Reader 11 very very slow

Hi
Ever since updating to Reader 11 I have found Reader CRIPPLINGLY slow. PDF's will open, then freeze, then give 'not responding' and somtimes crash. If I am lucky, when I shut everything else down, it might cooperate if I am patient.
What's going on here?!!
I am on PC, Windows XP, 2002, Professional, SP3
Nightmare as I use a lot of pdf's...
Please help!
(Advised to update so by Firefox - if I recall correctly - as not to do so apparently left me open to security issues. Or possibly not being able to view flash on YouTube. Or maybe both. Sorry - just can't remember)

We are having this issue as well.  It appears to be a SUBSTANTIAL amount of disk i/o to the appdata directory - specifically the GlobData file in the JSCache directory.  Which isn't an issue for people with disk caching enabled on a local HDD, but is an issue for environments where %APPDATA% is redirected to a network share (like us) and every read/write by the 4 instances of reader are going to the network...  Simple actions like opening Reader XI or choosing the "enable all features" takes 45 seconds - 120 seconds.
Wonder why the JSCache directory isn't in the %LOCAL APPDATA% folder structure.  ???
Wasn't an issue with Reader X...  Also, all combinations of protected mode and enhanced security, enabled and/or disabled have no impact on behavior.  Also, nothing is actually crashing, it's just SO slow that we had to uninstall Reader XI and go back to Reader X...
FWIW.

  • G5 Dual - DVD Reader has gone very very slow after Leopard

    After 1 Migrate install and 1 clean install, I notice that reinstalling apps is taking 4/5 times as long as they should it's as if my DVD Reader has gone very very slow. I thought at first it was the migration that had caused FCPS2 to reinstall slow.
    (Sony DVD RW AW-G170A 4 months old) on G5 Dual 2's)
    FCPS2 wanted 19-hrs to install, I waited 6 hrs and then gave up. Luckily or unluckily as the case may be I used the time install Leo on my other Macs.
    In the end I have installed Apps over the Firewire network connected to my other G5 Dual with the stock DVD drive, they are installing fast now.

    Some more info about my setup:
    *Simultaneous Dual band AEBS:*
    Radio Mode: 802.11n only (5 GHz) - 802.11b/g
    Radio Channel Selection: Manual - 161 (5GHz), 6(2.4GHz)
    *Airport Express:*
    Wireless mode: Extend a wireless network
    Allow wireless clients checked under the name of the network (same as for AEBS).
    Both are WPA/WPA2 Personal security. And both the routers were upgraded to 7.4.2 firmware this morning with the hope that it will help.
    *N Devices (both working fine):*
    Apple TV 40GB
    2009 Model Mac Mini upgraded to Snow Leopard - working perfectly.
    *G Devices:*
    Thinkpad running WinXP
    Dell Laptop running WinXP
    Acer Netbook running WinXP
    iPod Touch
    iPhone 3G
    Linksys webcam
    _All of the above are working fine_.
    +2008 model Mac mini -+ upgrade to Snow Leopard shows extremely slow wifi connection that it is unusable. It takes 20min to load apple homepage. When I boot from the clone of my Leopard lying on my external drive, it works perfectly.
    I compared the settings between all the tabs of Network-->Airport-->Advanced and they are identical between Snow Leopard and Leopard mode except that SL doesn't have the "Apple Talk" tab.
    Appreciate any help to debug this.

  • My macbook pro is running very slow and very very hot

    hi everyone I have a 13 inch mid 2012 MacBook pro,
    it is running very very slow and extremely hot, I downloaded a program called smc fan control and it is reading the internal temperature of my computer as 80 degrees Celsius. I was looking on the forums and saw that I should run an apple hardware test. which I have done and it is coming up with Error 4/MOT/4/40000002: EXHAUST-2003
    what does this mean? is it something to do with my fan?
    also there is a very strange clicking noise when I lift the mac up or if its on its side and sometimes it just randomly freezes,  the computer does not respond and then it restarts.
    what do I do?
    please help!

    " the fan didn't seem congested with dust, at least not enough to cause any malfunction."
    The lint and crap builds up in the heat exchanger radiator. It's the grilled thing at the output of the fan.
    https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Mid+2012+Fan+Replacemen t/10367
    Look at step 6. It's that grilled thing at the top of the fan. If you remove the fan that radiator is probably clogged with lint. Brush it all away and if possible blow out the fan with compressed air. Make sure the fan turns freely and doesn't feel stiff.

    This isn't a MBP radiator but the problem will look like this.

  • TS1398 since i have updated the latest software i am facing problem using wifi which is very very slow most of the time or wont connect at all was that update supposed to be for better or worse

    is apple product going down hill it seems their updates are creating a lot of problem now the wifi connection is really ******* me off it doesnt connect or even if it does its very very slow i used to love using iphone but i think its time to move on to something else they have taken everyone for granted

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Mark.
    I've never come across your first problem on any of the Apple notebooks I currently own (or have owned in the past). Then again, perhaps I'm not looking close enough.
    Have you compared it with any other 12" PowerBook? If not, perhaps you might be able to try that at a local store with units on display.
    Otherwise you might want to give AppleCare a call. Alternatively, if you have an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider near you (I don't know where you are located) then you can take it in to be checked.
    As for your second problem (uneven illumination), that has been known to afflict other notebooks. My own 15" PB has had its screen replaced on two occasions because of this. Depending on the severity, you might be able to get it replaced. Mine became so bad that the screen was effectively unusable.
    To be honest, here in the UK, I would actually try for a replacement PowerBook - if the problems were severe enough and also because your PB is still very new. However the consumer laws in your country (wherever that may be) might be very different to mine.

  • Firefox (3.6.10) is very sluggish/slow and hangs up

    All of a sudden Firefox (3.6.10) is very sluggish/slow and hangs up
    I've been using Firefox (very actively) for over a year now and all of a sudden (yesterday) it began to act very sluggishly. On sites I have always visited frequently it hangs up for periods of 15-90 seconds or more, won't scroll down, won't open hot links, slowly opens new tabs ...
    I rebooted my PC (multiple times), powered down my modem and router, ran a Norton disk optimization - essentially making sure it was not an outside factor effecting Firefox's performance. (Note: I am using a cable connection.)
    I then ran a side by side speed comparison with Internet explorer (on my 2nd monitor) going to the same web sites, and IE had no problems/hang-ups.
    FYI I only have a couple of add ins/extensions (Java, Microsoft Framework, Norton, No Squint, & RealPlayer) and none of those are new within the past few weeks at least.
    Any ideas on what could be causing this? How to fix? (As I much prefer Firefox to any Microsoft product.)
    Thanks.

    Yes, FF gets sluggish from time to time. Sorry but it's the fact! FF also cannot render some websites properly (especially v3.6.10). I'm a big fan of all Mozilla software but FF 3.6.10 makes me very disappointed.

  • My BlackBerry Messenger is very very slow. I am not rece...

    My BlackBerry Messenger is very very slow. I am not receiving the messages in a timely fashion.

    Do you mean your iPhone got wet in the rain?  If so, turn it off, put it in a plastic bag with some uncooked rice and let it dry out for several days (minimum).  You might want to change the rice out every day too, especially if you notice it swelling (from moisture coming out of the phone).
    Continue to use it and you risk further harm from continued water damage.  If it does not work after drying out, then you can take it to Apple and pay for an out of warranty exchange (water damage voids the warranty, so you would have to pay the replacement fee).

  • Reasons why CS6 is running very very slow?

    I have InDesign CS6 and the program is running extremely slow. I have googled and tried all troublshooting options but still cannot even highlight a sentence without it taking 30 seconds. Just going from one document to the next takes a very very long time. Besides for turning preflight off and other tricks is there anything else I can do to fix this problem?

    Are you working documents from an older version of Indesign? I found that even though the document is "converted" Indesign CC has major problems with any older version's files.
    I had to convert all my old files by copying masters and pages to a new, blank indesign cc document. All the speed issues went away.
    Unfortunately, even though you can open the file, I don't feel it's compatible because you can't really work at that speed and still be profitable.
    But hope that helps...

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) VERY VERY VERY Slow

    Hi Folks,
    First, let me start to say I am an IT Professional by trade and know a thing or two about fixing PC/Macs, but this one is stumping me.  A friend has a 13-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro that started to run very very very slow.  I figured it was just a bad mechanical drive and figured swapping it out with a new SSD would be the fix.  Well, that didn't work and I couldn't even partition the new drive.  I figured maybe I had a DOA drive, so I connected the new drive via a SATA to USB adapter to another Mac and a PC and it runs great.  I researched the error I got during formating and it was recommended to replace the SATA flex cable.  The part took about a week to arrive, so the battery fully died.  I couldn't get the Mac wouldn't power up after replacing the SATA cable and I didn't get a charge light either.  I figured OK, maybe I have a bad power cord, so I tried another and didn't work either.  I can only get it to power up with a 85w charger, but it doesn't seem the battery is charing either.  OK, so we have power but it's acting weird... and now I could format the drive.  Thought that was it and I could call this one done.  I thought the install was running very slow (maybe 15 minutes to preload all the setup files) but I still let the setup routine run over night.  Woke up the next day and the setup was still running!  I am running out of ideas what is going on with this MacBook Pro.  Any ideas??

    jmkalfut,
    I have the same model MacBook Pro as your friend. Regarding the speed of the setup, one possibility is that the new internal SATA cable is also faulty. What I don’t understand is the logic in this part of your post:
    The part took about a week to arrive, so the battery fully died.
    Why would the time it took to deliver the new internal SATA cable be the cause of its battery fully dying? Since you’re currently able to get the MacBook Pro to run by using a 85 W charger, what information is shown about the battery in System Information when it’s running? Perhaps its battery needs to be replaced? Have you tried using a different 60 W charger, to see if the original charger needs to be replaced?

  • Trouble installing photoshop update, and very, very slow P.Shop loading when hit Edit.

    How do I install new update? When I go to my Programs, I can't find "Inspiration Browser", only "Elements 8". Directions say to uninstall Inspir. Browser but I can't find it in my programs. My Photoshop is VERY VERY slow to come up when I hit "Edit". Why is this?

    Did you read the comments, either on the AUR page or in the output that you posted? They explain it.

  • Very very very slow

    Since today, I have noticed very very very slow loading times on my site. Anybody else noticing this problem?
    Thanks.

    No more slowness for me!!! I have faithfully used .mac even before it was .mac it was iTools and was free. Apple is great and I own everything from an iPhone to laptops and iMac, however, there is one thing that apple can not do well and that is hosting!!!!!!!! Got sick of complaints from clients and decided to switch to 1 and 1. My sights load so fast it is almost sickening. I went from 10 to 15 second load times on a cable connection, to we are talking literally milliseconds in some cases now. Unless Apple makes some sort of change alot more will be leaving .mac. Here is a few of my sites.

    I am using ipod touch 4g 8 gb, with ios6 software. It is getting very very slow even after i reinstalled the software. Apps like temple run 2 and subway surfers are getting stuck and it is very very slow.My ipod has 2.6 gb free space. What is the problem. I am not getting to know. Even after i reinstalled these apps it is still getting stuck and it is very very slow. Is this what i get after paying so much money for ipod. Is this what i get very poor perfomance.

    Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.
    Next
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Address Book is very very slow and mixes up data

    Address Book has been mixing up addresses. Many contacts have phone numbers and email addresses from other contacts. It's also become very, very slow. For example, making any change brings on about 30 to 60 seconds of the spinning ball.
    How do I fix it? What's going on with this thing?

    You are not alone..
    I am getting random contacts with the phone number repeating over 60 times. Deleting them is painfully slow.

  • Very very slow import using LOG and Transfer

    I am using a CANON VIXAIA HF10.and the clips are importing very very slow. The max time on each clip is only 5 min or so. Is there a way to speed this up? Thanks.

    Log and transfer only supports AVCHD. It does not support AVCHD Lite, nor will it work with Motion JPEG media. You could use third party software to convert it, or iMovie and then export a QuickTime movie from there in the correct codec and format.

  • Very very slow file access iSCSI NSS on SLES11/XEN/OES11

    Hi,
    Like many Novell customers while carrying out a hardware refresh we are moving off traditional Netware 6.5 to OES11 and at the same time virtualising our environment.
    We have new Dell Poweredge 620 serves attached by 10gig iSCSI to Equalogic SAN
    Installed SLES will all patches and updates and XEN and then created OES11 SP2 virtual machines, these connect to NSS volume by iSCSI
    Migrated files from traditional netware server to new hardware and stated testing and ran into very very slow files access times
    A 3.5mb pdf file takes close to 10 minutes to open from local PC with Novell Client installed, same if no client and open via cifs. Opening same file off traditional NW6.5 server takes 3-4 seconds.
    We have had a case open with Novell for almost 2 months but they are unable to resolve.
    To test other options we installed VMWare ESXi on the internal usb flash drive and booted off that, created same OES11 VM and connected to NSS on SAN and same pdf open in seconds.
    The current stack of SLES11/XEN/OES11 is not able to be put into production
    Any ideas where the bottleneck might be? We think is in XEN.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    As also mentioned in the SUSE forums, there is the option of using the Equallogic Hit Kit. One of the tools, next to the great autoconfigure options it has, is the eqltune tool.
    Some of the stuff that I've found important:
    -gro is known read performance killer. Switch if off on the iSCSI interfaces.
    - if possible (meaning you have decent hardware), disable flowcontrol as this generally offers stability but at the cost of performance. If your hardware is decent, this form of traffic control should not be needed.
    -To have multipath work correctly over iSCSI and starting SLES 11 SP1. Make sure kernel routing and arp handling are set correctly (not directly relevant if you only have 1 10 GB link):
    net.ipv4.conf.[iSCSI interfaceX name].arp_ignore = 1
    net.ipv4.conf.[iSCSI interfaceX name].arp_announce = 2
    net.ipv4.conf.[iSCSI interfaceX name].rp_filter = 2
    Test if traffic is actively routed over both iSCSI interfaces:
    ping -I [iSCSI interfaceX name] [iSCSI Group IP EQL]
    -Make sure network buffers etc are adequately set as recommended by Dell (set in /etc/sysctl.conf):
    #NetEyes Increase network buffer sizes for iSCSI
    net.core.rmem_max = 16777216
    net.core.wmem_max = 16777216
    net.ipv4.tcp_rmem = 8192 87380 16777216
    net.ipv4.tcp_wmem = 4096 65536 16777216
    net.core.wmem_default = 262144
    net.core.rmem_default = 262144
    -Settings for the /etc/iscsi/iscsid.conf I'm using:
    node.startup = automatic # <--- review and set according to environment
    node.session.timeo.replacement_timeout = 60
    node.conn[0].timeo.login_timeout = 15
    node.conn[0].timeo.logout_timeout = 15
    node.conn[0].timeo.noop_out_interval = 5
    node.conn[0].timeo.noop_out_timeout = 5
    node.session.err_timeo.abort_timeout = 15
    node.session.err_timeo.lu_reset_timeout = 20 #Default is 30
    node.session.err_timeo.tgt_reset_timeout=20 #Default is 30
    node.session.initial_login_retry_max = 12 # Default is 4
    node.session.cmds_max = 1024 #< --- Default is 128
    node.session.queue_depth = 128 #< --- Default is 32
    node.session.iscsi.InitialR2T = No
    node.session.iscsi.ImmediateData = Yes
    node.session.iscsi.FirstBurstLength = 262144
    node.session.iscsi.MaxBurstLength = 16776192
    node.conn[0].iscsi.MaxRecvDataSegmentLength = 131072 #A lower value improves latency at the cost of higher IO throughput
    discovery.sendtargets.iscsi.MaxRecvDataSegmentLeng th = 32768
    node.session.iscsi.FastAbort = No # < --- default is Yes
    -Have Jumbo frames configured on the iSCSI interfaces & iSCSI switch.
    If you are using multipathd instead of the dm-switch provided with the Equallogic Hit kit, make sure the /etc/multipath.conf holds the optimal settings for the Equallogic arrays.
    Ever since Xen with SLES 11 SP1 we have been seeing strong performing virtual servers. We still use 1GB connections (two 1GB connections for each server, serving upto 180~190Mb/s).
    There could be a difference with the 10GB setup, where multipath is not really needed or used (depending on the scale of your setup). One important thing is that the iSCSI switches are doing their thing correctly. But seeing you've already found better results tuning network parameters on the Xen host, seems to indicate that's ok.
    Cheers,
    Willem
