Read receipts in  mail

Is there a way to have a read receipt sent to me when my message is read using mail?
Never had a need prior to now but now I do.
Thanks for any help.

If the e-mail client asks the recipient if they want to send back a receipt then they can choose what to do depending on the particular e-mail.
See, I strongly disagree there. It is nobody's business whether or not I read an e-mail message, and not only would I never be interested in allowing that, but I would be extremely annoyed if I were constantly hassled with requests to approve a read receipt request. If my mail client behaved that way, I would choose a different mail client, or I would add anyone who sent me a read receipt request to a "ban" rule that would direct their messages straight to the trash.
You say "Privacy becomes an annoyance when it stops the use of useful features," but in this case the debate is about my privacy vs your useful features. In such a case, my privacy always wins. If it were a question of me giving up some privacy to gain features that are useful to me... well, that's a different story, and we all do that to some degree every single day. But this is not that case. Read receipts are all about compromising one person's privacy for another person's gain.
Now, of course, you are welcome to do as you like. I'm sure there are probably e-mail clients that will behave the way you like, and I'm sure there are people who don't care about responding to read receipt requests. However, to expect system-wide changes, or changes to a major e-mail client like Mail, is unrealistic, because there are many people who have the same feelings about this that I do, and who would resist any change such as you suggest extremely strenuously.

I'm a little fuzzy on your question.
If you are trying to "Bounce" and email, I regret to inform you that Apple removed that feature a few years ago.  There are other email programs available that have this capability.

No, it is not.  The OS X Mail application does not offer this functionality.

Can I get a Read Receipt with Mail, like in Outlook?
    W.W.

It is possible, though not through the GUI. And as Dave points out, asking for a receipt does not mean that you will get one. The magic incantations for requesting receipts are detailed, amongst other places, in this article. It requires using the Terminal, and once set affects all messages you send until you unset it again.
If you search this forum for read receipts (the topic surfaces frequently) you should find a helpful Applescript for turning them on and off, to save using the terminal.

How do you set up read receipts in mail on OSX Mavericks? I've looked under settings for the mail app but can't see anything that I can 'turn on' to get an indication when an email has been read. Thanks for any responses in advance.......

    Hi, there.
Unfortunately, there's no such feature on Mail. No version of it has ever had.
Besides that, read receipts are not good at all. It is up to the recipient whether or not to send a receipt. So you will never know if the recipient never read the email or just didn't send a receipt.

  • Read receipts for mail

Is there any way to get a read receipt with Mail like there was when I had Outlook in a previous life? Cant find how to block a read receipt when requested either. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

The Mail application does not include a read receipt request for sent messages nor does it provide a read receipt without your knowledge when requested by the sender of a message when opening a received message.
I consider this an invasion of privacy. A minor one but an invasion of privacy nevertheless.
Via the Terminal, you can have Mail "request" a read receipt for all sent messages but this will work only if the recipient's email client supports this and the recipient enables the option.

  • Read receipt on mail

Anyone know how to include a read receipt tag on a Mail Email?  The program doesn't seem to have that feature.

Check "Generate 'Read Receipts' in Mail.app".

Not sure if it works in Mountain Lion.
Note that those only work if your recipients have allowed it to happen.
Also, Mail will not respond to them at all.

delivery and read receipts from mail - how do i do it? i used to do this on pc from outlook..... just new at this stuff... thanks

Hmm, had a bit of a look round but it doesn't look like it's particularly straightforward, esp if you want to turn it on or off on a per mail basis:

how do I get the read-receipt of mail

You don't. Mail doesn't support read receipts.
You can add them to every email you send by editing the default headers:
    http://email.about.com/od/macosxmailtips/qt/et_request_recp.htm
Note that is an all or nothing modification. You can pick which messages send read receipt requests.
You can always just ask in the body of the email for the recipient to please respond as their activities are very important for you to monitor.

  • TS3276 How do I request Read Receipts in Mail?

Other mail programmes like Thunderbird allow me to request a read receipt so that I know the email has been received and read. I connot find this useful function in Apple's Mail. Am I just missing it?

There's every likelihood that your recipients' email clients are configured to ignore receipt requests, though. There's nothing you can do on your end to guarantee that your recipients will even see the requests, much less respond to them.

  • Read Receipt in Mail

Is there a way of having a read receipt on the email i send out?
    Rob

I wouldn't take it with a grain of salt. I would, however, do more testing. Here is what I came up with.
I sent out two more test messages to the same five emails. Those emails were a veriety of email types accessed from a variety of modalities. Some of the emails were sent to mail on a private hosts like 1and1, some were sent to gmail accounts, and some were sent to @me.com accounts. The two messages we sent were one HTML email and one plain text email.
In all cases, where we sent plain text emails, no tracking was accomplished.
In all cases where HTML messages were sent, tracking was accomplished regardless of client, local or web, or account type. The tracking was genuine and in fact tracked true opens and not just server downloads. In fact the tracking was so fine-tuned, we could track how many times a particular account opened that particular message... in real time.
So, it is either something clever embedded in the HTML, or it is a picture being counted by the server as somebody else mentioned. But, how would the server know what email account is pinging the picture file? I would love for it to be something in the code of the message itself. If that's the case - that a script in the message itself it sending a 'read' tag or something back to some other component, regardless of client - that means we could set up the same thing without using HTML... maybe? Any thoughts? Should I post the script of a message here?
I know people are very particular about their privacy, but to answer to that: 1) let's all get over the idea that anything we do online, ever, is private - especially email, and 2) I'm at a school where we're dealing with students with particularly bad habits. Being able to say to them, "Well, Stewart, I see that you did in fact read the email. Actually, you looked at it three times. So, I know you knew about the work." will put to bed that excuse real quick and help them succeed more often more efficiently.

  • Read receipt of mails sent

How to mark a mail being sent to record a "read receipt" by the addressee. i.e.Return Confirmation of the addressee having read the mail sent.

Firefox has no email features. Any email accessed through Firefox will be a web mail based service, and any email features will be part of the web mail service. You need to check with the support for the email service that you are using to see if they have this feature.

  • Read Receipts

Read Receipts - I see the string that is required to be cut and pasted into Terminal that enables the request for read receipts in Mail. My question is exactly how do you do that?

    Here it is:
    defaults write com.apple.mail UserHeaders '{"Disposition-Notification-To" = "[email protected]"; }'
