Read this for all having problem setting up Routers with Broadband Modems

I have used Netgear and Linksys for years now, but hadn't setup a new router for a while. Hence, struggled installing a new Airport Extreme to replace my Linksys Router which was not providing enough signal strength for my Mac Mini based iTunes database to stream to my Apple TV wirelessly. Here is what I did finally to resolve the issue:
My setup: Arris TM502G broadband modem provided by Comcast
1. I kept the old router powered up and removed the WAN connection from it and connected it to the AE.
2. After I installed the Airport Utility, I powered up the AE and let it go thru the installation process and allowed it to pick up the settings from the old router. This step is simple and can be done manually.
3. After that the struggle began as "Renew DHCP" wouldn't get me a valid 71.xxx.xxx.xxx series IP address from the Modem. I read all the posts (and felt the same pain as others). Saw very helpful posts with good intention to help others like "remove the power", "remove the battery from the modem", "let it sit without power for 24hrs", etc.. I couldn't use some of these suggestions as my house will be without an internet connection for a long time.
4. Finally, I pressed the "Reset" switch behind the modem for a few seconds until all but the power indicator had turned off indicating a reset. Once it came up and all the LEDs were lit, a few seconds later the LED on the AE turned solid Green indicating success. Looked at the Airport Utility and indeed it had got the new IP address.
There are not too many broadband modem manufacturers and so it shouldn't be too difficult to publish the installation procedure under FAQ on Apple support website for all the modems that Apple's test team has tested with. It could save a lot of grief. Even for a geek like me, I had to burn the midnight oil.
PS: My Apple TV is now streaming the movies/tv shows/home videos from my Mac Mini smoothly. That was the reason I purchased this expensive router. And I found the "guest access" feature which I wasn't aware of. Excellent feature to let my son's friends hook up their laptops during a study/school project session without letting them access our other home computers.

do you mean to see that the XP machine is working as a VPN server ?? if yes then you need not require to forward ports on the router...the laptop should be able to connect to the VPN server remotely ..
if not , then connect the VPN server directly to the modem and check whether you can connect to the VPN server remotely from the router ..

What I believe to be a fix for all the problems as of late with the mini.

Now I have been swarm with the same problems as everyone else with the not registering in itunes so you can download new songs into it. I have tried all the different methods to try and get it to work again but to no avail. I was acut get disgusted with this heap of useless metal until I came across this site. Now I don't know if anyone else posted this site here but I'm doing it just so this $200+ investment doesn’t' become useless or so you don’t have to waste your money on buying a nano(girlfriend bought me a nano for Christmas cause both her and me were having problems with our minis and I told her to bring it back. There was no way I was going to give apple more money cause the mini stop working after a year of me receiving last xmas from my girlfriend. I tried it and it work. I'm finally using my iPod again cause I can acut put songs back into it. iTunes is useless now so I chucked it. All you do is after the iPod is registered by windows as a letter drive just open up this program and just drop the songs you want into. Not sure how long the trial version last but if it continues to work I'll buy it. Just trying to help out fellow frustrated mini owners. Sorry if this is a repost. Thanks. Later.

We've reached out to the Hotmail team and they've determined that this is a bug in their code. (It was masked by a timing issue in 3.5 that was fixed in 3.6.) We've worked with them to develop a fix but they may not have deployed it yet.

I am having problems setting up iCloud with Outlook 2007.

I was able to setup the email with Outlook, but every time I try to setup the contacts. I get the following error:
your setup could not be started because of unexpected error
This error does not occur immediately, but occurs after several steps of downloading and uploading.
If I hit the report button, it hangs. So I hit cancel after that in my retries. I am on Windows 2007 (32-bit).

You need to leave more information like what is the ios5 device. I following instructions accidently set up two iclouds and then I couldn't get the contacts in. My mobileme email isn't going to work anymore because I set up an icloud using my store apple ID. Apparently the term apple ID can refer to any apple product ID that you make up not the one you use in the store. So you need to leave more infor on what is your problem to figure out how to help.

1. Is the syntax right for specifying a file directory as codebase?
-Djava.rmi.server.codebase=file:/c:\public_html\classes/
2. What does this hostname property imply? Does this mean that the program which is started can be accesed by xyz.com?

Having trouble setting up router with verizon modem

im trying to set up my linksys router wrt54gs with my verizon dsl modemr. im having a hard time.

Try these steps :
Access the setup page of the router by launching an
Browser and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When
it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field
empty and provide password as "admin" (Without quotes)
click on ok.
On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be
on ""Obtain IP Automatically - DHCP “. Click on the Save Settings
button.
Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone"".
- Click on enable
Click Clone & click save settings
Check WAN Ip on Status page of router ....
If getting Valid Ip .... try going online
If you are getting Ip - 192.168.1.X ...change the LAN Ip to 192.168.2.1 ....Power cycle for 3-4 minutes ...
Try going online
If still not working ...use Internet Connection type as PPPOE .... Use Username & Password provided by Service Provider ....
Click save settings....
Look for WAN IP address again under status page ....

I am having problems setting up my ntlworld email on my new ipad 2. It works ok on my iphone 3. Trying to use the same settings as my iphone but its not setting up.

1. Turn on Settings > Airplane Mode.
2. Open Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
3. Tap Add Account….
4. From list choose Other.
5. Choose Add Mail Account.
6. In the New Account screen enter customer’s:
          Name (e.g. Johnny Appleseed)
          Email (full email address, e.g. [email protected])
          Password (password for email address)
          Description (this will automatically get filled in, but you can put something more meaningful e.g. ‘NTLWorld Email’)
7. Tap Next.
8. In the next screen ensure IMAP is selected.
9. Enter the following settings:
          Incoming Mail Server (section)
          Host Name imap.virginmedia.com

21. Tap Account to go back one screen.
22. Tap Done.
23. You will get an error that the IMAP server is not responding; just tap OK.

25. You will get an error that the account may no be able to send or receive emails; tap Save anyway.
26. Tap Mail… to go back one screen.
27. Tap Settings to go back one screen.
28. Turn Airplane Mode to OFF.
29. Press Home button and open Mail app to check it is now collecting and sending email.

Having problems setting up iMessage

I'm having problems setting up iMessage on my iPod Touch. I have several iphones and they all were configured out problems. But I'm having difficulty getting this to work on an iPod touch.
The iPod touch has been upgraded to the latest iOS 5.01 from iOS 5.0 and I still have problems...
I have a valid iCloud account
iCloud is setup and working fine on this iPod touch
I've shut-down and restarted the iPod touch
I've done a hard-reset
Wifi is setup properly...
Here's the issue:
I open iMessage (either through the Messages app, or via Settings/Messages
I'm asked to enter the Apple ID. So I enter my Apple ID and password
I click "Sign In"
The app moves to the next screen - "People will message you using your email address. What email address would you like to use?". I enter the same gmail address I'm using for my Apple ID
I click the Next button and it scrolls back to the original "Enter Apple ID" sign in screen in Step#2. No error message appears.
So I don't really know what to try next..

OK - solved my own issue finally.
The answer was buried in another thread within a reply from user fdm1979.
The time on this particular iPod was wrong...just flip the Date/Time to "Set Automatically", and then suddently imessage and FaceTime started working.

COA Numbers invalid - read this for more news

hello all,
I've got news for everyone having problems with the vista upgrade,today (tuesday 6th feb 07) I finally got through to moduslink and the reason for coa numbers is because preinstalled software coa numbers will not be verified by microsoft.
I rang microsoft and they have confirmed this and said I should get in touch with my pc supplier (toshiba)so once again the customer is treated like a second class citizen pushed from pillar to post while the people supposed to help do nothing but supply you with a phone number which either does not work or you get sent elsewhere.
I suggest everyone starts to call toshiba customet services to get this matter resolved because as I see it when the offer finishes we will get told "tough not our problem" even everyone is tearing their hair out trying to get something done.

Sorry to hear that you have these problems but honestly I really dont understand what happen exactly. If you check Moduslink site carefully you can find page with screenshots and exact explanation where you can find COA number on Microsoft sticker.
Last week I have ordered Vista upgrade for Satellite A100 and COA number (14 numbers) is verified without any problem.
Have you maybe used Check existing order option for three times and the COA number is locked or is there any other problem when you tried to make step-by-step order?

Having problems setting text to a JLabel!!

i'm having problems setting text to a JLabel.
i have a JFrame with a JPanels and on the JPanel i have a JLabel.
I have a text field wihich is used to input text.
So, i'm using textField.getText() to read the text of the text field and setText() to write it to the Label.
but setText() isn't displaying the text on the label.
I'm using NetBeans as an ide

You said, "the 4 also has signal and wifi whereas the 5 has only wifi". By "signal", I'm assuing that you mean cellular signal. If so, that means your iPhone 4 is still active on your cellular number and your iPhone 5 is not. Contact your carrier to sort out which phone is active on your account.

I Sugges you to log into your hotmail acc and go to security and password change bit, then you will see two-step verification.. turn that off and you will be able to set it up on your iPhone/iPad or even Mac.
Give your phone a restart before trying to set it up. Thanks
