Reader defaults to Explorer instead of Firefox

Since downloading Internet Exploer 8 anytime I click on a URL imbedded in a Word Document that ends in a PDF extension the system defaults to Intenet Explorer even though my default browser is clerly set as Firefox. This doesn't happen with any other imbedded URLs that don't have the PDF extension. Is this a Microsoft problem of an Adobe issue? Any known fixes? An hour and 1/2 on the phone with Mocrosoft provided only the normal frustration and no solution.

  • .pdf hyperlinks in word open in Internet Explorer instead of Firefox

I have website addresses copied and pasted into a word document, which automatically makes them a hyperlink. Normal website addresses open fine in firefox (which is my default browser) when I Ctrl+click on them. Web links to a .pdf, however, open Internet Explorer and then open in Adobe Acrobat inside Internet Explorer. How can I get .pdf links to open in Firefox when I Ctrl+click on them?

I have the same problem (roughly) - I have PDF hyperlinks in an Excel spreadsheet and, when clicked, instead of them opening directly in Acrobat (or via Firefox, my default browser), they open via IE. Regular HTML links in the Excel spreadsheet open in Firefox.
I have enabled the '''Block PDF files' access to all web sites''' option under ''Trust Manager'' category in the Adobe Reader ''Preferences'' tab.
I have also disabled the '''Adobe PDF Link Helper''' Extension in the ''Manage Add-ons'' tab in IE.
Obviously, neither of these settings made any difference.

  • Hyperlink in MS office to pdf opens in Internet Explorer instead of Firefox

I have some documents (Excel, Word) that contain hyperlinks.
Hyperlinks to websites (www.***.com or http://***.htm) nicely open in Firefox. But links to online pdf's (http://www.***.com/***.pdf) all open in Internet Explorer.
    How can I change this?
I'm using Windows XP pro, Firefox 3.0.5, Office 2003, Adobe Reader 9.0.0

  • When in my email, my links open into internet explorer instead of firefox

When I am in my email and a message has a link and I open the link, instead of going to firefox, it opens in internet explorer, I use firefox not internet explorer.

Hello, I'm having this exact same problem since the last few days, somethings changed on how the hotmail webpage is loading, or what it's loading, as Google chrome also reports an 'Aw-Snap' webpage error.

  • Thought Firefox upgrade would fix problem of not being able to download YouTube videos. It did not. May I suggest that you use Explorer instead. Firefox live chat is not working either.

Firefox and YouTube do not work well together. USE EXPLORER INSTEAD to download videos.

    Carolyn:
I just now did exactly as you recommended. Result? No change.
Even after trashing the files and restarting and everything else, the Activity Window and YouTube behave exactly as they did before.
(I had actually previously tried something very similar to your recommendation, and it didn't have any effect then either.)
In case it's helpful, here's an example of what one of the mystery components that load endlessly in the Activity Window is listed as:

  • Craigslist replies, opens Internet Explorer instead of FireFox why does this happen?

When I reply to a add, instead of opening FireFox my default brouser, it opens IE and I have to login to my hotmail account again.

It typically opens the default browser regardless of which browser you're actually using.  I'm wondering if there's a funky registry key or something that confuses things for your system.
Either way, we usually launch the default system browse, which is not necessarily the browser you started the installation with.  This is a long-standing bad experience, and something that I complain to the team that makes the installer about on a regular basis.  Everyone involved recognizes that the behavior is less than ideal, but it's a fundamental design problem and it's not something that can be addressed with a simple fix.  It *is* very much on the radar as something that we want changed, and I'm pretty sure that it will get resolved in the installer over the long-term.
In the meantime, if you would like to avoid the Flash Player upgrade process entirely, Google Chrome includes Flash Player as a built-in component.  There's nothing separate to download from Adobe, and all the updates are made available directly through Chrome's update mechanism.

  • When trying to login to hotmail, I get message asking me to select program to read default.apsx file, i.e. firefox will no longer open hotmail; ; this just started yesterday

I can't login to hotmail and read my email because after filling in the login and password it now states it needs to open the default.aspx file from http://sn120w.snt120.mail.live.com and asks me what program to use to open the default.aspx file.

Hotmail is rolling out a server change at their end which might be causing this problem. Mozilla has spoken to them about it and they are trying to fix it. I won't be able to provide you a time estimate by when it will be solved but hotmail/mozilla is certainly looking at this issue.
I will let you know if get any updates!

  • Google desktop and Picasa open Internet Explorer even though Firefox is my default browser

I am using Firefox 6, and no matter what I do clicking on Google Desktop opens Internet Explorer instead of Firefox. I have set Firefox as the default browser in at least 3 places: In Firefox itself; on the Internet Options section of the Control Panel; In the add/remove programs Set Default Programs screen. This is all in Windows XP professional. The same problem happens with Picasa online albums (when I go from my computer's Picasa to Web Albums). I don't know when this started, but now I cannot get my Web timeline. I have uninstalled Google Desktop.

  • Outlook keeps opening links in Internet Explorer, regardless of Firefox being the default browser

I have Firefox 4.0.1 running on a Windows 7, 64-bit computer. I have Internet Explorer 9.0.8112.16421 installed as well.
I use Outlook here at work and have Outlook version 14.0.5128.5000 installed, which is part of Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010.
I have tried to set Firefox as the default browser on the computer. When I go to Start->Default programs, Firefox is set to default. When I open Firefox and check in settings, it says it is currently the default browser. I have tried to set IE as the default, then switch back to Firefox etc. But still regardless of this, Outlook opens all links in emails in Internet Explorer.
It is very annoying as IE is a lot slower than Firefox, especially when I already have Firefox runnint and Outlook needs to start a new session of IE every time I open a link.
Does anyone know how I can force Outlook to open links in Firefox when Firefox is already the default browser on the computer but Outlook still opens links in IE?

I have the same problem (roughly) - I have PDF hyperlinks in an Excel spreadsheet and, when clicked, instead of them opening directly in Acrobat (or via Firefox, my default browser), they open via IE. Regular HTML links in the Excel spreadsheet open in Firefox.

  • If I click on a link in an e-mail in Thunderbird it opens in IE instead of Firefox, Firefox is my default browser. How do I fix this?

Even when I clicked on 'help' in Thunderbird it opened in IE. All of the help articles I've read tell me to make Firefox the default browser but it already is.

it seems possible that there was some corruption in your system (registry) and once you uninstalled Internet Explorer, your system didn't have any choice but to insist on opening web pages in the default browser (in your case, FireFox)
There are numerous ways to 'screw up' defaults - both as DEFAULT PROGRAMS, and as ASSOCIATED FILE TYPES (Control Panel)
If messing with the control panel doesn't work, another idea is to: SET INTERNET EXPLORER as Default, check to see that it works as expected, reboot your machine, SET FIREFOX as Default; reboot.
Win8 [ Control Panel \ All Control Panel Items \ Default Programs ]
Uninstalling may not be an ideal fix for those who use Internet Explorer occasionally --- as i do for "Print Selected" : I.E. allows you to "Print Selection" of text/images on a web page, and then VIEW (Print Preview) the selection and adjust the margins and 'Scale' so as to fit your selection in the correct SIZE and the correct NUMBER of pages. None of the plugins/extensions for FF seem to do this properly (in my experience).
Nonetheless (if you need Internet Explorer), it may be possible for users to do as "NIGH" has pointed out (uninstall Internet Explorer), reboot, and then immediately reinstall it. This may 'FIX' the OPEN IN [default] BROWSER issue (you might still have to go in and select FF as default), but you might have to accept other complications with the use of Internet Explorer - i.e. the different preferences that I.E. uses (that you had set before uninstalling) may have to be 're-selected' or 're-implemented'.
as always, 'your mileage may vary'

  • Why is my Firefox Add-ons (Crowdstar Gamebar - Ask Toolbar) installed on Internet Explorer instead? Some of my game friends can see and use it on Firefox.

Why is Firefox add-on (Crowdstar Gamebar) installed on Internet Explorer instead? Some of my game friends can see and use it on Firefox after installing it on Firefox.
    My Firefox is version 3.6.9.
    http://gb.crowdstar.com/

That is not a Firefox addon, it is an installer package that can install anything it wants on your PC. As far as why it installed on IE and not Firefox, that would be a question for technical support for that product.

  • When sharing a link from Firefox, the program automatically opens Internet Explorer and not Thunderbird. Can Thunderbird be made the default for sharing links from Firefox?

When sharing a link or page via email, either the webpage or Firefox will open up Internet Explorer to share the link or page. As I use Thunderbird for emailing, could Firefox open Thunderbird automatically instead of internet Explorer?

From Firefox, I click on "File' and then 'Email link'.
This results in a new Outlook message opening automatically, with the URL copied into the body of the message.
I then add my own text, see the screenshot image. That's where the formatting problems come in!
    Cheers,

  • Update opens Windows Explorer instead of download iOS 5...

When I connect my iPad 2 (4.3.3) to iTunes (10.5), then select Update, it opens Windows Explorer instead of looking for the update from Apple.  How can I get it to download iOS 5?  I am using 32-bit Windows 7 Enterprise.

  • I have downloaded MF as a secondary browser as advised to open some video files however when i try and open videos it defaults to Explorer. How can I direct it to MF?

I have purchased DVD and using this link D:\powerseller_challenge.html to open video tutorials however Explorer couldnt open so was advised to download MF. However I still dont know if tutorial videos work because when I try to open them the browser defaults to Explorer. I dont really want to make Firefox my default browser in case I have problems. Am not particularly confident with ICT.

Thanks very much. Advice from my brother was just to copy and paste the link from Explorer to Firefox. It worked but needed to download a plug-in. Did this but message was 'no suitable plug-ins found' and had to search manually. Managed to find one manually but there was warning attached that it was executable file (http://aihdownload.adobe.com/bin/install_flashplayer10_chrd_aih.exe) and could contain viruses. Didnt think it could be so hard to open a video!!!

  • Browser defaults to Explorer always and only I click on hypertext!! Why?

Firefox is, without doubt, my default browser. Whenever, and without fail, I click an URL (hypertext) that I have received via e-mail, it opens in Windows Explorer! In order to have it open in FF I have to paste it in.
Can you tell me how to fix this/destroy Explorer?
    Thanks very much.

Try to redo the default browser and make another browser like IE the default browser and then let Firefox do it again.<br />
