Read TM backup in Linux?

I am almost ready to migrate my work over to my new iMac. I am so far a Linux user (SUSE 10.0). I haven't gotten NFS to mount, but I did find I can share USB drives formatted with hfsplus.
I am a bit paranoid, though, and behind on many deadlines. Since I have only one Mac and a slew of Linux boxes, I want to cover myself if the new Mac takes a dump.
My original plan was to use rsback which has served me well for years, but thought I would give TM a try.
I now have a TM backup of my Mac, and I can see the directory structure on my Linux box, but can't find the files!
Is there a way to recover files from a time machine backup under Linux?
TIA

Thanks. Curiously after neglecting the problem, my NFS just started working. Maybe started after I shutdown and restarted to add memory.
I think I will use rsback as I have done for years. Great, efficient, simple product. Also, I think I can backup to a network drive. Fi so, that means I could backup my home computer to a USB drive in my office, and my office computer to a USB drive at home.
Might use TM on a local drive for redundancy and to take advantage of its coolness.
Again, thanks.

My iMac suddenly can't read the backup hard drive I've been using for Time Machine.  I tried unplugging the cord that connects the HD to the iMac and plugging it back in, but I still get "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" below which are buttons for Initialize, Ignore and Eject.  I was using a cord that went from larger square plug to larger square plug.  So then I tried one that went from smaller square plug to what I think is USB (thin rectangular plug) of the sort that connects the keyboard and mouse. It's the type that my printers and scanners use to connect to the iMac.  I did NOT just upgrade the OS or anything.  The external HD is an OWC Mercury Elite All Pro. Thanks, Michael!  I do hear it at times spooling up and running. Just after I bumped the thread I looked for troubleshooting for this drive online and found the manual which suggested using Disk Utility which I've seen before accidentally (if I hit Command Shift U instead of Shift U to type "Unit" on a new folder for a student's homework ) but had never really noticed.   Disk Utility does see it and also a sub-something (directory?) which might be the Time Machine archives on the disk, called disk1s2), sort of the way that my iMac's hard drive shows up as 640.14 GB Nitachi HDT7... and has a sub-something titled DB iMac, which is what I named my iMac's hard drive.
Anyway the owner's manual just shows the image under the formatting section, not the troubleshooting section, but as soon as I saw it in the manual I remembered seeing it accidentally a few times, went to it, and am now verifying the disk.  Right now it's telling me that it will take 2 hours to complete the verification, so I guess I have a bigt of a wait.  :-)
Does that fact that Disk Utilities can see it mean it's not failed, or just that it hasn't completely failed?
I can see the virtue in having multiple redundant backups, or at least two backups. What do you suggest?  Two external hard drives?  I had this one linked by ethernet, and but I also have a cord that could link it by USB (like a printer), so if this one is reparable I could get a second one and link it by USB.  If this one is not reparable I could get two and do the same thing.  I do have an Airport so I suppose it's possible to get some sort of Wi-Fi hard drive (my new printer/scanner uses only the network and not a cable, although it has a cable that I used for the initial installation), but I'd suspect a Wi-Fi hard drive might have a higher price.
What hard drives, if any, do you recommend? I seem to recall that when I was looking at external hard drives 4 years ago, Apple's were substantially more expensive, which is why I got the OWC Mercury Elite All Pro.

  • HT3275 I'm receiving an error message that reads "The backup disk image '/Volumes/Data/my name's iMAC.sparesebundle" is already in use.  The time capsule is not backing up any files.

The Time Machine is not completing thte backup to my Time Capsule.  I am receiving a message which reads "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Mac Jet's iMAC.sparsebundle" is already in use."  I cannot locate the source of the problem or what steps need to be taken to get the Time Capsule operating.

Hi, see if it shows here...
In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...

Ah, that's a new wrinkle to me.  I haven't tested the Server product, but there are a number of differences.  As far as I can tell, the firmware update solved this for most, but not all, users of standard OSX.
Are you still on Snow Leopard server?  It's quite different from later versions, I understand.
Have you tried selecting the base station, then Base Station > Restart via Aiport Utility's menubar?  That still disconnects everyone, but might work by itself.
Otherwise, sorry, but I'm out of my comfort zone.
Hopefully one of the networking gurus will have an idea or two.

  • "Windows Backup cannot read the backup destination" when trying to backup to Backup Once to Samba share on NAS

    Environment:
Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials running in VirtualBox in a Windows 7 host. Networking is configured and works fine.
    Background:
My only backup needs are to copy the contents of two folders to a NAS folder every day at 2 AM.
I configured a backup schedule in Windows Server Backup (wbadmin) to a network location which is hosted as a Samba share on a Synology NAS.
For authentication, I created a backup user which has the same username and password as a user on the Samba share, with permission to read and write the backup folder. I added this user to the Backup Operators group.
    Problem:
When I try to run the Backup Once operation to test my backup, I get the following error message:
"Windows Backup cannot read the backup destination."
    What I've tried:
I verified that the location is directly accessible in Windows by copying and pasting the address from the Windows Server Backup destination into explorer. Providing the backup user credentials opened the location and creating/reading files worked fine.
Adding the backup user to the Administrators group did not have an effect.
    Update 2014-02-18
I checked the backup destination and was surprised to find that the scheduled backup actually completes successfully.
However, Backup Once always results in the above error message.
So the problem is confined to the "Backup Once" operation.

  • How to backup a Linux server over ssh using Leopard?

I have a server running Linux, and my main machine is a Macbook running Leopard. I want to back up the entire root directory (including subdirectories) of the Linux server to an external HDD attached to Macbook.
My initial thought was to mount the Linux server's root directory on Leopard using sshfs, and then use RSyncX to backup that mounted directory on external HDD attached to Leopard. Unfortunately sshfs mounted directories are not treated as "drives" by RsyncX (and a lot of other apps).
    Can someone help? Thanks!

I am currently in the process of setting up a small form factor pc running a linux distro as my router/firewall and will be looking for a backup system on my network which is mostly mac based.
I just googled 'timemachine for linux' and got a few good results.
    http://handsonhowto.com/2007/timemachine4linux/
and also a tool call flyback
You could also try setting up your backup drive as an NFS sharepoint.
    http://macresearch.org/nfs-exports-leopard
I know my post does not answer your issue directly but flyback is the solution I am going to try.

  • Data Federator automatic backup in linux

    Hello experts,
I've been doing my DF backups with backuptoolcon.sh, but it's interactive and doesn't have an option to pass the parameters. In other words, cannot be included in an automatic script. Have anyone found a way to make the backup automatic by using this same tool or any other way?
    Regards,
    Víctor Ramírez

    Hi,
I have automated my data federator backup in Windows system, as you mentioned you are using UNIX platform, do the below change in the last line of backuptoolcon.sh to automate.
    restartServers silent <user_id> <pwd> backup "/<path>"
If its worked, please post your backuptoolcon.sh that will be helpfull for others.
    Regards,
    Luckshmanan.

  • How can I use Migration Assistant to read a backup stored in a folder on an external drive?

My MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion) died on me. I removed the hard drive and copied all the folders under my /User/stewart to an external hard drive.
I have an IMac which has just been upgraded to Mavericks. I want to transfer some of the data from my MacBook Pro to the iMac. I want to transfer my email from the MacBook Pro to the iMac, including:
    - All stored emails
    - All account settings
I assumed that migration assistant could do this for me. But when I tried to use it, there was no option to read from a disk that wasn't a Time Machine backup or a startup disk.
Is there any way I can move just the email onto teh Mavericks machine.
The Macbook Pro is just about to be shipped off for repair. I could get the disk out of it again and then run Migration Assistant with it. It would be very time consuming as I don't have it with me at the moment.
So I am hoping someone can help me with a quicker way.
    Many thanks in advance.

Migration Assistant will recover data from a system disk or a Time Machine backup.
Since you moved the files yourself to the external drive, you are going to have to move what you have back yourself.
The files for email are stored in ~/Library/Mail. Since you did not copy them to the external, your emails are now lost.
The same goes for your account settings.
    Allan

  • Mail backup to linux server?

Where does the mail program store its files? I want to set up a cron job or something which will copy all my mail to my Gentoo linux server just for safe keeping.
    Has anyone else tried this?
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hello jcataldo, welcome to the discussions.
You find most of the files and accounts in:/Users/your_username/Library/Mail
And mail application preferences file is at:/Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    Hope this helps.

  • Adobe Reader 8.1.2 (linux) hang at startup

We have a number of users who have reported hangs when trying to start Adobe Reader on our CentOS 4.5 linux workstations (CentOS 4.5 is a RedHat Enterprise Linux 4.5 rebuild). When this occurs, the X-server is locked for a minimum of 10 seconds, sometimes longer, until the Reader window finally comes up.
I was able to duplicate this behavior on my desktop workstation; of course, once I tried to run the program through strace I no longer saw this behavior.
Have any other users here seen this behavior? Any idea what is causing it, or is there a workaround to mitigate the problem?
    John Perkins

I was finally able to get an strace of a delayed acroread startup with the Xming xserver (displaying on Windows). I can't use XManager or Exceed (or similar products) when trying to display on a linux desktop.
The strace output I've collected suggests Adobe Reader is trying to
stat() all the font files available at startup time. We run with an AFS filesystem here, and some fonts are in AFS...so those fonts get cached on local disk when Adobe Reader first runs, and stat()'ing the font files goes much faster the next time around.
It may be necessary for us to move these font files to the local disk at some point to improve performance with Adobe Reader, and maybe with other apps.
Some detail as to how fonts are found could be helpful...does Reader try to generate a list of paths from the X-server somehow? Or does it find font paths some other way?
    John

  • Adobe Reader 9.3 for Linux: Segmentation Fault in PPKLite.api

Adobe Reader 9.3 cannot open signed pdf files on our system (64-bit Fedora 10 Linux, with 32-bit compatibility libraries installed). It crashes with a segmentation fault any time one tries to open the following file:
    http://www.utoronto.ca/ic/software/forms/matlab_concurrent_renewal2010.pdf
Running with ACRODEBUG=1 and ACRO_CRASHLOG=1 results in a zero-length crash log file and the only debug messages shown are
    Loading PlugIn /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Reader/intellinux/plug_ins/Annots.api ... [dlopen success for Annots.api, handle = 0xc4548f8]
    Loading PlugIn /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Reader/intellinux/plug_ins/AcroForm.api ... [dlopen success for AcroForm.api, handle = 0xd0c3a50]
    Loading PlugIn /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Reader/intellinux/plug_ins/DigSig.api ... [dlopen success for DigSig.api, handle = 0xd0dcc68]
    Loading PlugIn /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Reader/intellinux/plug_ins/EScript.api ... [dlopen success for EScript.api, handle = 0xd126ac8]
    Loading PlugIn /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Reader/intellinux/plug_ins/PPKLite.api ... [dlopen success for PPKLite.api, handle = 0xd7b1ff0]
If I run the gdb debugger on /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Reader/intellinux/bin/acroread, it shows the segmentation fault occurring inside /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Reader/intellinux/plug_ins/PPKLite.api (but since the file is stripped, all it shows is the binary offset of the segfault). I do have a coredump, though.
If I remove the PPKLite.api file (or rename it to PPKLite.api.hide -- note that chmod -x does not work, nor does renaming it to something else that still ends in .api, unlike some workarounds I've seen on the web for similar problems in earlier versions of Adobe Reader), then Adobe Reader can open the file without crashing, except that without PPKLite it cannot validate its signature and so it displays the message "This document enabled extended features in Adobe Reader. The document has been changed since it was created and use of extended features is no longer available. Please contact the author for the original version of this document" -- which I assume is because the signature validation failed due to the absence of PPKLite so it things the document has been altered even though it hasn't been.
So this removing or renaming of PPKLite.api works around the problem of the crash, at the expense of getting this misleading warning message.
However, obviously there is a problem inside PPKLite.api that needs to be fixed....

I'm seeing what must be the same issue: acroread foo.pdf exits almost instantly without any message, but with status 1.
This is: AdobeReader_enu-9.3.1-1.i486 on a Fedora 12 box,  AMD Phenom II 945.
If I set ACRODEBUG=1 and ACRO_CRASHLOG=1 and ulimit -c unlimited, and rename PPKLite.api,  *then* I get a nonzero crashlog. Which is:

  • How can I read pdf files in linux?

I know the pdf files can be read by Adodb acrobat, but i can not find the software for linux,How can I download the similar tools ?
    Thanks for advance.

You can download AcrobatReader fro Linux from adobe.com like the versions of rother OS'es.
however if you want a nicer UI than Acrobat consider using gv with ghostscript. They might already be installed on your system, since they are part of most Linux distributions.
It's worthwhile to upgrade Ghostscript to the most recent version, othervise you will be unable to read pdf files that utilizes the newest fads from Adobe.
