Read Receipt Question

If a message shows up on someone's "locked screen" will this automatically mark the message as "read" on the senders phone, or does it only turn into a "read" receipt once the person actually goes into their messages and views it from there?

Scenario: If I have my read receipts off and I opened a message at 7am and turn my read receipts on around 10am, will the other person see I read their message at 7 or 10?

Hi,
I got bit confused, How can I came to know that my e-mail has been successfully sent or not without opening my inbox.
Am sending 50,000 mails per day by using java mail sending program, while sending I am enabled Delivery and Read receipt and I saved message-id in database and I got that receipt back to my inbox.
Then I am reading my Inbox using another java program based on message-id concept, And also I need to parse the body of the mail to update the reason if any message failed.
Here my Inbox received more than 1 lac mails per day as receipts. Because am sending 50,000 mails, So, I got 2 receipt mails for 1 mail, totally 50,000*2=1lac mails in Inbox. My problem is, my reading Inbox java program not able read all 1lac mails at one day. It just reading 5,000 mails per day. When my next day mail sending process started, again i am getting another 1 lac receipts.
Since I am not able to read and delete the receipts completely, mail counts in my inbox getting accumulated. So, I got stuck, How can I do this?
If anybody have any other ideas please share with me.
Already I surfed on net lot, but I can`t find solution for this concept.

I think the big question is why can you not read and remove the mail more quickly? What limits you to reading only 5,000 messages per day?
Also, is this about Oracle Communications Messaging Exchange Server (formerly known as Sun Java Messaging Server)?
If so, please include the output from the "imsimta version" command.

I'm a little fuzzy on your question.
If you are trying to "Bounce" and email, I regret to inform you that Apple removed that feature a few years ago. There are other email programs available that have this capability.

Read Receipts - I see the string that is required to be cut and pasted into Terminal that enables the request for read receipts in Mail. My question is exactly how do you do that?

If the e-mail client asks the recipient if they want to send back a receipt then they can choose what to do depending on the particular e-mail.
See, I strongly disagree there. It is nobody's business whether or not I read an e-mail message, and not only would I never be interested in allowing that, but I would be extremely annoyed if I were constantly hassled with requests to approve a read receipt request. If my mail client behaved that way, I would choose a different mail client, or I would add anyone who sent me a read receipt request to a "ban" rule that would direct their messages straight to the trash.
You say "Privacy becomes an annoyance when it stops the use of useful features," but in this case the debate is about my privacy vs your useful features. In such a case, my privacy always wins. If it were a question of me giving up some privacy to gain features that are useful to me... well, that's a different story, and we all do that to some degree every single day. But this is not that case. Read receipts are all about compromising one person's privacy for another person's gain.
Now, of course, you are welcome to do as you like. I'm sure there are probably e-mail clients that will behave the way you like, and I'm sure there are people who don't care about responding to read receipt requests. However, to expect system-wide changes, or changes to a major e-mail client like Mail, is unrealistic, because there are many people who have the same feelings about this that I do, and who would resist any change such as you suggest extremely strenuously.

Prohibit delivery- and read- receipts

Does anyone know how you can prohibit Mail and Entourage from sending delivery- and read- receipts.
I could only find answers to the question how you can request them yourself, what is not an issue for me.

Mail doesn't send receipts for delivered nor read mail. "Read" receipts aren't supported in any Internet email client I know of, only in proprietary messaging systems such as Outlook/Exchange.
Entourage to the best of my knowledge by default doesn't return delivery receipts either, though I might have missed it in my copy. It appears that the only way to get it to do it is by manually adding special headers.
So if you don't want to be returning receipts, you don't need to worry.

Can Mail (Version 2.1 (752/752.2)) ask for READ receipts

or for that matter can you add any additional headers - it would be useful to do both. I don't mind if it it's permanently on for my work account.

Outlook 2013 with Exchange 2013 keeps giving read receipts

Hello experts,
We have an Exchange 2013 server. All users are joint to the domain, except one user (Windows 8.1) which is in a Workgroup, and using Outlook 2013 with IMAP protocol.
This particular user is having a problem. When he send's any email from Outlook and requests a read receipt, after that he keeps getting hundreds of read receipts in his inbox. I have tried disabling (for temporarily) the Windows server 2012 firewall, but
still having the same issue.
Is this a known bug in Outlook 2013 with Exchange 2013? Any help troubleshooting this?

According to your description, I understand that IMPA account get hundreds of read receipts while he requests a read receipt.
If I misunderstand you concern, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Whether are all account or some special user experience this question? Please do a test in external with IMAP account to double confirm.

Read receipt requested but I'd like to know who sends it before sending receipt.

I often get emails which apparently have requested a read receipt as I am always asked for my SMTP password, which I decline every time. My question is, Can I discover who is requesting the receipts so I can acknowledge them or put them on my permanent junk filter?

Oops, sorry, that was me. (Probably not, but I do request read requests on important messages.)
Read receipts should not be triggered until you open a message, or if you use the default setting of having the message marked read when you preview it. So you should be able to tell which message is associated with the receipt.
(Actually, based on my experience with Outlook, a "didn't read" receipt may be triggered by deleting a message without reading it or moving it to a folder without first marking it read.)
You can create a Message Filter to detect and tag messages with a receipt request. I only tested this on a single message, so it probably requires some refinement.
(1) Create a new Receipt tag
"3-bar menu" > Message > Tag > Manage Tags...
Click Add, then type or paste Receipt, then choose a color. I picked magenta.
(2) Create a new Message Filter
For easier entry, select and copy this text: Disposition-Notification-To
"3-bar menu" > Message Filters > New...
Click New, and name the rule something like: Read Receipt
Click the Subject button and assuming the list does not already show '''Disposition-Notification-To''', choose Customize...
Type or paste Disposition-Notification-To and click Add then OK.
Back in the Filter Rules dialog, change from Customize to Disposition-Notification-To, keep contains on the next button, and type a @ in the text box to the right. This should match any message with a read receipt request.
In the lower section, choose Tag Message and then Receipt. Click OK to save your rule.
Back in the Message Filters dialog, you can click the Run Now button to test it, assuming you have a message in the Inbox with a read receipt requested.
Once you are confident that the correct messages are tagged, you could do something more aggressive with your rule...

Read receipt option?

I need a read receipt option for Mail - sometimes I send large emails that might be too big for client's inboxes - and I need to know they got it - and when I send instructions and jobs to printers, I need them to confirm receipt. I love this feature in Gyazmail on my ibook, but I also want it in AppleMail so I can send these mails on my imac too.
Can anyone suggest a read receipt option that isn't automatic? I don't always want them - just when I click an icon or ask for one via a menu.

As far as I know Apple Mail doesn't provide this feature out-of-the-box. But you can create a custom header by typing the following in a Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.mail UserHeaders '{"Return-Receipt-To" = "[email protected]"; "Disposition-Notification-To" = "[email protected]"; }'
and substituting "[email protected]" with your own email address. However, this will cause Mail to send a receipt request everytime you send an email.

If read receipts are on, will they work on Macbook?

If someone has read receipts turned on on their iPhone, but they read the iMessage from their Macbook, will it still send a read receipt? It seems like it doesn't. Because if this person checks the message from their phone, I see the read receipt. But if they read it from their Macbook, I don't see a read receipt, just that it was delivered. Is this correct? Or is this a bug?

When I setup my new MacBook Pro, something slipped by me and my computer was named First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro (using my real first and last name).
I changed the computer name in Preferences/Sharing to a new name and Preferences/Accounts to just be Mike. I can right click on my account name, choose advanced, and see that everything looks right.
However, If I do a scan of my network with my iPhone using the free version of IP Scanner, it lists my computer as First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro! And it lists the user as First-Last.
So even though another Mac just sees my new computer name, and my home folder is Mike, somewhere in the system the original setup with my full name is still stored. And it's available on a network scan. So my full name might show up at a coffee shop.
Can I fully change the name without doing a complete re-install of Lion and all my apps?

One thought... you said the iPhone displayed your computer's old name? I think that you must have used the iPhone with this computer before you changed the name. So no one else's iPhone should display your full name unless that iPhone had previously connected to your Mac. For example, I did this exact same change, and I use the Keynote Remote app to connect with my MacBook Pro. It would no longer link with my MacBook Pro under the old name, and I found that I had to unlink and then create a new link under the new name. So the answer to your question is, there is nothing you need to do on the Mac, but rather the phone, and no other phone will display your full name.
