Reader (X) and 3D PDFs

The company I work for recently switched over to using PDFs for a 2D drawing achiving format. With that said, we are considering also storing a 3D PDF with the CAD data to send to customers as well. We use Reader 9.4.1 for viewing and Pro/E Wildfire 5.0 for generation (or well, now it's being renamed to Creo Elements/Pro). For some reason, other users can create the 3D PDFs (pdf u3d) just fine, yet I have a strange problem. I can generate the file and when it opens, it shows an image of the model. Then after clicking on it to activate, the document goes blank and only shows the default gray PDF background, yet still shows the model tree with options to manipulate it as usual. So basically, once activating the 3D PDF, I cannot view or spin the model. Other users can view the same PDF though just fine, yet I cannot view theirs. As a result and frustration, I decided to upgrade to Reader X to see if it would fix my problem. Obviously it didn't work and things are still the same. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like a problem with your graphics card - the activated 3D viewport uses direct drawing, whereas the rest of the PDF page and poster image don't - so whenever an annotation vanishes on activation it's a clear hint there's a GPU driver or hardware problem.
What graphics card do you use and are the drivers fully updated?

Hi, I was working on a PDF writing comments using Adobe Reader on a Mac.  I clicked save and got a 'cannot save' message.  I then clicked save as instead, Reader froze and my PDF disappeared.  The only version saved has only my first comment.  Does Adobe Reader save to temporary files that I can access in order to recover my work?  Is there any other way to recover it?  Thanks!

    Hi @Pat Willener,
since I got the same problem as pdfprincess I hope you can help me. The 'Automatically save document changes to temporary file...' is enabled in my adobe reader.
A file I worked (commented) on a lot crashed. When I reopened the file, adobe reader didn't ask if I want to restore my changes in this file, as it is written on the help.adobe.com page. Is there any possibility to restore the changes manually from the temporary file?
Thanks in advance - it is really important for me to restore these changes!!

  • How to read, dispaly and open pdf files

Hi, I am very new to Java butI have VB6.0 background. My current requirement is to read pdf file names from a directory, then
show them on a form in a list (with their path in background pointing to the actual pdf files) and then once a user clicks any
file name, open that file on the form.
    For example:
My pdf files are in a directory as following:
    C:\myreports\user1\
    report1.pdf
    report2.pdf
    report3.pdf
    C:\myreports\user2\
    report1.pdf
    report5.pdf
The output on the form should look like this if user1 has logged in the system. Side note: I am able to get userid of the logged in person in a variable.
    My Reports:
    . Report 1
    . Report 2
    . Report 3
When a user clicks Report 1, it opens on the same form in pdf format.
    Thanks
    S.yhong

For the first part (Listing thepdf files in the directory) you can use the java.lang.File class.
    File f = new File("path to your directory");
    File files[] = f.listFiles();
then process the files array to find the files with extenction pdf
You can also use a file filter object and make the listFiles method return only the pdf files.
Please read the documentation about the File class for more info about it.
*/ For the displaying the pdf part is it good enough if you load the accrobat reader and with it. In that case you can do that using the Runtime.exec
Also you can search for free java based pdf viewers I am sure there must be meny.
And also the JTextPane might support pdf but I am not sure about it.

Just to say that this is my 1000th post :)

  • Reader X and Printing PDFs that are email attachments

Prior to Reader X we could have multiple PDFs attached to an email right click on each one and select print, they would all queue for printing without issue. Now that we have deployed Reader X this no longer appears to work. When you right click and select print it does successfully work the first time, however after that you cannot print via the same method until you close the open session of Reader. Also worth noting is that with Reader X when you open it two copies of AcroRd32.exe are running in the background. Has anyone else encountered this and have you been able to find a work around?

We are having the same issue but have yet to resolve the problem. I also would like to hear if anyone has a fix for this issue.

  • Adobe reader X and word PDF

I download the newst update and now I can't read any PDF files old or new. I have word 2007 opening and getting a file conversion request and the file just shows symbols no english at all. What has gone wrong. I have uninstalled and reload 2x.

Sounds like Word is trying to open your PDF's. You need to change the file associations for PDF.
Assuming you're on Windows, find a PDF that you have saved to your hard drive, right click, choose Open with>Choose default program. Choose REader and select the box that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".

  • Read-only AND Encrypted

I am using Acrobat XI Pro: is there a way to make a file read-only AND encrypted?

    Folks,
I may have found a way to create a pdf document with Acrobat XI Pro that is read-only AND encrypted. Please let me know if I have indeed succeeded or not, thank you!
The steps that I follow to create the read-only AND encrypted pdf document are as follows:
Create a plain pdf document, from MS Word for example
    Sanitize Document
    Create Form without fields
    Close Form Editing
    Encrypt with Password
    Save
Save As Other… => Reader Extended PDF... => Enable More Tools (includes form fill-in & save)…
I as a not-very-sophisticated-computer-user did not find a way to hack difficult to detect changes - such as the insertion or deletion of the word 'not' - into the resulting pdf document. But again, please let me know if you DO find a way to hack the resulting pdf document, thank you!
P.S. I think the resulting pdf document is essentially an encrypted form, albeit one without fields.

Hi.  I have a Dell PC running Windows 7 64 bit.  I have the latest version of Adobe Reader,  It worked yesterday.  Today I have job training to do that is due tomorrow morning and I can't open PDF files.  I have to open a guide and read it and take a test tomorrow.  I have deleted and reinstalled the application.  I have rebooted.  I have made sure my PDF's are associated with the program.  Every PDF on my computer won't open and I get the same error message.  It simply says Attempt to access invalid address.  How can I fix this?  Thanks.

    Hi Don,
I have seen this issue fixed for some users by modifying the following registry key:
The key is "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" MoveImages
Set the key to 1 instead of 0 then reboot the machine.
In case you still face the issue try the following registry key change:
The only thing you have to do is rename the following key at the REGEDIT, and everything will be fine !!
    BEFORE:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplore.exe
    AFTER:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplore.old
Note: Please take a backup of the registry before attempting this change.

  • When I converted a file from PDF to WORD.DOC it opened as Read Only and I'm unable to alter any of the text.  How can I solve this problem?

When I tried to convert a file from PDF to WORD.DOC it opened as Read Only and I'm unable to alter any of the text.  How do I solve this problem?  I don't know how to change it from Read Only.

    Dear Sara
Thank you very much for sending the converted file.  Yes, I am able to edit it - that will be very useful to me and I appreciate your help.
Referring to your previous message when you said you'd converted via Acrobat and not Acrobat.com, I'm converting via Acrobat.com because that's the only option that is shown (how do I convert via Acrobat? - perhaps that would be more successful).  I'm using the Export PDF website, and the OCR is enabled to "Recognize text in English UK".  However, I've just tried converting a different LPA pdf form, this time for Health & Welfare https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/245571/LPA114_He alth_welfare_LPA.pdf and again I have the same problem as before.  I've altered it from "Read only" and thought I'd then be able to enter text, but "Drawing Tools" is shown in the pane and I'm unable to enter anything onto the form - everything appears to be in images.  Also, the lettering on the heading of' page 1 has become jumbled, with the word "Public" overlaying the word "Guardian."  Any suggestions as to what it is I'm doing wrong would be welcome - I don't like to be beaten!
    Regards,
    Judith.

  • Problem with PDF Reader and Create PDF plugins

    Hello,
I use Internet Explorer Nine. The Adobe PDF Reader plugin disappeared from my browser. When I look at the listing of my add-ons, Adobe PDF reader appears in the list of all add-ons but not in the list of currently loaded add-ons. I have tried reinstalling Adobe Reader X and adding the FileOpen.api file to the plug-ins subfolder of the reader folder of the Reader 10.0 program files folder to no avail. How did the plugin disappear from by browser? How can I reinstall the plugin? Would reinstalling Adobe Acrobat Standard XI help?
I was once able, on every website, to turn in a portion of the text and/or pictures on the website into a PDF file by right-clicking and clicking on "Convert to Adobe PDF." Now, I can perform this action only on certain websites. When I cannot perform the action correctly, the entire webpage is converted into a PDF file. What could be causing the malfunction? How can I fix it?
Thank your for your help. Have an excellent day.

I&m not quite sure I understand your problem.  You have Adobe PDF Reader under All Add-ons; is it enabled?
Can you view any PDFs in Internet Explorer?

  • Saving PDF forms in Adobe Reader 8 and below

    Hi everyone,
I've created a PDF form for a survey using Acrobat XI Pro, and I've also Save As Other > Reader Extended PDF > Enable More Tools (includes form fill-in and save). I've tried it on Reader 9, X and XI, and I'm able to fill out the form, save it and email it back to myself. I've also emailed it to a few of my friends to try out the form and email it back to me, and most of them are able to do so.
But the problem is one of my friends who's using Reader 8 is unable to save the completed form. This message comes out when he tries to save it:
"This document contained certain rights to enable special features in Adobe Reader. The document has been changed since it was created and these rights are no longer valid. Please contact the author for the original version of this document."
I've tried reading about this problem online, but I can't seem to find a satisfactory answer anywhere. I'm not sure if anyone knows of a way to overcome this, or if it's just simply that Adobe Reader 8 and below are unable to save a PDF form.
Please help, I'm really at my wit's end.

    Windows Vista.
I'm trying to make sure my form works for every one of my respondents, as I can't be sure what kind of Reader versions each respondent will be using.

  • Acrobat 7.0.9 and Reader 9 - Issues opening PDF in IE6

I'm hoping someone can help.  All our users have Reader 9 installed as part of the corporate image.  Some of our users run Acrobat 7.0.9 as well.  For those users, we are experiencing issues where when we try to open a PDF in IE6.  We get the following error:
SW:iexplore.exe_application error - The instruction at "0x052f51b6" referenced memory at "0x00000010".  The memory could not be "read".
I've opened Acrobat 7.0.9 and checked Edit, Preference, Internet.  The option to untick "Display PDF in browser" is greyed out.
I've opened IE6 and gone to Tools, Manage Add-Ons and there is nothing listed for "Acrobat Control for ActiveX (pdf.ocx)" listed.
I've tried uninstalling Acrobat and reinstalling.  I've then also tried running a repair on both Reader and Acrobat, but nothing seem to be fixing the issue.  This has only started happening since we upgraded Reader to 9 in our image.
Any advice on how to fix the issue would be greatly appreciated.

The add annotations field shows as not allowed in the security options. So how do I send this form back with the changes??

I think you you need to click 'save' first, then it is saved to acrobat, where it will prompt to send.
