Reader won't start, Fedora Core 6 newbie

I am a Linux newbie running an up-to-date Fedora Core 6 with GNOME.
I just installed the Adobe Reader version 7.0.8 for Linux .rpm file by downloading and right clicking it and choosing Open with Software Installer.
I find the Adobe Reader launch icon in Applications > Office, but double clicking it or opening it does not start the Reader. Properties > Permissions allow executing the file as a program.
I opened a terminal window, changed my directory to /usr/local/Adobe/Acrobat 7.0/bin and typed acroread into the command line. I received a list of expr: syntax error messages.
What have I done wrong? Thanks.
Bill

Thanks so Much your Help... commenting out line 644 in the <location you chose during install>/bin/acoread....<br /><br />Just in case any of the newer users are wondering how to easily find this path or want to check the paths of other applications.<br /><br />at the command line interface... type the following:<br /><br />which acroread <enter><br /><it will return> <br />/usr/bin/acroread<br /><br />then do this:<br /><br />ls -l /usr/bin/acroread<br /><will return this><br />lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 32 Feb 17 07:32 /usr/bin/acroread -> /usr/Adobe/Acrobat7/bin/acroread<br /><br />If you you look at the beginning of the line you'll notice the <br /><b>l</b>rwxrwxrwx The "l" sybolizes that /usr/bin/acroread is actually a link to /usr/Adobe/Acrobat7/bin/acroread <br />In order to apply the fix you now know the correct path to edit that acroread file properly.<br /><br />As root I used gedit with the numbers preference turned on by typing the following: <br /><br />gedit /usr/Adobe/Acrobat7/bin/acroread<br /><br />(Once it opened under Edit ---> preferences, Under the view tab, check the box that says Display Line Numbers.<br /><br />Thanks Gaurav Khurana for your tip... and I hope this helps some people that might not already be familiar with this process!!<br /><br />Chris

  • Reader won't start, reinstall doesn't help

    Hi,
Having trouble with a couple of computers where Adobe Reader won't start up. This is only hapenning on two of our workstations. All are Windows 7 64 bit fully patched. Anti-virus is ESET. Reader is latest 11.0.6.
Upon log in you are presented with an error dialogue titled "reader_sl.exe - application error" with the text "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022). Click OK to close the application."
When you try to start Reader, you get the "Adobe Reader Protected Mode" dialogue. Attempting to open without protected mode results in a "Fatal Error" dialogue stating "Acrobat failed to load its Core DLL".
What I've tried so far includes removing then reinstalling Reader,  using the Reader cleanup app and then reinstalling, running a full virus scan, disabling AV, using the TDSSKiller app from Kaspersky.
Anyone have any clues on how to get Reader working or what I should be debugging next?
    Thanks.
    Ronny

Same problem here, have done the following to try and resolve.
Ran 3 different Rootkit Detectors including Kapersky.
    Ran Sophos Scan
    Ran sfc /scannow
have reinstalled twice, including a full uninstall and also using the Adobe Clean tool.
Getting very upset and frustrated with this issue, its not malware related in this instance and Adobe need to get their act together.
Have worked in IT support for years now and I have seen more issues with Reader in the last month than ever.
Its become a horrible buggy piece of software.
EDIT: Not to mention the error code is ridiculous, what DLL are we even talking about here?
    So frustrated... FML

  • Adobe Reader won't start automatically

I've downloaded Adobe Reader to my Windows8 system,, but when I try to open a pdf file fom on-line it asks me which App I want to use, but Reader isn't listed as a choice.  When I clik look for other Apps on computer, I can't find Reader anywhere (not in programs, documents, etc).  It will not start automatically.  The only way I can't make it work is by Saving the pdf file, then going to my graphic start page and cliking the Adobe reader icon which has been there (and only there) since it was downloaded.  It's really time consuming and I have a lot of psf files I have to go back and delte from my downloads

the App version self-loaded and it worked initially whenever I tried to open a pdf file, but this is a new touchscreen Acer and I'm used to having actual programs, not Apps and I don't quite understand it yet...Of course like everything else with Windows 8, most thing don't work the way they used to  after you do any updates.   I'd love to go back to Windows 7, or even XP.  I got this for Christmas and so far (according to it's own software program), it's shut down a total of 418 times, the majority of causes had to do with Explorer.

  • Adobe reader won't start

On my virgin system (no malware), win 7 x64 was a good working old adobe reader 9.
Offered an update, I accepted for update XI. And since them won't run any adobe reader.
I tried reinstall, repair, cleaning tool, restart you offered before.
I tried it on a different but similar, virgin machine and received the same error.
Came up a frosty adobe reader window and after 5 sec it disappears. Nothing helps...
I don't want to complaining about your free reader, but... It was not a great job...

    Three things to try...
Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html

  • Missing Enterprise Manager on Fedora Core 2

Enterprise Manager for Linux Fedora Core 10g Aug 19, 2001 8:01 PM
    Reply
Enterprise Manager Fedora Core 2 with Oracle 10g.
I can not locate OEMAPP anywhere on my disk. I have reinstalled the system several times, but it does not seem to get installed on my computer.
I have no problem with the system otherwise, and can run Enterprise Manager (oemapp.bat) from an XP workstation and connect.
I have selected a custom install as well, and it does not install the program.
    I can run
    emctl start dbconsole
and run Enterprise Manager thru HTML (localhost:5100)
but would very much like to run the graphical version.
    Can anyone assist?
Can I extract it from the CPIO?
    Can I download it somewhere?
I have seen that many others have run into this same issue, but have not been able to locate any resolution.
Anyone know how I can install it?
Has anyone tried to run 10g on Fedora core 3?
    Thanks.

Fedora Core 2 works fine with the Mega-180.  It has good
hardware detection capabilities and driver support for many
devices to get your PC up and running.  LCD support is
non-existant for Linux.  MSI better do something about this
before the competitors leave them further in the dust.
The longer MSI fails to fully support its products, the greater
the chance the SFF division is going to get turfed for lack
of profitability (eg dismal sales and continued bad reputation
as looks will only get you so far).
Create three CD-ROMs from the ISOs.  The fourth CD-ROM
may not be required.  The problem here is to find a fast
download mirror.  Try http://ftp://ftp.telus.net which is where I got
    mine.
If you have the room on your HDD you may just want to stuff
as much into the initial install as possible.  Beats having to
find out you need to install something later.  Since Linux is
new to you, chances are you will reinstall at a later date anyways
so don't worry if you system is not tuned, etc.
Once you have a working Internet connection to your Mega 180
go grab the latest chipset and video drivers from nVidia.  You
don't have to have them to have a working OS.  Print out the
installation documentation (easier to read paper).
For Fedora Core docomentation I just downloaded all the
Red Hat 9.0 PDF files and printed them off.  This could be
close to 1000 pages or so as I have a stack at least 2"
high.  This information makes an excellent base reference
point.  Easy to read but rather long.
Then experiment from there.  During install - do request
both KDE and Gnome GUIs.  This allows you flexibility to
observer how both work.  I prefer KDE.
Good luck - keep at it and eventually Linux will make it
to your everyday desktop but keep that M$ stuff handy
as not everything can be done in the Linux world.

  • Fedora core 6 sun app server won't start

Sun app server 8.2 bundled with creator 2u1 doesn't start. This install was running fine under fc5. Among other things I get the following with pe-start -reset which I think might be the crust of the problem:
"Unable to read system environment. No system environment will be used."
    Any help appreciated.

Exported projects to nb5.5 with visual-web pack and after fixing datasources and libraries things are working again. Could not find a solution for Creator2 on Fedora Core 6. Thanks anyway.

  • Acrobat reader XI won't start

    Hello,
For quite some time now I am unable to open Adobe acrobat reader / any other PDF file.
When I open it, in windows task manager I can see there is a running process, but it stays like that.
I have tried uninstalling, restarting my pc and reinstalling but it still won't start.
I am running on Windows 7 with all the important updates installed.
    Can anybody help please?

Now I'm trying to disabled reader_sl.exe from running on startup. I don't see it in Startup menu/Services/msconfig.
The only adobe related program that is running at starting is AdobeARM.exe.
Can anyone please point me in the right direction? Thank you
EDIT: Ok I found it myself. It was the AdobeARM.exe that was running reader_sl.exe. Disabling it in msconfig did the trick.
From this point I am not sure if it was both the eula.exe and reader_sl.exe or just the reader_sl.exe.
Good that I found it, now I can continue using my favorite PDF reader and it seems faster without the speedlauncher. Maybe because I have SanDisk ExpressCache.

  • Problem on adobe reader X, it won't start

    Hallo guys.
I've a problem on 3 pc in my company.
When you double-click on the adobe reader X icon, the program won't start, no error message, no events in windows, absolutely nothing at all.
The systems affected are windows 7 64bit, the user is a local administrator.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Please let me know the following:
    1. The exact version of Adobe Reade on your system. You can get the same by clicking on Help > About Adobe Reader.
    2. Do you get a process in the task manager by the name of AcroRd32.exe when you double click on a PDF on these machines?
    3. Are you able to launch Adobe Reader as a standalone application without trying to view any PDFs?
    Thanks

  • AE CS4 Won't Start on Multi-Core System

I use an older version of After Effects (AE CS4).  I recently built a new workstation that is bootable into different choices of multicore (up to 40 cores).
I can successfully start AE CS4 on the boot configs up to 16 cores.  But above that, AE CS4 won't start.  It won't even show the splash screen (but the AfterFX_32.exe process does appear in Task Manager).
Just wondering if there is any way to get AE CS4 to run on configs with more than 16 cores?
    Thanks for any ideas!

No. There is no way because at the time operating systems did not allow to use more cores and thus the underlying system libraries down to the C/C++ code cannot handle it.

All of a sudden my photoshop won't start and hang on the splash screen " the last message is "reading preferences"
    I Run WINXP service pack2.
    Photoshop version is 10.0.1
I rebooted did everything (without re-installing)
Is there a way to get out of this ?
    Bruno

You could try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.ef4a07f/1
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.
