Reader X vs. Acrobat 9 Portfolio

Reader X doesn't render the portfoio in quite the same way as Reader 9, probably 'by design'. Unfortunately, my carefully constructed welcome page is now, for the most part, hidden. So the portfolio is now a bit of a mess. Grrr....

As I recall, for an Acrobat 9 portfolio, clicking on a thumbnail previews a PDF, from where one can open the document fully in Reader or Acrobat using a button in its header. So, unless I'm being a liitle dim (which is entirely possible), I'd suggest 'triple-mode' isn't new, but is - in the grand scheme of things - something of an improvement.
As for that welcome screen, you're right: It does display in Reader X. However, for my portfolios, it's overlaid by the preview pane, or crunched to the left, which isn't so great since it kinda looks more bug that Adobe doing its best.
That aside, your confirmation that welcome screens & headers have been, in effect, deprecriated is useful. The fix for my portfolios is now obvious.
As for X, well I suppose IT departments will distribute it eventually. An upgrade to Acrobat Pro X depends entirely on other factors, such as whether its integration with SharePoint and the standardization offerred by Actions can deliver an adequate ROI.

Subject: Reader X vs. Acrobat 9 Portfolio
You are correct that the Acrobat X Family does not display Acrobat 9 PDF portfolios in the same way - it will respect the navigator embedded in the file but will use the new triple-mode method of displaying content, where clicking on a file thumbnail opens the document in Read Mode and access to the full content requires the file to be opened separately via the button on the right of the toolbar.
If a PDF portfolio created in Acrobat 9 has a welcome screen and/or a header, these WILL display in Acrobat X and Reader X, at least until you dismiss the welcome screen with the "Don't show again" checkbox.
The creation of PDF portfolios with welcome screens and dynamic content in headers (SWF files, links, etc) has been removed in Acrobat X.

  • How to embed index in Acrobat X portfolio

    I have a large number of documents combined into packages in Acrobat 8.1.  I embedded indices into each package and searching was very fast.  When we converted to Acrobat X, they became very sluggish and hard to search -- l ots of messages saying "Acrobat not responding" trying to load the packages and search.  I'm trying to get used to using Acrobat X portfolios, but I don't even see the Tools menu to create an embedded index after I create a portfolio.  How is this done now?

    It's possible but only with a workaround - if you're looking at a Portfolio the "Advanced Search" feature isn't available on any of the toolbars, menus or keyboard shortcuts.
    So, you need to  open Acrobat, then open the Advanced Search Window, then open your Portfolio. The window will remain open and will change to the rarely-seen version for Portfolios:

    Distributing Acrobat PDF Portfolio file on DVD. Flash Player is required for first use. Some of our customers do not have internet access. Is there a way I can include the correct Flash Player with the DVD? Using Acrobat XI, version 11.0.3. Windows.

    You need to apply for a distribution license.

  • Change folder icons in Acrobat X Portfolios?

    Will I be able to change foder icons an an Acrobat X portfolio? Other file icons too?

    Yes and no. Adobe has an SDK for creating custom portfolios (which would include creating folder icons). Information can be found here: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/portfoliosdk/    However, this requires additional tools to accomplish (ie Flash Builder).
    If the changes you want to make are fairly minimal (e.g. changing the color, size, etc) you could always try entering a feature request.

  • How do I upload Adobe Reader 9, Adobe Acrobat XI Pro, and other tools with the Pro onto my new computer?

         Since I am already a customer of Adobe, I need to know how to upload Adobe Reader 9, Adobe Acrobat XI Pro, and the other tools that go with both programs onto my new Windows 7 HP computer without having to fill out a new customer form or without having to pay for another Adobe membership as a new member?  I need to know what to do step-by-step so that I can upload my Adobe reader 9, Adobe Acrobat XI Pro, and the other tools for the Reader and the Acrobat XI Pro.

    I have been trying to start my subscription again for my Acrobat XI Pro and for the annual subscription of the PDF Export for Word and Excel.  The PDF Export expired according to my subscription list, but, I think that I had cancelled my Acrobat XI Pro of $ 29.99 monthly, so, I am wanting to presubscribe for it again, but, when I try to put my Code in for my Debit Card, it will not register with your company.
    So, I do not know what to do to get it back again with my monthly and annually subscription payments for PDF Export and for Acrobat XI Pro.  I have already downloaded the Adobe Reader XI onto my computer so I am set for that product.  I just do not know what to do about the PDF Export and the Acrobat XI Pro to be able to get them started once again.

    After an upgrade of acrobat reader 9 to acrobat reader 11 the automatic printing of a pdf. The pdf is opened, but the print does not happen. With acrobat reader 9 it works. But with acrobat reader 11 the printing does not happen.

  • Problem trying to make a LC Designer ES4 form "Reader Extended" in Acrobat XI Pro

    I have a form that I created in LC Designer ES4 that I was able to successfully "Reader Extend" using Acrobat XI Pro.  I added a script to the form to allow for the deselecting of radio buttons (which I found on this forum), and now I cannot Reader Extend the form.
    Here are the specifics of my environment:
    Acrobat XI Pro - Ver. 11.0.10
    Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES4 - Ver.  11.0.20130826.2.901444
    Windows 7 Professional, SP1
    Here's the error I am getting in the Acrobat debugger:
    Exception in line 1 of function top_level, script Document-Level:!ADBE::0100_VersChkStrings
    InvalidGetError: Get not possible, invalid or unknown.  Doc.layout:1:Document-Level:!ADBE::0100_VersChkStrings
    This error message appears at the very bottom of the debugger window:
    Unable to find source for Document-Level:!ADBE::0100_VersChkStrings
    Acrobat XI Pro does not allow me to save the new file, and gives this error:
    This document could not be Reader enabled.
    I used the chat support for Acrobat XI Pro, and was told that this is a LC Designer issue.  Since there's no phone support for LC (at least not free), I came to this forum for help.
    Here's the script object (JavaScript) that I inserted into the main subform:
    form1.Main.#variables[0].RBClear_Script_Object - (JavaScript, client)
    var rbs = new Object();
    function handleRBClick(o)
        if (rbs[o.name]==null)
            rbs[o.name]=o.rawValue;
        else{
            if (rbs[o.name] == o.rawValue)
                o.selectedMember().rawValue = 0;
                o.execEvent('change');
            rbs[o.name] = o.rawValue;
    I then call the above function from within a radio button's group list object (not individual items).
    form1.Main.Subform_Stock_Detail.Table2.Row3.Subform_Responsibility.RadioButtonList::click - (JavaScript, client)
    RBClear_Script_Object.handleRBClick(this);
    This all works fine when I preview the form from within LC Designer ES4.  I then open the dynamic PDF form in Acrobat XI Pro, click File, Save as Other..., Reader Extended PDF, then Enable More Tools.
    Acrobat shows the errors at the top of this post within the Acrobat debugger window.  When I close debugger, Acrobat does not allow me to save the new file, and gives this error:
        This document could not be Reader enabled.
    I've been searching for days and cannot find any resolution to this issue.  It appears to me that this is a security related issue, and Acrobat does not like the running of a function within the form.  Just a guess.  I can't think of anything else.
    Anyone come across this issue, and how were you able to fix it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dean

    Although I did not find a cause for the errors, I did find a workaround in my case.
    This only happens when running the Javascript Debugger in Acrobat XI Pro.  If you turn it off, you can Reader Extend the document.  If you turn it on, you have to cycle through all of the debugger errors/warnings using the arrow button in the top left corner of the debugger window, then close that window.  Still not sure what the errors are for, but at least I got the form to work.

  • Form designing for compatibility between Acrobat Reader 7 and Acrobat Professional

    I have designed a Form using LiveCycle Designer 7.0. It contains a few subforms and lot of javascripting. One of the javascript logic I am using is to display a subform when a user clicks a radio button and hide it when the user clicks another radio button. The subform contains Text field, Numeric field, Rectangle, Line, Button. This worked well with Acrobat Reader 7.
    After I installed Acrobat Professional 7, my form breaks. I did a quick test to see where it breaks and came out with the following conclusion.
    1. If the subForm contains an Image, Line, Rectangle or Circle control, the subForm rendering throws error (Adobe Acrobat 7.0 has encountered a problem and needs to close) when I click on the radio button to display the subform.
    2. If the subForm contains Text control, it is displayed even if subform is invisible.
    3. If the subForm contains Checkbox, Radio, Dropdown list, List Box, Button, Submit By Email, Submit, Print Form, Reset Form; these controls are never displayed even if subform is visible.
    Has anyone encountered a similar issue?

    Hi Dave,
    Thanks for the response.
    I need some clarification. When you say 7.0.5 version, are you expecting 7.0.5 version of Reader or Professional?
    Here's the steps I followed:
    I originally had Adobe Designer version 7, 0, 041126, 0 and Acrobat Reader 7.0.5 and everything worked great.
    Now I have uninstalled Designer and Reader and installed
    Acrobat Professional Tryout. This installs Acrobat Professional version 7.0.0 and Adobe Designer version 7, 0, 041126, 0 (which is the same as above). Now the same forms which were working earlier are not working as expected.
    Please note that I have NOT installed Acrobat Reader 7.0.5. How do I find out what version of Reader does Designer user for PDF preview?
    If I separately download Acrobat Reader 7.0.5, how do I tell Designer to use that version for PDF preview?
    Thanks,
    Satish

  • Conflict with Adobe Reader 9 and Acrobat 6

    I'm having an issue with a conflict between Reader 9 and Acrobat 6.  PDF files open properly in Reader 9, but when I open URL's with PDF links it defaults to Acrobat 6.  Reader 9 is the default program on my machine to open PDF's and I have tried to edit preferences, but it still does not work.
    I have uninstalled Acrobat 6, but I really like the idea of "printing" to a PDF.  If I decide to reinstall Acrobat 6 should I uninstall Reader 9 first and then reinstall it again later?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    You can do what you have stated as well i.e. Uninstall Reader 9 and reinstall Acrobat 6 and then Reader 9. But do make sure that while installing Reader 9, select Reader 9 as the default PDF viewing application when you are prompted.
    Or, once you have installed BOTH Acrobat 6 and Reader 9 on your system, please change the following registry key to point to AcroRd32.exe (usually present at: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe").
    HKCR\Software\Adobe\Acrobat\Exe
    Hope this resolves your problem

    Hi there,
    Distiller 9 is a part of Acrobat 9.  Acrobat 9 and Reader X can co-exist on the same machine. Unless you're having a problem, there's nothing wrong with having them both installed together.

  • Opening pdf within app using Reader X with Acrobat 5.0 installed

    I have Acrobat 5.0 (full version) installed and also Reader X.  Acrobat 5 was installed 1st and has been my default.  But, I loaded Reader X because Acrobat 5 can't open many newer PDF's.  I have gone into Explorer and set Reader X as the "open with" application and double-clicking a PDF in Explorer results in Reader X opening the file.  The problem is within various applications which have menu links to PDF's.  Many of these still attempt to open the PDF with Acrobat 5.  I believe this may be more a Windows XP problem, but thought maybe someone might know what registry item I should look for to correct this problem since it is related to Acrobat.

    Adobe doesn't recommend the use of Reader X with anything but Acrobat X. Earlier versions of Acrobat and Reader (any version) will cause problems. Remove Acrobat, re-install Reader X and if needed upgrade to Acrobat X or Remove Reader X and re-install ACrobat 5.

    Has anyone installed Reader 9 on a machine that also has Acrobat X Pro?  A website we use for UCC filings is not compatible with Acrobat X Pro.  We need to determine the best way to work with this website until they are compatible with Acrobat X and though intalling both Reader 9 and Acrobat X Pro on the same machine would be an option.  We are on Windows 7 64-bit with Office 2010 32-bit.

    It is recommended you use Reader and Acrobat at the same version.
    Though I have not tested the performance of Reader 9 and Acrobat 10 simultaneously but it should be fine.
