If you can no longer hear callers, cannot hear your voicemail, and are tearing your hair out trying to get any help from the obvious sources (your service provider, Nokia, your local store) - do not panic.
Call 121, as if you are making a vm call. While it is connecting, adjust the volume control button on the right of the phone. You will find that this volume control button operates on a 1-10 scale and is completely different from the one that is normally adjustable from the main screen, which operates on a 1-30 scale. Hopefully you will start to hear the recorded voice and all will be well.
This is not mentioned anywhere in the handbook or any of the online resources. I eventually found a clue via a different help site - but couldn't find where the 2nd volume control was. Thank goodness I eventually stumbled upon it by accident.
I know I am not the only one to have lost connection with a caller half-way through a conversation. It must be a design fault of some sort. I am just relieved that I did not follow the Nokia diagnostics advice to reset my phone to factory settings (after backing up etc etc), or pay out vast ££s for the privilege of sending off my phone for a non-existent repair.
I am not techy - but I am posting this in the hope that it will save others the frustration, expense and time I have wasted over the past 3 days trying to get any sense out of Vodafone and Nokia. (I am sorry if that breaches some form of discussion board protocol - but it is a fact.)
If anyone from Nokia is reading this will you PLEASE update your handbooks to include this information, and take account of it within your online diagnostics page, which told me to restore factory settings. (Fortunately I have no idea how to backup data on my phone, and the advice didn't tell me either.)
If anyone from Vodafone is reading this, will you PLEASE train your sales staff and helpdesk staff to understand this problem.
Feeling calmer now ... off to make a large mug of coffee.

Add your outgoing Server Port Number to your "Outgoing Mail Server Name"
Example: smtp.example.com:XXXX
where XXXX is your Outgoing Server Port Number ( eg. 25 )

From the Home Screen, select:
Settings
*Mail,Contacts ...*
your email Account ex: [email protected]
Scroll down to Outgoing Mail Server
Then select your outgoing mail server *SMTP smtp.example.com*
Select Primary Server smtp.example.com
Host Name change smtp.example.com to smtp.example.com:XXXX
where XXXX is your Outgoing Server Port Number.
This worked great, but unfortunately this helpful hint could not be found on the Apple support forum ... until now

This worked for me too! (iPhone 3G 2.02). Apple's once-over-lightly help with this issue is really lame. I thought better of Apple but they are turning into just another Dell or Microsoft.

7373 - I Can't hear callers

I can't hear callers on my 7373 but they can hear me. There is a yellow line on the top of the handset, in the shape of a thunderbolt, when this happens. I have taken this into my Nokia Centre and they have no idea about this. They installed the latest software on the phone and still no luck! Any ideas? Thanks

its better you yourself get in touch with nokia care.many a times they promise to ring you back or get in touch with you but they dont since already they have so many problems to deal with.since its more important for you to get your phone right,get after them like a child gets after his mother in a candy shop and make it done.

Is there no sound period? I mean nothing through the headphones or the speaker? If the sound works only through the speaker or just through the headphones the switch inside the headphone port maybe stuck open. Try plugging and unplugging 10 to 12 times to unstick it. If no sound at all, go into Settings>Music>Volume Limit. See if it is turned on, if so check that the limit is not turned down to zero. If still not the problem try a soft reset, press and hold the power and home buttons together until the Apple logo appears, about 15 seconds, then release. if still no joy go into Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. If still no joy, connect to iTunes via the cable and Restore to backup. If that doesn't work Restore to new. Just remember to save all your stuff that can be wiped before you restore, pictures, music, contacts etc. If none of this works, then maybe a hardware issue contact Apple Genius Bar or store and have your iPod evaluated. Problem with 6234. Can't hear callers.

My wife has a problem with her Nokia 6234. An icon that looks like earphones with an arrow pointing downwards appears at the top of the screen. When this happens, she can't hear any of her callers.
Any help you might be able to give us would be greatly appreciated.

looks like software malfunction. if the icon of headfones apears without the deadfones connected, maybe it's a software trouble. take it to nokia care centre (if available) and see what they say.
did you try to restart yuor cell? try it maybe it get fixed...

Samsung u370 - can't hear callers and they can't hear me. I've tried changing TTY setttings (it started in the off position), this lets me hear callers but not the other way or them hear me but not the other way. Anything to try to fix would be appreciated.

Hi darrenk. I know making sure people can hear you and that you can hear other people is very important. Are you still having this trouble?
Since you mentioned adjusting the TTY setting does help with part of the audio, a reset may be the best way to ensure we can get you a working phone quickly. This will erase all user data and restore the handset to the original factory settings.
1. From the main screen, touch Menu.
2. Touch Settings & Tools.
3. Touch Phone Settings.
4. Touch Security. (If prompted, touch OK.)
5. Enter the Security Code (default is the last 4 digits of the phone number).
6. Touch Restore Phone.
7. Touch Yes.
8. Touch OK.
9. Enter the Security Code (default is the last 4 digits of the phone number).
Before resetting your phone, please run Backup Assistant http://bit.ly/xviUI8 to back up your contacts, and also save all your pictures to your memory card.

I read that it is not on Snow Leopard only on Leopard....so do I need to get only Leopard? Can u advise?

I can hear you, but you can't hear me...

I've had my iPhone for about 2 weeks now. For the first 3-4 days it was working fine and dandy. And then last weekend a strange thing has settled in. I'll be talking with someone on the phone and then mid-conversation, they can't hear me anymore. I hear them just fine. And when I end the call and then call them back, they can't hear me. And if I try calling anyone else, they can't hear me either. And if anyone calls me, they can't hear me either. In all cases I hear them clear as a bell. Help?!?
Other maybe relevant info: phone seems to be getting warm when I'm talking on the phone. I have used the iPod function with other headphones beyond the iPhone headphones. This weird they-can't-hear-me-thing happens intermittently and then resolves itself a while later (sometimes 10 mins sometimes 2 hours) with me doing absolutely nothing. :::shrug:::

Have you tried the basics from the manual?

try exiting the app and double clicking the home button. the multitasking apps will show up. delete all of them by holding them down and pushing the red circle (dont worry that doesnt remove them from the phone, just completely closes the app and makes your device run faster) then power off your phone by holding down thw lock button and sliding the red arrow when it comes up. wait about 5 seconds after its completely off and turn it back on. then try using the mic. hope this helps

Yeah, this seems to be something to do with Google, not your iPhone. A search on that error found this page:
