like the graphics "skipping" while both listening to something and playing a game. Or sometimes it just seems generally sluggish to respond.
    - Not working with the case. I have this case (I had almost the same one for my last iPod), and all the above problems occur mostly (though not entirely) while the iPod is inside. I doubt the case itself is the problem- I can't see any way it would be preventing things like reading from the HD- but they definitely seem to be tied together. Sometimes when it's in the case the controls will take several seconds to respond to button pushes (play/pause, select, etc.) but respond perfectly fine to scrolling/volume change.
I think I've pretty much exhausted my options for trying to fix things myself. Should I just send it back and hope the replacement is better? Will Apple even agree to replace it if they can't see it malfunctioning?

Also, though no one's replied yet, I remembered more problems:
    - Displaying the wrong album art (only occasionally).
    - Colors FREAKING OUT when viewing photos. The way to get rid of this seems to be to go back to the photo library, select a different photo (which hopefully loads correctly), going back up to the photo library again, and reselecting the original photo. But it's still annoying.

  • Can't read external hard drive since security update

    Hi,
I hope one of you guys can help me with my problem. I have an iMac running 10.6.2 and use an external 1GB hard drive (MyBook Studio I think it's called - connected via Firewire800) for my time machine backups and to store movies.. on two partitions. All used to work fine until I installed the latest security update a few days ago.
Since then I can't connect to the hard drive anymore. Whenever I boot my Mac I get the message that the disk I inserted can't be read and I get the options to initialise, ignore or eject. When I open disk utility it recognises the hard drive but states it is unformatted (which is not true).
I plugged the hard drive via USB into my Macbook - same message. I tried repairing the disk permissions on my iMac - no difference. I can't repair any permissions on the external drive as it is all greyed out. Also tried resetting the parameter RAM - no success.
Any suggestions how I could get back my data on the external drive?
    Thanks for your help!

If Disk Utility on two different Macs don't recognize anything on the drive, it's in bad shape.
If you have +Disk Warrior+ (version 4.2 only) or another heavy-duty disk repair app, there's a small chance it might be able to find and repair the file system, but it's highly doubtful.
I hope you have backups of the movies. If you do, try to completely reformat the disk. Take the time to do a complete erase -- click the Erase tab, then +Security Options,+ then choose +Zero Out Data.+ That will take a long time. If it fails, the disk is toast. If it completes, the drive may be ok to use, but I'm not sure I'd trust my backups to it.
If you don't have backups of the movies, you need specialized +Data Recovery+ software, or a service that performs the function. It's not cheap, and there are no guarantees.
The app mentioned here most often is +Data Rescue 3,+ but I haven't used it myself, so can't recommend it over any of the others.
Some of these have a free "trial mode," that will tell you if there's anything to be recovered, and perhaps recover a single file. For more, you have to pay the $$.
You'll also need another drive to receive anything it can recover.
Look for apps or services under +Data Recovery+ via Google, VersionTracker.com, or MacUpdate.com.
