Read Out Loud in a different language?

Is it possible to use the Read Out Loud option in a differente language (from English and Spanish) such as Portuguese? How?
Thank you

ilhanbalamur, I am not sure what you are trying to draw my attention to on this page. As I said in my post, I KNOW how to activate the Read Out Loud feature, and my PDFs are fully accessible. Perhaps there is something in the page you suggested that I am missing, but I see nothing there that will help me  troubleshoot Acrobat's crashing when I select Read to End of Page or Read This Document. Please be more specific in your comment.

Read out loud in two languages

I work in an office that prepares many reports in both english and french. A common document will have the english and french running side by side; english in the left column, french on the right. Each language will be one story that flows throughout the document.
A PDF is exported from InDesign. Tags are applied to the PDF and a check of the TAGS panel in Acrobat shows that each language is one story.
What we need if for this document to be able to Read Out Loud, english in its entirety and the same for the french. However, when the document reads out loud it reads the full english column on each page but then goes to the french column on the same page.
How can we make the PDF file read each language completely without reading both english and french for each page?
    Thanks.

  • Adobe Reader's Read Out Loud is glitched.

When I use the r-o-l feature to read my textbooks, the program does not read words with the letter "F" in them correctly.  At first, I believed it was just something weird with the book I was attempting to have it read, so I changed it.  But now I've bought a completely different computer, and have a new class with new text books, and it's still doing it.  For example, the word fire.  It'll read fee-are-ee.  Influence is pronounced in-flamabluence.  Flesh is 'florida-esh'.  It's highly distracting, and I don't know what to do about it.  Any suggestions?
I am using Windows 8, on a pc.

I do not have Reader installed, but in Acrobat, there is a Read Out Loud menu item under the View menu.

  • Read Out Loud won't read tags, reads content instead

    Hi,
I have a PDF generated through a third party library, and it is a tagged PDF (running it in PAC 1.3 and 2.0 says it passes accessibility test) and when I use the Read Out Loud feature on it in Adobe Acrobat Pro XI and Adobe Reader, it ignores all the tags (including any Alternate and Actual text fields) and reads the content of the PDF instead of the tags. It even reads the header and the footer which are marked as Artifacts, which is strange as Artifacts should never be read out loud. When I run NVDA and have it read the PDF, it reads it normally as expected (reads only the tags, and follows the Alternate/Actual text fields).
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/4ouw92
Here's an example of the file. I would expect the Read Out Loud feature to start with "I don't know", but instead it says DEVELOPMENT (an artifact) and then I D N, then I expect it to get to the last line of text before the footer and then simply continue to the second page, but it will instead read the header and the footer before it moves on to the next page. Any reason why it behaves like this? Why it ignores the tags and why it doesn't ignore the artifacts?
    Thanks,
    Dejan

    Hi "a C student",
    Thank you for your reply.
In order to make a sample of the pdf I changed actual code to produce the PDF I have linked to in my original post, and I didn't actually check that it passes PAC 1.3 and 2.0, as I simply believed that my code change did exactly the same thing that the production code does. It of course did not, and I gave you a "possessed" PDF Sorry about that. Here is a new sample, this time done a bit better
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/ndajik
In PAC 1.3 it only warns about bookmarks, in 2.0 it fails the font embedding which should not be an issue and says PDF/UA identifier is not set - this might be the issue, but I do not know how to set it, I understood that all I need is to have the Title, Language and some other metadata fields set for the PDF to be PDF/UA compliant.
Anyway, I hope this sample works out better for you
    Thanks,
    Dejan

  • I have created PDF from hardcopy by using my scanner. After I run OCR option for my PDF by using Acrobat Pro 9. But "Text-to-speech" functionality of the PDF says that an error message comes up that says the page is empty when I turns on the read out loud

I have created PDF from hardcopy by using my scanner. After I run OCR option for my PDF by using Acrobat Pro 9. But "Text-to-speech" functionality of the PDF says that an error message comes up that says the page is empty when I turns on the read out loud option in Acrobat. Kindly help me to sortout this problems?

So I tried generating the same PDFs on two other computers that have Acrobat 9 Pro.  Results were reproduced.  The verdict is:
    - complex PDF files (that is, containing cross-references, tables of contents, and bookmarks) generated by Acrobat 9.x Pro are roughly 2-5x larger than the identical file generated with Acrobat 8.x Pro.
    - different PDF conversion settings make a negligable difference (less than 10% rather than 70-80%).
    - using the "Reduce File Size" or "Optimize PDF" option cuts the file size roughly in half, almost always resulting in a "image downsampling mask" warning message, which requires acknowledgement (that is a problem for batch processing or automation).
    - adding an Acrobat watermark to the file cuts the file size roughly in half.
    - just using Save As to another filename has no effect on file size.
    - generating the PDF in Acrobat 9 with links but no PDF bookmarks still results in the inflated file size.
    - generating the PDF in Acrobat 9 without any links or bookmarks results in approximately the same file size as the Acrobat 8 PDF with full links and bookmarks.
It appears that Acrobat 9's manner of adding links is what's bloating  the files, and in my case it's probably not related to images or image resolution/print quality.  It's a shame, because Acrobat 9 seems to have made some  improvements to the Review Tracker interface, and a few other bells and  whistles which I haven't really gotten around to exporing yet.  But  unless I find a way to keep my links and the PDF file sizes comparable to what I was  getting with Acrobat 8 Pro, it looks like I'm going to stay with Acrobat 8.

  • Can the Read Out Loud tool read tooltips?

    Hello,
I have created a PDF with a text form field where the user will enter his/her name and then print a course completion certificate.  I have named the text form field and added a tooltip.
    1.  It looks fine in Form Edit mode but there is text that looks like it's behind the tool tip.  It is different words than the tooltip and larger font size.  I can't remember how I got that text there.  I just wanted to edit it a little bit but can't find where to do so.  Any suggestions?
    2.  I have made this form accessibile but is there a way to have the Read Out Loud tool actually read the tooltips?
    3.  Also, how do I add a screen shot to this discussion?
    Thanks!

    Any suggestions on this one?
    Thanks.

  • How do I get my Adobe Digital book read out loud.

I am disabled and need to use text to speech. I purchased an ebook which is an Adobe Digital Edition. I have really enjoyed using Adobe Reader with the Read Out Loud feature and was shocked when I discovered I could not use this feature on the Digital Editions. If I knew Adobe cared so little about the disabled I would sought the book in a different format.
Does anyone out there have any ideas on how to be able to get this expensive book read for me?

I do not know quite what you mean by "paid for them to transfer all my data and programs over"...  I'm hoping you are not implying that you simply copied (had copied) programs from your application folder to your new computer.
You still need to go through the installation process to install Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.

  • Read out loud isn't following tag structure across multiple pages

I have an InDesign CC document where the main story falls across several pages. It wraps around a standalone sidebar that fits one page, as well as another sidebar that also jumps to other pages. I set up the element order in the Articles palette, and it looks like the structure is set to read the main story first in its entirety, then move on through the sidebars, each in its entirety.
In Acrobat CC, I set the tab order to use the document structure within Page Thumbnails, and took the other required steps. The accessibility check comes up clean.
However, Read Out Loud reads everything on one page, then moves to the next page. It ignores the InDesign structure. The Acrobat tags window also shows my desired reading order, but it's not being followed.
Is there something else I need to do, or is this reading order just not possible?

Assistive Technology (AT) uses the PDF's structure tree. Without a well-formed structure tree AT will "see" a PDF as a lump of coal.
What's that got to do with ROL? ROL is *not* AT.  ROL is a nice but simple text to speech feature. ROL parses PDF page content left to right top down for western languages. The PDF does not have to be a tagged PDF for ROL to parse the PDF page content (I've been using it to do that snce Acrobat 8 Pro). In sum - Acrobat / Reader ROL only processes through what is renderable text on the PDF page. PDF elements (tags) exist separately from both the logical structure of a PDF and the PDF's page content (discussed in ISO 32000-1, see 14.8).
So, nothing wrong or broken. ROL is doing what it was designed to do.
Try NVDA if you want to parse the structure tree and have the associated content "spoken" to you. I suspect you'll be pleased.

  • Read Out Loud support?

In absence of an Android device in this house-hold, a quick question here:
Does Adobe Reader for Android support 'Read Out Loud' natively? (I don't see it mentioned in online-docs?)
or does it only work in conjunction with Android's build-in accessibility features?
    Thanks heaps,
    Cari

If you have a TTS engine for this language installed on your computer, and the document is properly tagged, then I believe it should work.

  • Adobe Reader X Read Out Loud Problem

I had the previous version of Adobe Reader, and it had a problem. About ten seconds after I opened it, it would pop-up a error window and crash.
Naturally, I uninstalled and then installed Adobe Reader X, which looks great, but when I tell him to read out loud something, it scrolls up to the top of the page\document, as if trying to read it, but won't play a sound. It moved down a single line, and then up again, and just kept on.
I tryed it on several different documents, with different fonts, all supported, and to no good.
I work a lot with Adobe Reader and PDFs, and would like to get a quick answer.
    Looking forward for an answer,
       lakerking008

Same for me. Adobe Reader 10, no updates, no change after uninstall/reinstall. I am using Windows 7 and Microsoft narrator voices work in other applications. Even after copying text to Word, verifying that it is letter by letter typed and choosing a recommended font, then saving as a .pdf and reopening in Adobe Reader X.It also does not matter if I select the text or not.
Gives me the option to "activate" with all other options greyed out. When activated, the other options become available but there is no voice. If I choose "read to end of document" Adobe Reader crashes.

  • Cannot read out loud special characters when text is french

    Hi everyone,
First of all, I hope my english is on par for your understanding. I speak french as first language and we use the French installation of our Adobe products.
Working in the IT department, our clients working in the communications department currently use Acrobat pro X on Mac 10.8 to make accessible PDFs. Before I reinstalled their iMacs with a fresh copy of 10.8, they were working on OSX 10.6, also with Acrobat Pro X. They didn't have the following issue.
Since the fresh 10.8 install, they cannot use the read out loud function properly. As you may know, with french language comes the use of special characters. Lots of them. But Acrobat will not read out loud any sentence or paragraph having special characters like " é, à, ù, è" and such.
I first contacted Adobe, a few weeks ago, through their Live chat function, about this problem. They addressed the issue by stating that they do not support Acrobat X on 10.8. I had to reinstall Acrobat using version XI in order to receive support. Fortunately, I was able to download the correct version and use it in trial mode. Unfortunatly though, I still had the same issue. It seems that I no longer have access to Live chat, so I turn to you all for help.
Also, I have a French voice pack in OSX and when I use the Voiceover function in OSX, outside of Acrobat, the system reads out loud any accents or special characters like it should. This is mainly why I associated the issue with Acrobat and not OSX.
If you need clarifications, ask away and I will get back as soon as possible.
    Thank you for your time.

Used your sentence "TTS is closed October 9th." in a Word file and output a tagged PDF via PDFMaker.
Added Alt Text for the tag that was the parent for the container holding the text string.
ROL with Acrobat 9 Pro and Acrobat X Pro spoke the entered Alt Text.
In short, could not duplicate what you've described.
Perhaps an Acrobat repair or processing any outstanding updates could resolve things.
Or a return to the structure tree may be in order. Look for what is amiss there.

  • Read out loud does not work on Adobe Reader XI.  Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Does anyone know how to repair the Read Out Loud problem with Adobe Reader XI?

    Hi thomash,
Are you running into this problem with all PDFs, or just a select few? If the PDF was created from a scan, and OCR wasn't performed (so there's no "live" text), then there wouldn't be anything to read aloud.
If the issue occurs regardless of the PDF you have open, has anything changed on your system since Read Out Loud worked for you?
    Best,
    Sara

  • Acrobat 9 Pro can't read out loud

I've always been able to use Acrobat's "Read Out Loud" feature to help me proof complex documents by having Acrobat read the PDF aloud while I read the original to check for discrepancies. Since upgrading to Acrobat 9 Pro Extended version 9.4.6 on Windows 7, I can't get the Read Out Loud feature to work. The document is fully tagged, the sound and speakers are working correctly. After activating the Read Out Loud feature (View->Read Out Loud->Activate Read Out Loud), when I select any of the options (e.g., Read This Page Only or Read to End of Document), Acrobat crashes. It doesn't matter if I'm using a PDF generated from Framemaker or one downloaded from Adobe's site.
I've read through Adobe's Help forums and can't find a solution. Has anyone had and successfully resolved this problem?:
    Carol

    Just some nattering -
Maybe a "Repair" of Acrobat 9 will resolve the issue.
May have to move into Acrobat X (first fully "made for Win 7").

  • Read out Loud problem in Adobe Reader X

I tried the Read out loud feature of Adobe Reader X, but it does not seem to be working.
I am using Adobe Reader X on windows XP sp3
when i click activate read out loud
it gives me to more options in the view menu to read current page and read entire file to the end
when I click either option, the option to pause and stop appears in the view menu but i dont hear anything.
    what should I do?

    Thanks for the response.
Yes, this is mostly pie in the sky.  We're interested in taking the
audio from a document read aloud by Adobe Reader and converting it into
a format that can be burned to CD. I'm assuming that we would simply have to record the aloud reading--but I was wondering if Reader gurus might have a better approach.
