Read XMP/IPTC data

Hello all-
I am reading data out of a JPEG. Specifically the EXIF and
IPTC data. One of the fields I want is iptc.intellectualGenre.
Unfortunately- I cannot get to that with the
imageGetIPTCMetadata(thispic) function. That field just seems to be
missing. But according to the IPTC people, it is part of their
core.
Okay, now step two...using an outside program, (PIE) I can
see that it pushes Intellectual Genre to the XMD section. Alas, I
cannot read XMD at all.
Is there a fairly simple way to read XMD, or just the
IPTC.IntellectualGenre?
Thanks-
Karl
(oh, and going to the Adobe XMD Dev site has not helped me at
all...)

dumb question but is that data in the image? i just tested
against
http://www.drewnoakes.com/code/exif/sampleOutput.html
& cf produces the same
output as that lib (it should as cf's EXIT & IPTC
metadata is based on his java
lib).
also when did this tag & the "core" bits get released?
after that lib?
btw the EXIF data differed in tag names (the GPS bits
mainly).

  • Which date data - EXIF, XMP, IPTC - does AP read on import?

I'm importing some film scans and files created from digital cameras into my Aperture library. Most of them already have IPTC matadata added, this would have been done when the scans or JPGs were originally made.
I'm having trouble where the IPTC date and XMP are different. This will be because the IPTC date is the date the image was taken while the XMP date is the date the file was created. Aperture always wants to use the XMP date which is invariably the wrong date!
For example, I have a JPG file which - according to Photoshop's File info - was taken on 30 March 1997. Under the 'Advanced' tab in Photoshop CS5's File info I see:
    photoshop:DateCreated: 1997-04-30
    xmp:CreateDate: 2009-10-07
The xmp:CreatorTool is Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and the xmp MetadataDate and ModifyDate are the same are the CreateDate (which all include the time but I don't think that's relevent here). There is no other date metadata.
So I made this JPG by exporting it from Lightroom on 07 October 2009. Now when I import it to Aperture the IPTC Date Created is show as 07/10/2009, not 30/04/1997.
So Aperture is treating the file creation date (xmp:CreateDate) as the date the image was made? Which, to my mind, is wrong unless you only ever have digital camera files in your library. Or Lightroom was wrong to write the xmp:CreateDate as the date the file was created? But being as Adobe control this XMP space...
    What do you think?

I have just purchased MetaData Browser, an iPad/iPhone app which allows me to see the metadata actually copied to device. Most all of the data is there EXCEPT the photo's File Name, Version Name, Caption and a few other IPTC fields. This additional data is on the original picture stored in my Aperture library on my MacBook. Why would these fields be excluded in the transfer process? Guess I'll have to take this up with Apple directly. Of course, even with this data included, Apple's Photos app does not recognize ANY of the metadata or make it available to the user in any form.

  • AME hangs at "Reading XMP Data" and won't start encoding

    System:
    Mac OSX 10.8.5
    2 x 3.06 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    64 GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
    Premiere 7.2.1 (4)
    AME 7.2.0.43
I've created short videos, usually 4 to 12 minutes in length.  Edited from Sony XDCAM EX video at 720p60.
I export 5 of these videos to AME using the h.264 codec to try to create mp4 files and cueue them in AME.
Once they are in the Queue of AME, I hit start.  AME shows the progress at the bottom and says it is Reading XMP data, but it
then never progresses to the encoding process.  I just keep seeing that yellow and grey barber pole progress bar moving, but nothing
    ever happens.
I've used this process for months with no problems and now it won't work.  My coworkers and I have the same setup and we are each
haveing nothing but problems ever since Premiere and AME went past 7.0.
I saw it mentioned in another question to uncheck "Enable native Premiere Pro sequence import".  I tried that yesterday and it worked.
    Today it does not.
Please help, this is getting rediculous the amount of problems we are suddenly having with Adobe products and a maxed out Mac machine.

After poking around the internets and reading this thread and others, I did the following.  I am not sure WHICH of these steps lead to it working, so I will list all.
    - Deleted all contents of "media cache" and "media cache files" directories.  I tried hitting the "clean" button (in PPro prefs), but after waiting 5 minutes and the progress bar only getting to like 10%, I just hit "cancel" and deleted the files myself, brute force.  Took all of 45 seconds.  Then, for good measure, I hit the "clean" button again, and it finished in seconds.  I did this for both PPro and AME, and both had identical media settings.
    - Restarted AME and trashed prefs (holding "shift" while booting).  Because of hitting this error before, I already had "Enable Native PPro import" checkmark ticked.  When I trashed prefs, if went back on.  For fun, I left it on.
    - Searched project drive with my media on it for all ".CFA" files on it (because my media settings generates them next to source media when possible).  I deleted.
    - Restarted computer.
    - Opened Premiere. Opened project.  Let it reconnect all media and re-generate all CFA files.  When everything was silent (took about 30 mins) I exported to Queue.  Before I had experimented with using audio render files.  I left that box off this time.
    - Used the "metadata" settings in the export queue to NOT have it transfer ANY metadata from the project to the rendered file.
    - Queue took a long time to get started, but eventually it worked.
It should be noted that I am dealing with a large project (5,000 RED clips, 10,000 audio files) where almost every clip is a merged clip.  There's maybe 10 tracks of audio in every timeline and the final thing was an assembly sequence made up of 10 nested sequences.  So... not simple.
My gut is that this is a problem with the audio.  I don't know why, but I think it is.  My next try was going to be just exporting video, no audio, and then running audio through ProTools via a OMF.

  • IPTC data, keywords and captions

I used lightroom 4 for all my tagging/labelling and uploading work at sporting events.
It has always worked flawlessly and I was very happy with it, however, I just had to reset my laptop due to a harddrive failure so have had to download Lightroom 5 instead.
I cannot seem to get the IPTC template to attach to the files when I import them.
I usually setup a preset for the game I am at with some general keywords but most importantly the IPTC data for copyright and payment purposes.
Today I was not able to get this data to copy to any of the imported files at all and had to do it all manually which is extremely frustrating and time consuming.
To get the template into lightroom in the first place I used to save the .xmp file in a new folder.  Then I would copy a jpeg image into that same folder and name them the same file.  Then when I import the jpeg into lightroom I could see all the IPTC data and create a new template for each game/event from that.
    Can anyone advise please?!

    Hi Pete,
    Thanks for the email.
Yeah I created the same template I would have done in lightroom 4. I usually save it and then apply it automatically to all images upon import but it simply wasn't attaching anything to them.
I even tried syncing it across from other photos and it wouldn't copy.
Do you have any suggestions or even a guide on how to make the iptc template from scratch?!
I'm not shooting this weekend because I don't have it sorted yet but have a rugby match next weekend and the north east derby (Newcastle vs Sunderland) so need to sort it by then or I'll need to get photomechanic which I don't want to do!
    Thanks

  • Is there a way to edit IPTC data of an image with AppleScript?

    Hi,
I'm looking for a way to batch-edit the IPTC data from images. Is that somehow possible with Applescript? If so, could someone point me to a direction?
(I fond a script working wit Graphic Converter in another thread, but that didn't work.)
    Thanks,
    p.

Frank, maybe you could give me a hand here. I'm building the basic script cycling through the dropped files. But I don't know how to best implement the terminal command.
In each cycle, I would set the file path as a variable and then compose the terminal command in order to execute it with "do script".
But  "set x to path of eachFile" doesn't work: <<class ppth>> of alias "(path shows here)" could not be read. Any ideas how to do that better?
    on open theFiles
      repeat with eachFile in theFiles
set x to path of eachFile
                        tell application "Terminal"
                         activate
do script "hello" (Exiftool command will be here)
                        close window 1
                        end tell
              end repeat
    end open

  • Problems reading .xmp sidecar files after moving .nefs in bridge CS6

Problem with CS6 beta.  Whenever I move a set of edited (using LR4 with metadata saved to folder) .nef files in bridge to new folder, the .xmp files are not recognised in bridge.  They are thre if you look in Windows explorer.  If I then find the files in LR4 and resave the adjustments, then becomes visible again.  Consistent error on each attempt in different folders.  Move was via Ctrl A + dragging in bridge.  .nefs were form a Nikon D3.

Hi Trevor, thanks for replying.  Yes, as I said moving files directly in bridge.  The standard functionality (since I have been using bridge back in CS2) was to move the .xmp files along with the .nef files (although you only see the .nef files directly in bridge).  When I say not reading .xmp files I mean that none of the adjustments are visible in the target bridge folder, equally the icons you would normally see on the top RHS showing adjustments have been made are no longer visibile (remember that I have cheked using windows explorer that the .xmp files did succesfully migrate to the target folder).  Having been using CS5 bridge on the same machine for several years and have never had this lack of functinonality, therefore I am reporting it as a potential bug in CS6 beta bridge.
I should also confirm that before they were moved, no problems at all in opening the .nef files in camea raw 7.0 and all edits honoured.

  • How to add IPTC data to multiple photos w/o overwriting other data?

I need to see if there's a way to add IPTC data to one or more fields to mulitple photos without disturbing the other fields' data that's already there. For example, I've keyworded & captioned my images, but now would like to add the City or the Country to all the shots, or a group of shots.
Conventional Lift & Stamp will override the keyword & caption field info on the stamped images, which I don't want. How to I lift & stamp other select fields? I sure don't want to have to type in the city or country on hundreds/thousands of images!
    Randy
    Power Mac G5, dual 2.5, 2.5 gb   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Thanks for the reply.
In the Lift & Stamp HUD, under the IPTC heading,
there's no way to de-select the sub-categories of
Caption & Kepyword, leaving just State (or other
fields which don't seem to be even present). One can
de-select the major categories of Keywords, Caption,
IPTC, etc. but not the subcategories. This is the
problem I'm running into -- no way to just add
    additional data in select fields.
    Unless I'm missing something.
Indeed! Aperture does not make this at all obvious, but with any line highlighted in the Lift & Stamp HUD just hit the "delete" key and that line is gone. If you delete a category (line with a checkbox) the whole category goes, if you expand a category you can delete individual lines, whatever you like. Also very handy for adjustment stamping when you don't want to stamp a clone job, just white balance.
It remembers what you have removed until you do another Lift.

  • After editing file in ACR 8.6 (Mac) , the file (NEF and XMP) modification dates are not updated

With both my Mac's, reset Photoshop C  (2014) to previous version 2014.0. Now find that after editing file in ACR 8.6 (Mac) , the file (NEF and XMP) modification dates are not updated. Reloaded camera raw, etc., but still find modification dates are not updated, either using Finder or using Bridge to view dates. Editing other files, PSD, DNG, TIFF, etc., are updated and the information is correctly displayed.

Ok, not entirely sure what I did but it's now working (Bizarre!). The only thing I did was 'eject' the ACR 8.6 .dmg file from the finder side bar and restart PS CC, so that may have been where I was going wrong all along!
However, I now have another issue in that there is no preview of the shot in Finder on my iMac when I highlight the NEF file. I assume this is simply because Apple haven't yet released an update for the new D810 NEF files and so the computer doesn't know what it's looking at?!?
If anyone has any other ideas though, then I'm more than willing to listen.
    Thanks again.

  • IPTC Date Created only imports for October

I'm creating JPEGS with only IPTC and EXIF data in and the field 2:55 Date Created only seems to appear in the File Info / Origin / Date Created in CS4 if the date is set to october??
Manually editing the jpeg file, for example 20081007 works but 20080907 fails, even if I change the remaining EXIF and IPTC date fields to match
I dont suppose anyone has any ideas as this is driving me nuts!
    Thanks
    Derek

No, that changes the Date on the EXIF panel, in my case the date the scans were made. I want that date to stand and the IPTC Date Created date changed.
Probably doesn't matter anyway, since I have just discovered that changes I make in Aperture IPTC metadata cannot be written to the master copy. At least not for TIFF files. Strangely, it does seem to work for jpgs.
Too bad. I liked some Aperture features.

  • Option for IPTC "Date Created" field to be auto-populated?

    Hi,
The date of capture is held within the "Date Time Original" field in the EXIF data; but the IPTC "Date Created" field is blank.
Currently i have to fill this in manually  if i want it populated (which i have to do for a certain customer, for hundreds of differently dated images)  but i would really like a "replicate" button by which i can auto-populate this field; or someother easy workaround that i might be missing here?!?
    thanks,

Hmm, both LR 3.6 and LR 4.0 normally set IPTC:DateCreated to be the same as EXIF:DateTimeOriginal, both on export and when you do Metadata > Save To File.
Perhaps you could post a culprit image here (use the camera icon) to see what might be going on with you.

  • Java application to read XMP.

Would it be possible then to have a Java application reading through the files with XMP embedded and displaying the information?

Hi Ana, sorry I didn't read your reply earlier, maybe it would have been usefull. There is no e-mail notification on this forum. Now I solved my problem with iView MediaPro and AppleScript. iView can read the "caption" data from the XMP of Photoshop 7 created files.
Here's my script (not very beautiful mind you, it's the first AS I ever wrote), the comments are in sweidish my native toungue if anyone wonders. Maybe someone else in my situation will benefit from this...
    tell application "iView MediaPro"
set selectedID to the selection of window 1
set numItems to the number of items in selectedID
-- loopa genom de valda filerna
repeat with i from 1 to numItems
set j to item i of the selectedID
set origPath to the path of object j of window 1
    tell application "iView MediaPro"
    --hämta filens namn
copy the name of object j of window 1 to myFileName
    -- ta bort suffixet ".jpg"
set KollaAntal to count characters of myFileName
set myFileNameB to characters 1 thru (KollaAntal - 4) of myFileName
    -- här hämtar vi "caption"/bildtexten
copy the caption of object j of window 1 to extractedText
    end tell
    -- spara informationen som textfil
set thePath to path to startup disk as string
    set theData to extractedText
set fileRef to (open for access file (thePath & myFileNameB & ".txt") with write permission)
    set eof fileRef to 0
    write theData to fileRef
    close access fileRef
end repeat -- här slutar loopen
    end tell
-- lite user feedback, ingen egentlig betydelse, men "känns bra"
    tell application "Finder"
display dialog "Skriptet har utförts" buttons {"OK"} default button 1 with icon note
    end tell

  • IViewMedia Aperture 2.1 Sync IPTC Data

    Hi, I just have realized,
because of the missing Annoture Update, I have to annotated all pictures in Aperture again.
Now when I played around withe the new “EXIF Update from Master” in AP2.1, maybe it could help.
I just realized, if I sync the data back to the RAW or JPEG files in iVIew, nearly all IPTC will be automaticaly updated in AP2.1 (without clicking Update EXIF from Master).
The only big problem is, the keywords and rest of annotations in AP2.1 don’t merge and will be displaced from the new synced data from iView Media.
The good thing is, the wrong IPTC date code is also displaced from iViewMedia so you will have the right IPTC date in Photoshop and GraphicConverter.
Conclusion: AP2.1. still haven’t a proper/complete IPTC code, be aware by syncing!
P.S. If you just use the new “Update EXIF from Master” command in AP, without sync the data in iView back to the masters, the keywords and other annotations won‘t be touched.

1st Don't panic. I have a 55,000 image database which started acting flakey.
I have some disk tools which anyone should have if working with critical data. Remember the Library is not a single file.. if you look inside it's just a series of folders. You may or may not do what I did depending on the level of safety needed. I'm a wedding photographer and it had to be high since I am working on some pictures.
1: Used "Data Rescue II" to make an image of the 500gig mybook drive to another drive. Attached to the Library and made sure I could see it.
2: Ran Apples Disk Util.. and it couldn't fix
3: Ran Drive Warrior and it fixed the drive tables (original disk)
4: Ran Apples Disk Util.. it worked with no errors
5: Opened Aperture slow but running
I found the last import of pictures had some corrupted pictures. I moved that project to another drive by dragging the project. Then I deleted the project from the library (remember I still have a backup)
6: Opened Aperture and rebuilt the database
    7: Rebuilt the Vault (backup)
8: I am running "iDefrag" now to defrag all the little file pieces in the library
remember - be methodical always think and make sure you have a backup... if nothing else export to DVD files.

  • Importing IPTC data into LR database

I have a many jpeg images on my HD that have basic IPTC data incorporated. Just to set the scene, in the system I used to set this up, I have a short 'Title', such 'Peter enjoying a meal in Venice" and a more wordy description, such as 'This restaurant overlooks the Grand Canal with St Maggiore on the other side. Superb meal consisting of: etc'. For IPTC transalation, I set 'Title' = IPTC Headline (and for a reason to do with the system, IPTC Object Name); 'Description' = IPTC Caption/Abstract. (These are the IPTC tags provided by the system).
For importing into LR, I have set up an IPTC preset to include Basic Info - Caption, IPTC Content - Headline, IPTC Status - Title. The successfully imports my short 'Title', but NOT the description.
Can anyone please advise how I can import the description.
    Peter

You can store the list of data from the Excel sheet that you have read already into an ArrayList
Then go through the JDBC tutorial, and learn how to insert a single record into the table.
After you understand how to insert a single record, you can iterate through the ArrayList of data and insert them into the table in the database.
If you know JDBC, see if you can use OR Mapping frameworks like Hibernate or iBatis, they make it very easy to manage database in Java.

  • How to read XMP metadata of an indd file using Actionscript

    Hi All,
I am trying to read XMP metadata of an indd file using CS Extension Builder in Flash Builder 4.5.
The documentation has many class like XMPmeta, XMPStruct, etc.
I have got the currently opened document in InDesign as follows:
    var myDoc:Document = InDesign.app.activeDocument();
And a new XMPmeta object is created as follows:
    var myXMP:XMPMeta = new XMPMeta();
How to initialize document's xmp metadata in the XMPMeta object? Or is there any other way to get the XMP metadata of currently opened document in InDesign?

I have found that the XMP data of an InDesign document can be retrieved in actionscript as follows:
    InDesign.app.activeDocument.metadataPreferences
    This returns the MetadataPreference object.
But I am not able to iterate each namespace in the xmp. There isn't any XMPFile class which allows me to serialize the object to xml file so that I can iterate all elements in the XMP.
I could not relate class like XMPMeta, XMPProp, etc. with the MetaDataPreference class. So, how to obtain the entire xmp packet from the MetadataPreference object?
Can anyone shed light on this?

  • Is writing IPTC data in JPG files a lossless operation?

When an opened JPG files is resaved it is lossy.
In Bridge the file is not opened but is still resaved after entering IPTC data.

I don't know for sure, but I don't see why it shouldn't be a lossless operation. Image data shouldn't be touched, and the metadata will just be appended to the file.
