Reader X Changes PDF Icons

I installed Adobe Acrobat Reader X on a Windows XP Pro system that already had Adobe Acrobat 7 installed. I want to use Acrobat 7 as my main PDF application but I need Reader X occasionally to read PDFs that won't open with Acrobat 7. One of the irritations with the Reader X install is that it automatically (without asking) makes Reader X the default application for PDFs! This was easy to fix by re-assigning PDFs to Acrobat 7. However, Reader X install also changes the icon for PDFs, for example directory listings in My Computer show this new icon. I want the old icon back. Is there a way to restore the default Acrobat 7 icon. The new Reader X icon is ugly. I don't want to be reminded constantly that the Acrobat Reader X install hi-jacked my system and made a change without asking me.

As I understand things, Adobe does neither reccomend nor support the installation of both Acrobat and Reader on the same Win machine unless they are both versions 10 or higher. I would suggest removing both and reinstalling the one you want to keep or upgrading Acrobat to the latest version and reinstalling both.

  • Change .pdf icons to generic icon instead of preview image

    How can I change the icon of a .pdf on the desktop to the more generic red and white Adobe logo instead of the little preview picture? With the old-style icon it's easy to determine what's a .pdf - with everything a little preview now (which is too small to tell anything, at least for me) I have to actually read the file name to see what type of file it is.
    Not the end of the world but it would be nice to change.
    thanks

    What app do you want your PDF files to open with when they are double-clicked?
    If you click on the Desktop, type Command-J, and in the Desktop's view-options window uncheck the box for "Show icon preview," you will convert all the Desktop icons to whatever image the default "Open with" app has provided. If you have set Adobe Reader as the default app for PDF files, the icon will look like this:
    !http://i55.tinypic.com/2r4hf6p.jpg!
    If you have set Preview as the default app, the icon will look like this:
    !http://i51.tinypic.com/264noea.jpg!
    I don't know of an automatic way to have PDF files display an Adobe icon and still have them open in Preview when double-clicked.

  • Changing PDF Icons

    I am having some trouble managing PDF file icons... I am hoping someone here can help. I am running Leopard; everything up to date.
    I downloaded several books in PDF format. I now want to change the icons of each PDF file to match the front cover of said books. So I click on the file, get info, click on the icon on the top left, and paste the image. Everything seems to be fine on the get info screen; the icon on the top left changes to the respective image.
    I then close get info and look at the Finder window containing the PDF files. This is where the problem begins. In cover flow mode, some of the images are simply not there, or they will appear and disappear if I resize the window, or click through the preview. The icons are all correct on the bottom file listing in this mode. Looking at the icon mode, some of the icons will have changed while others will not. I primarily use the icon or coverflow modes in finder which is why this is a problem.
    I cannot detect any pattern in this behavior; some icons behave normally, most do not. All of the said images are PNG. Preview is my default PDF viewer. I am willing to do away with the "preview" function (where you can click through the PDF document within finder) in coverflow mode... it is useless anyway and I feel as if this is the actual problem. I can't seem to find a relevant set of preferences/settings, however.
    Am I missing something? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    Whether this is your problem or not, I don't know. But there is a bug in pasting icons where the icons won't show up in Cover Flow if the source png file for the icon was opened and copied out of Preview, and is of a largish size. Don't remember what the upper limit is, but I think is is 256 pixels max dimension. Any way, I just tried one using 500 pix max, and it doesn't show up, while 200 pix does.

  • PDF icon changed after deploying Reader 9.4.0 though Group Policy

    I extracted the .msi from the Reader 9.4.0 .exe, and deployed the software through group policy. Everthing works fine except now all .pdf icons show as a different Adobe icon, as opposed to the usual white icon with the red cursive "A" and the little red "pdf" box along the top left. However, if manually install the program using the .msi, the icon issue does not happen. There is nothing in the custimization Wizard for this, and I am hesitant to use Orca to try and change the .msi. The file association in windows is correct, just the icon has changed. Please help

    I did the same as you.
    // Open the field to allow user entries
    NumericField1.access = "open";
    // Allow override, means you will not get an error message when the calculated value is changed
    NumericField1.calculate.override = "disabled";
    NumericField1.value.float.value = "0";
    Restore original state of the field.
    NumericField1.access = "readOnly"
    NumericField1.calculate.override = "error"
    NumericField1.rawValue = null
    NumericField1.execCalculate()
    But you're right, the restore does not work.
    I tested execEvent("calculate") and execCalculate() with no avail.
    Very odd!

    Why does Adobe Reader change my icons to pdf?

    For the "why", you'd have to ask Adobe. If you are looking for a solution, this may be helpful:

  • Firefox 31 changes all PDF icons to Firefox HTML icons that I can not seem to change back, can this be rectified? Using Windows XP.....

    Once Firefox 31 is installed it sees all PDF files as Firefox HTML files and changes all of the PDF icons to Firefox HTML icons. This change can not seem to be reversed without uninstalling Firefox.
    Only the icon is changed, not the .PDF extension.

    Thank you for your reply but it's not that simple:
    Windows now thinks that the default file type for .pdf is Firfox HTML Document.
    I can change which program opens .pdf files but I can't change the icon.
    Not a Firefox problem? Really?
    EDIT:
    Let me explain further so that you can understand. In folder options / file types I can scroll thru and choose any file type / advanced and change the icon...every one of them except (now) .pdf. There is no advanced tab. Only the message about "restore" I mentioned before.
    Firefox changed the file association for .pdf files and now I can't fix it.
    And from another thread:
    "Firefox 31 is not converting or renaming your files. All it is doing is registering with the Windows OS as an application that is able to open the files and Windows then changes the file's icons accordingly.
    This should only occur if no other application has already registered your .pdf files."
    Well I guess that's not true is it?

    I have a PDF with a diagram, I need to translate the text so I open it in Illustrator.  The document opens up vertically oriented  I try to put it horizontal to be able to read and change the text  However everything I have done is not working  The artboard does change, but the diagram stays vertical.....Please help  I need to finish that for today..Please help

    A PDF usually consists of one to an indefinite number of clipping masks inside each other.
    You need to be very carefull with selecting stuff.
    So you need to read the manual on how to select stuff and on the basics of Illustrator.
    On top of that: because of the complex hierarchy of PDF files, it is kind of difficult to help you without seeing anything.

    Sorted out the problem myself - secret is you have to go to Full Screen view to be able to scroll down. Easy as that - but not so apparent if you are new to this.

  • How to get rid of the PDF icons that have locked my files

    All of a sudden all files, except Word docs, are locked (no lock symbol, tho') by PDF icons.  Please help if you know how to get rid of them. • Can I change PDF font size in ibook

    I downloaded a PDF file into ibooks but the font is too small. I don't want to zoom in because then I have to move the file left to right right to left. I would like to change the font size and the document should repaginate itself. Is that possible? otherwise how can you read a full pdf page in the iphone screen?

    Generally, one of the reasons people use PDF is because it doesn't repaginate. So complex, graphic-heavy layouts stay how they were designed.
    So if the PDF file doesn't offer the same "aA" icon that an ePub file does, I don't think you can upsize the text. (I don't have any PDF files in iBooks at present to really test this, but Apple's KB here says users cannot change font size with PDF: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4168 ).
    Look for a text or ePub version of the PDF, or Tip #5 here suggests you might be able to convert it yourself:

    otherwise how can you read a full pdf page in the iphone screen?
    some people are more willing to strain their eyes than others. I've managed it.

  • PDF Desktop Icons - Content Icon Vs. Standard PDF Icon

    Hi...
    I tried getting an answer to this in the READER forum, but to no avail, so someone suggested I try here...
    On my desktop, for any PDF file, currently all icons are the standard Adobe/PDF style.  From time to time, and I don't know what causes this, but these icons change and show as the first page of content in a little image.  This is how I would like them to be all the time, but they always revert back to the standard Adobe / PDF icons.  I don't know what changes these or how I can go about making this change permanent.
    Anybody have insight to this?  All replies would be greatly appreciated!  It's not anything major, but it's bugging the hell out of me.
    Thanks!
    Andy

    a)  Yes, I know the desktop resides in the Docs and Settings folder.
    b)  I haven't a clue as to what this question means, other than I know what a JPEG image is.
    c)  There are no differences in my various PDF files - most are downloads, others are saved copies, still others are converted to PDF via PrimoPDF Free - makes no difference - currently, all PDF icons on my desktop look like this:
    Funny thing, though...when I went to upload the above image, and the image upload set up a browse for the image file, I saw IN THAT VIEW the PDF icons as CONTENT icons, the way I would like all to be shown on my desktop as well - so you are onto something...
    d)  No differences.
    e)  Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium.
    Essentially, I want all my DESKTOP PDF icons to NOT look at they do now, but to look as they do (first page content image) in the second image above.
    Thanks...
    Andy
